    oh god... I took Cait there. The guy with the Fatman may have fallen of the roof after getting shot. because after the firefight, I turn around and was horrified to see Cait running towards me armed with the Fatman... I panicked and ran away, forgetting that she'd follow me...

      Loud Cheetah Typical, another missed opportunity by BGS to add more lore into the franchise. I would have liked to see/hear/read about what went on there, perhaps find out more about the gunners and how they came about, since they're obviously more than just raiders. I admit, I was also confused about the story, but I came to a different conclusion. I thought that maybe captain Wes had PTSD or pehaps had lost one too many patrols to the wasteland, and so that's why he was being so cautious. Plan a tactical raid on supermutants is okay, but an ambush? Pull out. Raiders in the neighboring town? Infiltrate, observe, disrupt, instead of attack. Wes didn't want to loose any more men. But, like you said, he couldn't afford to look weak.

    Fair enough theory. From the perspective of a soldier I have another one...or three. Command isn't easy, the gunners are the closest to an actual military structure of any other faction... If they put their effort behind an actual cause it would be scary. Imagine for a moment that they had joined the minutemen at Quincy instead of killing them. the Minutemen would be a force to be reckoned with.
    Wes had certain expectations placed upon him as leader of the gunners. but at the same time when caught in the moment that might have just been a simple decision of making a responsible command Decision. a good Commander never throws away confidence soldiers without a good reason. that being said, if you were in the US military he probably would be commended for his action. but because the Gunners have a bit skewed ideas of what they have adapted from the US Military he realized he had to CYA (cover your a$$) fast. This is probably why He then publicly reprimanded his soldiers, and then gave them a relatively cheap punishment. He had to do something to protect his command, but he really didn't want to bring the hammer down on soldiers for following orders. "Reaming" is a common term for being yelled at by a superior, it may have other connotations, but I would not read too much into that.
    Last thing I am going to say on the subject is, don't underestimate the punishment. Though it is not a bad place to be, no good soldier likes being pulled from an assignment to be reassigned. It is that much worse when we are getting blamed for our superior's actions. A soldier, no matter how loyal, hates falling on the sword for someone else... even though they will do it if necessary. Wes would have probably made the guard duty temporary, and then put the gunners back in the field after the fuss died down.

    • @chrisrushing5930
      @chrisrushing5930 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It also depends on who was attacking... If it were the raiders, he may not have wanted to have a confrontation with the undercover gunners... But the soldiers made no mention of who they were gonna attack, or who was ambushing them

  • @vahlen5281
    @vahlen5281 7 ปีที่แล้ว +232

    I always wondered why the Gunners are hostile towards the player. Aside from a few random encounters, they will always attack you on sight. Which does not make much sense, the Gunners are not a Raider gang, they are mercenarys for hire first and foremost. They have some agenda of their own, but mostly, they are fullfilling contracts (for example, trying to get the Gas from HalluciGen, delivering the Deathclaw egg to Wellington and so on). So they should not really have a reason to attack the protagonist on sight if he/she does not provoke them.
    Of course you could say, maybe someone paid them to do so. The problem with this is that there is no ingame evidence (like the Talon Mercenaries who carried a killing contract in F3, they hunted you because someone set a bounty on your head after you either disarmed the bomb in Megaton or your karma level got too high) so aside from being convenient, this explanation is not really valid.
    So I guess Bethesda made them a hostile faction for gameplay reasons and for the sake of enemy variety, but it does not make sense lorewise nor is it logical. I would have loved to see Bethesda implementing the Gunners as a joinable minor faction, even if it simply meant that more radiant quests would flood your Pipboy...
    Well, at least they know how to use their laser rifles and do not combine them with an antique, outdated and ineffcient firing system in form of a musket like some certain faction does...

    "Why else would there be a man in military fatigues in here?" Not to discredit that galaxy news was in the pocket of the government, but you wouldn't need a military personnel to dictate propaganda. In fact that would be a rather bad idea. More appropriately the military fatigued man in the bathroom was probably a military journalist.
    Also, Wez fucking Cruz is a bit of a stretch and when a soldier uses the word "reaming" they do not mean the secondary part of that dictionary, they used the First definition.

    Based on my experience in the military, some commanders fear their subordinates will overtake them at some point in their career and they try to sabotage their rivals in some way. in this case, Cruz may have been an extremely competent leader that was becoming popular with the rank and file. Commanders in mercenary and pirate outfits throughout history were replaced by former subordinates that could actually deliver. There is a good chance that a rivalry was brewing and Wes took action to take Cruz down a few notches. Guard duty sounds cushy, but in an outfit that thrives on elan, it would be a nail in his careers coffin. Everyone hailed the pilots heroism after the battle of Midway, but you didn't hear a lot about the maintenence crews, ordnance teams, and deck officers of the task force that enabled the pilots success. The guy watching over the base will never haul in loot or win a great battle.

  • @Bluesit32
    @Bluesit32 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I came to the same conclusion. Nothing else makes sense. The fact that Cruz has no idea what's going on makes them being related highly unlikely. He's as confused as anyone else about why he's being blamed and why he's being "punished" with a less dangerous task. Clearly Wes is protecting him for some reason. Who knows, maybe Cruz just reminds Wes of a brother who died growing up in the Commonwealth...but that seems a bit of a stretch.

    • @marktaylor6553
      @marktaylor6553 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If Wes was a LOT older than Cruz, he may have been his father, the mother may have been another 'young cadet' with him that he was in love with, who got killed in action soon after giving birth. the kid gets raised by the Gunners, but he has no idea who his father is. Not saying that's the truth, just saying its possible. Now why keep that secret? Well now... what if Wes was a lot older than the girl - like she was only 15 at the time, and also happened to be his CO's daughter? There's some great ways to flesh this out without going down the 'dark' path. LOL

I thought they would work well as an alternate to the minutemen, especially with the business in Quincy. In my current play through, I have a mod that allows me to throw spawn grenades, so I carry spawn grenades that allow me to spawn minutemen to aid me in battle. I also have a mod that gives every NPC labeled as a minuteman a set of "Minuteman Dog Tags." With that in mind, I have been waging a war against the Gunners in multiple areas. When time finally came, I assaulted Gunner Plaza. Myself and Preston Garvey set out in a vertibird that the minutemen salvaged after the war with the brotherhood. Preston and I flew over the plaza raining minigun fire on the gunners below, taking fire all the while, we landed about 100 meters from the building and our pilot high tailed it back to friendly lines. I immediately launched a flare to signal our attack and called any nearby minutemen. With the call sent out, I run up to the hedgerows across the street from the plaza and toss an artillery smoke grenade. Shells from Egret Tours Marina and Summerset place and Murkwater Construction all start raining in. One after another. Just as the last shell hits, a squad of militia arrive, responding to the flare. Now I brought 150 minutemen with me, now we have another 4 on the assault. The gunners outside took a hell of beating thus far, but theres still about half a dozen scattered on the building. The responding minutemen hold the front while preston and I clear the roof top. At this point we managed to secure a powerful Guass rifle prototype that will prove useful, Shaw will flip when she gets a hold of it. After securing the outside move into the main lobby. Myself, Preston, and about 15 minutemen make the first volley, both machinegun turrets are knocked out, but the gunners are well armed, we start taking heavy fire so I pull my people back and toss some grenades. After I take out a few with grenades and sniper fire, another wave plus the remainder of the first charge in and start making a foothold in the writer rotunda. It isnt long before theres a full platoons worth of minutemen pushing through. We are making progress, but theres no direct route to the second floor. So 20 minutemen stay on the bottom floor of the rotunda to keep the gunners occupied while I lead the rest of my forces through the building. Immediately after the rotunda, we come to a choke point. They were ready for an assault, we took cover and advanced slowly, but the fire was intense. A minuteman with an assault rifle he'd picked up from a gunner began to open fire and keep cover fire while we advanced, quickly the left and then the right turrets exploded. Green plasma from the gunner officers still spilled it's way towards us, we pushed until we had broken through. We now had the central office surrounded, we knew Captain Wes was inside and well defended. We kicked the door in with the solid thump, two more turrets opened up on us, we were taking casualties, so collectively we all started throwing molotovs. One after another, and finally the turrets seized and the gunners weren't firing. Wes sat wounded in the corner, we had hoped to take him alive and put him on trial for his crimes against the people of the commonwealth, but it was too late. He wouldn't survive his injuries, so I granted him a mercy he would never have extended to one of ours, and I put my rifle to his head and ended his suffering. For a moment, it was somber, but then a shout and blast of bullets brought me back to my senses, the second floor still had gunners on it. I rallied my forces and pushed through to the stairs. Two more gunners held the stairs from us, we took cover when a Sergeant yelled that we were losing men in the rotunda, I sent 15 back to reinforce them, but that hurt my advance, we had to move while we had momentum. Preston laid down fire from his laser musket while I charged forward to the stairs. Flanked by 3 minutemen, I lead the assault and the stairs were ours, I popped off the last turret down the hall before we came into range, we've lost enough men to their turrets. We started to move but then a lone gunner with a plasma rifle holds his position and fires at us. One by one we took casualties. Finally preston managed to make the kill shot. We ran for the rotunda and found the last squad of gunners frantically firing at our men below. They were so focused that they didnt even notice us, I gave the word to fire and they all dropped in an instance, all of them had already been injured by our men below. With that, the battlefield fell silent. The troops patrolled the plaza while preston and I search for our casualties. I collected their tags for safe keeping at the Castle. When all was said and done. Of the 150 minutemen and 4 responding militia who arrived at gunners plaza under my command, 31 were confirmed dead and 17 were never found. It was a costly battle for such a small force of enemies. They were entrenched and used every advantage they had. With the plaza down, on Quincy and a few locations in Downtown remain in gunner control. Soon that will be rectified as well. But not today. Today is a sobering day for the minutemen. A ceremony is going to be held at the castle to honor the 48 minutemen killed or missing with their names spread to Diamond City, Bunker Hill, and Goodneighbor so that the news will spread of their sacrifice. The gunners have lost valuable leadership and countless resources. The gunner weapons and armor will be distributed amongst diamond city security and the Neighborhood watch as compensation for assistance in training our people. Whatever remains will be put in the armory for issuing to the troops. The clothing, food, and other valuables will be sold on the open market, whatever doesn't sell will either be given to whoever wants it or scrapped for building materials. I've ordered the place to be booby trapped with mines and trip wires to prevent the gunners from moving back in. I've even had 3 turrets rebuilt from the fight and reprogrammed to fire at gunners instead of us. I dont want to keep any troops here, we need everyone we can gene hopefully this will end soon. The first meeting of the CPG is next month, and we need to make sure the commonwealth is secure before then. I've had sentry bots and protections establishing safe routes between the major settlements for months now. It's been a bloody and difficult time. The commonwealth might finally have peace again after such a long time.
    -Nate, General of the minutemen, just after the gunner wars and just prior to the founding of the CPG in 2296.

    I think homosexual feelings are a tremendous reach lol. The evidence is right in front of you on the previous terminal you read as well as in previous videos you made. Wes isn't running his operation like a Gunner because he's using espionage and subterfuge to win battles because fighting and working smart will always be better than fighting and working hard. He had his men infiltrate the Raiders in Hyde Park because a full frontal assault would be costly in terms of manpower and resources because in Fallout 4 Raiders can be as well armed as they are depending on the gang. He had Clint turn against the Minutemen to save the costs in lives and resources a full frontal assault would cost to sack the town the old fashion way. He kidnapped a Synth because he wanted to draw the Courser into a trap aka fighting the enemy on the ground of your choice because that lets you dictate the rhythm of the fight. And he had Cruz retreat because if he and his men get wiped out that means he lost men for little gain. And in the Wastleland boots are far harder to come by than bullets. Especially well trained boots. The cost of recruiting and training new men to replace the men he lost wasn't worth the effort so he had them retreat in secret. This hints that Wes is, well was, likely planning to change the tactics of the Gunners to increase their power base and make them a more effective fighting force because Death or Glory behavior is not something that can be maintained in the long run.

    I have a decidedly different theory. Despite being a mercenary group, a lot of the time in game they're depicted as being no better than raiders. I believe Wes may have feared Cruz as a potential competitor for command, ordering him to do something that would disgrace him, and then subsequently punishing him with a safe posting where Cruz would be unlikely to earn any accolades.

  • @Vyper08

    I think the reason for the US army presence in the Plaza isn't just because they were using it as a means to spread propaganda, but after the bombs dropped they used it as a meeting spot. In those cubicles when you frost entered there's a large amount of medical supplies and gurneys. My theory is when the bombs dropped and chaos ensued, the US army met up at the plaza and used it as a form of base so thy could figure out what to do. And while they were there they set up a hospital for any injured soldiers either from radiation poisoning or injuries received from raiders.

After taking the elevator down you can clear out the basement and get into the first floor of the main hall to take out Cruz and wes while covered from the turrets and gunners below

    Awesome, I've been wanting more people to look into the gunners for forever. I think it would be really cool if the Gunners' origins come from the Vault that engineered children to be super human. I think it makes alot of sense with how much tactical old world military knowledge that they have. As well as knowing what blood types are, and having everyone important with a tattoo of their blood type. It would make a lot of sense with the children's upbringing as well, along the lines of the children originally wanting to help people, but after seeing what reality is like they turned to mercenary work.

    Okay, your speculation is a tad off the rails. Obviously, it is speculation, but there's no reason to believe Wes was in love with Cruz. This is what I think:
    Wes realizes Cruz and his squad are in danger. Wes, and the Gunners as a whole are relatively smart- "Never retreat" is a rule meant to encourage blind loyalty from his underlings, not to restrict his own tactical decisions. He decides, from that radio broadcast, that the best thing to do is to get Cruz out of there before he and his squad are wiped out. He makes a tactical, calculated decision. He blames Wes for the reasons you mentioned, he can't have his rule broken, but his "punishment" is extremely lax and makes sure that Cruz doesn't feel betrayed by Wes and to keep Wes' secret under wraps (as doing something more extreme probably would've made Cruz tell everyone).
    The story isn't a love story, it's illustrating the way the Gunners differ from your average Raider. Most other Raider factions would've died blindly or scattered in that battle, but Captain Wes is far more utilitarian than that. There's no rules or code in what he does (despite what the Gunners will tell the rookies when they join up), he just does what's the logical and tactical decision, and in this case it was retreat.

      Magatsu Ooyodo Yeah. There is a gay couple in far harbor, and your Sole Survivor is technically bisexual, along with every other romancable character.

    There is another show that plays on the television, but you have to run to the tv right after you create your character. I just discovered that last week.

    That was a stretch. I personally think that they were either brothers or very good friends and were being protective.

    I like your video but most likely that cruz and wes were brothers with wes been the older protective brother

      That was my thought when I listened to all the tapes. Wes acted tough so the rest of the gunners didn't think his brother Cruz got special treatment.

    I like your theory. i have a theory of my own - pertaining to the Gunners in a whole: they are generations of rogue National Guard soldiers who turned into a mercenary/ raider group after thr bombs fell - when they lost control over the civilian population.

    Oxhorn,
    You failed to mention that the building has plenty of frag mines in it. That bit of info is helpful for players who don't have the light step perk. That way they can be prepared for them.

    It would make perfect sense if we found a synth component on Captain Wes. Considering how often the Gunners are found doing work for the Institute.

    I remember watching a video from another channel about a vault in the game. ( I don't remember the number) the one with genetically modified kids. but he said something interesting, theorizing that the kids were the gunners. Because while in the vault the kids wish to be these "Up top land heros", so when they finally rebelled, they did just that. Though as time changed, the descendants have lost the original vision. What supports this somewhat is that the kids were genetically smarter, stronger and faster. And in the Saugus Iron works, there's s terminal from the boss there, describing some of the gunners that did his tests.
