  • ‘Radar Love’ - Golden Earring. There’s a wealth of drumming ideas on this classic rock epic!
    DRUMMER: Cesar Zuiderwijk.
In 1973 Dutch rockers Golden Earring penned what is widely regarded as the ultimate driving song. At over six minutes long ‘Radar Love’ carries the listener through several distinctive moods during its uptempo journey with no crunch of gears but it actually begins with several hits that are played at a much slower tempo (117bpm). With these out of the way, drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk introduces the classic swung ‘train beat’ on the snare at a new faster tempo of 199bpm. This pattern runs through both the first and second verses, though each with slightly different bass drum patterns. The bridge then moves to a more conventional kick/snare/hats feel before heading over to the ride cymbal for the chorus........

    Awesome,thank you for your expertise.
I always had a lot of respect for left handed drummers and the fact that you're playing traditional style is
    amazing.

Hello Cesar and thanks. I'm a 65 years young Drummer. This tune gave me fits as a 16 year old aspiring drummer trying to copy, your video gave me better insight on playing this "many rhythms in one arrangement", Love you Cesar, gotta go practice this new info, Peace!!!

Great lesson but just one little note.😊 Although you can play the main groove like a swung train beat. The original groove is actually played with a right hand shuffle where the left hand plays the accent in 3 alternated with accents in 3 and 3e. Cezar showed it to me and other guests during a workshop i was at music station😊

Refreshed my listening and playing of this song with these well-presented key points.
Totally unfazed by the left-handed playing as it still flows brilliantly, and, as it’s not open-handed style, regardless of grip. Many thanks.

Cesar Zuiderwijk actually plays (and recorded) this groove as a normal shuffle played on his snare.

That would be too fast for me to manage. I would use jazz swing rhythm.

Many times covered, especially here in Holland, but seldom the drum parts are played right. When you see Caesar playing it, you don’t get straight away how difficult it is. Live he plays variations on his own recording. Just bumped into a band who has Radar Love on their setlist. Your vid is gonna be a great help for sorting this out. Thanks!

Very nice breakdown - and build-back-up. I'm left handed but at my first drum set lesson (60 years ago 😱) my instructor asked which way I wanted to play and I chose to learn to play and set up my set as a right handed player. Looks like we both did ok! 😁
    Nice q work. Thank you.

It’s all right hand and only left on the backbeat.
Not a train beat. Check out any old footage like Midnight Special. In fact even the drummer’s new Roland drum video showcase displays this.
This is not an easy song to play like the original.

Always thought there was some single slap back delay on the drum track especially at the solo.

If you look at the oficial Radar Love video of the Golden Earring, you can see that Cesar does not play the way you play the first part. He plays a kind of shuffle on the snare, with a double stroke right hand and a single stroke left hand.

  • @s4lroachclip

It is interesting that the "train" beat, is really not a shuffle after all. Rather, its actually 8th notes. But the Bass drum in part feels triplets, while the snare is doing 8ths. (Or is that bass drum dbl a 16th?)That there is what made this song so confusing. It goes on to maintain the triplet illusion through the whole song because of the bass drum and many of the fills. The part with 2 bars of 1/4 flams flams comes off as if it 1/4 triplets... Hey will you do a video on the solo?

  • @timsabepieczynski7051

Hes actually doing a shuffle on the snare. Look it up on live footage. Good job tho.

I thought this video was mirrored, but I can see by the logos on the heads and cymbals your kit is set up opposite of the typical configuration. Never seen that before.

Superb. Thx a lot! To be honest, I still get stuck on the RLL... break at 3:10. Would you share the complete sticking? Is ist R(LL)R(L)R(LRL)? And I'm sure I hear you playing sth. even more complicated in the fast part, or is this just dynamics? Sounds awesome.
