you and Over The Top/ Holy Grail have changed my game immensely! I'm only 24 but went from shooting 100-110 to low 90s consistently in a little over 3 months of practice. I can't thank you enough besides by subscribing
Adam "Nuck" here. Who'd a thought I make a change yesterday and hit my irons better than I have in a long time. Then I go out and try and find someone speaking to what I adjusted to yesterday and I get your video here on "making mistakes on the front side of the ball"!!!! My biggest mistake I have always had and even when I worked with you, was getting to the front side of the ball and now that I hear you say it, it reinforces where I was going wrong and the adjustment I made. I started by stacking on my left leg if you will with my left foot pointed slightly out. I immediately started hitting more crisp strikes on the ball. Also used it on 2 holes on the back 9 and flighting those 2 balls from 85 and 105 yards lower with much better shots than normal. I just love the way you summarized "making mistakes on the front side of the ball" ... MAKES SO MUCH SENSE Thanks Adam!!!
20 years + I’ve been playing Adam, you’re absolutely spot on, all my mistakes are in front of the ball (pre impact) until now that is! I’ve been at DR for three sessions 180 balls in total and this video has transformed my iron striking. Thank you Adam, Florida a little to far for me to travel so videos are a godsend 😊
This is truly the key to good iron play. Probably the best video out there on the importance of getting to your front side before the strike. "Make it playful." Great job here Adam!
I just want to say thanks for all of the great content you put out, as a new player the explanation and the video quality just makes it 10x easier to learn
Love the comment on taking a risk and playing golf relative to getting the ball in the hole, not just making contact with the ball. It is such a simple thing, but a needed mindset shift for me!
6:30 "just a playful intention"...the best non-swing thought swing thought ever! Kinda like a great ball Canadian striker that was known to whistle and sing while he played. Thanks for your great content Adam!
Likewise Adam, loved that comment and the video was very very helpful, as was your one on hitting inside to out. I’m a leftie who is enjoying playing and continuing to improve. Thanks. Michael

Been struggling with this swing problem for a while now, I incorporated your advice into my game today and hit pure shots for the first time in ages, it's also straightened up my hook a bit too, thank you
I’ve played enough golf to know you worry about the target and not hitting behind the ball. My problem is not doing so consistently so I better stay tuned? Lol
Adam - Magnificent comment about not having made mistakes on the forward side of the ball. That REALLY resonated with me. My local pro, in our first lesson recently, now has me learning impact on THAT side of the ball. A little bit of learning lag, couple of set up tweaks. Your lag video, as simple as you instructed, now has me progressing with purpose. Thank you sir!

I suffered from this a lot. One visual thought that really helped me was to pretend each shot was on a downward slope of the course. This got my weight more onto my left side and swinging the club down the "slope" towards the target.

Hi Adam, I've been following you're lessons for a couple to three months now and I've seen positive results. I've been golfing since I was in my twenty's and now in my late 50's. I like the professional video examples as well. Thanks for the help on improving my game.
Did not try to hit ball today on range. I put the best swing to target on ball with lateral shift and divot after ball was awesome. I put towel 4 inches behind the ball and avoided hitting towel with ball first, divot second which was a great drill. And have fun learning and don't get upset per Adam. Thank You.

Thanks for this advice. I can particularly relate to the tip to focus on the target not the ball. I've had so many friends say to focus on a spot on the ball and because of that my swing has been stiff and rigid. I'm sure a free swing is going to help me.
I just love what you had to say because I have a mental fear or block about holding my club long enough in the leaning position and trusting my follow through. It’s like I’m afraid that I won’t hit the ball and I wind up rushing my swing and the club winds up standing up at ball contact. I needed to hear you talk about those little details.
Really great video! It is really hard for most of us not to worry about"screwing up". But you are so on target about taking chances, relax and play around. I have been taking some lessons here in Atlanta and my teacher was working to keep left wrist leading a fraction longer through impact. I hit some really bad misses initially but when I got it right it made a Big difference in direction and distance. I am still working on it and working on my weight shift. So, this video really helps. Thanks Adam.
Thanks Adam! Do you have a video on pre-round warm-up? I was in hurry on Tuesday and didn't hit balls before the round or take some putts. It took me almost four holes before I started feeling like I was warming up. Thanks again!
Adam, this week on the range I got myself into a very bad habit of hitting behind the ball off the mat. Not only was my contact piss poor but my wrist was sore as can be after hit a medium bucket. I was totally despondent after my range session. Shots were everywhere. I started looking on TH-cam for solutions and came across your series of videos. Instantly noticed what I was doing wrong, swaying too much back in the back-swing and not sliding forward in the downswing. Played a round two days later fearing I would repeat my range session fiasco but kept your swing tips in mind. Hit decent iron shots after a few thin shots and not sliding forward. Reminded myself of the tips. By the ninth hole I was back to hitting solid, piercing iron shots.....great videos. I've already subscribed and look forward to watching and more importantly learning and improving....great videos !!!
Thanks Adam, very helpful information. My wife & I are hoping to get down to Naples again this summer later and have you spend some more time with us. Dawn still watches your video that you did for her just before we go out and play for a refresher. Thanks for your great instruction.
Adam, I really enjoy your nonsensical approach and teaching. The concept of being free and experimenting with different feels allows one to find that "groove" for each of us as individuals. Excellent videos and instruction. Thank you.
Fantastic video! I took up golf last year at age 62 and it's been a struggle but great fun. I suffer from this problem, but never really thought much about the mental aspect involved in striking the ball. I'm going out today to both the range and to play, so I'll give these tips a try. My initial thought was to achieve solid contact consistently first, then worry about direction, and lastly distance. Is this the way to approach it? I'm still stuck at number one! Bob
You just don’t know how much this one video will help me! I’ve bee playing golf for 25 years and have struggled so often out of fear to not make good ball contact. It only takes a millisecond to screw up the whole shot sequence. I haven’t been willing to make mistakes on the left side of the ball and it has cost me more bad shots than I can count. I noticed that your club was still leaning at approximately 30 degrees to the right before you struck the ball. I usually panic and rush my downswing as well as break my wrists at 90 degrees simultaneously trying to hit the ball. Shifting my weight to my left side as well as having that 30 degree lag before and after I strike the ball has always alluded me. I’ve had people tell me I have a beautiful swing but, they don’t realize the fear I have at that last little millisecond before ball contact. I’ve been reluctant to practice your method and possibly have mistakes made on the left side of my swing. Funny thing is I have surprised myself with some really beautiful shots before not realizing what I had done to make it happen! I have purchased your video set before but, it’s not going to do me any good unless I take chances of making mistakes trying to correct my swing. I’ve always been a believer of good mechanics with my golf swing and some people would criticize me in fun saying, “ I ain’t no pro , just go ahead and hit the ball!” Criticize or not, over the years I have emulated the way that the pros strike the ball and have enjoyed playing the game. Thanks again for this video!
“Fear of missing the ball”....You aren’t making this up, it’s my #1 problem. This is why I could make perfect divots with no ball on the ground, literally 8 out of 10 times with ease, then the ball goes on the ground and I’m behind it. These are great drills and strategies
Other than Shawn Clement, one of the only pros I've ever seen put focus on the fact the ball is not the target. So many pros never address this issue. They diagnose an inside takeway, an over-the-top swing, etc. All correct, but all just symptoms. The reason for those problems is more often than not: having the ball as your target. Well done!
Addicted to your videos. I'm a right hand golfer unfortunately with a strong right arm, over the top has been a nightmare for me. I've adjusted my play to that and haven't hit below 80. These videos truly help out! Thank you!
Brand new to golf, went to a driving range the other day and in the beginning I was worried about not hitting the ball. I would miss behind and the readjust and miss over the top. After a while I let loose a little bit and didn't think of hitting the ball and it helped so much. I was making solid contact. Then by my second lot of balls I was aiming for targets and getting close. This video is great. Wish I seen it before I went.
I notice the pros video clips hands were over the front foot when contact with ball. I tried some swings and to get my hands over my front foot, my hinge was different which caused my trail elbow to be much closer to my body, brushing it now. And I started having divots for the first time ever. Great video and many thanks.
Easy to understand teacher. Hit my first (that I can remember) solid golf on the range today. Was hitting 100m 7 irons from a half swing. To bring this into context I am struggling to hit a 7 iron 120m from full swing at moment. Watching Adam has me understanding what I thought as complex concepts into easy concepts. Learnt to compress the ball, move the contact from back of ball to front of ball. Just need to improve my swing path now, confidence is critical. Thanks Adam.
I find Adam Bazalgette’s “Scratch Golf Academy” one of the more relatable golf instruction videos. The struggles I have seen with my swing Adam has identified in many of his videos.
I think all of us OLDER golfers were taught to stay still and NOT slide forward over the ball, so we hit behind the ball. I am in agreement with something said that the golfing teachers wanted you coming back for more lessons. They NEVER said to slid forward and think of the target and NOT the ball. I was told to keep my eyes on the ball because that's what I was trying to hit. I might say EVERYTHING you teach is VERY different then any of the rest yet today. THANK YOU for changing everything for me.
Thanks Nicholas. If you care to go to www.adambgolf.com you can reach out. I do quite a few mini schools on the road, hopefully you could participate. Best, Adam
This is going to be my season to break 100 consistently, and my goal is to crack into the 80s. When I do, I'm going to give you (and my persistence) the credit. Your lessons are broken down very effectively. You take nothing for granted; and your statement (in the straight driver video) that "it's a game of the stick and a ball" was like a light turning on! Right! It's actually quite simple, as simple as you'll let it be. I brought this revelation into my practice by just swinging through a teed up ball meaning to merely hit it straight if only 50 or so yards. You know what happened. I was hitting 125, 150 without even trying. A stick and a ball. Thanks!
Learned so much from your videos and actually made my hitting a little bit better. also had my 6 yr old watch your videos and also made him a better and accurate hitter. every tournament hes done hes improved! thanks sir! 👌👌
Have been watching your output for a while and it really is one the best instruction channels and I think you've only just started to 'scratch' the surface in helping us to improve our game. Many thanx! 🤔🏌💥⛳🏆
Fantastic instruction, it’s very refreshing to see someone who appreciates how much of a mental game golf is. I really like how you often attempt to take the pressure off of the golfer and focus more on basic fundamentals to improve. I highly recommend your videos to others, especially to those who are like me, newer to golf. Top notch instruction, no doubt.
Very helpful tip for a golfer fighting a bad back that has created some bad habits that have caused this issue to rear its ugly head making the back issue even worse. Looking forward to more. Thanks, JC
This has been the most helpful video I've watched so far even though the other videos say the same thing: "try to get your weight in front of the ball". Such good explanation. Top marks
Adam...your impact bag drill helped me immensely..I was always sliding with my hips...once I used the impact bag and left my head steady over my back leg I could really release the clubhead at impact with a flat back left hand..it helped me hold my release...what a difference in my ball striking...thank you so much best Rocco
I really appreciate your teaching style and how you have reduced the parameters to a basic 2. I don't frequently get a chance to get to the range so when I do, having to remember too many factors or adjustments is overwhelming. Definitely going to use this video to help with my iron strikes. Really appreciate this lesson...golf can be unbelievably frustrating when you can't get to it enough and practice...
I am glad that I am watching your videos now, which are very helpful and simple. I am trying to become Golf teacher, so I am learning a lot from it. Thank you and TH-cam for all the tools and techniques.
I can tell why you're well known in Florida for being a great instructor, you make creative points that combine the mental game and technique...I could listen to you for 18 holes and learn everything I need to know.
I like this video. The idea of emphasizing freedom in the swing by focusing on the target instead of the ball is something I've talked about but have very rarely implemented in either my practice or play.
I just recently fixed the worst slice I’ve ever seen anyone have (Me) from the most minor adjustment and now they’re straight hitting about 240. Been playing like 2 times a year for 8 years but this past year I got some friends into it finally now it’s twice a week. We are all learning and hitting mid 90s but these videos are the best.
The suggestion about letting go of outcome and emphasizing freedom (playfulness) in the learning process is excellent. He’s focusing on process factors and as he might say proximal variables that are on a manageable scale. So many golf instructors are difficult to listen to. This one is just right. He’s got a concept in mind (analysis of swing things there go wrong) and a go to remedy (simple drill or two). Thanks.
This problem hitting behind the ball has been driving me crazy for the past two months. This is a video certainly help me understand what I was doing wrong! Thank you Thank you Thank you
Glad it's helpful to you Tim! If you have an interest check out www.scratchgolfacademy.com I have full video courses there in more of a building block format. All the best, Adam
great video took it to the course had a play and found myself getting great contact and hitting the ball to the target....and relaxed ive never been so relaxed ....
This is one of the best videos on golf instruction I have ever seen! Fear is definitely an issue for me! Which results in semi decent contact but very erratic distance and direction. Deep divots also tell me I'm over the top just trying to hit this tiny little ball!
Played poorly yesterday, directionally speaking, then last hole remembered this lesson. Forgot about the ball, and just concentrated on moving my CG towards the target with my lower half. So PAR'd the hole, GIR, three great shots into the green on a par 5. You were right, it creeps back in on us. Thank you Adam!
Thanks for the tip I'm going to try next time I get out there I've even hit a foot behind the ball I'm not sure if I'm losing sight of it I don't have much Bend but that could be my problem great stuff
Adam, I have been playing this silly game for the better part of 50 years. Yes, you have hit the nail on the head. I have a lot of work to do and I have to come back to this one every day and listen to this over and over to get my mind to free up. I have taken the drop 5 strokes and this will do more for me then that course.
Love the idea about trying to make a mistake on the other side of the ball. This is a great thought and action to correct the original mistake. Thank you
This is great advice. You need to be visualizing that your swinging through the ball. Great points about shifting weight toward the target before contact.
Hi Adam. You are by far the best and most consistent instructor on TH-cam. You've helped me go from a 10 to a 5 handicap with your drills. One question I can't find a consistent answer to is how to position the ball when using clubs with offset. My Cleveland TA7 irons have a progressive offset and I tend to be inconsistent as the offset gets larger (4-5 iron tend to hit fat). Should I be moving the ball further up or back with offset. Other videos and forums have mixed messages. I hit other irons well (including all my woods) maybe I need to go to no offset clubs? Stay safe.
Thanks for the comment. A little offset shouldn't make that much difference. That said, if it's hurting your game, you are likely too good a player to need them. I hope this helps. All the best, Adam
Some great advice here. I find myself topping the ball more lately, which I consider great to see since it means I am also chunking less and getting many more crisp iron shots - primarily by keeping my weight forward. As mentioned in the video if you are always chunking you are not learning, not changing anything. Similarly you should not always be coming short into greens. You should be coming in long sometimes otherwise you are not choosing your clubs correctly.
I enjoyed that you said to not be afraid of making a mistake(poor contact) and free yourself up to enjoy the process. I have always been fixated to the outcome and not always enjoying the process. Thanks Adam
Amazing video, this video alone has seen me go from a frustrated 13 handicapper to a solid 8 literally overnight just by making the target the target, thank you very much :)
brilliant video, easy to understand as your videos always are. Thanks for this game changer for me. In trying to keep my head back I always stayed back too which meant often hitting behind the ball. This has helped me tremendously.
Thank You Adam for my first lesson from you, You have freely shared your knowledge and I really appreciate it, I am 64 with major back problems but I am out once a week enjoying golfing with my buds I will continue watching and practicing your instruction now if you have any thoughts on swinging with a bum bender I will look for it Fore!! My initial thought was to achieve solid contact consistently first, then worry about direction, and lastly distance. Is this the way to approach it? I'm still stuck at number one!
Bob
Bob,
Thanks for the comments. I hope you get a breakthrough the next few weeks!

Thanks Jerry, hope you make good progress!

Thanks for posting these videos. In my opinion, no one else explains the golf swing as clearly and simply as you do.
Thanks very much Roberto.

“Fear of missing the ball”....You aren’t making this up, it’s my #1 problem. This is why I could make perfect divots with no ball on the ground, literally 8 out of 10 times with ease, then the ball goes on the ground and I’m behind it. These are great drills and strategies
Hope you make good progress Johnny.

Well done!
Thanks very much.

Really good tips,
Thanks Mark!

Sorry, meant "Thanks David"
Close enough :)
Great tip, I'm playing tomorrow and I'll be focusing on the target as opposed to hitting the ball
Hope it goes well for you Willie
Great, remember the target and not just the ball.
Thanks Paul, it's magic when we can do it.

Addicted to your videos. I'm a right hand golfer unfortunately with a strong right arm, over the top has been a nightmare for me. I've adjusted my play to that and haven't hit below 80. These videos truly help out! Thank you!
Thanks Gregory, glad you are making progress with your game.

Thanks Joel, glad you are making progress.

I notice the pros video clips hands were over the front foot when contact with ball. I tried some swings and to get my hands over my front foot, my hinge was different which caused my trail elbow to be much closer to my body, brushing it now. And I started having divots for the first time ever. Great video and many thanks.
Glad to hear you made good progress.

Thanks for the comment Brett. Glad you are seeing progress.

I find Adam Bazalgette’s “Scratch Golf Academy” one of the more relatable golf instruction videos. The struggles I have seen with my swing Adam has identified in many of his videos.

Well said.
I listened, and now I need to apply it. Thank you, Tommy
Hope you have good success Tommy
your content is the easiest to comprehend and apply. love the concept of shorter swings to begin with for any drill!
Thanks, I'm glad it's been helpful for you.

Delmar,
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you find the videos helpful.

Very glad to hear that.

Thanks again Adam. This video of yours has been a standard go to of mine for a very long time.
ps. At address, do you recommend hovering the iron in the swing path close behind the ball with a straight arm drop?
Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. Very glad you've seen such progress in your game.

Thanks very much Mason!

Top marks
Thanks very much Erksine.

I like the attitude of being playful and open to making mistakes in the direction of what you want to end up doing. Very helpful
Thanks, hope you make good progress.

Adam...your impact bag drill helped me immensely..I was always sliding with my hips...once I used the impact bag and left my head steady over my back leg I could really release the clubhead at impact with a flat back left hand..it helped me hold my release...what a difference in my ball striking...thank you so much best Rocco
I always learn something from Adam's videos. I struggle with iron shots and this sounds like exactly what I need to practice.
Thanks Scott, glad you like the videos.
All the best, Adam
I really appreciate your teaching style and how you have reduced the parameters to a basic 2. I don't frequently get a chance to get to the range so when I do, having to remember too many factors or adjustments is overwhelming. Definitely going to use this video to help with my iron strikes. Really appreciate this lesson...golf can be unbelievably frustrating when you can't get to it enough and practice...
Thanks for the comment, and glad you liked the video.

I like this video. The idea of emphasizing freedom in the swing by focusing on the target instead of the ball is something I've talked about but have very rarely implemented in either my practice or play.
Thanks for the comment Jerold.

Thanks, and glad to hear of your progress.

Thanks.
Thanks very much Howard.

This is one of the best videos on golf instruction I have ever seen! Fear is definitely an issue for me! Which results in semi decent contact but very erratic distance and direction. Deep divots also tell me I'm over the top just trying to hit this tiny little ball!
Thanks fore the comment, glad you found the video helpful.

Thanks, Adam. Really useful! Hi from New Zealand!
Thanks Andy, glad you liked the video.

Loved the overall approach to the learning process
Thanks very much!
It creeps back on me too!

Thanks for the tip I'm going to try next time I get out there I've even hit a foot behind the ball I'm not sure if I'm losing sight of it I don't have much Bend but that could be my problem great stuff
Thanks Tony, hope you make good progress.

Adam, I have been playing this silly game for the better part of 50 years. Yes, you have hit the nail on the head. I have a lot of work to do and I have to come back to this one every day and listen to this over and over to get my mind to free up. I have taken the drop 5 strokes and this will do more for me then that course.
Delmar,
I'm glad you found the video helpful. Best of luck with your progress.

Love the idea about trying to make a mistake on the other side of the ball. This is a great thought and action to correct the original mistake. Thank you

Thanks, I hope you have some success with it.

This is great advice. You need to be visualizing that your swinging through the ball. Great points about shifting weight toward the target before contact.
Thanks, and glad you liked the video.

Hope you keep making progress Michael.
Best, Adam
I enjoyed that you said to not be afraid of making a mistake(poor contact) and free yourself up to enjoy the process. I have always been fixated to the outcome and not always enjoying the process. Thanks Adam
Thanks Richard, I wish I'd been told this as a younger player.
