Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm sorry but Mark has now run out of these motor kits due to the mad rush of enthusiastic modellers wishing to replace their ailing Ringfield motors.
Rest assured that he has more in the pipeline and in a week or so, Mark will be able to fulfil your orders.
    Regards Charlie

Could you give us his details please ie, eBay shop address etc. Your video was facscinating Charlie, as I’ve a model similar to the remodelled one you used. My is in the same era 30 / 40 years old. Thanks in advance. Frank Hughes

Yep, I was one of those who left it too late! (damn!) Looking forward to re-motoring an old Hornby Coronation Scot, she runs OK but a bit notchy... about 40 years ago, I used to have an HST just like that (and the centre coach had lighting too!), sadly - like so many childhood trainsets, it was sold off by my mum when I left home, er, 30 years ago. Recently scanning a certain auction site, seems there weren't that many around with lighting? I did find a few with the "plunger" pickups like mine had, but not as many as I'd thought.

Charlie, I’m both grateful for the conversion of the treasured old 125 (bought for my son in the early 80’s) and impressed with your skills! I have watched several upgrade videos on TH-cam and found them either incomplete or hard to follow. Your professional (as always) video has changed that and I might even attempt an upgrade of one of my less cherished old locos! I can’t wait for the DCC conversion. A huge thank you 👍

Thanks Steve. Hopefully it will continue to improve with the planned modifications and that you're not in too much of a hurry to have it back.

Another fantastic video Charlie. As luck would have it, my dear dad bought me a Hornby class 43 HST in the early 80’s. Having seen your video, I’ve just looked in the loft and dusted off my old DC loco. I’ve got my order in with Mark’s ‘Horns & Whistles’ eBay shop and looking forward to attempting the heart transplant you have just demonstrated…..what could possibly go wrong!. If my loco survives my ham-fisted motor change then I’ll be ready to follow in your footsteps again and attempt the DCC conversion. I’m so chuffed that your video has showed how it’s possible to breathe new life into an old loco and bring fond memories of my old HST to life again. Thank you.

At last an upgrade to some old Dc stock , being im not Dcc its a relief to see a person ( and i know your a Dcc fanatic ) like yourself taking time to do what you have just done and thats baught life back into our old locos , I have 2 Intercity 125s both from early Hornby and after constant cleaning and running are showing the signs you have just put forward in this video , Now rather than selling them on as used and abused im toying with the upgrade and at a fair price i can keep the old stuff rolling . Another very informative video Charlie ,, Thankyou , keep up the fantastic work .

    Charlie,
Thank you for a great video on the conversion/upgrading of the Hornby Class 43. I also think you have made an extremely valid point regarding the cost of products coming out of the Hornby stable.
I cannot understand why models produced by Hornby from the 1980s command such high prices today. Equally since buying up many other European companies - including Lima - why these older less detailed models cost so much is lost on me. Does Hornby really expect us to believe that the cost of producing an ex-Lima Mk3A sleeper truly is £44.99 or an ex-Airfix Mk2D is £49.49! Given that the Accurascale new highly detailed Mk2B is priced at £49.96, Hornby's inflated prices are not justified. I know the Airfix coaches were ahead of their time, but a model from 1976 being priced roughly the same as the latest tooling technology 46 years later? Really!
For a more direct comparison, look at the Hornby CDA triple pack: £84.99. Then take a look at the Accurascale CDA triple pack £62.46. This is a fair comparison as both toolings are new and model the same wagon. A signifcant price difference is also found with the MHA triple pack from both companies. Hornby - £72.99, Accurascale - £62.46. Given that Hornby is signifcantly larger than Accurascale, you would think they would be more competitive?
In short, Hornby is killing the hobby with these prices.
I would like to see more videos of detailing or upgrading older models. It would really bring back the 'modelling' in railway modelling. Keep up the good work.

Looking at the brand new versions of Locos and comparing them to the old - the level of detail is now so fantastic - look at the red lining and separate hold rails on the boiler of the P2 as an example of detail. To buy second hand older versions on eBay really depends on one's acceptance of reality to 'bodged' or almost right and possibly passable in the dark. But for this one must be prepared to pay the price. One is fortunate not to be in the recording industry where a good microphone can be £2 - 3 thousand - and more! Same applies to Cameras and Lenses in Photography!

Thank-you Charlie for the detail and production quality of this video. I have an older version 125 on display to remind myself of when I maintained the real things at Laira in the early 80s. Compared to the Class 50, never mind the 08, the 125 was cutting edge. To be alongside the Paxman Valenta power unit when at full revs was quite an experience. Great to see the results of your modification. Regards.

Very nice job Charlie. I know where to send my errant locos for a refit now!!! Kidding.
I watched a video the other day lamenting the price of a lesser but similar vintage loco (basically Thomas the Tank Engine in other livery) which was the thick end of £60. I had no idea Hornby were trying to kill off the older modellers with heart attack inducing prices for larger locos. Silly money. Cheers

It's nice to know there are so many options available to us. We are living in a golden age of model railroading!
All of this reminds me of when I worked on hot rods. Some of us that had the time and ability, could tinker and build our own and save a lot with sweat equity, or of you have limited time but more to spend, can get one all done!

They are not perfect but I'm a big fan of the old Ringfield motor, I have a lot of locos from this era that use it, I find many of the motors are still good and easy to maintain. In my experience spares are plentify and having the ability to swap them out with these kits makes older ringfield locos an appealling option on a budget.
I would love to have an East Midlands HST but I'm sticking with my old Lima Virgin XC HST as I simply can't justify the costs of the new one, its not just the loco price but since it has no coaches you need to add those on top as well. I wish they'd sell the packs that have the power/dummy car and 1-2 coaches as a slightly better value option.

  • @EsotericArctos

Hornby have put their price up across the board by almost 10% again from what I can see. They did the same a few months ago as well......
I have one of those Early HST 125's as well. I actually kept the Ringfield motor and DCC Converted it. I got a LED Light kit for mine from Blackcat so it has directional lighting
The original 3 pole Ringfiield is a bit noisy, but it actually crawls really nicely. I do have a CD Motor kit from Straphpeffer Junction, but I haven't fitted it yet. It seems to run better on DCC than it did on DC. I don't think the model you have is indicative of the bahaviour of that era of HST in general.
I found the Chinese made version (which I have) has proper pickups on all wheels and proper isolation between the motor and chasis so was very easy to convert. The British made version does not have the same isolation between motor and chasis and is a lot trickier to convert without doing the whole motor change out.

I did the same light conversion and just serviced the motor. Fitted a ZIMO £20 decoder and the loco runs perfectly, and like yours, creeps also. A budget Lais DCC decoder fitted to the trailing power car completed the lighting set up.

Hi Charlie from sunny Thailand. I am a complete beginner and grey of hair. I purchased some track, some locos, loads of carriages and assumed that would be it! Hmm bad move, I should have watched your posts first. So seeing as how my locos buzz but don't go anywhere I believe I need to replace the motor then convert to DCC, Sending the locos back to the UK is both expensive and very time consuming plus I have already paid duty on the used locos and would undoubtedly pay again on their return which when you total it all up equals the cost of buying a new one. What was the expression you said about buying things that you never use? So I am now a subscriber and watch your videos with great interest. I also love your enthusiasm and sense of humour. Keep it up please!

A very informative video and you gave an excellent conversion process for upgrading / replacing the old Hornby Ringfield motor assembly. The reassembled model looks and runs beautifully, much more responsive. Totally agree with you about modern Hornby, they're going to have to be careful as they are amongst those manufacturers that may price themselves out of business, maybe they need to reassess things and pull back production to the UK from China to save on shipping costs and the like.

Hi Charlie, not sure if this has been mentioned in previous comments, but when soldering try to keep the heat shrink tubing as far away as possible from the joint, or you run the risk of it shrinking on you, and then it won’t go over the joint….How do I know, because I’ve done it…Already done several of these conversions myself, including adding DCC decoders, and LED lights, but you’ve done another great job. Stupid price that is for a train, don't know where they get their prices from, these things cost about £25 to make believe it or not, if they keep this up they will end up going bankrupt. hornby are using covid as an excuse to bump up the prices, quite sickening really. anyway charlie brill little video and i did something similar to this to old lima stock years ago, what i used to do is fit 2xringfield motors to various lima diesels this then gives twice the torque and twice the poles (6 pole) they ran beautiful, but i never used oil only lithium grease you can buy a whopping silicone sealant sized tube of this stuff from Jims Hardware in Penzance for 3 quid, its bloody brilliant stuff been using it for at least 20 years, grease tightens up the tolerances of gears etc this makes the motors run hell of a lot quieter, the beauty of old lima models is theres literally a ton of space inside to fit very large speakers too, id also say the yellow colour of the old models is more accurate, brill video as always!

  • @glenshielrailway5696
    @glenshielrailway5696 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I hate to say it but I truly can't see model railways surviving more than a couple more generations at most at this rate. How is anyone under 30 supposed to get in to the hobby with prices as ridiculous as that? If that was for a full eight-coach set I'd understand it, but breaking the £200 for a pair of power cars is already bad enough, £300 is just ludicrous. Bachmann also having a go with their 'deluxe' Class 47's. I just can't tell the difference between them and the older ones minus the glazing if the light just so happens to hit it right.
But enough ranting! What an improvement that new motor was, breathing new life in to a classic model. I can't wait to see it converted to DCC. I hope you take on the extra challenge of giving her working tail lamps, Charlie!
    Take care. Mike.

I bought this exact Hornsby HST set with a total of 4 coaches - one of which is a buffet car and all with lovely smooth running replacement metal wheels - for £80 boxed and delivered to my door. I then used Steathperrer Junction’s version of this kit and the result is an amazing improvement- my 5 YO son loves his new train!
Only problem is the power cars came converted to LEDs and I can get both together lighting white or red when the train is runny get one way or the other - which wires do I need to swap?!

Like you said Charlie why spend £363 on new tech, when one can buy a few bits and bobs to upgrade an older model with a bit of time and effort. So probably for the £63 in parts and the other £300 on buying lots more vintage coaches to make up a prototypical full-length train. Plus buy that Kernow Class 41 Warship out of the change. Well done to Mark for producing this motor upgrade kit and extending the life of an old model. Now if only I could get a cheaper upgrade for a multitude of worn-out body parts for myself than paying for a private surgeon, and still have change to go on a full board holiday, with spending money of a few grand, LOL.

Love your work Charlie! I thought it might be worth chiming in with regard to the direcional difference in top speeds that tends to be quite common with many older ringfield type motors, particularly Hornby and Lima ones. As these motors are made made to fairly a fairly crude design and tolerances, you will often find that the timing of the motor is not particularly finely tuned, and this will cause the motors to run slower in one direction. This can cause be adjusted by way of ever so slightly advancing or retarding the position of the interference fitted collector plate upon iits axis on the armature. I find i need to do this with probably about a thrd of the old Lima locos i buy used.

The issues with this are many. Firstly, it appears that to get a motor slim enough to do this correctly, without the motor hitting the inside of the body (9/10mm), you can now only get a 6V one. These 12v motors are 12mm thick and will hit the inside of the body and will reduce the tightness of the curve the loco can now travel around. With the 6v motors, especially with DCC, you are going to have to half the votage, either by programming they DCC chip, or by adding a diode drop-down bridge. But, for all that effort, what do you actually get? You are still running a locomotive with reviled traction tyres, and you are only picking up the voltage from one bogie, and not two. Plus you are getting all that noise from all those cogs on the side of the ringfield body. On a side note, you put the cogs on the wrong way around, as there is a raised lip on the cog that if positioned against the motor will create a gap between the main part of the cog and the metal of the motor. Putting them on the wrong way around will further increase the noise and cause wear.
If you were to remove the body of your edition of the 125, you will see two motorless bogies with a central motor with drive shafts, which is infinately superior, allowing for both rail electric pick-up from both bogies, preventing drop out over points, plus you are getting eight wheel drive with no traction tyres rahter than the lob-sided two wheels with tyres you get with this conversion. However, this is a far harder project needing a greater level of modelling skill, plus the expense of doner motor and bogies, costing in the region of £75 from Bachmann spares. But this is still a bargain compared to the absolute silly money Hornby are now demanding across their entire range. It is also something I am considering for the old 1980 APT model, since the new version is an astronomical £550. I have seen a couple of them done on places like RMWeb. The other alternative is to replace the Ringfield with a Tenshodo motor bogie, needing to get a model with the correct wheel span and the abailty to be housed in the wheel frame cradle. The downside of this approach is that you are still driving your train from one bogie and so you will need to add a fair amount of weight to improve traction.

Hi a very good video, though this arrangement has been going for some time now, I would like to point out that oiling plastic gears is not the best idea!
Please don't think I'm being an arse but I've bought many a second hand locomotives where over oiling has caused gears and even wheel spokes to softened the plastic,
Many a bachmann split chassis models have passed on to the locomotive graveyard because of oiling,. Oil in my mind is for metal to metal lubricantion,, there is a very cheap grease
Special made for plastic gears not only does it lubricant but it makes the gears run smoother and quieter a small pot cost about a quid, post free from China and I recommend you get some........Mark

You don't mention that there are two motors you can order - a 6 volt one and a 12 volt one. The 6-volt one gives better acceleration, but is at more risk of burning out than the 12 volt one! Hornby says they don't recommend this conversion as these motors are subject to overheating. It might be as well to point out the conversion should not be done for locos which are to run continuously for more than an hour, for example at an exhibition. A good video clearly explaining. I have still got this job to do. I ordered the kit ages ago, still haven't got around to it! Thanks for uploading.

I can see the need for a new tool: "Variable Diameter Wheel Extractor" I recently bought a new extractor tool for removing a keyed part from the drive spindle of a powered lawn mower - and there was a lot to choose from - however this would be somewhat smaller - but the principle will be the same! There are special 'circlip' removing and inserting tools. What solder do you use - leaded - or - lead-free? I understand the lead-free variety tends to give dry-solder joints. Yuk!

Hi Charlie, out of interest and accuracy a 'cog' is an individual 'tooth' on the rim of a' gear wheel'. The term was originally used in respect of wooden gears used in milling corn etc, in those gear wheel the cog is an individual replaceable 'component which obviously wear as they are made of wood. As you know the term 'cogging' is an intermittent movement by a motor and refers to it moving one tooth at a time on the driving gear. The small gear wheel you pushed on to the motor is usually referred to as a pinion. However this is a great video again, thanks.

To run a 6 Volt DC motor to run with a 12 volt DC supply, safely? Use two 10k resistors rated at 1/2 watt each and each resistor is soldered to the positive and the other soldered on the negative side of the motor and the tails of the resistors to the supply 12 volts DC supply from the rail contacts or DCC chip.

Hi Charlie Great video. Hornby pricing has gone mad. I have converted an old Virgin HST with new motor and lights. Planning to try weathering for the first time on the model as well. Thanks for sharing your great knowledge. Thanks Roger👍

Great video Charlie, I've converted a few old Lima / Hornby locos this way and added led lights and dcc decoders, resprayed, which I'm very happy with. The results at a fraction of the cost of a new loco. Still looking for a class 43 set to do though!!! Keep up the good work...Just finished a Lima class 47 in Colas colors which I'm over the moon with..

It’s in the Show More tab.
On a phone, there should be a small down arrow, under the right hand edge of the screen.

I have seen this video many times and havin got my hands on a Lima 125, I have been trying to find a motor the same as your Hornby, would the same motor fit into a Lima, which was sold back in the late 80s as I would like to put a decoder into it. Thank you for any help or input you can give.

Hi Charlie, great work! I also changed a couple of motors in my Lima Trains. I searched a long time in the Net and finally found a seller in GB. If it is ok for you, I’ll post the link here. Please let me know. Greetings from Germany Axel

Superb video Charlie, very interesting 👍. One question, what's the difference between the ring field and new motor? All I can think is that maybe the new one could be a 5 or even 7 pole motor instead of 3,or is there more to it than that?Just be interesting to know.

Just a comment about circlips and E-clips - they are different, although both fit into a grove on a shaft. The circlip sits in the grove all the way around (almost), _encircling_ the shaft, hence the name, whereas with an E-clip only the three lobes sit in the grove. This means, pound for pound, a circlip is much stronger but it usually requires a special tool to remove it and it will only come off along the length of the shaft. An E-clip can be removed with a screwdriver and comes off the shaft sideways.

Perhaps it’s a motor issue. Maybe if you took it along to a model railway show, someone might have a look at it.

Make sure all the wheels are the correct way round - if one has been replaced the wrong way round there'll be a short circuit.
