I can’t believe I’ve been subscribed to TB for over 10 years! This video brings back good memories! Matt & Tim have upped my bass game so much over the years I can’t thank em enough!
I just started fishing a swimbait for largemouth for the first time today and this s waver is the first swimbait I have decided to try. Before even watching this video I was actually just instinctively going with reeling it really slow 5x and then two twitches and repeat. Glad to see I wasn’t too far off my thinking. I’m going to try the really long pull back method. Thank you for the suggestions.
One of my favorite things about this channel is how you guys seem to always differ on gear you use, technique, theory, whether it's way off or just slightly. I havent been fishing my whole life so a few years on the water I'm still taking in a LOT of information. It helps to keep me paying attention to what I like and what works for me and that what other people say isnt law. You guys help so much to get started and give me a starting point and then I figure out the rest with what I use and how I fish. Never stop making videos! Best most consistent fishing channel out there.
Awesome video. I used the 168 on Table Rock Lake during the Oakley Big Bass event, and caught a 4.5lbs largemouth that won me the hourly weigh-in ($1000). And I've caught so many largies, smallies, and spots in that lake on it. Nice to finally see a great instructional video on the bait
RichyBobby611 That's awesome! You already understand the power of the glide bait. Keep going, there's a lot of money to be made out there before the baits are nationally accepted. :-)
I use these retrieves (I just use quick 1/2 or 1/4 reel handle turns instead of rod twitches) to fish glide baits and the the s-waver 168 has become my most successful bait ever for big fish! Thanks!
Perfect timing for this old video to pop up on my phone… I’m heading to an urban lake near my house here in So Cal to practice throwing a variety of glide baits on Tuesday… maybe even hook into a few big bass as a bonus.
Know this is an oldie. Like the kind of sparing over "tactics". You don't get good without confidence in what your doing. You both have it in different applications on this bait, just goes to show nothing better than time on the water, experimenting to some extent. Thanks guys, Tim your a BEAST! You need to join me on Lake Champlain some time so we can share some finesse tactics!

Had some epic nights with stripers with the 200. Appreciate you fellas for your contributions to bass fishing.
Matt you're awesome for helping everybody out. I wish there were more that gave this good of advice here on TH-cam. There's a pond I fish in Wisconsin that has two different species of trout in it. I've fished glide baits and Huds in gill or shad colors all around 6 inches and all I get is a few followers. Two years ago a kid caught an 8 pounder out of there which is huge for Wisconsin. The state record is basically what I'm chasing but I don't understand why I can't get a single hit. When I see followers they leave and that's just when I get them. I've only been fishing them for about two months now but I haven't been able to catch anything unless I'm using jigs. I've don't tons of research on every bait I have and what to do when you spot a follower and different techniques but still nothing. Also the place is somewhat pressured. I spent tons of money and I'm stressed about the fact that I can't seem to get any results. Thank you.
10Fishinghowtos If your fishing a glide bait and u have a follower, twitch the rod hard and make it 180 so it's facing the bass, this has helped me a few times wen I had a follower.
I swear I am getting confused now after watching too many videos over the years of what pound line to throw on what rod for swim baits!!! But your guys videos clear it all up!
Amazing video. An insightful intro to pretty much all glide baits which are all the rage. Would loved to have heard yours and Tim's favorite S-Waver colors.
This is an amazing video! Im glad you all have different techniques and disagree on some things. Same results! I struggle taking my friends out on the smaller waters that have up to 8lbs fish (northwest Idaho). I have caught bigger bass with you're advice than any others. Dworshak is part of my back yard. But moved and catching good largemouth with you're tactics! Thanks
When you guys disagree I feel like I get a lot more information from the video and it reiterates that if I find something that works it's OK if it's not " the correct way" as long as it works for me and I'm catching fish.
Just got mine in today and went out in the boat on a small lake by my house. Had one 5-6 pound largemouth throw it and got a ton of smaller 1 1/2 to 2 pounders in some big wolf packs. In love already and just ordered some more
Hi, Matt. I'm trying to learn as much as possible about glide baits, with an eye toward using them on big striped bass in salt water. So, this video on the River2Sea, which is one of the designs I intend to focus on initially, was very helpful. BUT, it would have been even more so if you and Tim had used a drone and a hi-viz "bone" R2S to show overhead footage of each of the four retrieves you try to describe. Of course, this video was made way back in 2014, when drones weren't as common as breakfast cereal! I just wonder if you and Tim would consider doing a demo session with a series of your favorite surface (or near-surface) baits-particularly glides. Just a thought . . . Chris
Love how you two are like salt and pepper with styles. Both catch em but more about finding a style that works for you. Super vid again, really like how you broke it down. Keep the great content coming 👍👍
I use them on the Colorado River and just a straight normal retrieve works fantastic I haven't had to twitch it or anything like that to hook up just a steady retrieve crushes the stripers
I know this is a super old video but thought I'd leave a comment.. I've also been throwing my smaller glide baits on a crankbait rod. I use a endurance 7116 CB. Works great so far
This is my first year swimbaitimg and I have caught my first five swimbait fish on s waver can't wait to get another rainbow trout the sixth was caught on a jackal gantral jr
Just getting in to swimbaits this year and learning one hell of a lot from these vids you guys have produced over the years. I also just bought one of your a-rigs and will be trying that for the first time. I am starting to think that if the wires on an a-rig don't spook first that braided line is not going to either :)
I'm excited about using it for the incidental musky. The river and a few lakes around me have good musky populations. I don't like handling them (they stink!!! and you can't seem to easily wash it off) but I do like the take and the fight.
Hey guys thanks so much for all the tips! I've been going to my local pond lately throwing my gantarel and hudds Everyone looks at me like I'm dumb but 2 days ago I landed a 5.2lb and yesterday I caught my pb weighing in at 7.5 lb! I don't think I could've done it without you guys!! Is there a way I can email you my pb to show you guys?!
Hey tactical bassin guys i love your channel and I’m kinda knowledgeable about soft plastic baits and glide airs and where to throw them but I’m wondering where would a good place to throw a multijointed bait like a bull shad or a triple trout?
You guys have gills don't you? Joking. I'm going to try swimbaits at my local lake. It's known for quality and not numbers. Hopefully I can catch a nice one. Man I wish I was out in California. Awesome channel guys.
Thank god for this video. Just caught my first swimbait fish also on the 168. Also happed to be my new pb 5lb 3oz. Pennsylvania lunker. Thanks for all the great videos.
Alright, I'm sold. However, I'm unsure when I should be throwing the s-waver. Should I be throwing it when I would typically be using a topwater and/or a squarebill? Thanks for your help Tactical Bassin!
Thanks as always for the informative videos! I recently got into swimbait fishing, and my favorite type so far has definitely been glidebaits. I was wondering what kind of of line Tim throws those glidebaits on for the Swaver 200, I know 15-17 pound fluoro's actual strength can vary quite a bit.
Chen He I only use straight flouro when I feel that the fish are line shy. I switch between Sunline Shooter (Open Water) and Seaguar AbrazX (Around Structure -Dock,Trees ect.) If you can get away with braid to a leader I HIGHLY recommend it. If you haven't already check out this video Matt did www.tacticalbassin.com/blog/why-you-should-use-braided-line-part-1 You have so much more sensitivity and you go through a lot less line when only tying leaders. Hope this helps!
tacticalbassin Thanks for the answer. I just don't like the feel of braid under my thumb, and the sound it makes when I am retrieving. I know there is plenty of advantage a braid can offer, but I am just a recreational fisherman so I don't feel like its worth it to me.
Been throwing the 168 over here in Florida. first fish was my pb at 11.2. Thanks tactical bassin! Since then its been tough. ive had tons of strikes and follows but cant get many to the boat. I land one in five is that just the nature of a heavy treble hook bait or do i need to make an adjustment?
First off, congrats on the monster! Its all in how you fight them... go to heavier line and PULL HARDER! Forget that it has small trebles... treat it like a giant bait, not a crankbait and you'll start getting them in the boat.
Hey guys! Awesome vid! Picked up my first 168 and hoping to break it in here in the next few weeks. Curious about the drawing power of these baits in spring and summer time. If I fish this 3-5 feet off a wall of brush or tules, will the fish be willing to come all the way out to track and eat it. I just don't wanna throw it anywhere too close to snags until I get the hang of the bait. Thanks!
I love my s waver and have been catching good fish on it but is there a trick when casting it that it doesn't sound like I casted cement block when it hits the water? Maybe it's just the nature of the beast or maybe it draws the fish in? Thanks for all the informative videos, I've seen them all!!! 🐟
Gotta love seeing the curious diving ducks pop up right behind them. For those that can't afford electronics look for those birds or any bird diving under the water and you'll find bait fish typically.
Tate Kasner Your'e welcome, thanks for watching! You can definitely throw a trout bait. The lake where this is filmed has never seen a trout and they love trout baits!
Is it ok to throw a 1 5/8 oz bait on a rod that advertises to only handle up to 3/4 oz? I was looking at Tim's 168 setup on the Dobyns 764 CB rod and was wondering if that was an error.
I throw a Dobyns Fury 734c with a 13 Fishing 7.3:1 Concept A for the R2S S-Waver 168, kinda work it like most top water treble hook baits. I throw most of my 1/2oz+ jigs, spinners, chatters and smaller glide/swimbaits. anything smaller and I go to my Medium heavy fast action rod unless its a crankbait, then its a medium power med/moderate spinner like im throwing a ned/neko.
The fish catches at the end I can see you are using the lite trout color but is the other fish catch on a custom color? Awesome Video too, I can't wait to get out and fish these!
Austin Chapman Thanks for watching Austin. You're going to love them! The 2nd one is called "The Warden" and is available in the 200 size. If you do your shopping at tackle warehouse we'd sure appreciate you getting there via one of the links on tacticalbassin.com , that's how we keep the lights on and advertisement free. Thanks bro! Good luck on your next trip!
Great video. I am new to glide baits. I tournament fish in Minnesota. Best 5 fish. What size of glide baits do you recommend. Can you get 5 bites a day on the baits or they more of a kicker bass bait. Where do you see glide baits fitting in my part of the country? Thanks for all the awesome bass wisdom you share!
Thanks for the help! I just started watching you guy about 2 months ago and I'm into swimbaits now because of you guys! I found a s waver couple days ago on the bank! And what knot do you use to connect your leader?
UNI KNOT. I use it for years. Very strong. Just remember to tighten line when it is wet (use water or saliva). I use 20 kg flourocarbon leader + 29kg braid.
Damn I’m gonna have to start getting into glide baits.. BTW tactical- why were you rod lifting them into the boat there at the end, I mean I know it’s a treble hook but isn’t that risky for losing the bass/can’t it rip the lip on the bass real bad? I’m by no means giving you crap, just wondering if you choose to rod lift them out of the boat for a reason.
Do you guys ever have problems with your braid "burying" itself in the spool when using it to throw big swimbaits? I switched from ~50braid to ~25lb mono so I don't bury the line after hookups. Thx, keep up the good work!
@@otroflores91 I did and have made sure it is really tight when first putting it on, but it never stays that way and I end up burying line. That's 100% braid though, no leader.
Ray C There are a lot of reasons why we do that. Better sensitivity, responsiveness from the bait, stronger hooksets, to name a few. If you search for "How to adjust to braided line" I have a video that really breaks it down. I hope that helps! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
Ray C No worries bud. Tim throws them on flouro from time to time but I really don't like the way they sink on it. Braid/mono keeps it right where I want it in the water column.
I've seen some videos of guys modifying their Swavers to have a wider glide by shaving down the leading edge of the main body where the back half hinges and hits it. In theory, this produces more of an acute angle when the tail flops from left to right, and in turn creates a wider glide. Have you tried such a modification? Wanted your expertise before I start filing away at a new bait.
We've seen it and we don't do it. It absolutely creates a wider glide but we don't believe it creates an action that gets bit better than stock. The stock waver gets CRUSHED so we aren't messing with a good thing.
What locations does the S waver excel in? Like points or backs of coves??? What kind of depth are you targeting? This bait, crankbaits and spinnerbaits are my three baits I need work on.
Do they make polarized clip bonds? I need to remedy my glasses problem. I wear bifocals and don’t have a lot of money to buy an expensive pair of polarized bifocal glasses. Do you know of any tricks or anywhere I can look to help this problem out. Thanks guys I know this is kind of a different question I’m just really grasping at straws here! Keep on doing what you guys do. You guys rock
Going to apply this technique next trip. I had a giant spotted bass follower I'd say 8+ easy yesterday. I panicked and paused the bait and the fish lost interest.. Hoping I can improve my swimbait skills soon.
forumsquad8 Generally my leaders are long enough that they stop right in front of my reel when I wind up to make a cast. Depending on the rod that is 6-8 feet long.
I don't know if you guys would know this, but did Dobyns change there number system for their power rating? Because now the 764 is a heavy power rod instead of a medium heavy power.
Hey guys, I live on Smith Lake in Alabama and fish there 3 to 4 times a week. I'm hoping to take my fishing to the next level with big swim baits. Two questions. Will the fish eat a trout colored bait even if there aren't trout in Smith Lake. And could you maybe answer what time of year you focus on certain patterns like deep point or seawalls or floating docks...etc? Thanks
+Lee Mattox Trout colored baits work everywhere, don't worry about it. Generally the overhead cover doesn't come into play in a big way until air temps get up high.
Brother i came from my home state of Arizona where we have trout in all our lakes and rivers and wuld stick pigs on hudd 68 special, now livin in Florida I couldn't find a freshwater trout if I tried and neither could the hawgs I stick on the same hudd lol but they sure find and eat it.
can u guys do a video on the braid to flouro knot you guys use, my knot keeps breaking and I keep losing my big baits. is there something specific you guys do to keep the guides from killin my knots? and liter length too?
Matt, I watched a video with you guys a few years ago using glide baits at clearlake catching one after another, it looked like county park to me, it was more a raw video with three guys in the boat , no music, I cant seem to find it anywhere anymore, can you send me a link to that video if you know which one I am talking about
I can’t believe I’ve been subscribed to TB for over 10 years! This video brings back good memories! Matt & Tim have upped my bass game so much over the years I can’t thank em enough!
Wish I could had a guide trip with you guys while you were still on Clearlake
I just started fishing a swimbait for largemouth for the first time today and this s waver is the first swimbait I have decided to try. Before even watching this video I was actually just instinctively going with reeling it really slow 5x and then two twitches and repeat. Glad to see I wasn’t too far off my thinking. I’m going to try the really long pull back method. Thank you for the suggestions.

I wish we had swimbait tournaments in Minnesota
Back here at 2023.
Such a gem of an old video
I use these retrieves (I just use quick 1/2 or 1/4 reel handle turns instead of rod twitches) to fish glide baits and the the s-waver 168 has become my most successful bait ever for big fish! Thanks!
You forgot to mention this will literally catch every pike in the lake. Great info on a great lure!
Perfect timing for this old video to pop up on my phone… I’m heading to an urban lake near my house here in So Cal to practice throwing a variety of glide baits on Tuesday… maybe even hook into a few big bass as a bonus.
I was watching this video while fishing a glide bait for the first time. I slowed down my retrieve and caught a 3 lb bass!

"It's cuz he likes spinning rods." Lmao.
Funny thing is matt ended up switching to Tim's combo I believe
Matt you're awesome for helping everybody out. I wish there were more that gave this good of advice here on TH-cam. There's a pond I fish in Wisconsin that has two different species of trout in it. Difficult to believe the quality of this video was 7 years ago. Nice work!
You are a great teacher Matt..

Excellent, excellent work guys! Thanks for coming back to this subject and making the follow-up video. Most useful 15 minutes of my week!
John Pendleton Thanks John! It took some time but we finally had the water conditions to get it done. Its that time of year, good luck out there!

John Pendleton aaaaaaaA
This is my first year swimbaitimg and I have caught my first five swimbait fish on s waver can't wait to get another rainbow trout the sixth was caught on a jackal gantral jr
Good video. I would have liked footage of the bait in the water with each style. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Mike!
Have watched this at least 3 times now that I got a few swimbaits for Christmas. Wouldn't go anywhere else to learn the art of swimbaits/glidebaits
Thanks Hunter!

St Croix Premier heavy SPINNING rod. Works like a charm w the 168. Im not afraid to admit it
I fish more like Tim I guess, and perfer my Curados over Calcuttas! Hahaha. Great video!
Thanks for this video. I'm from the northeast and have been looking into getting a 168 but wouldn't know where to begin and this gave me a lot of info

That first fish catch at the end is where I caught my first 7lb!!!
Nice!!
TacticalBassin do u guys do braid to leader on your crank bait rods?
Nice video my man. Good information overall. The set up I would fish would be a shorter rod and slower gear ratio reel, due to me fishing from a yak.
Gotta love seeing the curious diving ducks pop up right behind them. For those that can't afford electronics look for those birds or any bird diving under the water and you'll find bait fish typically.

They'll definitely work. Try the S-Waver 168 size to start. You'll love it! Here it is: bit.ly/2aiu8Sh
Hey Matt I'm just getting in to swim bait fishing and plan to pick up the S Waver. I'm curious what your favorite colors are.
light trout. don't matter where your at.
What size replacement hooks and split rings for the 168???? I’ve looked through tons of videos and comments.
Size 2 Owner 3x treble with size 5 owner Hyperwire split rings.
great video guys! Just wondering what hooks / Split ring. you would change to for the 200
Thanks for the help! I just started watching you guy about 2 months ago and I'm into swimbaits now because of you guys! I found a s waver couple days ago on the bank! And what knot do you use to connect your leader?
Thanks for supporting us Regio! Search "Tacticalbassin braid knot" and we've got a how to video on making the leader connection the right way.
My question is where in the water column are u retrieving it in? Deep always sub surface suspended?
whatsyours1 We fish them from just under the surface down to the bottom in 15-20 feet of water. Most of the time though, 4-8 feet is typical.
Very good info, I find Tims preference is the same as mine.
Do you guys ever have problems with your braid "burying" itself in the spool when using it to throw big swimbaits? I switched from ~50braid to ~25lb mono so I don't bury the line after hookups. Thx, keep up the good work!
Did you spool the braid up yourself? Braid needs to be spooled on really tight.
@@otroflores91 I did and have made sure it is really tight when first putting it on, but it never stays that way and I end up burying line. That's 100% braid though, no leader.
Great video again Matt. Is there a reason you use braid with a leader versus straight mono or fluoro
Ray C There are a lot of reasons why we do that. Better sensitivity, responsiveness from the bait, stronger hooksets, to name a few. If you search for "How to adjust to braided line" I have a video that really breaks it down. I hope that helps! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks I thought about that video afterwards
Ray C No worries bud. Tim throws them on flouro from time to time but I really don't like the way they sink on it. Braid/mono keeps it right where I want it in the water column.
I'm always just leary of having extra knots. And have finesse on the brain, natural sinking, etc
Do you guys use clips on the s-wavers or tie direct? Seems like they get more action on a clip.
Always tie direct. The muted action seems to fool them a lot better.
amazing video guys! very nicely well put together and explained!
***** Thanks brother!
Hey Matt how come you guys don't throw straight mono or flouro
Hunter D they do when the fish are spookie or the water is really clear.
This bait, crankbaits and spinnerbaits are my three baits I need work on.
just got one can't wait to use it for largemouth and stripers
You'll love it!
Clip on’s not clip bonds. Sorry for the miss spell
Check out these Fitovers

How well do glide baits in general work on fall bass, and would it be beneficial to go a little small that time of the year?
Going to apply this technique next trip. I had a giant spotted bass follower I'd say 8+ easy yesterday. I panicked and paused the bait and the fish lost interest..
Hoping I can improve my swimbait skills soon.
Great video with an amazing ending! Thank you :)
Hey Matt is there any way you could recommend split rings and after market treble hooks for the 168s??
Cassidy Stringer Owner Hyperwire size 4 and Owner ST-36 treble size 2. I also upgrade to the 3x hook if I expect the fish to be BIG.
I fish in Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn, I expect some pretty large fish! Thanks so much for the info
Hey Tim and Matt.. which knot do you use to connect the braid to the leader? Thanks!
Wooo another great video full of good info. Thanks guys! Can't wait to get out there and fish with you yahoos! Fish on!
Yeah buddy!
Matt & Tim, Thanks for your videos! I've learned alot. I would love to fish out there, looks amazing. PS: your jigheads work great on the keitechs.
Thank you!!
Great tips Matt. How much leader do you typically use? Thanks again
forumsquad8 Generally my leaders are long enough that they stop right in front of my reel when I wind up to make a cast. Depending on the rod that is 6-8 feet long.
Great info, You guys are literally teaching me how to use a swim bait! Tight Lines!!
Thanks for watching!
How long of a leader do people suggest? And any tips on reducing line catches on the treble hooks would be great! LOL
8-12 foot leader
Hey Matt! Quick question do you or Tim modify your s-waver? I see a few people shaving the joint down on youtube.
Thanks,
Robert
Not at all. We've seen the vids too but we prefer them fresh out of the package.
Just curious why not throw straight braid ? Just for line shy fish?
I don't know if you guys would know this, but did Dobyns change there number system for their power rating? Because now the 764 is a heavy power rod instead of a medium heavy power.
What knot do you use for braid to flourocarbon leader
Josh, this is the video for you. th-cam.com/video/XKn9Pgl1sYI/w-d-xo.html
TacticalBassin I don't know how to get to that video, can you tell me the name of the video so I can go on your channel and find it
Nevermind I found it lol
Okay cool. Hope that helped!
FG knot
Hey guys, I live on Smith Lake in Alabama and fish there 3 to 4 times a week. I'm hoping to take my fishing to the next level with big swim baits. Two questions. Will the fish eat a trout colored bait even if there aren't trout in Smith Lake. And could you maybe answer what time of year you focus on certain patterns like deep point or seawalls or floating docks...etc?
Thanks
+Lee Mattox Trout colored baits work everywhere, don't worry about it. Generally the overhead cover doesn't come into play in a big way until air temps get up high.
Brother i came from my home state of Arizona where we have trout in all our lakes and rivers and wuld stick pigs on hudd 68 special, now livin in Florida I couldn't find a freshwater trout if I tried and neither could the hawgs I stick on the same hudd lol but they sure find and eat it.
great video guys....how long of a leader do you guys generally throw on?
haha found the video. thanks
Ha! You're faster than we are. :-)
Are you using direct line tie, snaps, or split rings ?
can u guys do a video on the braid to flouro knot you guys use, my knot keeps breaking and I keep losing my big baits. is there something specific you guys do to keep the guides from killin my knots? and liter length too?
the Alberto knot or don't use a leader at all you don't need one
When fishing pike and musky do you use wire leaders and if so what
Great detailed video. Thanks so much.
Matt, I watched a video with you guys a few years ago using glide baits at clearlake catching one after another, it looked like county park to me, it was more a raw video with three guys in the boat , no music, I cant seem to find it anywhere anymore, can you send me a link to that video if you know which one I am talking about
found it th-cam.com/video/-kId1RvVIWs/w-d-xo.html
