In this video I test which paint covers the best for interior eggshell.
I tested Behr Marquee, Sherwin Williams Emerald, Benjamin Moore Aura, and Sherwin Williams Duration. First I tested 3 different colors all on the same background (light grey). Second I tested painting a yellow color over a red color.
    0:00 - Intro
0:23 - Behr Marquee One Coat Coverage claim
1:09 - the 3 different colors we choose to test
2:07 - Consumer Reports Test Results for these paints
2:47 - Actually applying paint the paint for 1st test
6:02 - The Result to the 1st test
9:51 - The Second painting test (painting over bright backgrounds)
13:12 - The results to the 2nd test
14:59 - Edgars first impression right after applying the paints

    Great video !
As a Painter for 35 years , using all contractor brands, Dunn Edwards, Sherwin Williams, PPG ...... , I am very impressed with Behr, I enjoy using it. Great coverage and flow . There’s always going to be some deep base colors that will be hard to cover, especially in eggshell or satin. You will need to change application methods for this to avoid multiple coats . Either fog coat with a sprayer until covered, or use a medium base similar color in flat as a primer .
Make sure you know your customers colors before pricing, and adjust accordingly .
Paint products are continually improving every year to improve usage and durability which is great 👍

Would you redo this test with colors that are commonly used? Like off whites and light greys over darker colors. How often are people actually painting their interiors with primary colors?

    • @waltsreviews90
      @waltsreviews90  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Hi Brad, Yes I will. I only chose those colors because usually they are the hardest to cover. However, I will be making another video using common colors like white and grey, I also going to use colors that are not part of the Marquee one coat coverage. I had some painter use a couple Marquee one coat colors and they claimed it didn't cover in one coat, so I am going to test those to see if they were correct. I am also going to make a video seeing how each paint does for stuff like cleaning stains and scuffs.

I just finally decided to paint over the original contractor paint(agreeable gray) in my house (7 years old), because we were going to host an Open House to celebrate my daughter’s High School graduation. SW was running a 30% off sale so tried their Emerald on several of my walls and it was truly amazing. The self-leveling for satin finish worked perfectly. Received several comments from guests on how good my walls looked and some were shocked that it wasn’t professionally painted. Emerald is a game changer for DIY-ers! Note: I’ve never tried Behr Marquee so can’t comment on that.

I just watched your video. Nice video by the way. I might have missed it, but what finish or sheens were you using and what was the finish/ sheen that you painted over.In my experience with painting and paints, is that the sheen of the wall to be painted affected the coverage if the new color being applied. For example,I've painted for customers that had a satin or semi-gloss through most of the home, and wanted an eggshell finish.I wanted to prime the semi-gloss first, then apply the eggshell paint, but the customer didn't want to pay for extra primer application and labor and wanted to use a Glidden premium paint and primer instead to save money and it didn't cover after two coats.the customer was disappointed and didn't want to pay for a third coat.So that job didn't go well. They picked the paint, the sheen and assured the glidden premium would cover in one coat, but it didn't.I did a second coat on my time and dollar , but would not do a third coat for free.Sorry for the long story, but I'm not sold on the paint and primer products at all but based on this video, I will be trying the behr marquee. It looks like it's the way to go.

Behr ultra is not rated for 1 coat. Marquee is, so I don't know how you got your money back, but good job on that. On the back of the Emerald can it say 2 coats, it never said 1 coat coverage. I'm a painter for 22 years I've never only done 1 coat unless it is a re-paint of the same color. Even marquee I use 2 coats. It covers about 85% in 1 coat. Everything needs 2 coats when youre on a professional level, and people are paying to have flawless results.

For me it's ok if it takes 2 or 3 coats, as long as colors last well outdoors for mural painting
and don't fade badly over time. I've found that they all do really well, i really like the resiliance from sherwin also,
but the marquee is super colorful and strong, all of them seem really good

    • @waltsreviews90

Unfair test really as far as apples to apples. Unfortunate the SW store used ultradeep base as thats a clear paint with just pigments for hide. Sherwin-Williams in emerald makes a red and yellow base specifically for these colors which is what should have been used.
Also as far as not matching the blue it should have been able to been done in Emerald Designer edition.
I challenge you to go back to a sw store, get sw colors made specifically in yellow and red base, compare them to the competitors matching. For your blue use blue blood or hyper blue and have it made in the Emerald Designer edition, NOT baseline Emerald or Duration.
You might get the same results but it would be interesting to see when other companies have to match SW. Also, use a marathon roller cover.

I use duration everyday and I've never had this issue. It's got great benefits, but the spread isn't as long as it says. It's a self primed thick paint. This is also a textured wall though. Many of the walls I've done are smooth with no texture. Duration Exterior worked wonders for me on Brick. I use a brush to apply the paint to brick. Also is your experiment for 1 coat? 9.7 times outta 10, we're all doing 2 coats. Well at least the painters that take pride in their work and aren't trying to rush to get out. The goal is to provide the best painting and customer service experience. Guys should also care about the services they provide.

It depends on a lot of factors. If they paint underneath isn't adhered properly to the wood, then you'll need to sand it or strip it. Otherwise even if you get a really well bonded coat, it will peel with the undercoat. If it is adhered well, I'd recommend using a primer first. Gray would probably be a decent color to paint over brown with, but you won't know until you try it.

This sounded great,my only question would be is that had you tried two coats of the one coat coverage paints next to the one coat 🤔 Then are they still the same? I'm understanding of that they covered good in 1 coat. But does that bring out the full color, uniformity etc?

    • @waltsreviews90
      @waltsreviews90  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If I'm understanding you correctly, I think it would look the same for the coats that covered in one coat. For the paints that didn't quite cover in one coat, I think that they would look different. It would bring out the full color and uniformity. I guess for this video, I really wanted to test how well the one coat application worked because that's what the paints are advertised as. And as a painting business owner, its great to test products before I use them for clients.

I totally understand and agree with the tests you did an how you wanted to show the one coat coverage, which I think you did a great job. Clearly was consice an to the point demonstrating these paints and their claims! I also own a painting company an right now on my job the home owner first attempted his project himself buying the very expensive Aura paint.. obviously because his thoughts were sold on by the paint store selling him on it would be less work with the one coat.. now I always price my jobs on premium paints but honestly the price point on costs are half the cost of the Aura . I've used the Behr for my personal home and I honestly was surprised how much I liked it.. I told the home owner that In my opinion , Behr Marque would do his job with the same quality as the Aura because wether I used Aura , Behr or any other Benjamin Moore paints my plan was always to do the 2 coats, then the sanding Inbetween , last apply my second coat. I've never used the Aura paint but I've used all other lines of Benjamin Moore an other equals! I've always done the 2 coats because I've always been under the impression to get complete coverage an uniformity , you need to do 2 coats! In the past I've cut in and rolled out walls wet on wet and gotten away with one coat, but almost always have had to do the 2. The surprise I got was after my bid then the signing of contract the surprise of could I use this Aura paint because he's already bought 5 gallons , wall paint. Now always wanting to be at the forefront in business, if there's a paint that I can only do one coat and it honestly is an equal to the two coats , I'm wanting to be there! Less work more profit an quicker turnovers! I guess my real thoughts would be if I do this one coat, then later down the road , homeowner does a touch up! Will this flash ? I've always known that after 2 coats when touch ups are applied it's fine! So my question asked about if the one coat paint brought out the full uniformity as the 2 coats because of this thought! Now I've no problems using what ever quality paints the home owner wants as long as my job doesn't get harder! But obviously if it can get easier I'd use the Aura as long as it fits in with what I've said! My price would reflect the higher paint cost. With Aura at the price it is ! My thoughts of already liking the behr if I could do the jobs cutting out a whole step ! Getting (2 coat) coverage by only doing one, I'll do this for the Owner as long as my prices have reflected the different paint costs$$$

The roller always has good coverage. The proof would be in the cut in, and that is the part that takes the longest. The behr is the worst for cut in and painting. It is too thick and sticky for me and does not flow off a brush like Duration or regal products that are thinner but have a lot of pigment. Putting on 2 coats gives the best finish in any paint. If I need to go over a red with a beige I just prime and then use super paint paint/primer over that it will need 2 cut in coats of any paint you chose. The only time you do not need 2 cut in coats is if painting similar or same color over the wall.

    • @waltsreviews90

I agree two coats is a good idea no matter what paint or coverage you get. We have had mixed results with the other Behr lines like the ultra and premium and the pro series, and in many cases we didn't get coverage full coverage with 2 coats. Thats why the Marquee surprised me. I did another video about coverage and cutting in on my other channel here is a link to it th-cam.com/video/eF1C_jUBUO8/w-d-xo.html I think for a DYI homeowner since they don't paint everyday everything is going to be hard for them, and only doing 2 coats instead of 3 coats ( like your 1 prime and 2 coats paint example) might be easier and save them time. I also made another video where I tested 1 vs 2 coats for cleaniblility and was shocked. th-cam.com/video/cRrlFmsWBAE/w-d-xo.html. Duration, Emerald, Cashmere, Super Paint, even the Pro Mar lines all great paints, and if they help you with application then for you they are the best choice, I mainly wanted to test and see if the 1 coat coverage was true. I am curious when you talk about cutting in with Behr, were you talking about Marquee or one of the other Behr lines?

Depends a lot on the situation. The paints will say on the back if they require a primer or not. Behr Marquee has the most amount of titanium dioxide than any paint in existence. They're not stingy on their titanium dioxide. It's the most expensive part of the paint! Its what makes the paint cover so well. This paint though is not good for a paint sprayer because you will more frequently have to get your sprayer repaired!

If you want coverage from emerald it must be exterior. Emerald interior is not for coverage but durability. Emerald exterior gages at 3 coats thick and is durable because it’s exterior. Sheens
Are limited because it’s exterior but it is what I use when satan sheen is called for. Another note it isn’t as thick as the marquee so emerald exterior is a much more friendly when working with the roller.

I was impressed with the marquee from this video but I’m not sure this is a genuine test. I say that because you specifically used marquee colors over marquee colors, so it’s not surprising that it performed the way it did. I wonder if the coverage of marquee would really be comparable to the Aura when using marquee over a non marquee color. Overall, definitely better than I expected with Behr.

SW will have more durability over Benjamin moore advanced but BM advanced has a better finish. In the end, if it’s going on wood.... to many factors in prep to full determine which is better. Stick with better paints instead of SW and BM. If it’s interior walls... behr will be most bang for your buck
