Adrock from the Beastie Boys bought a tape from a super young rapper no one had heard of named LL Cool J and brought it to his friend (and co-founder of Def Jam Records), Rick Rubin, back when Def Jam was ran out of Rick Rubin's dorm room. Def Jam signed LL (at age 15) and the rest is history.

From what I've read over the years, the band was goofing around on the drum machine and wrote the original beat, then it was MCA's idea to try it backwards. So he manually flipped the tape so it would run thru the player backwards and the rest is history. The drum machine couldn't do that on it's own, it was old school analog tape flipping to get the effect.
