Hey guys, thank you so much for this year. It's meant a lot to me, because in the face of all the badness of 2020, you guys made this channel grow. See you next year!
Wind Waker is all about the villagers trying to recreate the Hero. The children wearing the tunic when they come of age is a great example of this. It makes perfect sense that the master sword would also be created.
They're trying to create a hero without knowing that the title is determined by birth. Link doesn't have to know he's going to be the hero to be destined .
I always thought that the reason the Master Sword didn't appear in the temple of time dungeon (past section) in TP was because the moment you travelled to was while the hero of time was off doing stuff in OoT and you just sorta slipped in and did the (never finalized) light temple for him, since there was always supposed to be a light temple in OoT but was scrapped due to time constraints which is why Raru just hands you his medallion when you wake up.
To quote Ganondorf: "If I had a nickel for every time someone used a different Master Sword on me I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.
@@4EverTrashProduction Yep watching this video actually added to the confidence I already had towards this theory. I could really go on for hours on why I think this is fact.
Not the original chosen, but a new one. He doesn't contain the blood of the hero, thanks to Zelda. But the Goddesses made due with the Hero of Winds. Why do you think the Tower of the Gods was created? To help forge a new chosen hero. Similarly to the three pendants from Link to the Past, the Pearls were a way to create a new Chosen Hero. A way to guide the new Link to the Master Sword. A way to forge a new hero within the sacred flames of Courage, Wisdom, and Power... just like it was done in the beginning.
i always assumed little continuity issues like how the master sword is depicted were just kinda in line with art style differences, because typically in the more realistic looking games they keep the master sword looking the same and usually when its depicted as looking different it happens to appear in a very cartoony game like link between worlds or windwaker
Same here. Even though I usually pay attention to details, theorists are on a whole other level in terms of observation and understanding of subtext. (Starting a chain)
This is why I love theorists so much, so many what ifs in games and they just come up with bombtastic theories that seem plausible with the evidence they’ve researched even though it’s “just a theory.”
We see a new master sword type sword made in Phantom Hourglass. Link finds sacred metals, a blacksmith makes the blade and the Ocean king forms it into the Phantom Sword. So it isn't that crazy to say that the sages made one too.
There was a phantom sword before Link's forged phantom sword indeed, it was however lost to time, not broken, (maybe they were referring to the master sword and the phantom sword was what it was dubbed by the ocean King's world). Hi, I'm a phantom hourglass player, ask me anything.
It makes sense since the rest of the timeline has other legendary blades that take the sword's place, both in a game play and lore way, the mortals needed a new sword of evil's bane, so imitations were made.
This is actually one thing I've noticed that isn't talked about much. The "adult" timeline is actually the original timeline, the one that Link first woke up in and started his adventure in. The child timeline was a deviation from fate. EDIT: another thought for you all to dance with: the timeline split doesn't actually happen when Link pulls the sword, it happens when Zelda sends him back at the end of the game. That's the moment the child timeline starts.
@@StealthRose1992 Well, from a publishing standpoint, yeah. From the "finalized", "Official" timeline standpoint... maybe? It is like Bandit said: The Fallen Timeline doesn't play by the same rules as the Adult and Child Timelines. It is a Schrodinger's Cat paradox where you can hear meowing from the box *BEFORE* anyone actually put a cat in there. The Downfall Timeline exists alongside the "Split" timeline, yet seemingly unconnected. It just appeared "fully formed" with no starting point.
@@Starcat5 I believe at the end of the fallen timeline, after you wake up Zelda, she is remorseful for of all the destruction caused by Ganondorf to Hyrule and makes a wish on the complete Triforce to undo his destruction. This could be why link awakens the sages in the adult time-line. It gave him the extra edge to defeat Ganondorf. This would explain why the sage decendants are all Hylian in the downfall time-line. Link didn't awaken the new sages, so the sages of his Era would have been the ones we saw in twilight princess. Spirit sages from when the temple of time was built.
One thing that helps support this - the "true" Master Sword doesn't revert to its pre-awakened state even when it's lost is power. In Breath of the Wild, it's weakened to the point of rusting, but it's still clearly the Master Sword. As the one in Wind Waker is not in the form of the Master Sword until after the sages empower it, it's safe to say that it wasn't truly completed until that point (similar to how the "true" Master Sword didn't take that ship until it was truly completed in Skyward Sword).
Yeah and strange Zelda could awaken the master sword in skyward sword but in wind waker they had Zelda, but still needed the sages to do it like the sword was just built with a different power source in mind
There's also the question of Lorule's Master Sword, which *might* be Ghirahim/Demise's Sword due to his sword looking like a copy of the Master Sword, but with an upside-down Triforce icon (which matches Lorule's upside-down Triforce).
I've always wondered about Lorule. From a lore perspective, it really should be where Demise and the Demon Tribe originate. But it just hasn't appeared enough and had a small enough bearing on the franchise that it never really got fleshed out as much as it deserves. I honestly kinda want the next zelda game to be an open world game in the style of BOTW but with the wall merging and lorule mechanics
thats the same thing I was thinking Ghirahim as a sword has a lorule triforce on him & is black just like how the triforce is depicted during the game as it was destroyed & Demise's hatred could originate from the gods leaving their world to die, also in skyward sword during the beginning scene it was stated that Demise & the other demons came from a fissure in the earth which could be paralleled to the fissures in a link between worlds around hyrule & the giant stone tablet in Lorule
@@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868 yh i wish there were more games with Lorule involved either before Lorule's fall or after we saved it & we either accidentally end up there and want to escape or try to save it from another threat either as link or ravio
Tbh, your theory makes a lot of sense. Ganondorf won't say what he said out of nowhere, it's a really good importante quote for the lore, I never payed attention for that in the past. Thanks for that!
The only issue with that is TP states that the Master Sword was created by the ancient sages. It looks like the Master Sword being forged by Link was retconned in with SS.
@@Deni_Denise All of the timelines are real. They all happen. Also, the Hero of Time gets sent back in time and keeps the Triforce of Courage, yet in the Wind Waker it was fractured into eight pieces. I just think that the time travel shenanigans may account for why the Master Sword is in both timelines.
YES! YES! YES! This is exactly what I've always thought ever since reading Hyrule Encyclopedia! There's a part where it says a Master Sword can be created when a "white sword is imbued with higher power". I believe we actually see it happen in the Oracle games. Even the master sword, as depicted in Skyward Sword, took the form of the Goddesses White Sword first. And if we go by this lore, even the Four Sword counts as a Master Sword (which would make sense since it also has the power to repel evil).
Though that also opens the question as to just WHY they needed to make a replacement Master Sword instead of just using the Four Sword in the first place.
@@Gamer1288 Maybe because the Four Sword was gone in that timeline. When Ganon destroyed Hyrule Castle in Oot he could have extingued the four sword that was resting there acording to the minish cap. It's surprisingly how almost everything fits in this theory
@@Gamer1288 Perhaps it was lost? The description of the Magical Sword from Zelda 1&2 states that it's the most powerful sword "in an age when the Master Sword's whereabouts are unknown". And if they could lose the most legendary sword in Hyrule, I'd imagine they could lose the Four Sword. We also technically don't know if the Four Sword is quite powerful enough to beat Ganon, since in the only game where it's used against him (LoZ:FSA), it was actually Zelda's magic that defeated him.
@Johnny Eyeball In FSA it was directly Zelda's magic that sealed Ganon into the Four Sword (Final Blow was technically Zelda). But the Master Sword has usually been the one to deal the final blow when it's used. Such as in OoT, TP, WW, and SS. While magic arrows are often used in conjunction, the Master Sword is typically the ultimate finisher.
Consider this: Most things that existed before Ocarina of Time and still existed after the end of Ocarina of Time had to have continued to exist in all three versions of the Timeline that followed. This means that somewhere beneath Windwaker's Great Sea, the Mirror of Twilight slumbers, and so, too, does it rest somewhere in the world of the Fallen timeline.
Maybe the sword being a time travelling relic. has its own timeline and is anchored in it..only appearing when needed by the hero..it's not in the temple of time because it's on link's back ...like the sword could travel to any point of it's lifespan just like a person could walk to a location but it can't be two places at once..?
@@shinon748 In the current form of the Timeline, yes. Personally, I would have preferred them to make a timeline jumping off from the Door of Time in Skyward Sword that lead to a timeline without a Master Sword for all of the Four Swords games to reside in. It would just make more sense, since outside of the Four Swords games, Ganondorf never reincarnates as himself.
I actually really like this theory. I had my doubts about it at first and thought it was going to be really far fetched, but after watching this video it makes a lot sense. I was amazed by how much stuff there is to back up this theory too. It’s almost like this was intentional 🧐!? P.S. Amazing video and have a New Year 😝🥳
@@LordBackuro It implies that the Master Sword of the Adult timeline would have simply returned to it's proper place at the Pedastal of Time upon Link's departure
@@funkydong5315 didn't play it either. I didn't have a DS till I was an adult ive been working on expanding my library to include all zelda games. I have to repair my NES, and I'm trying to decide how to go about WW and TP, might just get a GameCube again
Nintendo: “Eh, just make games, I don’t care if the storyline makes sense.” Dedicated fans making theories to fill the gaps and continuity errors Nintendo has avoided and ignored:
The nice thing about it is it leaves things open to interpretation. So if a part of the timeline doesn't work for you there's really no reason to just go with your own version.
I do like the concept of the sword being immutable and only able to exist in a single timeline, but I think what I like better is that the sword is, in a way, immune to time travel. So when the princess sent you back, the sword just kinda clattered to the ground, unaffected.
I like that. The only other explanation is that it exists outside the confines of time itself. So there's only ever been one master sword and it just is wherever it needs to be when it's needed (think of it as omni-present).
The location of the Master Sword in the Wind Waker can easily be in the temple of Time as in the adult timeline Hyrule castle was destroyed and one of the only large structures in Castletown that was left was the temple of Time. Maybe that is where Princess Zelda reestablished the kingdom after sending Link back in time.
This makes so much sense to me! Especially when you think about the fact that the hero of winds was actually unconnected to the spirit of the hero from the previous eras as stated by the king of red lions in windwaker. If windwaker link was not a true hero, he wouldn’t be able to wield the original master sword. But he would be able to wield this man made one, which was not as picky as the original. Great theory!
Joshua Warren. Lets not forget he was also chosen and accepted as a true hero by the God's after having the Master Sword. He was only accepted as the new hero and recognized by them after reassembling the Triforce of courage. So that shows this sword is indeed different in many aspects from the original.
I'd say rather after the Hero of Time era the limits on the sword had changed, as Link was determined to use that sword one way or another. After he defeated Ganondorf many years past without anyone using it so perhaps the Gods knew a new hero was bound to use it again eventually as the Hero of Twilight did as he was a very much related to the Hero of Time. As for Toon Link not being related to the Hero of Time is why when pulled it, it was just a basic sword until he proved himself he was worthy of its powers. I think generally it changes due to different art designs for each game but why would there be 2 Master Swords if they're all in the same location? Not exact place but area almost every time
I think that He was able to wield the blade because it was powerless and it isn't restricted to the hero because we know that Zelda can also wield the blade
@@Kspice9000 Except that's not even remotely true. Literally the only version of Link to have the Triforce BEFORE he gets the Master Sword is Twilight Princess Link. SS Link doesn't get the Triforce until AFTER Hylia blesses the newly-forged Master Sword. OoT Link doesn't get the Triforce until AFTER he pulls out the Master Sword and Ganondorf infiltrates the Sacred Realm, touching the Triforce and causing it to split. In ALttP, Ganon has the whole Triforce until Link kills him, so Link doesn't have the Triforce when he pulls the Master Sword. In ALBW, Link doesn't get the Triforce until he frees the Seven Sages, which happens AFTER he pulls the Master Sword. BotW Link doesn't get the Triforce at all.
I genuinely like this theory! It's very explanative and well-thought out, giving reason to believe that the mastersword wind waker link pulled was indeed a replica. Especially proven that the sword can be replicated (to a degree) by at least the sheikah and sages.
I think it's plausible that these are in fact two different Master Swords as you've said. However, I'd like to propose an idea for how events played out in Link's OoT timeline that may clean some things up slightly. Link may have arrived at a point in time essentially *just* after drawing the Master Sword, when his body was placed in a stasis for seven years. The sword sent back with Link takes its place in the pedestal, so that there is now a "pedestal sword" and a "sword with Link in stasis." The following events then play out: Gannondorf's plot is revealed by a young Link, and backed by Princess Zelda he is sentenced to death ala the events explained in Twilight Princess. Link embarks on his journey that begins the events of Majora's Mask. Much later, we can then have Twilight Princess happen where the Master Sword is still resting at the Temple of Time-- both Link and Zelda here being their fated reincarnations. Meanwhile, in the "adult" timeline, the Master Sword was sent back with Link. (The events leading to this timeline are preserved by maintaining a world state in which Link has drawn the sword and sleeps with it in stasis, but we're past that point now.) In the interest of safeguarding the future against the return of Ganon, the sages work with the Sheikah to create a new sword of evil's bane... and, well, you've said the rest!
You know that Link was sent back *before* he pulled the Master Sword right? Correction: HE WAS SENT BACK BEFORE GOING TO GORON VILLAGE, he didn't have the goron bracelet in the ending cutscene. That means there aren't 2 master swords existing at one time because when he was sent back in time he lost all his items from the adventure.
Yes otherwise he would’ve been sent back to a time where Ganondorf was able to access the temple of light. If you recall, if link never pulled the master sword Ganon would’ve never had and power and none of the events from OoT would’ve taken place. So he had to be sent back to before the sword was ever pulled to prevent living in a timeline where Ganondorf accessed the temple of light! Thank you for coming to my ted talk
@@josephinetyler4356 No idea! Maybe the original link was MURDERED! Inb4 the original link was told not to pull the master sword etc and Majora’s Mask was the link that came back from the future and decided to leave to not cause conflict /s
4:46 Lower Sanctum of Hyrule Castle's Master Sword is different from the Time Temple Master Sword, as it does not house the evil of the Great Demise, and also turned Ganondorf into a hulk of stone, which would not be the case had Demise been cealed away in That Master Sword. Ganondorf would've received powers beyond the Triforce.
Not necessarily, in Ocarina of Time link uses the master sword, which we know is the one from the Temple of Time, and it doesn't make Gannon more powerful then
I think there's a simpler explanation that doesn't need to have the Master Sword disappearing from the Wind Waker timeline. Basically, there was no hero to draw the sword from the Temple of Time, so it was left there to be 'drowned' under the waves. But they still needed a sword to deal with Ganondorf, so they forged a new (weaker) one.
While I don't know if the windwaker's master sword is necessarily weaker, it does make sense that when you are in the adult timeline, there is no master sword in the pedestal since link has it. And Since it clearly splits the timelines when he is sent back, Zelda, who would have still been the reincarnation of goddess Hylia, would have had the sages forge a new blade to replace the one they lost. As Hylia is the goddess of time, she would know that the Hero of Winds wouldn't be able to afford the same wait that the Hero of Time could to be an adult, so they made the new one with the intention that a child could wield it, instead of requiring Link to be an adult.
Historia states that after she sent Link back in time, she returns the Master Sword to its pedestal and seals the Door of Time. So the theory doesn't hold up.
I'm reasonably certain the original creators of the Goddess sword were the sages. Their insignia is present in the Sealed Grounds and on Skyloft... And whilst Link transformed the blade into the master sword the sages could have been said to have made it. The reason the Master sword serves as a key on Ganondorf's power is that it is the blade that sealed him and slew his precursor Demise.
@@danielthecake8617 Actually he's the embodiment of Demise's curse. Described as "an incarnation of my [Demise's] hatred." So Ganondorf is not entirely a reincarnation of Demise - That would imply that he is Demise reborn - Which he isn't - he's his own character... and Demise is destroyed at the end of Skyward Sword. It's worth noting that there is a difference between an incarnation and a reincarnation... and that Demise specifically refers to his hatred being reborn... not he himself. That hatred reborn is Ganondorf not Demise.
@@RG-Zeldaplayer Yeah, that is more correct. However, Demise wasn't destroyed. He was sealed within the Master Sword and released somewhere in the timeline (as evidenced in TOTK by the Demon King).
@@danielthecake8617 I actually see "Demon King" as an inherited title - meant to signal their connection but not to imply they are the same. The remnants of Demise's consciousness were sealed in the master sword - but that was destroyed slowly over the ages... which is why Link leaves the sword in the pedestal. I think Demise was The Demon King and Ganondorf is The Demon King. But Ganondorf is not Demise.
@@RG-Zeldaplayer but we have evidence there is more than one "master" sword. Like the kokiri swords and stuff. Botw's sword probably isn't The Goddess Sword.
OR... the sword didn't disappear with Link into the Child Timeline, staying behind with Zelda after Link vanished, falling to the ground after his body disappeared into the past (all of which we just didn't see happen onscreen). And then Zelda could have put the sword back in its pedestal in the Adult Timeline's Temple of Time (she was able to put the sword back in its pedestal in Breath of the Wild, so she may be allowed to carry the sword once it is out of its pedestal but simply cannot pull it out of the pedestal or use its power like Link can). And then, since Hyrule Castle had been reduced to a smoldering crater by Ganondorf, the new castle seen in The Wind Waker could have been built over the Temple of Time, since its interior does bear a resemblance to that of the Temple. After all, knowing that Ganondorf vowed to return, the royal family could have wanted to protect the sword in hopes that a new Hero that could use it would show up (not knowing that one wouldn't appear in their lifetime) and thus could have integrated the Temple of Time into the new Hyrule Castle built around it. The lake that sits next to the castle in the Wind Waker would thus be the result of the aforementioned crater expanding and being filled with rain water over time. The flaw about the sword looking the same in every 3D game except Wind Waker is that all of those games that tried to keep the sword's look consistent with Ocarina of Time came out after The Wind Waker. Twilight Princess was the first to establish this consistency, and then both Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild followed through with it after. At the time that The Wind Waker came out, this consistency hadn't been established yet. The argument only works in retrospect and argues that the makers of The Wind Waker deliberately made the Master Sword look different for in-story reasons rather than the more likely reason of mere artistic liberty superseding any brand consistency that had yet to be established at the time. Otherwise, had it been set forth earlier, The Wind Waker likely would have kept the sword's design the same, too. But it wasn't so it didn't. Still, it's an interesting idea; I just don't see it being the case.
And the reason Link stands in front of the Master Sword is also simple. It was yoused as a sort of fix point. Also i think anyone can carry the Sword. But only Link can pull it iut of the Stone und youse its power. Fore everyone else its just a fancy nirmal Sword with no special powers.
But what about the mockery lines of Ganondorf referring to the sword that "cannot seal the darkness" and his minions being trapped followed by the ending in which he's imprisoned by this Master Sword's power? The connection with the sages is an interesting argument because you power up WW Master Sword with their power. Anyway, you have good counter arguments but none of them have any in game proof, sadly we're left with just what ifs... Hmm
@@JKd3vLD When the Goddesses flooded the world and sunk Hyrule beneath the Great Sea, they could have been the ones who activated the Master Sword's power to freeze time inside the new Hyrule Castle. As for the sword's loss of the power to repel evil, it was freezing time for a long time, enough to run the sword dry by the time Wind Waker Link pulled it out of its pedestal. And Ganondorf murdered the existing Sages of Wind and Earth to prevent the sword from regaining its power after all those years of it using up its power to keep Hyrule Castle and its invading occupants frozen in time.
That explains why the child timeline always has different master swords, different reincarnations of the bkade of evils bane, rather it be the same blade in the ADULT timeline
The Master Sword only appears once in the Adult timeline, at the end of Wind Waker it stays stuck in Ganondorf's head. The sword in Phantom Hourglass is called the Phantom Sword and Spirit Tracks is the Lokomo Sword. Makes sense if it is a different Master Sword though all he really had to say was "Well the Master Sword never stayed in the Adult timeline so how is the Master Sword still in Wind Waker?"

I've been on a Zelda theory binge for a couple days, so I don't remember where I heard this, but apparently the goddess sword (pre- master sword) was created not only by the goddess but also with the help of the 6 original sages. So it makes total sense to me that they could make a duplicate that isn't as powerful as the original due to the fact that Hylia either wouldn't be present or just not at full power.
@@QuasarEE while I can see it as a retcon, I can also so it as alttp having a legend of what happened, and then in skyward sword you see the truth. Thank you very much! I’m happy that my observation that there was a master sword in the oracle games spiraled into such a big discussion in your discord and eventually lead to this theory with help from other Zelda fans! I’m happy that it was interesting enough for you to make a video on it aswell! I’m just really stoked right now! Haha!
@@wesnohathas1993 simply another man made master sword- if this theory proves that a man made master sword plus the constant prayer of the sages can reach the same level as the original- a man made but no prayer master sword would still be pretty bad ass and would be completely viable. that’s the conclusion I came to on the discord atleast- but other explanation was that the tarm woods in holodrum is connected to the lost woods in a weird way- like how the lost woods connects to Goron city and auras domain in oot- and if the og master sword was in the lost woods at that time then it could show up in the mystical tarm wood’s aswell
Spoiler warning for TOTK Well I'm pretty sure that in BOTW there would have technically been two master swords as well. Zelda turned into the Light Dragon and held onto the repaired master sword for Link to reclaim in TOTK, but she had to wait for centuries to do so. This means that when Link recovered the sword from the Korok forest in BOTW, the other version of the sword would be with the Light Dragon far up in the sky. I wonder what would have happened if Link accidentally stumbled upon both blades.
i have my own thought process and i have to check it in TOTK if the Light dragon and thus the Master sword exists till Link sends the Master Sword through time to Zelda lr its an over sight from Nintendo that just ruins everything we already know. I'm currently at the Boss for Mineru (evil ah boss but fun) and been avoiding spoilers beyond that part like the plague so idk whats in store. I'm enjoying the game and story alot just not for timeline sense, Unless its the explanation that it was Zonai that created Skyloft and not Lady Hylia or it's something like that. Idk it's like all the NPC's in TOTK act like they have dementia cause i've only seen Yunobo acknowledged the Divine beasts and everyone else, Even Purah & Robbie don't say anything about the Sheika
I thought about this. The bootstrap could've perhaps created some sort of Last Thursdayism situation where the exact moment when Zelda or the Master Sword got warped to the past, the universe sort of "corrected" itself for the chain of events in TotK to have always been as such. As in, everything from the Zonai first arriving in what would become Hyrule to the events of BotW did happen, and historical records are intact in the present, but the past doesn't actually exist anymore. It was all made over again and put in the exact right place for everything to fit the new events, post-time travel. It's why the Light Dragon wasn't ever present in BotW. And to add to this, this isn't to say that before the warp, the history of Rauru and the Imprisoning War were any different. Ganondorf still explicitly mentions the "new" series of events and remembers Zelda in the beginning, but there's no conflict since this universal correction was only done to prevent Zelda and the Master Sword from existing in two places at once, possibly by the Master Sword itself.
I just kind of assumed zelda as a dragon form was in that weird realm you see in her cutscene where it's all clouds and light till Link sends the sword back in time then she shows up in the sky
The problem with this is that the triforce when link disappeared it fragmented in pieces so it didn't disappeared so just to assume that the sword could disappear because of this doesn't make sense.
I'm sure it's a different sword. In Ocarina, Link travels to the future that would become the Wind-Waker timeline with the Master Sword. There is still only the one Master Sword that Link has with him, because at the moment they are the same timeline and therefore no other Master Sword exists other than the one he is using. After defeating/sealing Ganondorf, Link is then sent back to the past, before he pulled the Sword and set the metaphorical Clock of the game in motion. Thus, in the future, they sent the only Master Sword of their Timeline into the past, or lost to time since Link didn't put the Sword back, but was sent back to before he pulled it, meaning that their Timeline does not have a Master Sword. Or rather didn't, seeing as Ganondorf states they, the "fools," made a new Master Sword. My only question is, since Ocarina Link didn't place the Sword back in the pedestal, and was sent back to before he pulled it, where is the Master Sword he had? Or rather, *WHEN* is the Master Sword he had?
He may not have put it in the pedestal, but rather zelda sent both of them back to before link picked up the sword, which would mean ganon did not get access to the sacred realm.
I think when Zelda sent Link and the Master Sword back in time each individual thing merge in the same body. Because if don't, then there should be two links and two master sword in the child timeline
This was a great video and theory! One small issue however is that in the Hyrule Historia it is stated that after sending Link back at the end of OoT, Zelda does indeed return the Master Sword back in its pedestal ("[Zelda] put the Master Sword back in its pedestal and closed the Door of Time"-Hyrule Historia, pg. 122). Still, this was an interesting and pretty well-built theory!
For those of you who go, "Wait, this comment seems familiar..." that's because my comment that I left 1 year ago was auto-deleted today because I had edited the post to include the Master Sword wiki and where you can buy the Hyrule Historia. Since this one line sort of disproves the theory, I reposted it (with slightly better wording and a citation) so that people can see it and know
This is such a good theorie but you miss some things 1)Link was sended before he goes to the death mountain so if he was sended with the master sword using the logic of the one master sword by timeline then the master sword shouldn't be in the pedestal 2) it could hapened like with the triforce, the triforce split in the adult timeline and the one in te child timeline go with their respective owners so in that way the master sword can stay in the adult timeline and of course it is also the fact that link didn't travel back in time with any of the stuff that already have before of zelda send him back 3) and the final fact it's that in the hyrule casttle there is a statue of the hero of time and the master sword that it has it's the same as the one we found in The Wind Waker
I personally believe that Link was sent back to the moment before or immediately after he pulled the master sword. I mean, why else would he be in the temple of time off all places, whose door is open which he would never be able to access if he didn't have all three spiritual stones? Not to mention the light that surrounds Link when he's sent back goes to the master sword. So when Link is sent back, he's sent back after Ganondorf had already attacked the castle with Impa and Zelda forced to flee. He already had the ocarina of time and all three spiritual stones in his possession. The part where he goes back to Zelda at the castle was her returning to the castle and waiting for Link to return, only to find the Triforce of Courage glowing on his hand. So what about Ganondorf? I have two theories: One, Ganondorf was forced to retreat after Link closed the sacred realm, fleeing to the Gerudo Desert, creating his army and later attacking Hyrule until he was captured and sentenced to death, only to be sent to the Twilight Realm. Two, Ganondorf himself was actually sealed by Link in the sacred realm, trapping him inside and preventing him from conquering Hyrule despite that he already had the triforce of power in his possession. It explains why Link has it in the end credits of the game, and it isn't until the hero of time removes the master sword once again, likely as an adult this time, that Ganondorf is set free and attempts to wage war on Hyrule. As for the master sword itself, I personally believe that the master sword stayed behind in the adult timeline with Zelda, who placed the Master Sword in it's pedestal. I also believe all the other stuff Link had, including the goron bracelet, stayed behind in the adult timeline, explaining why he doesn't have it in the child timeline.
@@dayshallcomeagain In the majora's mask scene where you got back the ocarina you can see a flashback of zelda giving link the ocarina and the theory of all link stuff keeping in the adult timeline makes no sense cause... just why? why te things that prove that he didn't go to death mountain but no things like his sword and shield ? Love the theory. It makes a lot of sense. That said, it does have implications for BotW’s timeline placement. Another possibility is that Zelda just used an item duplication glitch on the Master Sword.
The BOTW timeline placement is still tricky though. If the Adult timeline has the New Master sword, then BOTW can’t be happening in it, because the Master Sword in BOTW is the original one. But BOTW has the Rito, and they’re only present in the Adult timeline. I think It’s better to think of the BOTW timeline as a completely different universe.
@@TheDailyBugleJ3 AFAIK, by BotW the timelines supposedly recombined (it has elements from all of them, too, e.g. the Rito AND the Zora), so it would actually have both.
What if, as part of the downfall timeline, the Master sword was destroyed, or at least partially, and the sages reforged the weapon. 'Cause while I haven't read the manual itself, I could swear that it says somewhere in the backstory for ALttP that the SAGES crafted the Master Sword.
That actually makes sense. The downfall Master Sword was destroyed (or at least lost its power like in botw or maybe even Fy died like Girahim), then the Sages crafted one with their powers, this could explain why the downfall Master Sword is the only one that can "level up" as it's shown in A Link to the past, a link between worlds and the oracle games
@@oathboundhero1782 not necessarily the down fall sword which was weaker and different could have been easily hidden or even destroyed by the true blade or if the master sword does transcend time may have eliminated the weaker versions of its self and I’m almost positive the intro cutscene does say the sages crafted the blade
Only the American manual says that. In the original Japanese manual for ALttP, the Master Sword existed before Ganon and the sages had to search for it when Ganon arose. Guess they were blind though since in the Ocarina retcon it turned out the sword was right under their noses in Castle Town... XD

What do you mean when you said "this theory would make sense"? Using the word "would" leaves the impression that you have contradicting information that goes against Nintendo Mask Bandits theory but you seem to be in favor of his theory. Did you mean to say "this theory DOES make sense"?
Code Maxim They said a simple statement. This theory would make sense [if Nintendo made it canon, and confirmed that the Master Sword in the Wind Waker was faux]. If you got bent out of shape because he said would, you should have said a few words: “Did you mean to say, this ‘does’ make sense? Or do you know something else to negate it?” You didn’t need to be rude, is what your comment came off as.
@@itsMKiAM I was asking a genuine question and had no intention on being rude... I overthink alot of things I read, thinking that person may have forgotten to add a point to their statement that went against Masked Nintendo Bandits theory. Also, I apologize if I got you bent out of shape with my simple question.
Can't say I buy this one. In Ocarina of Time 3D, the item description for the Master Sword labels it as a sword that transcends time to smite evil. If that were true, which I believe it is, then it's likely that the Master Sword simply transcended time and exists in more than one timeline simultaneously, appearing in the Adult Timeline (after it was taken out of it) for when it was needed to smite the ever-looming threat of Ganondorf. The design is different because it's the second 3D appearance of the blade, so I'm sure consistency wasn't nearly as important for them at the time, especially with the drastic change of art style. Ganon's line about the people "below" (aka the people of Hylia) creating the Master Sword exists because Hylians DID make the Master Sword, until the Skyward Sword retcon. Wind Waker came out before Skyward Sword, so there was nothing to be done about that; and by the time the HD version of the game came out, they probably didn't even think to fix it. The Sheikah certainly didn't make it either, as we see with the Royal Weapons that were horribly failed recreations of the Master Sword. Saying that the Sheikah of the past would be able to do it when the Sheikah of BOTW couldn't is a bit of a stretch. The Master Sword in Wind Waker is the same blade, and it was never removed from any of the timelines because it transcends time, regardless of what pedestal it appears in. Sometimes Zelda lore just doesn't line up perfectly, but I think it lines up better if it was the same sword than if it wasn't. Now, if you want to see an ACTUAL "Second Master Sword," turn to the Oracle games. Oracle Link receives his own unique version of the Master Sword there, disconnected from the Master Sword everyone knows.
@@loreleihillard5078 Yeah, so WW Ganondorf's statement still reigns true somewhat. Not that we should even expect Ganondorf to know (or care) who or what forged the Master Sword.
The True Master Sword design is used for the Statue of the Hero of Time, + Ganondorf dialog is impossible to explain with just 1 sword. Symbolism is so important in Zelda they would never ever just change the design for the sword, the symbolism is what makes the master sword the master sword
I always liked the idea that the sages, along with the light force, empowered the four sword to become the new master sword. While forming a new blade from the four sword would be tough, constructing a new master sword from scratch seems improbable. Even the goddess sword required subsequent empowerment and tempering from the dragons to become the blade of evils bane. You had to start with something.
My theory: The Hero of Time actually left behind the Master Sword and "inherited" it from the new timeline before Ganondorf attacked Hyrule. He placed it back in the pedestal and the Door of Time closed. The same thing happened with him "inheriting" the Triforce of Courage from the new timeline. In the old timeline, the Triforce of Courage shattered due to being torn away from its user. In the new timeline, this causes the Triforce of Courage to go to the Hero of Time and, after his death, the Hero of Twilight. The Triforce of Wisdom went to Princess Zelda and was passed on to the new Zelda in twilight princess. The Triforce of Power went to Ganondorf. This happened because of the Triforce of Courage being separated from the other two. The Master Sword lost its power after being torn away from its user and that's why it needs the Sages to keep its power. Along with this, the Sages gave it new powers by binding it to Laruto and Fado, who were most likely descendants of Ruto and Saria. Medli and Mekar were their descendants and successors, so they had the same powers. Its weak form is what happened after the Hero of Time left.
Dude, for years I never understood how a third timeline could happen, but your explanation involving the method of time travel, it actually makes sense to me now! Thank you!!
The only holes I see in this theory is that Link was sent back before he met Zelda, before he picked up the Master Sword, which explains why it's in the pedestal at the end. Also, since he couldn't bring the Triforce of Courage back with him, it stands to reason that the Master couldn't be brought back with him. But this still is a good theory nonetheless. It all adds up too good to not be the case.
@@reginaldrobinson5062 That was the Triforce of Courage in that timeline. The one he had as an adult couldn't go back in time with him, so it stayed behind. That's why in the Wind Waker the Triforce of Courage is in pieces.
Imo, this is a long stretch. Any perceived differences are due to the art styles. The decals and the hilt being slightly different isn’t enough to spawn an entire theory imo. Nice vid tho, ig
@@quinnsinclair7028 Now that I think about it, you are right! Why could that be? In the Wind Waker, I think the reason why link can wield the master sword is that he, at first, gets a not awaken master sword, and gradually recover it's real power. Other cases maybe can be explained by if link already has his triforce or not.
well considering the fact that the master sword has been shown to change form it is possible that the master sword can change its form to the time line its in, plus not only that the master sword is also a piece of time and space itself the other half is the ocarina which controls time, so with that the master sword could be the one piece that controls space, so coincidentally it could have just used its own power to create another version of itself in a different time line since you need both the master sword (controller of space) and the ocarina of time (controller of time) there for when zelda sent adult link back in time the master sword realized it wasnt going to exist in that timeline anymore so it created a new version of itself in the wind waker thus making a new timeline and why the descendant of the hero of time is able to use the new master sword
Id say when it comes to what happens with Twilight Princess, the Master Sword is a sacred blade that transcends time. Its missing from the Temple of Time in the past is because its already in Link's hand, thus preventing its own paradox and keeping Link from dual wielding. We do know that Zelda put the sword back in the Adult Timeline, so the Master Sword in Wind Waker is the real deal.

True
The Fallen Timeline is the original, and then goes Adult followed by child.
@@StealthRose1992 No
@@StealthRose1992 Well, from a publishing standpoint, yeah. From the "finalized", "Official" timeline standpoint... maybe?

YES! YES!
@@Gamer1288 I always took Minish Cap (being made years before Skyward Sword) meant for the Four Sword to BE the Master Sword.

This actually makes a lot of sense!!

Not necessarily, in Ocarina of Time link uses the master sword, which we know is the one from the Temple of Time, and it doesn't make Gannon more powerful then
Demise was not straight up sealed into it, his soul is also deteriorating inside of it.
@@DragonHeart53 epic title "The Lost Master Sword"
This honestly makes so much sense that I now consider this theory cannon. I always thought it was weird that it needed sages prayers to work
Historia states that after she sent Link back in time, she returns the Master Sword to its pedestal and seals the Door of Time. So the theory doesn't hold up.
Facts
@@enderoctanus book also says it can be retconned at any time
I'm reasonably certain the original creators of the Goddess sword were the sages. Their insignia is present in the Sealed Grounds and on Skyloft... And whilst Link transformed the blade into the master sword the sages could have been said to have made it. The reason the Master sword serves as a key on Ganondorf's power is that it is the blade that sealed him and slew his precursor Demise.
Already said this to about seven people but Ganondorf is Demise's reincarnation and thus the same person, not his precursor.
@@danielthecake8617 Actually he's the embodiment of Demise's curse. Described as "an incarnation of my [Demise's] hatred."
So Ganondorf is not entirely a reincarnation of Demise - That would imply that he is Demise reborn - Which he isn't - he's his own character... and Demise is destroyed at the end of Skyward Sword.
See y’all in 2021!! Although world-wise this year has not been great, you and other youtuber s have really helped keep my mind off of things!💚
OR... the sword didn't disappear with Link into the Child Timeline, staying behind with Zelda after Link vanished, falling to the ground after his body disappeared into the past (all of which we just didn't see happen onscreen).
Me as well. I like the idea of there being 'multiple master swords' but just not the case for the wind waker.

The original ALttP backstory stated it as such, that the Master Sword was forged by a group of ancient sages. Skyward Sword attempts to retcon it.

Spoiler warning for TOTK
Well I'm pretty sure that in BOTW there would have technically been two master swords as well.
Ganondorf has a goddamn heart attack as Link dual wields master swords
I just kind of assumed zelda as a dragon form was in that weird realm you see in her cutscene where it's all clouds and light till Link sends the sword back in time then she shows up in the sky
dude these are spoilers, i already beat the game but still
The problem with this is that the triforce when link disappeared it fragmented in pieces so it didn't disappeared so just to assume that the sword could disappear because of this doesn't make sense.
Or rather, *WHEN* is the Master Sword he had?
loop
He may not have put it in the pedestal, but rather zelda sent both of them back to before link picked up the sword, which would mean ganon did not get access to the sacred realm.
How the heck do HYLIANS make a Master Sword???
@@rishanjeyakumar4738 hi, the sword did not have to be drawn for the sacred realm to be accessed. The Door of Time was the only gate.

Can we get a "Time" counter for every time he said "Time"?
This is such a good theorie but you miss some things
1)Link was sended before he goes to the death mountain so if he was sended with the master sword using the logic of the one master sword by timeline then the master sword shouldn't be in the pedestal
2) it could hapened like with the triforce, the triforce split in the adult timeline and the one in te child timeline go with their respective owners so in that way the master sword can stay in the adult timeline and of course it is also the fact that link didn't travel back in time with any of the stuff that already have before of zelda send him back
3) and the final fact it's that in the hyrule casttle there is a statue of the hero of time and the master sword that it has it's the same as the one we found in The Wind Waker
The third one was actually looked at for prep work on this theory, turns out it does not have the same hilt at all as the one used by link in ww

This makes so much sense. Will be referring the WW master sword to the ‘Sage Sword’ from now on.
Unfortunately, the sages do not have the power to forge a Master Sword. That would be cool, though.
The timelines convergeance proves there is only one Master Sword.
XD

Fi is still trapped out there because we don't know what happened to the original master sword.
Even with the retcon, the sages still forged the Goddess Sword before it was blessed by Hylia
This guy actually predicted it, but not in the way he thought
I honestly love this theory it makes a lot of sense! And just adds an even cooler side to the games, keep up the great stuff
Ganandorf when there is a 3rd master sword: "Oh gosh...."
Its weak form is what happened after the Hero of Time left.
the devs who made the mark for a inside joke: this is fine
What inside joke?
@@gothnerd887 developers will sometimes include inside jokes in their games just for fun

Totk has confirmed that the same master sword can exist twice at the same time
Now, this is now part of my headcanon
I love it!
Does this mean there could be two links in one game, each with a different master sword, since only the first master sword chose the hero to wield it?
Dude, for years I never understood how a third timeline could happen, but your explanation involving the method of time travel, it actually makes sense to me now! Thank you!!
The only holes I see in this theory is that Link was sent back before he met Zelda, before he picked up the Master Sword, which explains why it's in the pedestal at the end. Also, since he couldn't bring the Triforce of Courage back with him, it stands to reason that the Master couldn't be brought back with him. But this still is a good theory nonetheless. It all adds up too good to not be the case.
He had the triforce on his hand at the end of the game. That's why he was able to convince the Royal Family to seal Ganondorf.

@@reginaldrobinson5062 That was the Triforce of Courage in that timeline. The one he had as an adult couldn't go back in time with him, so it stayed behind. That's why in the Wind Waker the Triforce of Courage is in pieces.
11:07-11:40 That gave me chills
Imo, this is a long stretch. Any perceived differences are due to the art styles.
The decals and the hilt being slightly different isn’t enough to spawn an entire theory imo.
Nice vid tho, ig
The one thing that really makes me belive on this is that link is not over 17 in wind waker and still can wield the master sword.
That's a rule that only ever has applied to OoT Link.
BotW Link drew the sword at around 13 and most of the 2D Links look 16 at the oldest.
Loved it, it explains the two different lore stories about the blade.
