- BIG Wakebaits Catch BIG Bass! Today We're going to show you how to fish them! From the basics of retrieves and lure shapes, to advanced details on bait design, we're breaking down all the details of fishing with big topwater for bass. Whether you like to throw a lipped Wake, a multi joint, a rat, or giant walking bait, these are the details you need to know!
Very few baits are capable of catching bass in both Summer and Winter, around cover or open water, which makes it even more amazing that wakebaits are largely overlooked by many anglers. It's time for that to change! Let's start with a look at the River2Sea Tactical Wake 210, but we won't stop there. Next we're looking at stand out baits from around the industry.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits and equipment Matt discussed in the video. He's also included his favorite rod and reel combos for fishing these baits effectively, along with his favorite hook upgrades. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

I was fishing my local reservoir and found a tactical wake 210 washed up on the ground. Didn’t catch a fish but I’ll take a $80 lure!
Good find they work
It’s a sign.
That’s an epic find 😮
Duo Realis Rozante caught me a ton of CL bass the year it came out. I smashed them one day all day and still leave it in my truck just in case I want to use it.
Someone was crying when they lost it lol
Having watched your guys’ videos FOREVER. It’s truely awe inspiring to be featured in one of your videos!
Wake up yall it's time to learn about wake baits!
I've been throwing the Tactical Wake for a couple of weeks now. Can't wait till I finally get one on it. Thanks for this bait guys!
Thanks Matt, have 2 of your wakes, bought the mark56 to fish them. Can't wait to get the old boat back and go fish the color lines. I've learned so much from you guys, thank you!
Heck yeah......shout out Toxic Baits!
BOUT DAMN TIME!
My favorite way to fish guys!!! Thanks again for getting me my PB on your Tactical wake 210. Other favorites
Lanciotti PT and PG
Bucca Rar
MS Slammer
Pats Perch
Spro 50
I haven't got my hands on the clutch wake yet, but I love their glidebait! Love the video. Keep it up!
I was just thinking...i wonder if Tim & Matt keep all their lures & equipment inside their house....I'd make a bet the houses have sunk a few inches from all the weight...mine's dropped 2 inches & i now sleep outside in a tree as i have too many lures taking up all the floor space...life of a lure addict...Big baits are my ABSOLUTE favorite...MS Slammer & Spro 50 Rat caught my 1st 2 bass...another favorite...Cl8 Baby Possum...so cool! I might break out the Tactical Wake this Saturday!
One of my favorite ways to catch them here in Mass!
Fantastic information.
Can’t wait for the wakebait bites to really start. Got a Duo Realis Dead Drift 100 for early Father’s Day I’m excited to see produce too! 🤞🤞
For my swimbaits I use the Dobynns 794-795 and 806 Champion SB rods and love them...we do very well on wake baits here...great video again!
I just picked up a 7” Ms slammer last week. Excited to throw it. Also enjoy throwing the black dog g2 shellcracker.
Love my wake baits, if you're wanting to get into throwing swimbaits, I highly recommend starting out with a wakebait.
Nothing beats wakebaiting for bass and stripers
Matt/Tim - love the wake bait I’ve caught fish nothing giant on it YET!! I know you look for holes in the market…. I need a tactical wake in the 168 size for the spots here in California
I second this for my Erie smallmouth
The spots eat it. I've gotten a handful on it. 2 today. Down size the hooks to 1/0 for better hookups.
Throw the 210 in trout stocked lakes. I got my PB in Massachusetts on one. Before I got my 8lber, I got a 1 lber.
I never thought about the spro trout being a wakebait. I'll try your retrieve from now on.
My local pond has fairly small bass. Or so I thought until I threw the Spro rat 40 literally on my last cast around 10 pm. 2 feet from the bank, BOOM, 4 lber. And that’s BIG for that pond. Love the bait.
The Tactical Wake is absolutely deadly here in Massachusetts/Rhode Island 🔥🔥🏆
Love the vid!!
Unless I'm mistaken we havnt had a dedicated crank down vid. Any in the works?? Would love to see a how to fish, recommend baits.
Keep up the Great work, Been watching for years!
Great video Matt!
Really appreciate the information. I was blown away at the size of bait a bass will eat. I was throwing a 12 inch wake bait and a nice 4 pounder ate that bait here in Tennessee.
I’d love to hear your opinions on the crank down swimbaits too.
I love wake bait fishing! Honestly I love any topwater fishing and I wish I could catch them on top all year. Luckily I live in a warm climate and I can fish topwater 9 or 10 months of the year. I have a particular pond I fish that I kill on the wake. The odd thing about it though is they are bluegill eaters and I’ve thrown several bluegill style wakes and never got a bite. I’ve done all my damage on a black OD rat with a black carbon fiber lip. I’m not sure if it’s the knock that rat has, which sounds awesome, or if it’s that seductive snaky swim it has but it flat out works. You guys make an awesome wake as well and I own one. Just haven’t caught one on it yet but I’m definitely going to be throwing it a lot this summer.
Great info…. Thanks
At some point can you please do a video showing how you work the different baits. Also can you show the knot(s) you use to tie those big baits on. i want to try this but I am a bank fisherman that fishes several 2o to 100 acre lakes. The idea of casting off a 75.00 bait is a little unnerving. Thanks for the Great content consistently delivered.🎣
Some real juice in this video thank you 🎣🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳
Matt, You might think I’m crazy but the Cotton Cordell Redfin wake in Smokey Joe is the very best wake on a Highland reservoir like Hartwell. I have three of the Spro wake baits in my Tackle Warehouse cart now that should do the job. Very similar to the Redfin but I figure much better hooks.
Thanks for the tip. I might have to try that Redfin here on Beaver. That's a bait I can afford.
Catches absolutely everything from Stripers to Spots, Largemouth, White Bass and everything in between. Also works amazingly good year round. Even Dec & Jan
I remember the old Bassmaster article talking about modifying them and waking them for monster fish. Bought and modified one but never had a big bite before I lost it.
TOXIC BAITS BABYY
Hey Matt...no love for the OG Black Dog baits? Shellcracker, Wake Jr or Lunker Punker?
Awesome video I love the swimbait seminar longer videos!…. How about a crankdown swimbait video
I've use giant wake baits more than glides or big soft baits. Been using them for so many years
Livetarget makes a small matte bluegill wake that's fantastic. I think it's 3 1/2".
My wake bait fishing is starting tomorrow with a Megabass SuWitch.
looking to get that tactical wake asap, but honorable mention for me on the smaller side has to be the shellcracker v2… you wanna talk about an absolutely filthy slow creep action, that thing gets smoked
Tackle warehouse just added some Throwback Wake Walkers. You should try it.
Matt, what do you think about the old school Black Dog baits Shellcracker wake bait? Ive slayed on those!
Have you ever dealt with jacked up baits yet? Should check out his new bluegill wake baits he has. I have one and love the show crawl action
Are you guys going to do one of these videos but for Glidebaits
How about a night video again? I fish Table Rock at night and any more tips would be great!
I have been playing with Ryugi quad hooks on my big glides recently and have been very impressed as I don’t lose many fish, just wondering if anyone else has an opinion on them
I throw7-9" wakes probably 90% of the time up here in MN. They absolutely slay! And u are right about the slammer my 9" perch slammer is so beat up and that thing just gets bit. My high end baits dont get nearly the bites as my slammers.
I’m in MN and I want to get into Wakebaits what time of year and conditions do you throw wake baits in?
@@Lambyyyy where abouts in MN? Typical stuff i fish em early and late in the day. But my fabvorite time is a day where its light sprinkles and super over cast. Throw those baits over the tops of grass ans they annihilate em. I also love fall throwing a gill style wake like a UFO or throwback baits etc. Those gills suspend right on the surface over weeds in the fall. Nighttime of course is fun too throwing a big rat. But the mosqitoes get so bad its tough.
Enjoyed it, what shirt is that you have on? I likevthat the hoodie isn't too big.
Learned so much thanks! What reel gear ratio on those wake baits??
We prefer to fish them on 7:1
Ill be throwing a MS Slammer all summer!
Have you guys tried the new evergreen combat rat wake bait??
Have you thrown the toxic wade 3 it os a wade hog but 3 piece it is a killer spotted bass getter
😂 the looks ive gotten iver the years when I've thrown the Mega-dog. 😅 Till a massive striper blows up on it and then people are shouting over, "Hey what is that youre using!" Lol
Ceasar with toxic baits makes an amazing product
Have you guys tested the Evergreen Combat Rat?
Multisegment hard baits are probably the most overlooked baits in the big bait game.
Maybe you can throw a few winged crawler baits in there 🤙🏼
Can we get the paycheck transporter frog back please.. or can you guys make one with river 2 sea!!???
There's been a lot of talk lately about keeping bass for the betterment of fisheries. I'm curious what your two opinions are on the subject. Personally I'm for selective harvest. I'm personally for keeping some schoolies, not keeping every fish I catch and always releasing the big ones
Have you put any time into the evergreen combat rat?
My BP largemouth came off the SPRO BBZ rat. 8.5 lbs
Still looking for my first bite on the tactical wake trying not to lose confidence in the bait
A big pike gave me 5 stitches in my thumb. I ain’t catching any bass currently, so I might as well learn about wake baits. 😂
Ouch!!
When would you choose the walking bait vs the wake?
All my PBs have come with big jerkbaits. Awesome video
I’ve never found a great storage system for wake baits. The size, the hook rash, the bills tend to be huge…what’s Tim’s go to?
We know Matt just has a big open box he puts em in. 😂
What cheap baits do you recommend for bank fishing 🎣
Jitterbug! The OG wake bait.
The bigger jointed one was always a killer
I have been wanting to dive in on the your guys' wake bait but when I do I want to nail the color for my lakes... im in Colorado so we have alot of trout in our lakes... should I go trout? Does it mimic an injured trout well? I didn't hear any mention of that... or should I go just something flashy in general?
If your bass are eating trout, 100% go with trout 👍🏼
What is the best wake bait for striped bass?
I need help with a problem. When fishing after a BIG storm with lots of lightning and thunder, I lose my fish completely. I can't find them and the ones I do find won't bite. What the heck can I do? I've been lost for years trying to figure that out
The darter will beat the single?
You gonna grab the evergreen combat rat
I’ve thrown some smaller wake baits, but those larger ones seem like they cause fatigue rather quickly like when you sling big rubber musky baits. Is there anything in the setup to help with this? Longer rod, stiffer rod, low profile reel, etc.?
I throw mine on an 8ft irod swimbait bailey rod
@@northernbassalliance1442 is that a heavy fast action?
@@live2fishofficial heavy mod fast 3-8 oz
@@live2fishofficial A lot of the baits aren't that heavy, a majority he talked about in the video are below 4 oz. Use a moderate fast rod and let the rod do the work.
did you guys explain what makes a wake bait a wake bait and not a glide bait or a swimbait? especially when you mention ones that don’t have lips i apologize if i missed that explanation
nvm i think i got it it’s because it floats as i listened further 😂
Ideas? I bought a zodias 7’2 ML extra fast paired with a Chronarch. The preeminent reason for which I bought it for won’t work. It’s EF but it loads too much in the blank and not enough back bone. First time I’m lost. I live way up north. Been targeting smallies this year because of the year / winter we’ve had. Amazing / insane. If anyone including Matt or Tim has or had a similar combo, please let me know what you had or are using it for. 13:26
I squarebill with mine and keep them hooked up
I haven’t tried but that’s the same technique I said would be the only one I could see working. It has the parabolic bend that my other square bill rods have. Thank you for responding. I did buy a levante shanky head paired with a vanford ( should be here Friday) hopefully that works.
Need a 168 size for Colorado, big bass here are 5-6 lb
7” MS Slammer is easy my favorite wake bait. Damn thing just gets bit.
How long of leader do you use on T.W. 210 ?
Short is fine... 4-5 feet.
I was wondering if u were ever gonna mention toxic baits that’s awesome! Toxic baits smash big fish and a lot of them.
Sorry 2 say 210 tactical review I hit a laydown snagged and busted the bill lose i got it back still without a bite for the price I'm disappointed with the durability probably only made 100 casts no fish first thing it's touched ....
Now I think you can get cheaper plastic made toxic baits. I don't agree with people working with Chinese companies but... there's abs toxic baits now.
Agree or not agree, the truth is they're MUCH more consistent than handmade baits. There will always be a blem, but when you're hand pouring, simple things like air temperature and humidity can completely alter the resin.
@@tacticalbassin thank you guys so much for the recognition! ABS Hoggs is a killer. Already an 11 to its credit!
$149.99 for a lure? Really. When will we see something for 4 digits? This is nuts. Can I use this lure with a set of live scope crt’s costing 100k, along with my new boat, car and Lear jet. Man, I love fishing.
$80 bait = affordable
Shout out to Toxic Baits 🫡🫡
