Ghbdtn! or Привет! if I switch to Russian keyboard. I'm happy that I found you! So friendly, cozy like home, atmosphere!
When you said that you like small books, that it's seems cute to you I remembered the last bookshelves rearrangement, which was yesterday's night, and the tiny book of Dubrovskyi by Alexander Pushkin. It amaze you by the design unusual for that old years (that are late 80s): framing of text on pages, even sepia pictures, and a minimalistic book cover. Despite I know you literally a few minutes, I'm sure you would love it! How can anybody not love it!? It's soooo cute!
And then you say that you would love to learn Russian... And the portrait of Pushkin on the shelf... When there are so many coinsidents, one says: "Случайности не случайны", what is often true for me. So I'm looking forward to know you better.

Thank you, Carolyn, for the lovely video. Tip for your Van-Gogh-as-as-reader video: not only was he a brilliant painter, he was also a gifted letter writer. In his letters he often comments on the books he’s reading. He also says how much he loves books. By the way, that book about Vincent’s books is great. Greetings from the Netherlands.

If you're looking into reading WWII books, I would recommend Maus by Art Spiegelman. It's a 2 part graphic novel detailing the author's father's time during the war in the concentration camps. The unique thing about it is that different types of people are represented as different animals. For example: Jews are represented as mice, Nazis as cats, non- Nazi Germans as pigs, etc. It's an interesting take on the genre and the artwork is nice as well. Also, Willow is so precious!

I know Anne of Green Gables is Lucy's "flagship" and I myself enjoy the books and the original series with Megan Follows very much. But the Blue Castle is my favorite Lucy's book. I read it every year (more than 20 years already), I just finished this year's read about a week ago! Its adorable, funny and a little bit sad at the same time. I wish more people will discover this gem, in my country (Slovakia) almost nobody heard about it, although Anne is megapopular here. Our edition has different name, it was published as "Osudný omyl" (translated back to english "A fateful mistake").

The Blue Castle is so wonderful! I've read it three times this year because I loved it so much. Also a huge Dostoevsky fan and have started learning Russian with the goal of reading his novels in the original language.

That is a fine translation of "Quiet Flows the Don", a fascinating look at the Don Cossacks. It will be well worth your time to read it, however long it takes😁. With regard to WW2, "The Light of Days" by Judy Batalion, is both heartbreaking and uplifting telling the story of women fighters of the Jewish Resistance in Poland during the Nazi occupation. It describes the amazing courage and resilience of young women in their late teens and twenties fighting and unfortunately dying for their beliefs. It is mainly centered on a small number of women who survived or left personal accounts.

I recently found your channel as I was getting back in to annotating books and your lovely video was recommended to me.
Oh my heart, the Beatrix Potter book is one of my favorites. My copy is all worn out but I don't care; I have so much love for this book. It really lets you see beyond the author and illustrator she was and truly understand the connection she had with nature - gosh, I'm so happy for you that you get to read it for the very first time!
Also, I hope your arm feels better! It made me giggle as I recognize that feeling when leaving a bookshop - happy but also a bit numb in my arm ♡

I've been wanting that Penguin Christmas stories book! The Dostoevsky story they've picked is so grim and awkward and unchristmassy (as you'd imagine from him) 😂 but I've only read The Fir Tree apart from that, would love to hear what you thought of the others, particularly the Calvino, Saki, Chekhov and Dylan Thomas cos they're my boys

20:52 i wouldn't say it's a dutch classic as it was written by an american author, it's only based in the netherlands. however it does sound interesting! if you'd ever like to read a classic by a dutch author i'd recommend 'the discovery of heaven' by Harry Mulisch, or, since you enjoy world war II fiction 'the assault' by Harry Mulisch

I loved this video so much ! I would definitely read Vincent Van Gogh And The Writers Who Influenced him first, it just sounds so fascinating! I've just finished reading Letters To Father Christmas by J.R.R Tolkein and it was beautiful! I'm currently reading , The Life And Adventures Of Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum and I would thoroughly recommend it. Now that my university exams are over and I just have work I have more time to read and I'm getting a jump start on my holiday reading. 🙂 Have you read much Tolkein? Can you recommend any of his other books or any holiday reads in general? I 'm always after recommendations.

I went to a wonderful exhibition this year called Van Gogh Alive. It's his paintings that have been digitally remastered and they are all around on the walls floors moving and amongst it is some of his writing, his letters. It was incredibly immersive and moving experience. And it did make me want to read his writing, probably the black penguin classics edition of The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh. It resonates with what you were saying in this video; I'd only ever known Van Gogh as an artist but at that exhibition I was blown away with his writing too :)

since you speak about how as a "modern person" somethings, like prisons and wars, in past were "baffling" and "shocking" especially as to how they they happened, i will just say, such things still go on.
for instance, as far as prisons go, current usa have the largest ever prison population ever to exist on earth, both in absolute numbers, and percentage to population terms. and disproportionate percentage of them are people of color. also millions of people have died in wars since 2000, most in wars instigated by usa.
