    Ciao guys and welcome back! Today it was a sunny day and I decided to do a little vlog about a topic that I wanted to talk for really long time...In todays video I'll give you 10 good reasons to chose the Panasonic Lumix S1 over the S5, considering also the firmware updates of 2021.
    Don't forge to like the video and to subscribe to the channel!
    *Regarding the reason number 3 = on the S1H there's a lock switch but not the front switch, that is nice to have.
    Panasonic S1 = geni.us/mzfi
    Panasonic S5 = geni.us/HkMB

      Is there any noticeable difference in sharpness between the two cameras with the same lens and f-stop? Imaging-resource and dpreview studio samples show S1 significantly sharper than S5 at all ISOs for the same f-stop. Sharpness is my main requirement.

    I already own an S5 and it's absolutely incredible!! I was looking for another Lumix camera to pair it with, and I think I'll get a used S1.

  • @BigAntVideo
    @BigAntVideo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Totally agree with this.
    I opted for the S1 over the S5 too. Very happy especially with the firmware upgrade. I actually like the weight - it helps with keeping it steady - and for me the option of micro HDMI on the S5 was a complete disaster.
    I feel the S1 is better made (might be wrong on this), and I also really like the top LCD screen.
    Because people are going for either the s5 or S1H you can get serious bargains with the S1 too :)

      thanks, I like the excellent video features in Panasonic, unlike R6, v-log, but one problem is crop 4k 60p and 4.2.0, R6 in turn, allows reading from the entire sensor and 10 bit 4.2.2
      Nevertheless, I still lean towards Panasonic, the s1 seems to be a more serious hybrid camera with impressive photos and their optimal quality in high resolution, when you can completely eliminate moiré and color distortions and get stunning detail. Canon does not offer such advantages, 20mp seems to be insufficient for today, if Panasonic makes 4k 60p readout from the whole sensor it would be great!

    Great video Luca. I went for the S1 over the S5 as it offers more in the long run, having a higher resolution EVF and the higher resolution back screen is enough to beat S5 in my opinion but the fact that it can do 5k video was the one that convinced me as I do a lot of effects work and having that extra resolution is awesome. Also the extra resolution in 5k produces some awesome B-roll footage too and close-ups of faces and bodies. The S1 Lumix is now my second cam to GH5S and the Sigma fp on RAHANA. The GH5S is my main cam as I can film action easier and the auto-focus is much much better than the S1 and fp.

      @LucaBono.Studio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching mate! I'm glad that you got the S1...the 6K open gate is even better for VFX 😁
      Is it easy to match the footage from the FP with the S1?

    • @SuchetB
      @SuchetB 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LucaBono.Studio I haven't tried that yet although visually when you see the RAW files from the fp and compare them to even the best files on S1, there is a big difference in dynamic range and colours and detail - You have given me an idea for a video haha - I will try and match them and let you know - What I am doing at the moment with the fp is using it for really glamorous scenes in my movie RAHANA where I really want to show the colours and imagery in a vibrant way and in conversations. I am guessing it maybe easier to match the S1 footage with the GH5S although I haven't done that yet either. So I will do a test and see how they look.

    I have an opportunity to pick up a good condition used S1 for pretty much the same price as a used S5. Only negative thing is they don’t sell S1 where I live so I could try and hold it. I’ve heard the weight on the S1 is a lot and can shock at first hold. As I’m new to this I wouldn’t wanna spend too much money on rigging the camera and a gimbal as of now but would rather prefer to shoot completely handheld. Feel like the heavier camera might help me get more stable shots and I’m gonna get Zeiss lenses so no IS on the lenses so better IS in camera would be a bonus. Which one would you recommend me?

    Great summary of the differences. The price difference between the S1 + Vlog update and the S5 is quite small compared to what you will be spending on the system anyway, so I would agree that if the weight and absence of a flip-out screen is not an issue, the S1 will be the better deal.

    I'm really enjoying your videos on the Lumix S series. I have a question as I'm thinking of selling my trusty GH5 and a couple of lenses and then buying either a S1 or S5. The biggest difference for me (or at least my way of shooting) seems to be the EVF and AF. On the GH5 I use the EVF 80% of the time to check I'm in focus and I also have the camera on MF but I use back button focus to get a shot in focus before adjusting any focus the shot might need. So really I have 2 questions! Is the AF in the S1 as good as the S5 with the new firmware update (for video)? And does the EVF really make a difference when checking critical focus?
    Thanks!

    • @LucaBono.Studio
      @LucaBono.Studio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate! Yes the AF performances are the same between the two cameras, but the difference in the EVF is pretty big...the S1 is just a superior camera but bigger, heavier, without the flippy screen (that I hate). Maybe you should go in a shop and try yourself 😜

      Hey Lukasz! Yes you need at least a V60 for 200mbps codecs. With a V30 the writing speed is not enough and the camera will keep a good portion of the file in the buffer before it can write on the card, increasing the risk of mtd files

    Does the S1 have any advantages in terms of image quality or better low light compared to the S5?

      If you film with the atomos ninja V there are no differences...if you film internally, the images of the 6K from the S1 are looking more organic and less digital

    Hello Luca.
    Thank you for your videos.
    I'm planning to buy the S5 or S1, I like the size of the S5 and the screen, but I don't like the micro HDMI, and other limitations 😅
    Do you think with the firmware 2.0 the S1 has the same af performance as the S5?

    Luca, thank you so much for this video---subscribed for more content.
    What an excellent list---and having owned both cameras I thoroughly agree with you on every point.
    That is why I have actually sold my S5 and purchased another S1 to replace it. I have also owned the S1H--but of these three cams I really liked the S1 better.
    The only issue with the S1 when I first owned it was this: as soon as you hit record the peaking drastically diminishes. As you know this makes it very difficult to track a subject if you are shooting as I do---using fully manual lenses and pulling my own focus.
    I wonder: with the latest firmware and all those great new features in the S1----do you know if they have corrected the problem with the peaking? This vanishing peaking only happens with the S1. The S5 and S1H are both fine.---not as good as the GH5s, but very usable.
    There are other issues for me and the S1, but I've been able to work around them---but the peaking was a deal breaker for me the first time I owned it because of my run and gun, fully manual style of shooting.
    Fix the peaking and, for me, I have the perfect camera.
    Thanks again for this video. I'm looking forward to see more of your content! Ciao!

      Thank you so much William! A good workaround for the weak focus peaking is to use the monochrome view. For me it works pretty well! ;)

      @@LucaBono.Studio Good suggestion. thanks so much. Still, it makes me crazy how they cripple cameras like this in such crazy ways. The S1 diopter only goes to +2...the S5 goes to +4. To see the image of the S1 EVF in focus I have to add a diopter to their best rubber eyecup---I glue it to the eyecup.
      The Sony a7sIII EVF--only goes to +3---still not quite good enough---unless you view the EVF with your glasses---which in some ways defeats the whole purpose of the EVF. I and thousands more like me have to have a +4 diopter.
      This is absurd that camera companies do this and cause such needless complications. If I owned a camera company I'd do all I could, offering every possible assist, to help videographers get the very best results with the least difficulties possible.
      How much more would a diopter with a range to +4 cost? Only pennies.
      The only companies I know who don't cripple their cameras in crazy ways: Blackmagic design and Fujifilm. They give you all they can to help you get the shot!
      If you've never tried it: Fujifilm X-t4: best peaking of all makers, bar none, state of the art!... and you can move your focus box anywhere on the screen, punch in, and refocus at any time while filming. I used it all the time on Fujis. You never miss a focus pull.
      What a great company!

    • @LucaBono.Studio
      @LucaBono.Studio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I know and it's sad that it's not possible to punch in while filming and that the focus peaking is not that great... I've always been tempted to get the pocket 6K or the Fuji xt-4, but I prefer to stick in the 35mm sensor size because of my set of lenses (Leica R & Zeiss). I like to shoot wide, 35mm is my normal.
      Hopefully someone will make a good full frame camera at one point... I'm not a fanboy of Panasonic 😉
