I know fiddeyards are non scenic and only there to support the scenic sections but I really do like the one you have built for Chadwick. Great to see a few full length trains in there. Inspiring 🙂
It's so easily done, especially with so many connections if you're used to doing black to the back. Reminds me to build a lever frame and go wire in tube hehe...
Fantastic content Charlie... But the underside of that board looks very complex. I am so glad you know what your doing. Good luck for the completion of the layout. Regards Lisa.
Hi Charlie a great and very interesting video. I am ten years older than you and remember steam very well they used to run down the bottom of my garden smashing stuff. my was was a fireman on them. thanks again Charlie.
Great video as always Charlie, thank very much. You have my sympathy with that wiring problem. See that’s what happens when the phone rings! Hope that Bakewell tart was good consolation prize.
Black to the back, glad I'm not the only one that used that term, bit like righty tighty lefty loosey... Another well presented video Charlie, really enjoy these, just finished my simple N Gauge layout so enjoying that too :)
Hi Charlie. Hope you’re keeping well 😀 That Bakewell tart looks very yummy 😋 As I was born in 57 so my recollection of main line steam is limited 😫 Even though I do like steam and travel on the railway touring company’s days out when possible with my wife now lol 😆 I’m a midland man but always had a passion for western diesels in the 70s when train spotting 😃 So your absolutely fantastic Chadwick model railway is right up my street and brings many happy memories of the GWR in BR days. Like all nighters on Bristol station with holiday specials coming from all over the country putting extra coaches on or pulling off the buffet car 👍🏻 Thanks as always for a fantastic update. Stevie.
Seeing the model of King George V brought back memories of childhood. Being ten years older than you I have fond memories of waiting on a summer evening at Wootton Bassett to see the South Wales Pullman. The sun always shone in those days, and if the locomative was right the evening sun always caught the goilden bell ;-) Thanks again
Hi Charlie. I ran up against the same 'fun' short circuit problem for a very similar reason. I solved it by incorporating a DCC autoreverser module (Available from Block Signalling and other manufacturers) into the nest of wires under the board . More costly of course than a simple red to black wire splice, but effective.
On the ballast try using an eye dropper and dropping drops of India ink washes. It has the effect of making it look like oil stains and other stains. But it’s quick and fun. The ballast takes it quite well.
Regarding the wiring issue, I did something similar. I saw my mistake and thought “I will remember that!” I didn’t! And yes, it was the last section that I checked before I found the issue. Lesson learned. We all do it Charlie, don’t feel bad.
Well, I am a chump Charlie, living overseas (80 kilometres South of Barcelona) I finally had the opportunity to come to the UK, the first time since February 2020. My son has recently moved from London to Devon and to get to him, I had to go to Totnes, twice!. So beforehand, I thought I must have a good look at the signal box especially as I am modelling an invented GWR of the fifties (nationalization has not as yet taken place).Guess what? It completely slipped my mind!! The joys of being old. Oh well, at least I saw my grandson. Thanks Charlie, your videos are an inspiration.
Another of your superb videos which continue to make me feel totally inadequate. Long may they continue. The grandchildren and I have thankfully abandoned ballasting. There is more on the garage floor than on the track. Many thanks
Hi Charlie, nice to see lots of progress being made. Just one small point, with regard to the "error" with the colour of the wires... Rather than introduce another potential high resistance connection with that chock block, perhaps a different way of tackling if the same situation crops up in the future would be to slip some correctly coloured head shrink tube or a sleeve over the wires instead? All the best, Jon M.
Hi Charlie, of all the railway model channels I subscribe to yours is my humble opinion is the best, this country has a dismal rail system, your road trip was great, I still remember steam trains working in and out of Napier, pity nothing left around here of those marvelous days, many thanks from down under in Wairoa New Zealand
Charlie, love the video. I have wired up a one track feeder the same way to my buss wires too. I think we have all done it at some point. I was using those ACCU-LITES VAMPIRE II - DCC BUSS Connection boards to speed along wiring up my feeders. I guess I got distracted and reversed it at the Accu-Lite. Lucky me! I noticed a few comments on the red and black feeders. For the more visually minded, rather than trying to think through it, take one of your less valuable coaches or a freight put a strip of black tape down one side and a strip of red tape down the other side. As you wire up your layout push that car along to remind which wire goes where. If you push through a return loop and find your colors are now reversed, then you need an AR1 or something in that reverse loop. Really simple.
Hi Charlie. Born in the same year 58 and clearly remember Spam-cans and B class steamers passing through Dover town & the new Green EMU's too. My Dad was a fireman on the Southern region for a while after WWII. Regards Alan :o)
Very enjoyable summer update Charlie. I well remember the return to steam with 6000..I saw it come through Severn Tunnel junction with my father. Great stuff. Take care..all the best.
Charlie, Thank you for sharing your update. It is inspiring. Also, thank you for the tipos on the tiny mistakes you have made with the fine details, and balasting. It is very helpful. I am lookign forward to the next set of videos. Cheers, and stay safe, Michael
Hi Charlie, A further tip regarding centrally positioning point blades when ballasting. Once glue has been dripped onto ballast and before it dries get a Qtip and gently hold downwards onto sleeper and gently hold again inside of the point blade. Do this for all moveable areas. This will soak up any glue under the blade and sleeper. You may need two q tips. Sometimes I might use a bit of kitchen towel.
Great suggestion for putting loops at unfinished end just to test already created rails.. About cameras - I see in AliExpress very small WiFi camera, where camera is on flat cable but WiFi module is at other end of cable.. Powered from 5V source. By size, looks like that camera can be installed even in locomotive.. 😂 Great summer update video!
Nice video, as always. If the short length reversed wire colors bug you, I suppose you could use some red and black paint and paint them the correct colors. Philip NYC Area
That steam loco looks like something worth spending some time on to make it special, In your shoes as well as the sound chip, I would add a fire box flicker light, a smoke generator and then some fireman and driver figures.. I think it will be a fantastic addition. Thanks again Charlie, Great video as always.
Some great railway modelling going on Charlie, a lot of really helpful tips and advice as usual. I decided to reduce my train lengths to 5 carriages (but then my layout is only currently 8' x 5' and it's Hornby Dublo 3-Rail of course), mainly to reduce the load and minimize wear and tear as much as possible. I really like the helix idea and having a fiddle yard set below, it makes use of the available space and means there's more places for scenery, buildings and the like.
Great update Charlie as always..love watching you..and yes your Bakery item looks good too..I can almost smell it..thanks for sharing and keep up the great work..Lance
Absolutely brilliant Charlie and awesome video yet again ,, great shot of the helix and your layout with the camera mounted train ,, enjoy your pie and was a lovely gesture by the dude that sent it to you.. I would like to send to you some cream and jam lamingtons that we have here in Australia but with the cost of getting there to the UK and the time it would have taken to get to you the cream would have went off and the cake would gone stale , so I et them !! ,, and they were bloody delicious too , hahaha Anyhoo keep the good work and gr8 videos up. Cheers from John in Australia.
Another great and full of usual information video Charlie, I hope that you and your wife enjoyed the Bakewell tart, looking forward to the next video, regards Paul
Watching this channel has really sparked an interest in trains for me. I live near the Watercress line and they’re TH-cam videos are really good at showing the history of trains in their collection, I’m going to the NRM in York next week and can’t wait.
Hiya Charlie…once again a very interesting and informative video of which we are eternally grateful to you’re knowledge and pointers. Enjoy that Bakewell over a lovely cuppa.. Cheers, Chris
Enjoyed that. Great entertainment. I use a GoPro cube camera for cab rides with half an old cab placed infant of the camera on a conflat so that appears that the camera is inside a loco cab
Another great video Charlie. You really do make them intersting to watch and you're never frightened of highlighting some of your "errors". Luckily for me I was born in 1951 and enjoyed many years of steam so it was nice to see that you invested in a King class engine. Maybe you could add another few preseved examples that were running at the time. I'm sure the bakewell tart didn't last long!!
Lovely update and plenty of good progress …. Great timing as well as I’ve been on the lookout for a better mini-camera that is a reasonable price … very useful and very tempting! 👍
@@ChadwickModelRailway Good news … I purchased a second hand Firefly Q6 from EBay and I’ve tested it … very impressed with the quality; and it fits nicely upon an old Lima CCT under frame (with some Velcro) and fits nicely within loading gauge! I’m using a few cab ride shots for my next video … thanks again for the top tip!
Really enjoyed this one Charlie, sat with a glass of squash after cleaning patio slabs. Now my garden is complete I hope to start on my folding layout, only 8 x 8' so nothing as grand as yours. Keep the video's comming as they keep me interested while I wait to start mine.
Very interesting topics Charlie. One day I'm hoping to complete the final bit of board and track so I can sit and watch the trains go by and up and down the helix.
hI Charlie, Liking your videos a lot, and would love to start with the model train train again. But that was 60 years ago since I had my first Hornby 3 rail set. So much is available now and at I cost I just can't imagine as to what your setup has cost. Wishing you all the best for the future, Clive.
As usual Charlie, interesting, fun and useful information. Glad to see the progress you are making. I am now replacing all my track connections to the bus so I can instakll the barrier terminals as you have done. This comes after a short circuit appeared that took me a weejk and a ton of disaasembly to find. Naturally, as you did, I connected one of the track pairs in reverse. I am guesssing I interrupted what I was doing for a trip to the local pub and when I got back I was reversed! Anyway in the long run a good thing as I fixed the color code and added the terminals and its a lot more maintainable now. Of course, progress was a bit delayed!! Thanks again for a nice video!
Hi Charlie why have you reversed the red and black in west yard. The only point you need to reverse red and black is the shoe fly. What you need to do is fit an auto reversee on rhe shoe fly, make sure the shoe fly will take the whole length of the train.Mike
Lovely vid as always Charlie. One note i will say is, if you have a 6 coach platform. Your hst would fit with the xtra coach back in, just the powercars would overhang the platform ends. But looking good whaat ever you decide.
@@ChadwickModelRailway I live around the wsm area and, i would say back in the old days, But unfortunately it is. lol. The hst's use to overhang the station by about half of powercar each side. It was just a thought. I look forward to your next update, And i will be using some technics that you used for ballasting on my model railway. Take care. Stay safe bud. Look forward to next vid.
Great update. I had been wondering what was going to happen with Chadwick station. It seems like an age since you built the platforms. Line from the cam looks great running over the viaduct and through the junction for the branch station.. Loved the "oh you're back" link.. 🤣
@@ChadwickModelRailway Perfect! hope you include the bay for milk to provide some additional operational interest. That was still in use during your time period.
Very entertaining video Charlie, nice to see trains running, look forward to more scenery so at least one section will look finished while you crack on with others.
Thanks Charlie. The fiddle yard is looking great, and the new wagon mounted camera really does it justice. Looking forward to all the future developments.
Hi Charlie another great and interesting video. You mentioned and showed your new GWR King George V with a rack of Pullman Coach's. The rack of pullmans that ran with KGV were I believe in the corporate colours of Bulmer's Cider Company of Hereford. Bulmer's in Hereford was where KGV was stored when not out on the mainline. I can remember going to Hereford with my dad to see KGV and other steam locos that were kept their on one of the open days.
Great update, you sure have some work ahead. Must confess I made the same mistake with one of my track sections so easy to do, I have also had point frogs switching to the opposite polarity they should be.
That was a long drive to Shepton Mallet to get a Bakewell Tart. You must have thought it was something from Hattons! Paul Lunn suggests a method in Plan 19 of the Peco Setrack Plans Book. He proposes that only a part of the station is depicted. In this way the layout can have the flavour of a main line without full-length trains. Thanks for uploading.
Well done Charlie great vid more food for thought for me take that both ways thanks mate see you in 2 weeks John from Chichester .. ooh must have a pint when your down my way ! yes il buy lol
Had the same problem when I did my helix but I had a long gradient at the other end at the fiddle yard so I had to use a reversing loop module on the slope, ( I only had a single track in and out)
Very enjoyable video once again Charlie. Love the little Hawkeye Firefly Q6 camera. Amazon.de stocks it but its €89.99 + postage from Germany. It doesn't show up at all on Amazon.co.uk. For those of us living outside the UK E Bay has lost its attraction since the UK decided to cut itself off from the rest of Europe with Brexit for some reason. Stay safe. Tony.
Many thanks for your great videos Charlie. One thing I don't understand is why you need a second helix, if (as you say) continuous running can be achieved by 2 reversing loops (top and bottom). I understand you don't want to always see trains immediately re-appearing, but a few holding loops and some automation would sort that out for you.
Remember its completely normal with selective door opening to have the rear powercar and a coach or two on an HST hanging off the end of the platform. Nice vid i best do my own summer update of Harefield.. keep getting asked!
Great stuff. had a brainwave....the thing missing from your layout which might help hide the helix rods is.......Japanese Knotweed, as used (?) by British Rail to stabilise embankments. Much more resilient than adding trees or ivy and creeps everywhere, I've read. Not sure if you can get a miniature species, but if you can create one, you might be onto a good product! Great video as always, and it helps to remind me I should really be making progress on my own layout!
Hi Charlie. I really enjoyed the update. If you’re ever in Australia (assuming we can ever travel safely again) would you PLEASE come and do the wire management on my layout. 😉
I have the exact same camera, but not for model railway use as i don’t have one unfortunately, i noticed when it the train was passing the walls to the left of the track it appeared jumpy..This could be the train movement of course, but it could be the cameras image stabilisation causing it, try with this off and see if it stops this effect happening, then again it could be the frame rate, some experimenting could be in order..Your lay out is coming on and i look forward to the next instalment of Chadwick model railway build...
Thanks for your work Charlie, a truly lovely planned layout. The "track-cam" was interesting, good resolution and low-light capabilities. The only possible negative is poor image stabilisation (not too sure if that is configurable). I use an old Runcam camera on my RC aircraft and that handles movement really well. Anyway thanks again for your videos, the work involved in producing them I am sure is considerable and your efforts are appreciated.
Great to see such progress on the layout. So much done but so much still to do - a few years more videos to look forward to for your fans. What would we do if we ever finished? Personally I love the process of building and perfecting but funnily enough am not much interested in actually playing trains!
Is this a bizarre thought? Having seen your Blue Pullman and camera, it would appear you have the perfect tools to do a 00 scale "Let's go to Birmingham". Perhaps once a full length running track, an opportunity to christen it? Nice update, I've been watching your channel for a couple of years now and really enjoying seeing progress with the layout and picking up so many useful tips.
Hi Charlie, just a thought on train lengths. Back in the early seventies I travelled on the WCML between Euston and Lichfield. On the longer express services passengers had to alight from the first 5 coaches, as the platform at Lichfield wasn't long enough. This was pre CDL. Trains still use short platforms using Selective door opening to prevent people alighting on to the ballast. Keep up the good work. Regards Martin
As usual, a great mix of content, and interesting to see how you coped with the red to the front issue. I loved your idea of having longer "scenic" trains that don't stop at te station, and shorter ones which do. I'll certainly be doing that, as I'm currently in the middle of building my underground storage area!
Just wanted to say, that your videos are a real inspiration to me- even if i build something which is set to the 1920s at a German location. Great work, Charlie !
Cheers Charlie. Good update and you have lots going on .And thank you for finding a good camera. I have looked at them in the past but was never sure about them. But as you have shown in the demo they look good. Just looked up a Q7 and it has wifi witch is better for me.Just have to read up on it now. Cheers Charlie....... Allan.
HST stock was (originally) 7 or 8 car (excluding the power cars) resp. class 253 and 254, resp. Western and Eastern region; the Mk3 coach length meant that the equivalent lengths in Mk1/Mk2 formations was about 11 for the 7 car and 12/13 for the 8 car.
Similar to what I have done. I filed down an old Triang conflat to mount the Camera and used black tack to secure. Had to change the wheels to metal as they were plastic. These cameras are great aren’t they? Layout looks great by the way. Cheers Richard
Thanks again Charlie North of Sydney at Caves Beach and Locked down so your regular broadcast is very much appreciated. Love to hear your mistakes as well. Don't feel so silly. Was in the process of getting down stairs converted by contractors into a railway room and now all on hold. So no railway and locked up!! Your up dates really help. Keep going please Howard
Hi Howard, I’m so pleased that my videos bring some relief in these somewhat challenging times. I do hope that you can soon get jabbed and that normality can return. Regards Charlie.
Awe Charlie... when you sweeten the videos by "selling" your recommendations, it's always a good thing. Your visit to that signal box-turned-cafe... and your additional recording video of that tasty treat is how YOU support Them! Patronage goes around who show the good in their works. Not naughty 😉... Naughty would be you eating the whole tart ( " 11:22 ...We'll share if there's any left..." ) and not telling your dear wife... 😏 not in your wildest dreams, either! 🤣 (Even a short video of "out-takes" please.) Hiya Charlie…once again a very interesting and informative video of which we are eternally grateful to you’re knowledge and pointers. Enjoy that Bakewell over a lovely cuppa.. Cheers, Chris
Thanks Chris, you’re too kind mate. Regards Charlie
Enjoyed that. Great entertainment. I use a GoPro cube camera for cab rides with half an old cab placed infant of the camera on a conflat so that appears that the camera is inside a loco cab
Great idea GF

At 20:36 it looks like the blue Pullman was pushing a goods train then.
No that’s just an illusion mate I’m afraid. Regards Charlie
Sadly Kevin, the Bakewell tart is just a distant memory. Regards Charlie
Lovely update and plenty of good progress …. Great timing as well as I’ve been on the lookout for a better mini-camera that is a reasonable price … very useful and very tempting! 👍
Davidson Parkway Model Railway I'm so pleased that you found the video useful.
Regards Charlie
Why wait?
@@robot7759 Because the boss says so
Good luck but do keep the “boss” onside.
Very interesting topics Charlie. One day I'm hoping to complete the final bit of board and track so I can sit and watch the trains go by and up and down the helix.
He is a very gratifying stage to reach mate. Regards Charlie
hI Charlie, Liking your videos a lot, and would love to start with the model train train again. But that was 60 years ago since I had my first Hornby 3 rail set. So much is available now and at I cost I just can't imagine as to what your setup has cost. Wishing you all the best for the future, Clive.
It’s great to have you onboard Clive.
Regards Charlie
Thanks John, fault finding can be so demoralising.
@@ChadwickModelRailway But oh-so satisfying when solved!
Thanks Robin, it’s just interesting to hear other peoples points of view. Regards Charlie
Thanks Mark, I’m so pleased that you found little cab ride interesting. Regards Charlie
You could certainly do a very good station reminiscent of Totnes with the two middle tracks for fast trains and the Totnes signal box
My intention precisely Lennon, regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway Perfect!
hope you include the bay for milk to provide some additional operational interest. That was still in use during your time period.
Great video and update! Fantastic layout👍 Regards from Stuttgart, Germany. Björn 🤗
Thanks Bjorne, You’re too kind mate. Regards Charlie
Another Great update Charlie, I love the trip around your layout via the new camera. Thanks once again Howard
Thanks Howard, I’m so pleased you could join me for a train ride. Regards Charlie
Very entertaining video Charlie, nice to see trains running, look forward to more scenery so at least one section will look finished while you crack on with others.
I’m so pleased you agree with my planning Les. Regards Charlie
Thanks Charlie. The fiddle yard is looking great, and the new wagon mounted camera really does it justice. Looking forward to all the future developments.
Thanks Dave, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
An excellent point N59, one which I had forgotten mate.
Great update, you sure have some work ahead. Must confess I made the same mistake with one of my track sections so easy to do, I have also had point frogs switching to the opposite polarity they should be.
Yes it’s easy done Rob, however I seem to have cracked the theory of the frog polarity during the build. Regards Charlie
Brilliant update Charlie that little camera is a pretty neat little thing. I do love a good tart looks like you enjoyed it very much!. - Nicholas.
Thanks Nicholas, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
An excellent point but on one track you always lose the loco.
@@ChadwickModelRailway You can always have a banking loco at the other end of the train!
Well done Charlie great vid more food for thought for me take that both ways thanks mate see you in 2 weeks John from Chichester .. ooh must have a pint when your down my way ! yes il buy lol
That’s a very kind offer John. Regards Charlie
Had the same problem when I did my helix but I had a long gradient at the other end at the fiddle yard so I had to use a reversing loop module on the slope, ( I only had a single track in and out)
I’m so pleased you found a workable solution Chris. Regards Charlie
Great video Charlie. It's nice to see the whole room, it gives a really good impression of how impressive the layout is going to be!!
Thanks Al, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting mate. Regards Charlie
Stay safe. Tony.
I know what you mean Tony, it's even worse this side of the water!
Excellent video. Succinct and very informative.
Thanks Colin, it’s very kind of you to say so mate.
Oh, Charlie. I do love your videos! Great views from a track camera - it makes a layout look so different.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Paul.
You are of course right but I do like a challenge!
Remember its completely normal with selective door opening to have the rear powercar and a coach or two on an HST hanging off the end of the platform.
Nice vid i best do my own summer update of Harefield.. keep getting asked!
Even worse, summer will soon be over!
@@ChadwickModelRailway cor tell me about it mate! Though winter is good for us indoor modellers!
We all progress in surges Ian. Sometimes I like to wire others it’s more landscaping.
Hi Charlie. I really enjoyed the update. If you’re ever in Australia (assuming we can ever travel safely again) would you PLEASE come and do the wire management on my layout. 😉
I’ll book the flight straight after breakfast mate. Regards Charlie
Yes an excellent comment. I shall certainly check out where the camera shows poor track work. Regards Charlie
Thanks Flyboy. The track cam is fine for its price but only time will tell.
Great to see such progress on the layout. So much done but so much still to do - a few years more videos to look forward to for your fans.
What would we do if we ever finished? Personally I love the process of building and perfecting but funnily enough am not much interested in actually playing trains!
Many folks in this hobby are builders rather than runners. Regards Charlie
Thanks Ian, that’s very kind of you to say so.
A fair point Martin but I may have coaches trailing over the points.
As usual, a great mix of content, and interesting to see how you coped with the red to the front issue. I loved your idea of having longer "scenic" trains that don't stop at te station, and shorter ones which do. I'll certainly be doing that, as I'm currently in the middle of building my underground storage area!
I’m so pleased that you found my strategy interesting John. Regards Charlie
Great to see you getting to grips with Anyrail Charlie. I know you mentioned you've had help but that's an impressive diagram
Thanks Kev, but the skills belong to someone else, regards Charlie
G'Day Charlie

Great to see you got the KG V running in the end and nice to see it on the layout.

@@ChadwickModelRailway Thank you Charlie.
Great info Timothy, regards Charlie
Similar to what I have done. I filed down an old Triang conflat to mount the Camera and used black tack to secure. Had to change the wheels to metal as they were plastic. These cameras are great aren’t they? Layout looks great by the way.

Hi Howard, I’m so pleased that my videos bring some relief in these somewhat challenging times.
I do hope that you can soon get jabbed and that normality can return.

🤣 (Even a short video of "out-takes" please.)
