I have made an appointment with Charlie, at the Davis Hall, for his upcoming seminar on "How to wallpaper a hallway through the letter box". I had invited Charlie, on an all expenses paid visit to my home, to demonstrate the technique. Unfortunately for me, and fortunate for Charlie, he declined my generous offer due to prior commitments; not least of which was his ongoing task of producing more eminent and informative videos for us all to learn from.
We had a chap move into his new house just up the road. My wife said he was a gynaecologist. How do you know that I asked her, and she said “ I saw him papering the hallway through the letterbox”.

MDF is still available in Canada, haven't heard anything about it being banned here. All the major reno stores carry it. I agree though, the dust is nasty. Cheers
just to say if your Kadee uncoupler switch is the RS online item, then the green halo can be arranged to only light up when it is pressed and so long as the timer is running, so its normally off and shows when the uncoupler is live.

Brilliant video, and a thing with coupling up to a train , I was taught with the class 10 shunter I used to get to drive was I would get to about 6 foot from the train then stop the loco then move very slowly to ' buffer up ' and with a passenger train very important as you don't want to make the punters in the buffet coach spill their beer or teas ! 😂

Your right about MDF in Canada. Since January 7, 2023, CANFER prohibits anyone from importing, selling, or offering for sale a composite wood product containing formaldehyde unless they comply with its requirements. Composite wood products that exceed emission limits cannot be sold or imported. I did not know this until yoy mentioned it i your video. Thanks Charlie

The safety aspects are really important when dealing with materials used in modeling. I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer, not related to any materials or the like, but I will say use a mask when you do any cutting and the like. You don't want to take the risk. Cancer treatment is not a pleasant thing to go through. On a more positive note, it's lovely to see how this section has come along and to see it all up and running. The whole layout is really coming together well
Good progress on the Layout, my son and I are keenly following the build. We were at the NEC on Sunday, but sadly didn't spot you, but my son Daniel (4), spotted the helix demostration, and said "That's like Charlie's One", I was taken a back at first and wasn't sure what he meant, then I realised he was referring to yours. We had a lovely day at the NEC, Daniel particularly enjoyed the RC Lorries. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Charlie. I, too, have been thinking about tidying up the front of the layout with some kind of facia. I was thinking of screwing it on but that idea of hinges and magnetic catches looks spot-on.
When I see all that wiring and control systems, I'm very glad I just wanted to model a simple Highland Station with a passing loop and a few sidings. If I tried something as complex as your freight yard, I would probably end up blowing not only the fuses in the house, but in the street as well.😫

Wonderful progress. Wiring can be tedious (and difficult) and I appreciate you not showing us most of it, but it's definitely acknowledged. It's like wiring a house. It's expensive, difficult and takes forever, and when done properly, you'll never have to mess with it again. Great video - thanks!
Well flipping heck! I’ve been in Canada 5 years and started building my layout a year ago. No wonder I can’t find MDF! I had no idea that it was banned. I’ve been stuck with hardboard of various shades. You learn something g new every day! Cheers Charlie.

I'm still early in my build and so I'm on the look out for coupling solutions beyond a bit of bent wire! I hope you don't mind my asking, but which do you prefer - building the layout, or operating? I have a bad feeling that I'm spending years building something which when finished will just gather dust - but in the meantime I'll love all the building work. :)

Gday charlie , video 198 helped me with the lighting on the refueling shed i purchased from an english hobby shop which when comparing the english pound to our australian dollar can be quite expensive but a lot of british infrastructure can translate to our railway hobby. I also bought the lights from west hill wagon works and they are a great product but my ham fisted approach in handling these resulted in a few broken attempts but as you say we live and learn. I just want to say thanks for the very informative videos you put out charlie i look forward to every one of them and they are a source of inspiration. Cheers from Graeme
Great Charlie! It's so much fun to see this come to life. I'm not a huge fan of the magnets, or at least I haven't been, but it's really great to see them do their thing. I'm probably too stuck on the old skewer sticks that I see people use in other videos. Maybe more of an American thing? I wonder if it would make N scale switching less fiddly, but then I'd need to make sure all the couplers work that way.

As always a great video, very informative even though I don't have anything like as complexed as your wonderful layout. Two loops of track 2nd and 3rd radius, and a couple of sidings.... DC/DCC.... DC for test/running in of new locos, and for older locos that don't have a DCC socket.... ... but it keeps me happy!

I completely understand the wiring spaghetti as things grow from a previous life a decade or so ago as a hi-fi and AV buff where things got added and taken away, ultimately a rewire of the whole caboodle needs doing but I've still yet to work on a modular concept so all this helps. Hi Charlie your layout wiring is amazing again good video l have done a lot of wallpapering through a letterbox on my layout over the years because of no forward I should have found you channel before l started my layout. Small point when you/we turn on our controllers you/we become the signalman therefore we regulate the layout not play trains 😊👨✈️cheers Stu
As usual first class video. When tracklaying try using thin double sided tape instead of those pesky screws . Easily lifted if you need to before gluing down, and so much quicker
Another fine missive Charlie, thankyou. I find Velcro very good for facial panels and various board attachments. Some might find the idea useful! Although, there are some instances ( your panel for example) where hinges are a more robust method.😊
What I liked most was your surprise that everything went so well 🤣😂Then of course you set things straight by parking the Hymek on the blades stopping the points switching and the universe was back in balance! 😉 I see what you mean about the wallpapering through a letter box analogy, but at least you can access that circuit board easily and the slide in fastener is a great solution 👍 The facia boards will top the job off nicely and I like the simplicity of the design, and I hope you saw the irony in that the design you had does actually resemble a letterbox! 🤓 Didn’t see you at Brum sadly but hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Whoops, serves me right for posting a comment before watching the complete video. You are right about the high-end decoders, I put an ESU Locosound into my Class 08 (Farish) shunter and the shunt function alone for me justified the cost.
Hi Charlie wow all coming along nicely, i have changed all my rolling sock except carriages to magnetic ones another brand not hunt coupling. so it will have to be the hand of god { i should say hand of Tone } uncoupling my wagons.though must say Charlie your uncoupling method is brilliant at really adds to the realism well done. If your experience is anything like mine, I get lots of ‘suggestions’ which sometimes sound like orders. On thing I find myself saying to you, however, is that if you mount all your boards and terminal strips on your facia it sure is a lot easier to do the wiring. You can then just sit in a comfortable chair and wire away. I started out trying to hide all that stuff, but eventually came to the conclusion it is actually an interesting part of the railway. Just a thought, Charley
Charlie, great progress on the freight yard. I really like the idea of the hinged facia board, it makes access so much easier, but I feel for you with the limited space under the track, that is tight. The next series on the Brach station, and surrounds should be very interesting, and I am looking forward to watching progress, and what new tricks and tips you will share. I am not sure what it is about getting older, but Supper, or dinner, just after 5pm appears to be a thing, I get really cranky if dinner is late, when I was younger, any time was fine. Another great video Charlie. It's been interesting and very helpful over the last few weeks with laying those slips and three ways. Track laying over the board joins seems novel to me as all the layouts I've come across have the rails cut with the board join. So you've got me thinking as the layout I'm starting will be as permanent as yours, so maybe I won't complicate it with track cut at baseboard joints. Cheers, Phil B

Great work Charlie. I will be using the ‘triplets’ concept on my layout but as it’s a smaller facility I may go with ‘twins’. I am also going to try and emulate your neat wiring but probably won’t be quite as tidy 🙄
My oldest Brother who has lived in the USA since 1968 sent me over a lot of model railway items including a “KADEE” uncoupler. Not sure if all of the parts are there but will experiment with this as I can see from your experience they have great potential 😇

Great video as usual, the statement that MDF is banned in Canada is incorrect. Though you are correct, that PPE (face masks) need to be worn because it is made of wood flour, not good for the lungs. In Canada they have severely restricted the levels of formaldehyde (used in the resins to bond the wood flower together) emission from the product. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogenic chemical. It is found in small amounts in all woods so it can not be completely eliminated. You should check the specs in your plywood because formaldehyde has been know to be used in the resins used to glue the plys together.
@@ChadwickModelRailway Charlie: I usually figure such out after I have had to disassemble something because I did not make provision for being able to remove an inaccessible piece. That is a very busy location with lots of stuff going on. Again thanks for sharing with us mere mortals.

8:38 Charlie is telling the truth here. Cancer may be a long term result but short term is really unpleasant. At the start the dust didn't affect me but eventually I became sensitised to it and suffered sinusitis for months after my project was finished.

I'm probably too stuck on the old skewer sticks that I see people use in other videos. Maybe more of an American thing? I wonder if it would make N scale switching less fiddly, but then I'd need to make sure all the couplers work that way.

As always a great video, very informative even though I don't have anything like as complexed as your wonderful layout. Two loops of track 2nd and 3rd radius, and a couple of sidings.... DC/DCC.... DC for test/running in of new locos, and for older locos that don't have a DCC socket.... ... but it keeps me happy!

I completely understand the wiring spaghetti as things grow from a previous life a decade or so ago as a hi-fi and AV buff where things got added and taken away, ultimately a rewire of the whole caboodle needs doing but I've still yet to work on a modular concept so all this helps. As usual first class video. When tracklaying try using thin double sided tape instead of those pesky screws . Easily lifted if you need to before gluing down, and so much quicker

I see what you mean about the wallpapering through a letter box analogy, but at least you can access that circuit board easily and the slide in fastener is a great solution 👍 The facia boards will top the job off nicely and I like the simplicity of the design, and I hope you saw the irony in that the design you had does actually resemble a letterbox! 🤓

If your experience is anything like mine, I get lots of ‘suggestions’ which sometimes sound like orders. On thing I find myself saying to you, however, is that if you mount all your boards and terminal strips on your facia it sure is a lot easier to do the wiring. You can then just sit in a comfortable chair and wire away. I started out trying to hide all that stuff, but eventually came to the conclusion it is actually an interesting part of the railway. Charlie, great progress on the freight yard. I really like the idea of the hinged facia board, it makes access so much easier, but I feel for you with the limited space under the track, that is tight. The next series on the Brach station, and surrounds should be very interesting, and I am looking forward to watching progress, and what new tricks and tips you will share.
I am not sure what it is about getting older, but Supper, or dinner, just after 5pm appears to be a thing, I get really cranky if dinner is late, when I was younger, any time was fine.

Another great video Charlie. It's been interesting and very helpful over the last few weeks with laying those slips and three ways. Track laying over the board joins seems novel to me as all the layouts I've come across have the rails cut with the board join. So you've got me thinking as the layout I'm starting will be as permanent as yours, so maybe I won't complicate it with track cut at baseboard joints.

My oldest Brother who has lived in the USA since 1968 sent me over a lot of model railway items including a “KADEE” uncoupler. Not sure if all of the parts are there but will experiment with this as I can see from your experience they have great potential 😇

Great video as usual, the statement that MDF is banned in Canada is incorrect. Though you are correct, that PPE (face masks) need to be worn because it is made of wood flour, not good for the lungs. In Canada they have severely restricted the levels of formaldehyde (used in the resins to bond the wood flower together) emission from the product. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogenic chemical. It is found in small amounts in all woods so it can not be completely eliminated. You should check the specs in your plywood because formaldehyde has been know to be used in the resins used to glue the plys together.
