      Hey Ladies is the greatest music video of all time. Filmed at the G-Spot; the mansion that Capitol Records rented for the Beastie Boys after they left Def Jam and moved to L.A. Pass The Mic was filmed at G-Son, the studio they built after they moved out of the G-Spot. Building G-Son is how they met Mario C. and Keyboard Money Mark. Those two had day jobs as carpenters.

    Btw, the album Paul’s Boutique was made before people understood sampling music. So it was before you had to pay for samples. Some of the songs goes 5 layers deep of samples at the same time lol.
    It’s said that because the sampled so much famous music like the Beatles on Paul’s Boutique that if they made that album today it would be one of the most expensive records ever. But at the time it had never really been done :)

    • @blastbeatindustries3191
      @blastbeatindustries3191 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      After the fact, there was a big lawsuit about Paul's Boutique that changed music licensing forever. That's what happens when you have unlicensed samples of The Beatles and Bob Dylan.

    • @davidnicholson6680
      @davidnicholson6680 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@mmmoendo Yup. Def Jam (eventually) paid for and cleared most of the samples. Lots of people have tried to sue the Beastie Boys over this album but none of those suits had merit given the laws in place at the time of recording "Paul's Boutique". I think only Trouble Funk's lawsuit went anywhere but the Beasties eventually won that suit as well. De La Soul ran into similar issues around the same time but also won their lawsuit. Signed, an old guy.

    I am grateful that so many young bucks are discovering this music. I wish nothing more, than for every fan of Hip Hop to understand the history. The Beasties were definitely a part of that ! Three crazy, stoner Jewish kids from Brooklyn. They always got respect and you’d be struggling to find one artist who helped found this genre say anything bad about the Beasties. They are legends and represent what was so incredible about Hip Hop. It wasn’t about color, race, gender, and religion. It was about that ether. Rhyme skills and dope beats are RHYME SKILLS and DOPE BEATS! Hip Hop was founded just as much by white kids, as black and Latino. There were dope BBoys, Taggers, DJs, and yes Emcees! You better learn. Much Love👊🏼👊🏼

      Drum Samples:
      "Funky Snakefoot'' - Alphonse Mouzon (1973). Is the drum sample used for the intro. So it's the intro to both songs.
      "Dancing Room Only" - Harvey Scales (1977). Drums appear at 3 seconds right at the beginning of the first verse.
      “Super Mellow" - Paul Humphrey (1975). Drums appear at 25 seconds and can be heard throughout the song.
      “Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed” Thin Lizzy (1976) Drum fill sample at the end of the first verse at 37 seconds.
      Instrumental Samples:
      "Tell Me Something Good" - Ronnie Laws (1975). funky guitar riff sample that can be heard throughout the starts at 12 seconds
      “Yo Yo" - Rose Royce from the Car Wash soundtrack (1976) Bass sample appears at 1:04 and can be heard throughout the song
      "Born To Love You" - Rose Royce from the Car Wash soundtrack (1976). Multiple Element at 2:26 and through song
      “6 O’Clock DJ" - Rose Royce, from the Car Wash soundtrack (1976)
      The low growling synth that can be heard after each verse
      "Could You Be Loved" - Bob Marley (1980). ‘Scratch’ heard under "the most packinest", "your belief, chief" and at the end of the song
      "Good Times, Bad Times'' - Led Zeppelin (1969). Right after the vocal sample "Shake Your Rump-a" there is a drum break with synth. The first two run throughs, "Good Times, Bad Times'' appears right before the rap starts again, in the concluding drum fill
      Vocal Samples:
      “That's the Joint" - Funky 4+1 (1980).The vocal sample “It’s the Joint!” at the end of the first verse
      "That's the Unity (Pt. 2 - Because It's Coming)” Afrika Bambaataa and James Brown (1984) The vocal sample “Shake your Rump-a” after the end of the second verse
      “Rock the House” The B-Boys (1983) The vocal sample “Just like this” heard near the end of the DJ scratch break
      "8th Wonder" - The Sugarhill Gang (1980). The vocal sample “Who-ha, got them all in check” in the third verse
      "Jazzy Sensation" - Afrika Bambaataa & the Jazzy 5 (1981). Noise or vocal sample at 3:22 (I think)
      "Get Off" - Foxy (1978). Interpolation (Replayed Sample) of Vocal /Lyrics at 21 seconds However The Disco Call was pretty common and could come from many other songs.
      A Bong Hit - MCA said the bong hit comes from “our big blue bong”
      Gunshot heard right after the Bong Rip. Note the bong hit and gun shot do not appear in the video version.
      "The sound similar to a straw being pulled through a soft drink lid is an African percussion instrument known as a "cuica" (kwee-kuh). The cuica's sound is produced by pulling and pushing a wet cloth on a bamboo stick."
      “Daddy Rich“ - Rose Royce, from the Car Wash soundtrack (1976)
      “Holy Ghost“ - the Bar-Kays (1979)
      “No Matter What Sign You Are“ - Diana Ross and The Supremes {1969)

    • @anthonyv6962
      @anthonyv6962 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the worst song they ever recorded. And they agree.
      Forty-five minutes into the new Beastie Boys documentary, Adam Horovitz-better known as Ad-Rock-sheepishly recites some lyrics from “Girls,” an unabashedly misogynistic anthem from his group’s first album, Licensed to Ill: “Girls to do the dishes / Girls to clean up my room / Girls to do my laundry.”
      The crowd in front of him laughs, but Horovitz, now in his early 50s, looks more like a disapproving dad. He lets out a long, pained sigh and rolls his eyes, like an adult confronting some stupid thing they wrote in their high school yearbook. The song “was supposed to be this stupid and ironic joke,” Horovitz explains, “but understandably it wasn’t that funny.”

When their second album Paul's Boutique had poor initial sales, their label lost interest in promoting it, so the Beastie Boys tried making their own low-budget videos.
    No one at the record label wanted anything to do with them when their third album was being created (since it was expected to flop), so the Beastie Boys just did everything themselves with no creative interference. When So Whatcha Want became a hit, they were able to continue working that way. Just going off on their own, and turning in the completed recording, album art, and music videos to the label when they were done. This was a pretty unheard of way for a major-label act to operate, which is one reason why the Beastie Boys stuff from the 90's all feels so unique.

    My man! This reminds me of the first time hearing this song when it came out. This was released almost 3 years after License to Ill and a lot of people, myself included, were worried that they would never be able to put out anything that could match License to Ill. This wasn't the first song on the record but it kind of was; they had like a really short intro kind of thing first and then this song hit and it was incredible. I remember just laughing hysterically when that bass drops in that first chorus and being so happy.
    It was also cool because they gained so much success so quickly that that ruins a lot of people. they don't know how to deal with that kind of money and drugs and women. They were really rowdy there first a few years of touring then they straightened up pretty quickly and started taking their career really seriously.

    The record this is from ("Paul's Boutique") is almost 100% samples. Except for the vocals, virtually every sound on that record was sourced from somewhere else. And this was 1989!!! All analogue...no digital editing interface to work with....no ProTools... It's a sound engineering milestone. No one had heard anything like it at the time. The Beasties aren't the greatest rap group but they really earned their keep....especially with those first 4 records. Other tunes from "Paul's Boutique" to check out: "Hey Ladies", "Egg Man", and "Sound Of Science"

      Where you been? The video you're speaking of is called fight for you right revisited. It shows them what the would have been like if they continued act like clowns. As for your request.
      Mike D commented that, "The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different. There were tons of guys singing along to 'Fight for Your Right' who were oblivious to the fact it was a total goof on them." "Fight for Your Right (to Party)" could have easily defined the group, but they had the good sense to disown it as a novelty and move forward in a more mature (but still mischievous) direction. They stopped performing the song when they finished touring in 1987. Considering the group disowned this song, it's not surprising it wasn't taken seriously in the rap community. Any outrage over appropriation was tempered by the fact that Beastie Boys were signed to Def Jam Records, the label co-owned by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons that was also home to LL Cool J and a number of up-and-coming rap acts.

    Pretty sure the tradition of booty shaking songs goes back at least all the way to funk and disco in the '70s (probably even before that, only less frequently and famously), and rap just kept it going.
    The line "shake your rump-ah" in this song was sampled from "Unity" by Afrika Bambaataa & James Brown.
    "It's the joint!" (which is probably not referring to weed, by the way, but rather the song) was sampled from "That's the Joint" by Funky 4+1.
    This song, and this album as a whole, is absolutely littered with creatively combined samples. It could not have been made today because of how litigious record companies have gotten about that sort of thing, but it's a beautiful collage of borrowed sounds arranged into a unique experience.
