  • Once a niche lure category, glide baits have become productive mainstream swimbaits for bass anglers looking for bites and those chasing giants alike. Wired2fish contributor, Nick Smith of the Informative Fisherman (wired2.fish/InformativeFisher..., dives deep into the topic of why, how, and when to use glide baits. Through the process, he instills the confidence to use glide baits to catch numbers of bass, big bass, and perhaps most importantly, learn where the big ones live.

    • GLIDE BAIT - Savage Gear Shine Glide: wired2.fish/SavageGearShineGlide
    • HOOK UPGRADE - Savage Gear Savage Grip Trebles: wired2.fish/SavageGripTrebles

    While effective at catching fish, glide baits also excel at revealing where big fish live; they exhibit a wide side-to-side "S" motion on the retrieve that bass can't resist inspecting. Like musky fishing, following bass reveal where they live and allow you to build high-percentage milk runs. You can then try coaxing bites through retrieve changes and bait experimentation, or try catching them using different tactics altogether.
    Smith shares some important boat positioning and casting angle principles. Long, parallel casts are ideal for keeping the bait in the strike zone, which then affords you to experiment with different retrieves ranging from slow and steady, steady with kick-outs to the side, or full-on freestyle. Smith explains how to do each to appeal to the broadest mood range of fish possible.
    Lastly, Smith shares a wealth of information related to gear selection ranging from the right bait, rod setup, the benefit of upgrading to braided treble hooks, and his favorite glide bait for both performance and affordability.

    Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.

    Lovely bait bud, outstanding work again. I was happy when you said you were using heavy braid for testing the lure. It amazes me how many big baits are lost due to line snapping on the cast. When beach casting in the sea we use a formula of 10lb per 1 oz weight for determination of shock leader strength. When using heavy lures on powerful swimbait rods I apply the same logic, but instead of shock leader I use straight up braid to the lure or bite leader, for tooth fish like pike, so for a 6oz lure it is 60lb braid straight through. Also if I get snagged I nearly alway get my lure back

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  ปีที่แล้ว

      They are WICKED sticky, aren't they? We've had some excellent results on them. We'd recommend the 1/0 for the 7 inch glide. The hooks are light enough that they won't impede the bait action at this size.

  • @jasondetreich8331
    @jasondetreich8331 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The savage gear glides are nice in the water. The problem is getting any distance on the cast. They helicopter cast more than any glide I’ve ever thrown. But you can’t beat the price. And you can even fish it aggressively from the bank around structure. Because if you break it off you aren’t out of $100 or more

      How many inches per turn is it.?
      I use a 6.3:1 and a 7.1:1 I like the 6:1 a little better. These are kinds ruff estimates
      6:1 is around 24”-26” per turn retrieved
      7:1 is approximately 28”-30” retrieved
      8:1 is approximately 32”-34” retrieved
