Behr vs. Sherwin Williams: which paint is better & is one coat paint worth the price?

  • Behr Marquee and Sherwin Williams Showcase both claim to be one coat paint. But do they give a one coat coverage? And which is the better paint - Behr or Sherwin Williams?
You can find paint supplies on Amazon:
    Wooster Cut in Brushes
    amzn.to/3rr5J43
    Wooster 3/8 inch nap rollers

    Canvas Drop Cloth
    amzn.to/3mJJ5QC
    Painters Tape
    amzn.to/3haLKlh
Once all the necessary paint supplies are in order, we tested the paints. It's clear that in at least a couple of the places, the Sherwin Williams paint went on thinner or painted thinner. The Behr paint seemed to coat better but neither paint covered 100% on the first coat. But in our experience, the Behr Marquee paint did a better job in coverage so that only touch-ups would be required rather than adding an entire second coat of paint to the room.
You can take our word for which paint performed better. Or you can do the same test yourself. We think you will find that the Behr paint was the better paint. Even though Behr Marquee paint cost $5 more than the Sherwin Williams Showcase HGTV paint, it seemed to us that you would use far less of it which would save you money in the long run.

Sherwin Williams Showcase has worked great for me. Actually covered better than the SW Superpaint on 1st coat which was very thin. The Showcase provided 90% color depth on 1st coat. 2nd coat provided true color to sample. Always do 2 coats!

I am a DIYer and prefer to buy Behr Marquee but my experience has been spotty. I have also used Benjamin Moore Ultra and found that to be great coverage however also needing 2 coats. I used a 3/8" nap Purdy roller for both. In my opinion, it really comes down to budget and painting expertise.

This is not a valid comparison video. First of all, Behr Marquee only guarantees one coat coverage if the Marquee colors are used. In this video, he used a Sherwin-Williams color. Second, the Sherwin-Williams paint he uses is the HGTV Sherwin -Williams Showcase brand, from Lowes. It is not their premium product, in fact it is quite a bad product when compared with brands sold at actual Sherwin-Williams stores. Marquee is (or was when this video was made. It is now their Dynasty brand) Behr;s premiere product. To make a comparison of similar products from both brands, he should have used Sherwin-Williams Emerald (sold at Sherwin-Williams stores) and the Behr Marquee in a Marquee color.

White rarely covers in one coat unless it’s already white. The sherwin williams and bher claim one coat coverage when tinted to one of their colors, not one coat coverage with the stock white bases. The bher marquee covers great, probably the best of all the paints ,but it’s not optimized to roll all day like sherwin williams from my experience. The marquee has a lot of friction and drag which is hard on the body when rolling a big house, it does have a nice finish. Thanks for the video!

New to painting (usually just call in one of my subs...) When "touching up" roller work, promptly and with exact same (remaining) paint, is it normally unnoticeable if the touch up is done only locally, or is it generally necessary to repaint an entire surface to end up with a seamless result? Thanks.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael,
In my experience it is generally a seamless look. I will say that is depending on light streaming in from a window. It’s possible that you might be able to see a difference when viewed at a sharp angle.
But I’d go ahead and give the touch up a try first. I’d say that more often then not you’ll be fine.
BTW - use a 3/8 nap roller. Once we accidentally used a1/2 inch roller and it was WAY too much paint on the wall.

I'm not a pro, but have done plenty of painting over the last 30 years. I can recommend Behr, it's a good paint at a good price point. I have always used Behr Ultra, never felt the need to spend more on the Marquee as the ultra had worked great. For trim I like the Behr 3900 over the ultra as it works more like BM advance which is also a good paint that I have used with HVLP on cabinets many times. SW middle of the road was okay, but I just prefer Behr. Paint has personality, you get used to the characteristics of certain brands and then gravitate towards them. I have had success with SW duration, BM regal and Behr Ultra, never felt a reason to spend more on the more luxury lines from any of them. Your milage may vary, but that's what's worked for me.

Marquee is Behrs top premium paint so you should compare to SW top paint which is Emerald. The price is significantly higher but so is the quality. I buy my SW paint when its on sale. Still more expensive by $13 but the coverage is far superior as is the spread. FYI you can buy paint on sale then bring it in later to shake/tint it if your need and the sale don't line up.

I have painted way more walls than I have wanted to but lucky to have used countless brands on these walls. The showcase paint is not bad at all, is it an Emerald equivalent no but a good alternative at lower price point. I am not a fan of Marque at all but even though I read several bad mouth Behr (probably because HD sells it) I think the premium plus is an excellent paint. No need to spend more for Marque I have found ultra or premium plus (I mostly use Ultra) to be easier to apply and has held up very well on every wall I used it on. I don’t care what anyone says but I will never apply one coat to a wall, always needs two plus let’s be honest second coat flies on.

      Hey Chad,
A lot of paints today are “ paint and primer “ in one.
When painting already painted walls, I will generally not prime separately . If it has primer already in the new paint, that’s fine.
On semi-gloss or gloss trim, I WILL prime to make sure the new semi-gloss will adhere to the trim because glossy paints don’t like to be repainted- new paint does stick on it well.

Im hear as I am so disappointed in the SW paint I used yesterday.
Shocked at how shaety Sherwin Williams is right now. Glidden Premier is THICK and can easily be watered down with opaque coverage. Sherman Williams is translucent and can see the tinted primer right through it. Just but taking a stir stick and dipping the paint and letting it drip back in the can, you can see the viscosity build up on the Glidden, but SWilliams just levels out like watery liquid. Also, this was for ceiling flat, and it has a SHEEN!! Their production line is horrible. What in the world happened? So now I got a gallon of Glidden and Behr. Behr is a bit whiter, very slight. So far I think paint is manufactured at less factories than we may think...Does Valspar, who bought Sherwin Williams, or Behr, and Glidden or other brands use different factories?
Also, is latex preferred over acrylic?

Please be warned: Wife and I have years of experience painting and have liked SW in years past but they have clearly cheapened the recipe. It's thinner and doesn't cover well at all. It was a complete waste of money. We deeply regret starting a large project with this garbage paint. We will never buy SW again. This paint is the equivalent of a dollar store guitar. By the way, they also reduced the amount in the can from 128 oz (1 gal) to 124 oz, but still charge $55 per can.

Be careful in your comparisons because just like car companies, paint companies have cheaper and lower quality lines versus their more expensive higher quality lines. Therefore, this test needs a better control.

      Hey diddy,
True. The point of the video was to simply say that our general experience with Sherwin was less than that of Behr.
We did a more “fair” test later…
      th-cam.com/video/sPPDGCQkmXY/w-d-xo.html
… but we found out that in the end- people like “their” brand regardless.
Nonetheless it was an interesting discussion.

Behr paint sucks….I’ve bought the low grade then the middle grade and they both cover terrible… The first time we painted light gray over white (both flat paint) and it covered terrible (light gray should cover white in one coat) Home Depot Behr paint and primer doesn’t cover well at all. So next time I bought the middle grade and got the same results! Come on Home Depot your paint quality is not that good!

People should just get it out of their head "1-Coat Coverage!" It's a marketing gimmick. Sure you could maybe get 1-coat coverage if you sprayed it. But as a retired professional painter, if you want a good paint job, no matter what paint you're using, you need 2 coats, unless your repainting with the same or similar color. Moreover, with 2 coats you have twice the thickness of paint on the wall to endure scratches, scrapes, scrubbing and cleaning.

Behr is garbage , the product Runs and Sags . After painting a room you have to constantly check to brush out runs and roll out sagging paint . Also the finish looks like cheap plastic.
Been painting for 23 years , I've fixed close to a dozen rooms over the years that were covered in runs and sags from homeowners using Behr paint.
Spend the extra $10-$15 and just buy Benjamin Moore Regal Select . Sherwin Williams is also decent but not as good . Sherwin Williams is just more convenient due to having stores everywhere.
