He had to have died. I also took the Wind Waker Opening story into account, saying the Hero Of Time just... "Vanished"? which makes me think something killed him at some point and his corpse has been yet to be found. There is no way a Hero of legend was never honored in a tomb, yet forgotten.

Honestly, even without the master sword, it's hard to imagine *anything* dropping the Hero of Time. After Majora's Mask, the Hero of Time wields a magical arsenal so immense he's basically a walking army. The only Link whose collective magical weaponry is comparable to the Hero of Time's is the Hero of Legend (the Link from Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons).
I think the armor shows us that the Hero of Time was much older upon his death. The reason being that heavy plate is very different from the type of garb that Links typically run around in. Usually, Links fight in a simple tunic, occasionally mixing in some magical mail. But other than the Hero of the Wild, we really don't see Links going about in plate. The only time I can think of the Hero of Time wearing anything like that is when he's transformed into the Fierce Deity.
So, why would the Hero of Time, who is used to fighting hulking monsters and demigods while wearing only a tunic, suddenly decide to plate up? Age.
While younger, this link could count on his agility to block or dodge anything thrown his way before retaliating with some nightmarish magical weapon. But even the Hero of Time would age. And with age, reflexes slow. It's much harder to backflip out of the ax swing of an Iron Knuckle at 50 than it is at 17. At a certain point, you can no longer count on your ability to get out of the way of attacks, and instead need to focus on your capacity to tank them.
Now, since the Hero of Time has descendants, he obviously had a family of some kind. However, that doesn't mean he had someone to pass his techniques on to. Most Hylians are pretty fragile and hardly warlike, (hence the fact that they need a green-clad kid to save their country every game).
Perhaps the hero's children and grandchildren were just peaceful Hylians who had little to no ability/interest in learning combat. Consider where the Hero of Twilight starts: a peaceful herding village with only *ONE* person who even knows what a sword is!
In the child timeline, the Hero of Time's warning basically allowed Hyrule to stop Ganondorf before he could do any real damage. So, the time the Hero lived in would've been somewhat peaceful. There wouldn't have been a real need to learn combat techniques. And with the Sheikah Tribe basically being down to one member, he wouldn't really have anyone else to entrust all this martial knowledge to.
Additionally, while everyone in the Hyrule of the *adult* timeline knows what an absolute beast the Hero of Time is (we know they do from the legend at the start of Wind Waker), his accomplishments were much less well known in the child timeline which his natural life took place in.
Sadly, the Hero of Time doesn't really live in a world where his heroics are well known. We're not sure exactly *how* far back in time he was sent by adult timeline Zelda. Obviously, he was *at least* returned to a point before arriving with the third spiritual stone, since Link finds Zelda in her courtyard at the end of the game meaning it was before she fled the castle. But how close was it? Did adult timeline Zelda send you back to JUST before she had to flee, meaning your warning arrives barely in time to stop Ganondorf? Or did she send you back to before ANY of the troubles Ganondorf caused? (Cursing the Great Deku Tree, Sealing Dodongo's Cavern, and...whatever he did to Jabu-jabu)
This means that, at most, the Hero of Time would've been thought of well by Darunia and Princess Ruto, (and that's only if he was returned to a time after he had resolved their issues). Other than that, his accomplishments would basically be 'that kid who warned us that Ganondorf was up to some shady shit'. A service to the crown, no doubt. But even such a valuable tip-off is a FAR cry from the savior of Hyrule that the Hero of Time is. Now, while the Child Timeline Hero of Time DID save Termina in Majora's Mask, that is a completely different world from Hyrule, not to mention that thanks to the closed time loop, public knowledge of his involvement in THAT may have been spotty at best.
So, the only ones in the child timeline who would've known how much of a hero Link really was would have to be: individuals with supernatural insight, OR people who would believe Link if he told them this fantastic tale. You could argue who fits this criteria, but I think it would include: Zelda, Impa, Saria, Darunia (IF Link was sent back to a point in time after he had cleared Dodongo's Cavern), Ruto (IF Link was sent back to a point after he had cleared Jabu-Jabu), Skull Kid, Tatl, and the Happy Mask Salesman.
So, to get back to the point, let's review a bit.
The Hero of Time lives in a Hyrule where the majority of his accomplishments are not widely known, he's not held in particularly high regard or seen as a valuable source of advice by a majority of the population.
The Hyrule he lives in is a relatively peaceful one with a low pool of potential individuals to pass combat techniques on to.
The Sheikah, the tribe he'd be most likely to entrust any such techniques to, are all but extinct at this point in time.
So, it may not have been that he died unexpectedly, but that he just didn't have someone to pass his knowledge on to.
That being said, please enjoy this minor bit of speculation via storytelling.
A Hero of Time in his late 80s saddles up his horse as he prepares for his yearly pilgrimage. He bids a fond farewell to his family, promising that he'll be back in a few days' time, and sets off for the forest. The plate armor he's clad in weighs heavy upon his shoulders, but his missing eye is a testament to the fact that he's not as fast as he once was. He pats his satchel, filled with a slew of magical items and green potions that would allow him to lay waste to anything that dares cross his path. He briefly wonders if he should stop by a fairy fountain to nab a few, just in case.
Shaking his head, he disregards the thought. For all these years, there's only ever been one fairy he's wished to see on these trips and he knows he won't find her at any fountain. Upon entering the forest, an old sense of familiarity washes over him. The smell of the trees, the light of the fireflies, and the ever-present music of his friend's song fills the air. A laugh escapes him as the memory of his sworn brother suddenly bursting into a mad dance comes to mind.
Still chuckling, he rides into a clearing with two stumps and brings his mount to a stop. He reaches into his pack and pulls out a mask he purchased in castle town the other day. With a slight grin, he trots up to the tall stump and places the new mask upon it, knowing it will be found once he leaves.
As he heads deeper into the woods the fog begins to thicken. He's long since learned the patterns to avoid being tricked out of the woods by the magic of the forest. Despite that, the woods still seem almost impossibly huge. She's here somewhere...she has to be. As the hours drag on he begins to tire. After shaking himself awake for the 4th time, he decides it would be best to make camp for the night.
Too tired to even bother removing his armor, he lies down within the cradle of the roots of a large tree. He keeps his satchel nearby and he starts to drift off listening to the comforting sounds of the forest.
Just before his consciousness fades for the last time, he thought he heard a familiar voice call him a 'lazy boy',
...but perhaps it was only a dream.

It's very unlikely to be right, but because of the leaves I love the idea that, while he was mortally wounded in battle, he mustered up the strength to drag himself all the way back to the Kokiri Forest or the Lost Woods to die, and the leaves and plants grew around him, consuming him as the Lost Woods often do to lost souls, making him a part of the it all. And then, with the passing of knowledge from one hero to the next, he was finally able to be at peace, resting in the place where he first began his quest hundreds of years ago

Fairies in LoZ disappear after they fulfilled their purpose, like the ones who heal us in the fountains.
Link's journey was over, so Navi's purpose is complete. She flew out of the temple when they returned so Link didn't have to see her die.

    • @DDSnickle

@@mostlyimpulsive3462 , That is interesting to me. I never fully understood why Navi would stay at the sword that would supposedly be sealed for many many years until it is needed again. I would understand that she would stay there to guard it as long as she could, but even then, even if the sword was disturbed, what would she be able to do?
Now with your theory, she disappeared soon after, but i never noticed the line in where it states that fairies disappear after their purpose has been completed. All the Kokiri kids still have their fairies, but we never get to know their exact purpose. We never see a kokiri without a fairy and the start of the game, dialogue with other Kokiri kids seems to suggest that it was strange Link did not have a fairy of his own. If fairies would really disappear after their purpose, we would at least have seen a Kokiri without one right?

    • @mostlyimpulsive3462
      @mostlyimpulsive3462 4 ปีที่แล้ว +94

@@DDSnickle You raised a good point! In my theory, every kokiri is assigned a fairy whose purpose is to be their guardian. They didn't have a specific purpose other than "companion", and since kokiri are something like immortal children, they're around for a while, and the fairies won't disappear unless their kokiri does. Because without a kokiri to protect, their job is done. Case in point, we never saw Saria's fairy again after she ascended as the forest sage. Saris fulfilled her destiny as a sage, living on another plane entirely, thus her fairy disappeared.
Link's case was special in particular in that he was never assigned a guardian fairy like the other kokiri, because he wasn't one. Navi was sent to him at the start of his quest to be his guide in this journey, and this journey specifically. Unlike the kokiri's fairies, Navi was sent on a clear, scenario-sensitive purpose, hence her work is considered over when the world was saved. So she disappeared.

The Hero of Time is easily the most tragic of the Links. When you truly think about his life and everything he went through, it’s really screwed up

    • @alexandrews7068
      @alexandrews7068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +302

Agreed, though after playing BotW earlier this year finally and replaying Ocarina/Twilight, I think while Hero of Time is very existentially depressing, the Hero of the Wild is tragic in some related ways. Both of their stories involve a trip through time, but in Wild's case it was one way and it was because he basically died. Time having to deal with war and a lost future is rough, especially as a kid; the reason I tend to see Wild as a more tragic figure is he doesn't have that ability to go back in time
In that attack and 100 year jump, he died, his friends died, family died, and Mipha his implied girlfriend dies as well. He wakes up with a shattered memory, in a world broken by Ganon that he has no choice but to keep living in. Ontop of that, he is alongside Zelda in this - they both failed to seal Calamity Ganon, since he didnt awaken the Master Sword fully nor did she awaken her Triforce in time.
Its also implied a lot that he took his vow of silence, or at least quiet to best focus on his duty and training, a quiet struggle mirroring Zeldas more obvious struggle with the same idea. What he trained his life for, he failed the first time - his comrades all fell before he did and before he finally collapsed he was ready to take an eyebeam to keep the last one alive. Its mentioned offhandedly that he often smiles, but is more often quiet and even a bit sad looking as the burden and stress was weighing down on him.
This is just my personal outlook, but there is something so tragically relatable to Wild Link and Zelda. They didnt win and walk away knowing nobody would know what they did - they failed and the world remembered. They are recalled as Heroes, despite link and the audience knowing thats not the entire story, especially not how Zelda saw it.
I think this can be best summarized with music - when I think of Time Link, the music that comes to my head is the Great Fairy fountain theme. Somber, nostolgic, quiet and a tune that fades off.
The song in my head for Wild Link is that crazy Hyrule Castle outdoor theme - its a theme that the second you hear it framed around the front silhouette of the castle you can practically feel the expression on his face. He cant fix the world, he has nothing to go back to, he failed completely the first time but those marching thumps like heartbeats in the music says "I have nothing else to live for but to do this again"
I feel its very telling in just their expressions - Time Link has a time when we see him shocked, smiling, laughing as a kid. He is serious as an adult because he has to be... but Wild Link is a lot less cheerful.
They are both tragic figures, but Wild gets to me more. He died and Zelda got sealed and 100 years later he comes back to beat Ganon finally... only to learn in the sequel that it looks like Calamity was just a puppet. Hero of Time is a soft spoken man reminiscing of a past and future gone - the Hero of the Wild is the throbbing tinnitus of single minded marching looking out at a smashed red sky, as trapped in your own purpose and body as the other Champions were in their machines.
Ive recently felt that none of the Champions made it out untrapped: the 4 had their souls trapped in their machines, Zelda trapped herself in a spiritual form with Ganon, and Link is ultimately sealed in his own body, just as quiet.
With a worn out Master Sword that was quiet to him and lacking that Green Hero attire, Wild is definitely the Champion of the Wild, but I feel that his tragedy and the tragedy of their group was that they couldn't live upto the title of Hero, and walking through the ruins of the world is an every day reminder for Zelda and Link.
Ocarina is that smiling reunion at the end. For me, BotW is is the tear laden breakdown in the woods when Zelda realizes all the insecurity they both had about themselves manifested in a living nightmare slaughter. Theres is something so human and so tragic about their fears of inadequacy turning out so painfully true
The Hero of Time died a legendary hero who saved 2 worlds and failed in a third - the Hero of the Wild is remembered as a champion that tried to save the world, but tragically could not

Termina is probably Lorule, there's a pretty compelling theory on this.
Hero of Twilight being the descendant of Hero of time is a very good argument for him to have escaped, however, it's the only non-debunked/explainable argument.
Which also could be explained by; they're in a feudal time in oot hyrule, dude's been an adult and probably had some thoughts that was unusual to him. When he came back to being a child, maybe he played around with that girl al Lon Lon's... I mean.. it's unfortunately possible. The youngest mother irl was like an indian girl aged 5 or something crazy low... so... lets not go further into that.
That's the only explaination for it I could come up with, and It's not completely out of the question for Nintendo to hint at some disturbing themes, especially in that timeline for some reason.. even the downfall timelines haven't been as edgy/contriversial as the child timeline.. Given that MM game story symbolises the 5 stages of grief might just indicate that it's the last game we'll see legend of time, or it might indicate that he died, or grew up in the lost woods traveling between worlds and died.. the chance of him escaping the lost woods though? unfathomably slim, as the lost woods is basically the entryway to all worlds and pararel universes, which might be an unlimited amount. He's more than capable of surviving in there for a long time though, enough to grow up and being defeated in combat.

The Hero of Time is extremely tragic in all 3 timelines. In the child timeline he got sent back in time to warn the king about Ganondorf, which instigated a civil war that ended in the slaughter of most Gerudo, not to mention the fact Link got his childhood stripped away from him and he ended up becoming a lingering spirit. In the adult timeline he had to reform a war torn Hyrule, never getting to experience his childhood. In the downfall timeline he literally just dies at the hands of Ganondorf leading to the complete and utter destruction of Hyrule via a flood of biblical proportions.

It's implied that Bongo Bongo was once a villager who was turned into a monster because of his obsession with the Lens of Truth.
"A long time ago... There was a man in this very village who had an eye they said could see the truth! Now usually, you have to train your mind's eye most strenuously to actually see the truth... But this fella, no, they say he had a different way of doing things... His house stood where the well is now..."
Notice Bongo Bongo's defining feature is one glowing red eye. I believe that The Hero of Time eventually overused his Lens of Truth and it started to affect him, so he had to stop before it destroyed him entirely.

I think he died as an older man, and that his appearance is more symbolic than literal. At most, the broken armor represents the decay of his actual ceremonial attire (because decomposition will take down nearly anything) but could possibly also be a reflection of his state of mind in death. He feels rotted and destitute and forgotten, overtaken by the elements, which comes off in his appearance.
A final boss battle with Dark Link would be pretty dope, though.

that’swhat_gsaid, here’s my take on TP’s Link and OoT’s Link. I’ll Linksplain. That was because after ocarina of time child Link goes back to lon lon ranch and settles down there, becoming a ranch-hand. he later grows up and marries Malon. when he’s an adult he goes to hyrule castle town and becomes a knight. but some time passes and Ganondorf breaks the seal starting the second gerudo hylian war (the first was at the beginning of ocarina and it set the stage for Link to end up at Kokiri, as his father: a Hylian knight before him: died in that war.. and his mother fatally wounded flees with survivors from castle town to the Forest and later dies.) so therefore, both Link and his dad were hyrulian knights and both died in the gerudo hylian wars, where the king fought to unite the kingdom, banishing the gerudo. the scene in which Zelda and Link meet showed Ganondorf coming before the king as a (false) peace treaty and allegiance. after this is where we see Ganondorf tried and later executed, though it was botched up and he was again sealed away. after Link’s death, survivors again flee castle town to lon lon ranch, because of its closest proximity to the town and fortified walls and live stock. however, Ganondorf’s troops soon take the ranch over using it as a stronghold for a while before it was totally destroyed in the war being used for its strategic location. Those who fled turned again south west and some came to the Forest later rebuilding their lives, establishing Ordon and renaming Kokiri Forest Faron Woods. Malon and her children must have fled with them and made it, because we see later a direct descendant of Link- His great grandson.. and he meets up with him mentoring him about strength and courage, teaching him sword technique.. afterwards calling him his child. It all fits! There, a little Linkucation!

In Ocarina of time in the Ice Cavern, the mini boss before you get the iron boots is a giant white wolfos. The wolfos attacks that vulnerable area where there is no armor. The white wolfos has solid red eyes and is very similar to Shade's wolf form. Most of the skills he teaches you will work well for this creature and its defense. Also, they make another appearance in Twilight Princess in Snowpeak Ruins and the path there. The back slice lets you get behind the wolf and defeat it. The great spin attack is ACTUALLY USED on the white wolfos in Twilight Princess and is one of the best ways to defeat them. After that, the helm splitter is incredibly effective at removing the wolfos defense. I think they attack in packs and link got outnumbered.

However, since his life was ended abruptly, he was cursed to live as a ghost until the next great hero arose so he could pass on his skills and finally be at peace

He goes back to reflect on his life, his lost childhood, his regrets of not being remembered as the Hero that saved Hyrule from a Terrible Future. To remember his good friend Saria who inspired him to press forward into certain danger with courage. The Hero of Time makes one last stop, The Great deku tree. The one who told Link of the legend he would one day become. Old link leans over and places his withered hand on the old tree’s decaying trunk and weeps. Suddenly and without warning something horrible, something evil appears behind him, without a shadow of a doubt link knows that the interloper behind him is Dark Link, his old foe. He turns to face his darker reflection and draws his sword without hesitation. Dark link does the same. Their two blades clash together with a clang of steel. Dark link sneers, he still wields the darker half of the master sword, older link does not... still with courage and every ounce of strength he possesses in his frail body, he fights his darkest enemy one last time without his sacred blade.. He fights Valiantly and with every breath he has left but alas... With one final blow to Links Torso, Dark link finishes him in the most brutal fashion; eviscerating his body in half... His body lies in the Lost woods. Lost and Forgotten.

But here's the thing. He had to look for Navi because she was the only one who shared memories of their adventures together with him.
When he went back in time, he undid his whole adventure by warning Zelda and preventing Ganondorf from taking over.
He now had memories of a journey he'd once completed yet would never get to go on, and great battles he'd once fought yet would never get to fight. His life was now full of regret.
At least in the adult timeline, the hero had done all of those great deeds. But in the child timeline, they were all undone.

I think the armor was customized as an offshoot for him specifically in old hyrule due to becoming king of hyrule, and more than likely the general at some point. That would explain why theres unidentified markings, being of old hyrule post-majoras mask/OOT, and pre-twilight princess, it has changed over the years and theres still similarities between his armor and the hylian knights.

He once again freed Dodongo's Cavern of any threats and Lord Jabu Jabu of his parasites, and he killed all 100 Gold Skulltula's too. Later in life, he became an explorer, discovering what would be known as Snowpeak and setting up a fortress there for his legion of soldiers, but later the fortress was bought by wealthy family with close ties to the Royal Family. He eventually a royal knight before settling down in Lon Lon Ranch. In one battle he lost his eye. The Gerudo Hylian war destroyed much of Hyrule's original castle town location. As Hyrule expanded and the Deku Tree remained deceased, the forest lost the enchantment it once held, and the Kokiri were driven from their homes as the Hylians began to settle. The hero sought to protect the place of his childhood, but the country he saved had betrayed him.
His children held no interest in combat. They preferred the simple life. In old age, he planted the howling stones around Hyrule. He destroyed the Ocarina of Time to prevent Ganondorf or another vile person from potentially taking it. He gave his Hero's Bow to the Gorons. The Lost Woods eventually grew over Lon Lon Ranch, the original castle town, and the Temple of Time, and it was renamed Faron Woods and Ordona.
He died in the forest in the exact location the Golden Wolf first appears in front of the remains of the Great Deku Tree, now called Faron Temple, reminiscing of the life that was taken from him, at peace with the fact that he could now live out his life without the burden placed upon him of being a hero, but regretful that he was forgotten and even betrayed by the world he saved, and in a way, doomed as well. He tasked his old friend Skull Kid with guarding the Master Sword.
Finally, he rested in front of his father, the Deku Tree, in the same location he once sat in when his adventure first began. He thought of Navi and Tatl, two of his fairy friends who helped him so much, of Zelda, of his friend Saria, his sworn brother Darunia, his wife in another time Ruto, the brave old attendant Impa, and the brash and beautiful Nabooru. He thought of his beloved horse Epona from his early life. He thought of Malon, his beloved wife. He thought of the time period and parallel world he left behind and if they would ever need him. But that wasn't his worry anymore. This new timeline would need him, and he would be prepared this time. If Ganondorf, the man who took his childhood and everything away from him were to ever return like he expected, he would find a way to kill him, and properly this time. He did find a way, through the last descendant of his bloodline.

I've got a different theory: it was a Darknut (perhaps several).
First of all, we can agree that the Hero of Time was pretty formidable, and probably stayed that way as he got older, even if he did lose a step or two.
Second of all, we can agree that not many enemies would really have fazed him, outside of bosses.
    Except for one: the Darknuts.
There've been a few theories about the Darknuts in Twilight Princess, and one of them is that they were essentially created as superpowered bodyguards for the Royal Family - explaining what they're doing guarding the Dominion Rod (a very important royal artefact) and in Hyrule Castle. The later appearances of the Darknuts in the game, in Hyrule Castle, also have some resemblance to the armour of the Hero's Shade, particularly the helmet and the shield. Perhaps they were modelled on a fully grown Hero of Time; Zelda would probably see him as her go-to hero. Either something went wrong, and they went rogue, or they were always evil to begin with. Either way, one (or several) of them may have killed the Hero of Time when he was a relatively old man. Considering how formidable they are, and the fact that the Hero's Shade is notably missing an eye (suggesting a lack of depth perception), it's certainly plausible, and probably more so than any other recurring enemy doing so other than by an insanely lucky shot through the eyeball (again, the Hero's Shade is missing an eye). Another villain could have popped up, but for the sake of simplicity, let's ignore that.
Supporting this, several of the Hidden Skills that the Hero's Shade teaches Link are directly relevant to fighting the Darknuts: as early as the third one, he makes a very specific point about fighting fully armoured enemies, and teaches Link the Back-Slice. This is despite the fact that the lesson comes after the Goron Mines, and before the Lakebed Temple - the second and third dungeons, respectively. While a fairly useful move in general, especially against King Bulbin in the Gerudo Desert and later on, it doesn't really come into its own until you're faced with an armoured, sword-wielding enemy - a Darknut. That doesn't happen until the Temple of Time, which isn't the first, second, or even third dungeon after the Goron Mines, but the FOURTH.
And that's not the end of it. Immediately after the Back-Slice, the next move he teaches you is the Helm-Splitter, a move also most relevant against armoured swordsmen, like, again, Darknuts. This one is just before the Arbiter's Grounds, the fourth Dungeon, as is the next one, the Mortal Draw - also, to a lesser extent, mainly relevant against powerful enemies like the Darknuts, and perfect for dealing with their unarmoured forms. Again, these apply well to the likes of King Bulbin, and to some other more powerful mook level opponents, but they're practically designed for the one enemy of that type to really return from Ocarina of Time: Darknuts.
The Hero's Shade makes sure to hammer all three of those techniques in, before moving back onto more general and frankly, less complex, techniques (the first two were the Ending Blow and the Shield Bash) and the last two are the Jump Strike and the Great Spin - ideal for dealing with large numbers of lesser enemies. It's almost as if he has a very particular set of priorities, and he's dead-set on not just training his descendant in his skills and making sure masters them, but on a very particular set of those skills as quickly as possible, because he's acutely aware that while other enemies can be beaten with basic swordsmanship and clever use of items, you really need to know your stuff with a sword when fighting a Darknut (or indeed Ganondorf). He really, REALLY seems to have a thing about heavily armoured, sword-wielding enemies and teaching his descendant how best to protect himself from them, so he'll have maximum practice before finally facing them. Like, say, Darknuts. All of which can be explained by the fact that one - or several, working together - killed him. By the way, this would also explain the very large gap in his armour - a Darknut is certainly large enough and strong enough to take out the significant gap in his armour.

Darknuts have 2 attacks. A fierce downwards axe smash and a double horizontal slice. The first one could have cut the left (horn?) side of the hero's shade helmet and the second attack could have sadly cut him in half. Maybe also the vertical attack also got his eye, making him blind to the horizontal slice coming from the right and unable to avoid it leading to his demise.
Also and I just saw this after I posted this comment, look at his shield and where it's cracked. If he would hold it upright it was blocking a strong attack coming from above. The fierce downwards axe smash! He couldn't completely defend himself from it and possibly how he lost his eye.

My thought was, Link and Zelda may not have agreed with this and may even have fought against such actions. What if Link died freeing the Gerudo and helping Zelda take the throne so she could stop the would be genocide.

If you look at how the shade holds his shield up in combat the crack that’s on it lines up with the missing piece of his helm. The pauldren on his left as well as his whole body when he stands at rest looks to have crumpled in on that side possibly hinting at a huge slash that hit him from helm through the pauldren gap into shield. Maybe a jumping slash from the shade or something with a similar north to south motion?

It's also entirely possible that OoT Link never found peace after returning to his child form (as explored in Majora's Mask) and lost himself in battle, eventually dying a great hero. His only regret being he couldn't pass on his lifetime of sword mastery. This can be shown in two points in two timelines, with the hero's return in TP, there was no sword master (orca) to teach the techniques. However in the timeline where the hero did not return, Orca teaches very similar if not identical techniques to the Hero's Shade, however there is no shade in this timeline, implying that he was able to pass down the techniques to vanquish evil eventually reaching the old swordmaster. (That is the killing strike to Ganon in WW after all)
Song of healing is, oddly, one of the songs you do learn from the shade, however it does not heal him as he knows Ganon will forever return, even further reinforcing his unwillingness to pass on.
And on a final note, "You have at last mastered all of the hidden skills. Although I accepted life as the hero, I could not convey the lessons of that life to those who came after. At last, I have eased those regrets." This does not imply an early death, just the unwillingness to learn or to teach from either link or his children.
But the real truth is nostalgic game design to ramp up sales.

Good observations. To further go about this theory you can see his chainmail on his leg is tattered. Normal chainmail is linked and it has many many links, a sword cannot puncture through chainmail easily and even then it would not cause a huge chunk of chain to fall apart like that. Even if the chainmail rusted and got brittle on it’s own, there would be much much more chainmail like it torn in multiple segments throughout his body, not to mention it would have a brownish texture. But not that chainmail, it’s still has its grayish color. Judging from the looks it appears to be sliced in a V shape of sorts. A normal sword would not be able to get such a clean cut like that to chainmail. In facts the sword itself would be damaged far more than the chainmail from the blow, so if he did have to fight someone or something it would have to be with either an extremely sharp blade/claw, or a magic infused weapon. This goes further into the theory of dark link if dark link posses the sword of time that might be the magical kick the weapon needed to slice through chainmail easily, even then a blow like that would probably demolish links leg. So that could also have lead to his demise as you see his shield has a crack at the bottom with a piece missing. This is an interesting indication that he actually did indeed fight somebody, and judging from the angle of the crack it’s safe to assume that’s the starting point of impact. To create a crack like that in that specific direction means whomever he was fighting had to also be extremely powerful to force any weapon down onto his shield to make said crack. This ties into the “killing blow to the abdomen” and how the scenario might've taken place. Our hero of time went to a heavily wooded area to confront his darkness, one last time. The darkness was overpowering, causing our hero to be backed against a thick tree. Out of options our hero prepares for the darkness to strike and he hits a low blow gashing out our heroes leg. Weakened our hero falls on one good knee as the darkness jumps slicing downwards towards our hero, he raises his shield one last time and the blade swoops down through the bottom of the shield causing the crack in the shield, our hero goes for a jab with his sword but as he misses and the darkness lunges back this time hitting his dead in his eye. Blinded and weakened our hero frantically tries swinging in random directions, that’s when the darkness comes in for one last thrust, straight through his abdomen. Our hero falls against the tree, looking up at the leafs falling from the tree due to the impact of his body hitting it, small shimmers of light shine through the leafs as they fall onto our hero, he draws his final breaths as he closes his one good eye shut, leafs continue falling onto him until he’s buried in them. No body was ever found. The impact from his body hitting the tree also caused his helmet to rattle and crack his spike.
And that’s the gist of it.

    Just a few thoughts
Firstly, I believe the Red eye is simply more artistic freedom to imply that Link is left handed, tbh.
The leaves/moss on his armor is either simply allusion to the fact that this is OOT Link because he was closely related to the forest as a form of symbolism that we so often see in the Zelda Series, or more that when OOT Link passed away, he would >want< to spend his final moments in the place most dear to his heart. The place that felt most like home. I fully believe that if he knew it was his time, he would have brought himself to the front steps of the Forest Temple, sat exactly where he had learned Sarias' Song from his first closest friend, and passed away there either to feel the comfort of being in a familiar place or maybe even seeking a final moment of council and comfort from an old friend in one of those "If you can hear me old friend, I have some things I need to say" type moments.
Remember what Saria told him in front of the Forest Temple : "This place will be very important for the both of us someday. That's what I feel. "
She goes on to say : "If you play the Ocarina here, you can talk with the spirits of the forest."
To me, it feels like a circle for that moment - The place he learned something very important in regards to his upcoming trials from one of his dearest friends ends up being where he goes in his final moments for comfort, for peace, for reassurance, and to perhaps take a moment to speak to the spirits of the forest that he grew up in as a child. Maybe he went there in his old age to pass in peace. Maybe he was wounded, bleeding out, fatally injured, but dug down and found the strength to venture there to spend his final moments. We may not know what condition he was in when he got there, but I fully believe that's where he passed away.
And remember - If you become Lost in the Lost Woods, you are destined to become a Stalfos.

Personally i aslo think 2 of em grew a trusting friendship ship that seems to live truly throughout time. After all the games Skull kid plays with link in the end he was either messing around/playing with Link or helping. In twilight princess skull kid seems to just want quality time with that old buddy that showed em that someone was hear the whole time that understood the feelings so like a true friend skull kid's there to help u in a difficult time/ in twilight princess. P.s do we know if the mask has side effects/ the game did say that majora's mask was used for ceremonial rituals so that means no 1 wore it for to long? Except when skull kid did, plus if that is still the same skull kid and the mask changed skull kids soul, or being or whatever it is, then that would explain why skull kid is still alive today maybe and, this is a BIG AND. The only explanation my brain can come up with that's even remotely sane, is that in the adult timeline, someone somewhere somehow altered reality and created another timeline. Maybe when link woke up in the sage realm in the church something happened, or ganondorf used some dark magic somewhere in the realm that splitted realities. IDK

  • @HylianLuke
    @HylianLuke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +651

I like this theory. It's interesting and takes a spin on who the Hero's Shade is. My thoughts:
It was to my understanding that the reason the Hero's Shade had regrets was because he never got to live a normal life. In the adult timeline he saved the world from Ganon's reign and in the child timeline he ran off never to return in search of Navi after causing a war to breakout. In the final credits scene in Ocarina of Time, according to Hyrule Historia when Link re-visits Zelda with his newfound knowledge he warns Zelda and the King of Hyrule about Ganondorf's plan to take over Hyrule. He shows them the Triforce of Courage that traveled back in time with him as proof he was to be taken seriously. This is what led to Ganondorf's execution in Twilight Princess. By extension, the Hero of Time feels he'll never be recognized as a hero because again, he saved the world in the adult timeline only for that timeline to be forgotten and in his present time had caused a war. By teaching Link in Twilight Princess the new sword techniques he founded, he is by extension saving Hyrule through his decedent.
When you brought up that Link in Twilight Princess is Ocarina of Time Link's decadent because he "carries the blood of the hero" I do not think he meant a literal biological connection between the Hero of Time and the Hero of Twilight. Remember, not all Link's are connected through direct bloodline but all reincarnations of Link carry the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero. However, you still have your proof that Link in Twilight Princess is the decadent of Ocarina of Time Link because after learning all the sword techniques, the Hero's Shade says "Do not falter, my child!" before leaving you for the last time.
Lastly, I liked your thoughts about where the Hero of Time may possibly lie after passing away. Here are mine: In the Hyrule Castle graveyard there is a stone that says "The cursed swordsman... sleeps before... the sacred tree". Dissecting this, I believe that the "cursed swordsman" mentioned on the stone is the Hero of Time, the "sleeps before" relates to the swordsman being buried, and the "sacred tree" can mean either the tree that is in the Castle graveyard or it relates to the Great Deku Tree. Either way, this makes perfect sense. The leaves you mentioned on the Hero's Shade's armor could be representation of how he was buried beneath a tree. Location wise these both make sense. If the Hero of Time was buried under the tree in the Castle graveyard, then it would explain why Wolf Link can 'sense' other fallen soldier's souls circling a part of the ground beneath the tree. Despite the soldiers being visual queues to the player to help solve the puzzle here, it is almost as if these soldiers are paying eternal respect to another who committed an incredible task. It'd be one thing if it was a typical soldier captain or whatever- but the soldiers in Twilight Princess are armed with spears and can be seen in several in game cutscenes as well as during gameplay. However, the stone said "swordsman" meaning it was a person who wielded a sword. Being the Hero of Time it would also make sense for the Kingdom of Hyrule to bury their hero in their Castle graveyard as a sign of rank and respect as well.
The other idea I had about it was that the "sacred tree" would have been the Great Deku Tree. Much more simplistic but makes a lot of sense when you think about Ocarina of Time Link. He grew up with the Great Deku Tree as a guardian for him. Being buried under the Great Deku Tree would make sense because it is where Link used to live. Kokiri Forest is his home.
If you took the time to read this I applaud you. Lemme know what you think of my thoughts and whatnot. Again, great theory! I enjoyed the whole thing. :)

HylianLuke I love your take on this! After the leaves were pointed out, I wondered if an injured Link made it back to the Great Deku Tree for his final breath. It would be very sweet, with the connection they had. The Castle graveyard would make sense though if they were honoring him. I personally think “Do not falter, my child!” does not confirm that they are directly related, because oftentimes teachers/mentors would refer to students as “my child,” however, it is confirmed that TP Link is the son of a farmer and it is commonly believed that OoT Link and Malon ended up together, so that connection would make sense. As far as the “my child,” thing goes, that’s just my personal opinion - for all we know the Hero’s Shade could have literally meant that this Link is his child. Overall, love your ideas and the time you took to explain them. Also, well done MaskedNintendoBandit, another wonderful theory. Twilight Princess has a lot of nostalgia for me so I felt like a little kid again watching this excellent theory :)

Wow! Thanks for all that. The video had some nice prospects. I think I got caught up in my own thoughts and theories and it made me forget all these actual in game details. And now..... I wouldn't straight up and say this is how he died but the fact that he doesn't have a scar on his eye indicates that his eye was stabbed in someway. So maybe he was killed with that initial stab to his head? Also just the fact that he was wearing armor tells us he was on duty. Not to mention, if he died in armor then it wouldn't be from old age unless he decided to put his armor on before he died. I think it's safe to say he was either fighting for or defending hyrule at the time of his death.

Head cannon: he died naturally. After events of MM he just lead the knights of hyrule to protect the kingdom, but his soul could never pass on to the afterlife because that incarnation of ganondorf never died, just got sealed away.
As a result, oot links soul stayed in limbo until next incarnation of link came along to finish what he started
I like to imagine that each incarnation of link is bound to a purpose (which is kind of implied in some games) and so oot link never killing ganondorf is kind of unfinished business for him
