Best watch I have ever owned, I love everything about it. About the hands, It's a diver and can be read at a glance. Try reading any other watch at the age of 50 without glasses, I bet you cant. The SBDC051 is fantastic.
Hello Dan Burdiek thank you for your comment and contribution. I'm glad that this watch gets all the love from you and others because I also do love this watch no matter how much anyone and myself included complains about the small idiosyncrasies. The hands are a bit of an odd fit but I think that's sort of what makes the watch more endearing and special. I'm accustomed to the hands coming from the two Monster watches I currently own but this watch with its case design takes the handset to a different more dressy look which is in a way a juxtaposition but it's what makes it so cool. Glad to know that the watch is loved by all age groups and 50 isn't that far off for me :D As always, all the best and keep it real. -Martin
A few years ago I bought a sarb 035. I could objectively see the fine details and craftsmanship but I couldn’t bond with it maybe wearing it 4 or 5 times in three years. I tried various straps but it always appeared bulbous and disproportionate. I decided I would sell it especially with the elevated value on the market. Then one day I came across the Uncle Seiko beads of rice bracelet. I pulled the trigger and wow it has become my favourite watch.Breathed new life into a lost cause. Now I’m seeing subtle nuances that previously were imperceptible to me. Strange as it may be this addiction has many faces and layers to explore. Very good video. You have great talent and style.
Hi Darrell, thanks for the share. Super happy for you to have held onto the SARB that is a keeper for sure. I do have regret at not picking it up at the time in the middle 2000s would have loved to get both white and black versions but I spent money on the first gen Cocktail time which I still have but just don't wear very much. Those UncleSeiko beads of rice is also a nice pickup and I have been debating it myself as well. Safe to say looks like we share very similar tastes in watches and bracelets. Thanks for your kind words I am just happy I can give back to the watch community I have been blessed with to have experienced so far. Best wishes and wear your timepieces in good health.
I own this watch and think it's one of the best values out there. The build quality on these is much better than the newer 101. Great bracelet, excellent finish, nuclear lume, and a great movement. I would recommend this watch to anyone.
I bought the SBDC055 which is the PADI version of the 051 in 2019. It was my daily for about three years, and now I wear it from time to time. I’ve had it in the last couple of days and I still think it’s an amazing watch. It makes me feel a bit sad that these watches were loved for a few years, but then dropped for the newer 62mas models. Your video was very enjoyable and it’s great to see someone still loving their older 62mas reimagined.
Hi thetrentmeister, awesome to hear that there's a fellow enthusiast for this series of watches. I still wear mine and everytime I go to pick between SBDC051 and the SBDC101 I always, always always, except a few times go for 051. It has the looks and the ruggedness all in one. Whereas the 101 is well sort of lame really, it's like the difference between a sleek machine vs a functional machine that has no design :P I'm sure the argument can be made for which ever watch being the boring one but for me it's always been SBDC051 looking the best among all the Seiko divers' I own. Bought a SBDC051 several years ago and share your views. An elegant diver with a mesmerising crystal that wears well, let down by the hands selection and bezel action. Still conflicted. Enjoyed the video!

Enjoy that PADI William, I have none at the moment and always look at it with amazement especially the dial work so perhaps one day. Cheers and all the best.
I too love this watch! It's a bit underrated by the watch community and makes me even love it more. Not being a limited edition but it had a short run of being produced of 4-5 years I think, so there's really not too many out there(another plus), compared to the SPB143. Someone here commented that the movement is junk but if you have it regulated it's almost the perfect watch - Dressy and Sporty at the same time. Also to answer your question at the end, I recently bought the SLA057 and I wasn't too impressed with it, but as I wear it everyday it makes me fall in love with the watch and really appreciate that everbrilliant steel, it just shines different.
Hi LiveFit, great to know that someone out there feels the same about this 051! It's a real keeper and as you mention it's almost better that it's not being produced en mass anymore. I haven't regulated as of my watches before and will probably not do so until it actually starts to bother me. The SLA057 looks very nice, wish I could purchase but it's a bit out of my price range. I've only heard good things and haven't seen it in person just yet. It's high on my interest list but not very high on the purchase list. Thanks for your comment and sharing your experience. Cheers and all the best to you.
@@watchluster I understand your reluctance on buying "Higher End Seikos" but they are so worth it in my opinion, although I had to sell a couple of Turtles to help with the purchase. Some say the SLA's are overpriced but no one ever really pays full retail on these, like myself I paid 25% off🙂. It's not till you see this in person to fully appreciate the Japanese mastery! Good Luck and hope someday you get yours! Also, look at SLA043
Out of the box my 053 runs at +20, +25sec per day. I paid $45 to regulate my 053, it was good for 2 months, running at +10, +15 sec per day. After 2 months it's back at +25,+35 per day. I brought it back to my watchmaker and recommended a full service and will cost me $325. Now it's just stays in my drawer most of the time. Will not pay that much for a junk. I agree the design is amazing but the movement is junk
Hi J B, thanks for the share. I've never actually gotten my watches regulated, I've never been one to care about accuracy very much I guess. I remember a time when I did at my very early days when I had an Orient Mako and it was doing 2-3 minutes extra a day and that DID drive me bonkers. Enough that I eventually just gave the watch away to an old roommate at the time. Nowadays I really don't notice so much as I've just been changing watches too often to really notice any inaccuracy and which is why I also don't bother with doing any showcase on accuracy or timegrapher results. Well everyone has their thing and I understand your viewpoint but I suppose it's within manufacturers specs which is -15 to +25 seconds a day. All the best and as always keep it real.
Hi Brett sounds nice, what handset did you get changed to? Someone else mentioned here that someone they know had the handset changed to the GS Diver handset and it looked killer! Cheers.
I gave mine to a kid I saw at work before I left, who always asked me about watches last year. It was his first watch and I like to think he’s kept good care of it. But I doubt it lol
Hi d Shiznit, that's pretty kind of you. Hopefully this kid DID take care of it and is loving it still. What makes you doubt it? Was the kid a bad kid? All points valid. Keep your knife light and your watch heavy! . I love this watch and your review of it. It spends most days longing for my wrist from the dark confines of a dark and thick walled safe. Tactical Frog/Heimdallr/ Thorn (are they all the same company?) ...are making one for about $100. It's likeness now once again being worn as a beater (the shame!) as that $450 I paid for the original (2nd hand) sometime after it was released ....is now worth closer to $2k? Thanks for your words Agilewolf, you hit the nail on the head. The watch is pure luxury in hindsight of how things have turned out in the world. You simply can't find anything like this for the prices it demanded back in the day and funny enough most people thought it was over-priced, over-hyped, or just skipped it altogether as it didn't look 'conventional'. Fortunately for people like us that like things a bit different from the norm, we can really appreciate these quirky styles and as time will tell they will truly become collectibles in the long run. With all things considered, the watch still really captures the sport and the dress and the dive all together in one watch and yes I can criticize the incohesive design but that's what really makes the watch interesting and different than other watches that just does one of those three. All the best from Vancouver, Canada.
That was my very favorite watch review, ever and that's not hyperbole. Seriously, that was art - a laid back yet heart warming story about a guy and his watch with lots of unique story telling character. So, I have to ask you - do you have any experience with the SBDC085 - the so-called "Darth Mas"? It's the exact same watch with a black DLC case, midnight blue fume dial and a greenish yellow outlined minute hand? I own one and it is a sublime owning experience if I may say so. I actually picked it up brand new, from an authorized dealer for $395.00 delivered in the fluke of a watch buying lifetime.
thanks so much the SBDC085 is a limited edition and I have never had any experience with it in hand. Sadly I only have what I have and never got into limited editions across my collecting journey. Sounds like you scored big I wish you the best with the watch and hopefully you are able to pass it down a generation or two :)

Urban Gentry artistic competition. That's a compliment. Uh, Seiko should have an upgraded jubiliee on it. Perhaps go for a Breitling Super Ocean Heritage in the future. New Sub here.
Hi JP, thanks for your compliment. I certainly know of Urban Gentry channel and have viewed his content and even subscribed so yes thank you very much. I wouldn't say I'm a competitor, more of a collaborator or hopefully just a peer one day. I suppose we all do what we do for different reasons but mine is a more selfish reason in that I want to leave a part of myself on the internets for my future generations of kids so they can see me and hear me whenever after I'm long gone. That Breitling looks sweet though it's a bit out of my price range perhaps if I was still single with no kids and pets :) Cheers and all the best to you and thanks for the sub JP. *wave*
Hi David Williams, it's a side effect of trying to do some voice work at night with kids sleeping within earshot. Not so sure if it's a good thing or not but Joe Pera seems like a stand-up chap so I'll take it as a good thing. Cheers and all the best.
Help me choose. I have 7" wrist. I am debating between this and the SPB143. I could get this SBDC051 for 500USD and around 1000USD for the SPB143, which one should I get?
Hi Jev, As you see in the video I do own both and I personally prefer to wear the 051 over the 143 but it's more to do with my past history and experiences with the watch. From a purely aesthetic point of view, I do find 143 a bit more striking to the viewer but with actual use I do enjoy wearing the 051 more. My wrist size is 7.5" and the 051 is just right and possibly a bit bigger than I want hence my initial desire to purchase the 143 but I've never really bonded with the 143. I think I just got caught up with FOMO and social media influencing that eventually led me to purchasing the 143. After I go back to Canada, I'm going to seriously have a look at the mirror and reflect on if I want to keep the 143 but the 051 will stay with me forever. If you haven't thought about it, the MM200 reduced is probably the one I'd go for if I don't own any and had to pick one around the same price range. With no budget though I'd buy the MM300 :) 051 = modern styling 143 = vintage styling MM200/MM300 = the best case design from Seiko ever for their diver's Whatever you decide, I wish the best for you and know that you'll always be able to purchase these watches later on except for the 051 as Seiko doesn't make those anymore from what I know of. As always, keep it real yo. -Martin
@@watchluster Wow, I didn't expect a response so well constructed and thoughtful. I do not own any watches or mid-tier watches besides my trusted Seiko SNXS73. My initial choices were the Seiko 5 GMT's or even a Sea Urchin but I realized that I would instead just save up more and purchase the mid-tier lines.
Yep MM300 would be without budgetary concerns which most of us can't ignore :) Best of luck and hope that you find something nice, if possible do try to visit a store and see the watches in person. That will really help you decide.
@@watchluster Unfortunately, from where I live, I can't really test it out personally since almost all of the 'nice' watches are order basis so here I am, relying on online reviews. I am leaning towards the SPB143 but I am trying to justify the 500USD difference between the SBDC051.
Hi Bujienla, yes they do! It's not bad naked to the eye but when you get up close and tight it's not so well finished however I ask myself am I really looking at it that closely? At most I am looking to check the time and it only takes a half second to do so. I'm willing to forgive some poor edges and roughness on a watch sub $1000 especially if I can't see it without a loupe. It all depends on the user so I won't make any generalizations but in my usage of this watch I've never thought to myself that it should or needs to be finished better. If anything I always felt the watch was a bit of a Frankenstein by Seiko themselves instead of being very original. Cheers and all the best. -Martin
Hi Wayne Yeo, that's a great watch I love the case design on the MarineMaster series of watches from Seiko both the 200 and the 300. I currently own homages to them both as I am trying to see which one I enjoy more. So far I have to admit I actually like the 300 even though it's much bigger but the overall package is something a bit more uncommon in my current watch collection whereas the 200 is sort of starting to become a mix of some of my current watches. Either way it's a great watch and if I had all the money in the world I'd love to own both 200 and 300 but I feel like my next from the two would be the 300 though that being said I'd have to save up a bit longer to buy it :) As always all the best and best wishes to you from Japan. -Martin

You welcome brother.
Thanks again for your great content - very informative. Your content is so unique in that I have re-watched this video like 6 times and every time I learn something new or even gain a deeper understanding of this unicorn 🦄 SBDC051.
Cheers!!!!
Urban Gentry artistic competition. That's a compliment. Uh, Seiko should have an upgraded jubiliee
on it.
That Breitling looks sweet though it's a bit out of my price range perhaps if I was still single with no kids and pets :)
Cheers and all the best to you and thanks for the sub JP. *wave*
Nice video. It's a bit like listening to Joe Pera.😃
Hi David Williams, it's a side effect of trying to do some voice work at night with kids sleeping within earshot. Not so sure if it's a good thing or not but Joe Pera seems like a stand-up chap so I'll take it as a good thing. Cheers and all the best.
Trust me, it’s a compliment. Love Joe Pera.
Help me choose. I have 7" wrist. I am debating between this and the SPB143. I could get this SBDC051 for 500USD and around 1000USD for the SPB143, which one should I get?
Hi Jev,
As you see in the video I do own both and I personally prefer to wear the 051 over the 143 but it's more to do with my past history and experiences with the watch.
With no budget though I'd buy the MM300 :)
051 = modern styling
143 = vintage styling
MM200/MM300 = the best case design from Seiko ever for their diver's
Whatever you decide, I wish the best for you and know that you'll always be able to purchase these watches later on except for the 051 as Seiko doesn't make those anymore from what I know of.
@@watchluster I just checked the prices of this mm300, unfortunately, it is way beyond how much I would spend for a watch for the moment.
Yep MM300 would be without budgetary concerns which most of us can't ignore :)
Best of luck and hope that you find something nice, if possible do try to visit a store and see the watches in person.
I prefer this because of the hour arrow
You are a man of sharp tastes. All the best.
No cure for GAS. Very funny!! Be well.
Hi KIM CHEE WAS A BEE, nice name I love kim chee it's so good with sweet potatoes haha and this combination also causes lots of GAS ^_^
Macros look rough!
-Martin
6r15 is junk
Hi J B, yes I suppose it could be considered as such depending on what you are expecting. What's your reasoning?
As you are too.
Blah blah blah... Trash seiko. Anything below 8l35 is just garbage
wtf this is just a dumb statement. Go hide under the bridge troll and see you never again.
I've the same watch, also known as mm200
Hi Wayne Yeo, that's a great watch I love the case design on the MarineMaster series of watches from Seiko both the 200 and the 300. I currently own homages to them both as I am trying to see which one I enjoy more. So far I have to admit I actually like the 300 even though it's much bigger but the overall package is something a bit more uncommon in my current watch collection whereas the 200 is sort of starting to become a mix of some of my current watches.
Either way it's a great watch and if I had all the money in the world I'd love to own both 200 and 300 but I feel like my next from the two would be the 300 though that being said I'd have to save up a bit longer to buy it :)
As always all the best and best wishes to you from Japan.
-Martin
