I really like Alucards design, especially how it was adapted in the show
His Captain N design, meanwhile...
@@coalminer4301 Woah, chill out dad dude!
...moving on from captain n
i like how at first, he was dressed like a simplified version of his sotn appearance, getting closer to the original around season 4
@@thebaseandtriflingcreature174and by Nocturne he's basically Griffith.
@@jd7507in nocturne he looks the most like he does in sotn what are you talking about?
Seeing the pictures of Castlevania 3 Alucard makes me wish they made a joke with that in the Netflix Series. Like Trevor stumbling over a family portrait and little Alucard just looks like that.
"... my father tried cutting my hair. It didn't work."
Sypha : 'But what about the hair color?'
Alucard : 'An accident with Mother' s experiments... Turns out platine blond hair dyes easier than fabric.'
@@rosevalety3408"Couldn't they have waited for your hair to clear up in order to get a better portrait?"
"I didn't mind. And neither did they. A portrait that decorates a fireplace is cozy and plain. A portrait that makes you laugh and reminds you of a good memory? That's priceless."
@@TheNekoGentleman I came here to hear TBSky's review of Alucard, not to cry 😭
Y'all made some good lines in this comment thread😁👍✨

And gothic literature lovers bowed down to that design. Seriously, he looks amazing!!🥵🥵
And even us non-goths *choked*

I'm just swooning... I ain't goth yet.
So real. I’m not an easily flustered bat but every time I look at this man I blush 😭 he’s so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes, like I’m staring at the sun
@@vincentgeiszler3749 And everyone enjoys the widdle smile he did. It's so cute.😭
1. Also note that while both Dracula and Alucard dress regally, the former dresses comftorably like a proper lord, while the latter dresses almost like a hunter. Another nice contrast.
2. I love how both Alucard and his father are , for all terms and purposes, ghostly pale, but whereas Dracula look like an actual undead, Alucard has an almost angelic quality to him. Its really cool how just a few colour changes can make two characters with an eerily similar aesthetic give off two completely different impressions.
Alucard is what i aspire to be in life. aesthetic on point, gender immaculate, spends most of the time sleeping except for when its REALLY IMPORTANT and sometimes not even then.
Never has bed hair even sleeping for litteral years. And has a sword he can manipulate with his mind. Me too friend... Me too
Gone to bed after Castlevania 3, woke up BEAUTIFUL.
And in the show he's bi, so he has DOUBLE the chance of getting some no matter where he goes 😏
Same I need to BECOME HIM
100%
best ideal to aspire
i'm with you on this road
His weapon of choice is also important! While Dracula prefers Minions, Monsters, Magic or even his bare hands in monster form, Alucard uses a Rapier. A weapon for quick slashes, jabs and close combat in tight area. Meant to used with grace and purpose. Not mindless force or flashiness.
Alucard sword is actually an estoc, not a rapier.
An Estoc is a one and half or most of the time a two handed sword which main point of focus is its very sharp tip which is perfect to stab through chainmail or pierce an heart, which is really important when you want to kill a vampire
An estoc can even be edgeless since most of the time only the tip is used.
Also it was used on aristocratic tournament and in noble hunting contest to kill boar.
Its basically the ancestor of the rapiere, cimenting Alucard as an old dude
@@anonyme4881 I see. His sword being an Estoc does make sense! The guard of a Rapier would be different. I don't much about estocs, my only experience of them was in Dark Souls.
It's also a *manmade* weapon, leaning on his human half.
@@Sam-de6qx you can apply the dark souls knowledge also though! From what I remember, the Estoc only has lunge attacks, all stabby no slashy
@@db5094 No, the estoc had slashing attacks. Heavy attacks were slashing, very similar to how Alucard cuts with his own sword as well. If I am not mistaken, it was DS1 where Estoc’s only slashing attacks were one-handed, but switching to two made it a pure thrust weapon. Not fully sure about this one. The most recent estoc slashing moveset I have seen was in Elden Ring, which had both one-handed and two-handed heavy attacks with slash animations.
Edit: I am right about the DS1 animations for Estoc being one-handed heavy attack is its only slashing move. I do not know when the heavy 2-handed became a slash. It was either DS3 or Elden Ring. Either way, I prefer the slashing heavy attacks for an accurate Alucard cosplay.
Also while Dracula's pale skin and white hair make him look extra ghostly and vampiric Alucard gets the blonde hair from his mother, which makes him look more angelic in comparison.
@@Aivottaja Who doesn't?
@@Aivottaja ??????
Those 300 years of beauty sleep between games did him well
"That was some beauty sleep"
You take in how he looks, and then he actually speaks in game and the voice they gave him is deep and commanding. It works very well for him.
Absolutely, the worst part of the rereleases was the change to make his voice more "generic bishounen." That deep, resonant Robert Belgrade voice had just the right amount of uncanniness.
and he's very short, too. speech wise, not height
@@chillfactory9000 lmao, imagine that he grows long hair, wears long cape, and wields long sword, just to compensate for his height
@@seratarsybagusibrahim5018I mean he can equip platform boots in SOTN…
He looks like he could fit into bloodborne PERFECTLY, like the kind of character you could see covered in blood from head to toe and somehow find them even more gorgeous
he'd probs be part of hunters of the vileblood like alfred or a byrgenwerth scholar hunter
@@blkasixn9839 Alucard would also be the only Hunter you just... randomly find in the Hunter's Dream, because of course the guy who sleeps for centuries at a time can be found there.
Also, I think it can't be understated how much Alucard resembles his mother, the only piece of humanity Dracula had.
when he disguises himself under the alias Genya. he pretty much looks like a younger version of his dad when his hair is black.
Alucard is the ONLY Japanese designed character who can justify having that many belt buckles
So, this is also worth noting. Alucard, SPECIFICALLY bishounen Symphony of the Night Alucard, is a homage to Vampire Hunter D.
Both extremely pretty, eternally young men. Long-haired, wearing flowing coats or cloaks. Both hunters of the undead (it's in the name), favoring longswords as their primary weapon. Both dhampir, half-vampire, sons of Dracula.
And if this seems like I'm stretching? D has in his possession a blue amulet. It seems like magic, but is actually a piece of incredibly advanced tech used for unlocking sealed doors.
The first item you usually get in Symphony of the Night is a blue amulet, which unlocks a door.
The man that took a hardcore platforming series and turned it into an action RPG to the delight of many & pioneered an entire genre.
@@jason4443While you're right, pioneers doesn't always mean "The first to", it means they made a revolution within the industry/field they're working on, while it's true Metroid was the first, Castlevania pushed it's limits, think of it as sorta what hollow knight did, in a sea of games that tried to replicate Metroid, Castlevania came and broke the cycle, whehe
It does feel like Alucard either became or at the very least took the role of the protagonist of the series after SOTN. Yeah, you might find a guy with a whip somewhere, but the son of Dracula usually isn’t too far behind. They really knew how to make him shine and become just as iconic as his father.
In my mind, there are basically two Castlevanias. The Belmonts are the face of the hard-core action platforming Castlevania. While Alucard is the face of the metroid style exploration Castlevania.
@@Chowder_T I'd agree with that description- Alucard features in Aria/Dawn of Sorrow as well, the only open-exploration ones he wasnt in were Order of Ecclesia, and maybe Circle of the Moon, i've never properly played that one, and even in the Sorrow duology you can argue that Soma is strikingly similar to Alucard but contrasts him in a way that gives him an aura of foreboding and uncertainty, almost a dark reflection of Alucard's own fate and connection to Dracula. Sure he's slathered in white and blue, but he features Dracula's dead-looking shade of white for his hair, and he always seems to have this anger to his face, and the fur lining of his collar in Aria is large and intimidating and a display of power- not something unlike a king would himself wear.
In that way even when Alucard wasn't featured directly as the protagonist, he almost always still defined them in some manner.
No idea what's going on in OoC though.
@@GoodGirlPeruruhe's not in harmony of dissonance either. The GBA game thats the most similar to soth except with a Belmont. it has it's own version of an "invert castle", tons of bosses, HP upgrade item, Save room is literally just soth, and collect the 5 Dracula relics to unlock final boss.
I always loved how the shoulder of the coat is falling off in his default portrait for Sotn. Gives him an aura of aloofness too, or perhaps reflects on how he’s just woken up and is still perhaps a bit out of it
Psychiatrist: "Lawful Black Griffith isn't real."
Lawful Black Griffith:
You made me hate Alucard for a second...and that's a sin...
How dare you disrespect Alucard this way
Alucard is better then Griffith!
how dare you
Griffith vs Alucard 1v1
The kojima gothic art is incredible. Her work and amano are some of my favorite things to stare at.
Ayami Kojima is honestly just one of the greatest video game artists of all time. Her designs are FLAWLESS
Fun fact: Alucard is Dracula spelled backwards.
An obscure bit of trivia, but I assure it is true.
Aint no way 😮😮😮
No way, I can't believe it! "Alucard" is "Dracula" spelled backwards?
It’s interesting how with Dracula you said the gold accents represented wealth, but for alucard they represent the sun. Color theory be wild
I appreciate that the Netflix show took designs from Symphony of Night instead of the earlier games.
To be fair it would have been pretty weird if they did.
There was incredibly little to work with, the fact that they could fasten a show together is an absolute miracle. Most of the games consist of platforming, whipping skeletons and maybe 12 lines of dialogue tops. SotN had the best art for sure so it was a no brainer to go with that.
The writers did tons more research on the historical era the games existed in and manufactured a mythical version of these times. Tons of hard work.
@@Anarch_Busheythere are hours of lore of the games to pull from. Alucard's and Drac's arcs and characters are pulled straight from the games. And it's not like they did that great of historical research either
"...like his father's vampiric son, and like his vampiric father's worst enemy." *cries in Castlevania Netflix trauma*
I’m killing my boy
A neat detail is that his cloak and jacket are open, like hes showing his humanity of his outfit. Showing that his outfit has many aspects that would require craftsmanship of some person where Draculas is constantly being covered by his huge cloak shielding his inner self (ie monster and his hurt being)
Need to find me a lover who describes me this way.
That Castlevania 3 Alucard looks like Count Choccula`s love child
It's dorkish and I love it tbh
Kojima Ayami deserves every praise and so much more for making this and Dracula's design for Symphony of the Night, peak vampire designs, some of the best ever made.
Unpopular opinion but I prefer her redesign of Simon Belmont much more over the original. Her style and designs are so unique and beautiful, there's a reason the animated series bases the character designs off of her's.
I made the mistake a good while back to a friend of mine that I find Alucard attractive, and now recently he just hit me with, “Hey! I’m gonna be playing your husbando for a Curse of Strahd campaign that I’m joining!”
Alucard was my bi-awakening.
Man I would absolutely love to listen to TBSkyen analyze the killers of Dead by Daylight!
never would've crossed my mind on its own but that'd actually be cool honestly
Ayami Kojima is a saint
Her and Michiru Yamane. Those two women were vital in turning Castlevania into something incredibly unique. It was always interesting to me to see the difference between the people who grew up playing the NES games in the 80's and those who are more of a fan of the post-SOTN ones.
I do wish her Belmont designs were more masculine, I like her takes on Ricther and Julius, but her Simon isn't my favorite.
Let's not forget the Captain N design from 1991 which was the first time he was shown with blond hair, a coloration that would follow him for the rest of the franchise
As well as his iconic sunglasses and bat shaped skateboard
Alucard became so famous, his design even inspired the looks of one other Belmont, Juste. HoD tried to recreate the magic of SotN, but it was AoS who managed to do so.
Hopefully he rates Soma next as he is also part of the Dracula family by technicality
He so fine
Couldn't have said it better myself
What was also not mentioned is Alucard favors his mother Lisa tying him to humanity through her. Something while Vlad admired and adored in Lisa, he neglected those connections in his son Adrian. The platinum blonde hair, the bone structure of his mother, he resembles his mother to further cement his connection to humans rather than his connection to his vampire father and the hellish denizens of his castle.
Alucard's clothes are VERY 1770s aristocracy coded and he does look fabulous with that design.
Meanwhile Simon: Is it goth redhead today? blonde chad? or kid with armor?
Or bikerbro light yagami
Smash Bros has decided the true canon, blonde barbarian giga chad.
He also holds traits of his mother, which makes him seem kinder and softer.
Who else thinks Skyen should do an analysis of Soulcalibur characters? I feel like they’re worth a look.
Alucard's design single handedly made me play symphony of the night. Bro had me swooning
He knows Which knife goes with the entré, and which goes in your throat
Alucard's SOTN design was lighting in a bottle. It cannot be replicated but admired for its unique beauty and prestige!❤
I’d love to see more symphony of the night character design that game is so good and still even somehow holds up today
I'm especially fond of how he looks in Netflix's "Castlevania: Nocturne" because he's so ethereal, like a ghost of a bygone age. That's exactly what he is, relative to Riktor Belmont's perspective, so it's a nice touch!
We all wish we could be as dripped out like he is.
I love his design so much. There is good character design and then there is character design that pushes the art style to its fullest potential and that is show Alucard. He is devine.
I will literally have tears on my eyes if you choose to touch upon Soma Cruz(my beloved)
He looks like you’d be invited to a ball or fancy event he hosts but if you do something bad he will hunt you down himself
I prefer my Alucard a bit mouthy with a penchant for long walks in the woods, tbh
Ah, yes, my first "question my hetero" guy
Real
Alucard is the fan-favorite of the series and it is easy to see why!
God I love my bisexual disaster Alucard
Waiting to see him talk about Ganondorf
I like that you started talking about Castlevania a few days after I started to play symphony of the night for the second time, Alucard's redesign and sprites are worth the revisit to this title
Soma is my favorite, but Alucard is a close second design wise.
He looks angelic
he is the reason why metroidvania existed
"Biseinen" would be a better description for alucard.
One of the saddest things about my background in gaming is that I never got to play this beautiful game. He is the absolute PRINCE and I LOVE this design. So much flair and charm to him.
Loooove symphony of the night and Alucard ❤
I became a fan of yours after seeing your shorts for Fromsoftware games. I may not always see eye to eye with you with your readings, but your stuff always impresses me and makes me feel more observant when I’m enjoying something. It reminds me of how some Church sermons are 30 to 45 minute interpretations of a single verse of scripture. You’re really able to get a lot out of what seems to be a little and I got mad respect for that.
Alucard does look aristocratic, kind of like a rich boy except he radiates power but not in a scary way, more like that he has centuries of knowledge and skill at his disposal.
LMAO HE LOOKS LIKE TREVOR BELMONT IN FIRST DESIGN AHDJDHSHDHSBDHD
He reminds me of D the vampire hunter. Just unnaturally beautiful.
He is Sephiroth brother.
I love them both as a kid.
A design so well cooked it's been iconic and being used to this day. When someone utters the name Alucard, this look is the first thing that comes to mind
Smash, next question.
It's astonishing how you always seem to take the things I think about a character, and put it to words. I always struggle to describe things like *why* a character design is good.
He is one of my favorite characters because of all the reasons you mentioned but also because we have the same name xd
I used to think alucard and juste were related because when would a belmont look so bishounen
Lisa might be from a distant family of paladins related to the belmonts. That's why Alucard can access some of the holy weapons' powers.
It’s not canon anymore, but in legends, it’s implied Alucard impregnated Sonya Belmont
Imagine putting on 40lbs of clothing every day
Dripp going crazy
Whenever I hear alucard I just keep thinking of the guy who goes on night time walks and who actively harassed the Vatican with letters
A creature of culture, I see
I want to hear him talk about Soma, but I want to hear about Genya Arikado too since he’s talking about Alucard.
I just love the music
the glazing is unreal
Most iconic? That title goes to Simon Belmont.
Amen. Simon isn’t the star of 8 games for nothing!
@@AdrianFahrenheitTepes Also, the first Castlevania character added to Smash Bros.
He is a male version of his mother.
Literally every time you talk about a franchise, even if I’ve never heard of it, I suddenly want to check it out. Brb I’m gonna go watch the Castlevania series and look up playthroughs of the games
Keep in mind that the canons from the show and games are separate
Go white boy go!
Das rite
If Griffith was a good lad
These designs analysis are amazing and make my day everytime, man. Super interesting. Keep it up!
I call this the power of beauty sleep, this guy is sleep for 321 years! And this is what he gets
hes everything to me
He's bootiful. Just godly levels of bishonen
Beautiful concept art, beautifully explained
looking at all the characters desings on castlevania is a treat to the eyes
then there is castlevania judgment...
Ah, but what about his iconic depiction in gaming classic Kid Dracula? Surely his shaggy mop of hair and suspenders were a major influence on the development of the character going forward.
Please keep making more character design shorts for Castlevania. I’d love to hear your thoughts on some of the characters that were used in the shows, the characters in Symphony of the Night, or maybe go into the designs of other protagonists throughout the series (like Soma Cruz and how his white and blue color scheme contrast with Dracula’s black and red).
So this is Lord Sanguinius going through a “phase”
Can we maybe get my goat soma cruz to keep the Dracula trend going
"Lisa.. I'm killing our boy.." :(
Alucard my beloved I need to BE HIM
I recently beat Symphony of the Night for the first time (also got the platinum) and it was incredible- one of my favorite games ever. Alucard is one of my favorite video game characters of all time- also has the best style!
i just know he and Sephiroth could be the biggest bff "we are going to beat you to death" duo
Pre-Nibelheim Sephiroth, sure. Post-Nibelheim Sephiroth? Probably just a smidge too similar to his father for Alucard to get along with. By which I mean they would come to blows immediately.
Excellent description
I really like that the first art shown at this shorts, has Alucards sword facing the wrong way
The yellow can also represent the light and humanity of his mother who is both game and show was a kind hearted person and alucard fights to protect humanity in the name of his mother and with the yellow being on the highlights in contrast to Dracula’s red it show the that while he has the body of a vampire from his dad he has the heart of a human from his mom
Captain N Alucard is the best version.
