I feel like that was apart of some cut content. Like there was gonna be some kind of quest where Kellogg takes control of Nick and you have to either save nick or put him down, y’know?
Kellogg was a great villain. Mainly because he wasn't evil for the sake of it. He was a jaded merc and all the horrible things he did were impersonal. He had a rough life and from that, a pessimistic view on the world around him. Even with all that he had some sort of moral code or atleast an understanding of one as he obviously regretted killing off one of the parents. Probably because he had a family of his own at one point and understands the pain of losing them.
"The thing about happiness is... you only know you had it when it's gone." Most beautiful quote in the entire Fallout franchise. That and "It just works!"
I like the one where the little girl says something like “the earth was once a pretty glass artwork, but then Destroyed. However, if you combine some of the pieces, you can make a mosaic. That’s what we’re trying to do”. But I see what you mean
Perhaps the best bit about how Kellogg was introduced to us (the players) is that we only got to know him better AFTER we killed him. We didn't get to choose our course of action after learning about someone, letting us ponder our actions after they were done. Which... is nothing short of what real life is.
Kellog is the best FO character ever because he's real, he shows the consequence of horrible parenting and life decisions, the way they did it, as you said was very clever in that, we retroactively get to hear about why he was such a PoS, and it wasn't all his fault. We get the sense of "this world sucks and raises monsters" we reflect on our actions and the thought comes to mind that no, he wasn't just some mindless monster... he was a consequence of the wastelands brutality. Almost a victim, in a sense, in his own right. Then we meet Cait... and instead of her becoming Kellog, she travels the path less traveled, and she is redeemed. This is significant and ties the feelings together in a surprisingly clever and complex way with many variables of when or if we even meet her and follow her story as well.
You know, something interesting about FO4 is that it ties all the games together, largely thanks to Kellog. The formation of the NCR & working for the Shi, which ties the originals and NV in, the BOS and Android quest from FO3 was heavily involved in FO4, etc.. Also Kellogg has probably the best voice actor I’ve heard in any Bethesda game.
"one day, [the sole survivor] asked himself why he ended up in hell. What was he punished for? Then he realized, he wasn't getting punished. He was the punishment"
@@ducite9943 Is that what he says? I always suspected he was planning to ambush you, so I just Fat-man him from across the room, which is literally the only time I use that weapon in the entire game.
Honestly Kellogg was one of my favorite characters. I can’t hate him, because honestly if I were raised like that and put in a situation where it seemed like the world was against me in the post apocalypse, I could see myself possibly going down the same dark path
"The thing about happiness is that you only know you had it when it's gone. I mean, you may think to yourself that you're happy. But you don't really believe it. You focus on the petty bullshit, or the next job, or whatever. It's only looking back by comparison with what comes after that you really understand, that's what happiness felt like." man thats the best line in this whole game.
I think the cliche is "You don't know what you got 'til it's gone." The sentiment is pretty much based around that cliche, but it is well-written, and it is true.
I love how when inside Kellogg's mind, the title given to him when the subtitles show him speaking says 'Me' because we're inside his very mind, and we aren't the 1 identifying these people, his mind is, so of course he'd simply identify himself as 'Me'
Personally, I feel like he's far more tragic than you think. The way he phrases things and structures them, I don't feel like he's excusing himself but rather explaining himself. The whole way through, he sounded regretful to me. Saying the girl he loved deserved better than someone like him, I don't think he was saying that's just how he is but rather that that's who he made himself, and that the fact he chose to be that is what he's berating. Not so much an "oh well" as a kind of deep regret for who he is. I don't think he was making excuses so much as deprecating himself for the choices he made and the person he became. He came off like a decent person who'd allowed himself to become something awful, and hated himself for it. I don't believe he's a coward, but rather a depressed, broken man who's lost his chance at happiness and is resigned to whatever the hell life is going to toss his way next. I'd also like to mention he seemed genuinely regretful of what he did to the sole survivor, and I could swear there was an edge of spite and sarcasm to his comments on having his orders. He tried to let your spouse live, but they struggled too much. He came off like he really didn't want to do it. And he was audibly uncomfortable with the callous behavior of the institute, correcting the scientist when he called shawn "genetic material." I got the impression that his fight with you was a man who was tired of doing evil handing revenge to the person he viewed as his equal as a means of penance and escape. He'd locked himself into a path he no longer viewed as the right decision, and it was the only way he could think of to stop the gears he'd set in motion himself, viewing his own life as a pittance to throw a wrench in the Institute's plans. He stopped valuing himself long ago, so I imagine he wouldn't have cared much about dying, and probably welcomed it.
I cared more about voicing my interpretation, honestly. I don't really care if he's "interested" in what I have to say. Hell, I don't expect he'll even read it. But thank you for the response/word of warning. I personally find his philosophical bias a bit ridiculous, partly because his beliefs strongly mirror my own, but filtered through a black and white lens I can't help but view as slightly childish or simple. I guess he hits a moral uncanny valley for me, but nonetheless I still respect his views and it's honestly just fun to discuss different perspectives.
"attempt to lessen the blame attaching to (a fault or offense); seek to defend or justify." I mean, pretty clear that just about everything Kellogg says is an excuse, not an explanation. Got to agree with Alex here, you're running way too far with the very little humanity Kellogg showed. But calling him a coward is too harsh of a way to put it, a better way is that he was too weak to do anything else.
I called mine Mercenary's End because i disarmed him by smashing his arm with a baseball bat and then blasted his head off with a bullet from his own pistol.
As I've joined the military and gone through the standard mental changes, I've started looking at Kellogg differently. His mother gave him his pistol, and said "the only thing that will protect you is that gun in your hand." He was raised in a home filled with toxicity. When he was with his wife and daughter he brought the "only I can protect myself and my family" logic with him as he gestures with his 44 saying "this is whats going to keep us safe" he had optimism, he truly cared for his family, and then he stepped on a snake. His family was killed and he took revenge, he's like the sole survivor in a way, avenging his family. After that he took whatever merc job needed done if the caps were good enough, he looked back on his life and thought he never deserved the happiness he had, a while later he finds the institute and proves himself worthy of their employment, he does their wetwork eventually taking Shaun and shooting the Sole Survivor's spouse, after the synth program his gen 3 and then the child synth testing, he was assigned to take down Virgil, that's when we take his life. Many players follow much the same path as Kellogg in fallout 4, doing whatever is necessary within their faction, killing non humans in the brotherhood, freeing synths and becoming a saboteur for the railroad, or becoming the director of the institute, and taking the wasteland for testing. We do all of this and yet we are somehow the "good guy" Kellogg did the same as us, even showing remorse, he admitted as much in his memories, but to most he's still the monster, the one to be hunted by Zammiel, the sinner to be punished by the seraph's fury known as the Sole Survivor. We are the same as Kellogg, we just had more of a choice in how we redeemed ourself in the dlc with saving the synths and the harbormen, and in nuka world when we have the opportunity to take the raiders out, letting the merchants turn nuka world into a place of trade. If you as the player took the raider's side in NW, you're just like Kellogg, if you let the harbormen die, you're like Kellogg, if you took revenge on Kellogg for any reason other than getting closer to Shaun, you're like Kellogg. 2 sides of the same coin, he is the beast within, and we are the docile dog without.
I like how Kellogg speaks like he’s reminiscing, like he’s still alive. And then he speaks to you from Nick, also, synth Shaun and Kellogg living together. :(
"Mary this is a .44 mag one of the most powerful handguns in the world, so powerful it could blow our baby's head clean off. So I gotta ask, does she feel lucky?"
I do pity him but he killed my wife, stole our son and everyone else in the cryogenic tanks to die so.... *slaps in a fresh power pack into my las pistol*
I wanted Nick to turn into kelogg for the entirety of the main story and he wanted to work with you after the first time Nick gets haunted but he switches from Nick and kellogg maybe even having a choice in the talk menu to switch personalities after the main story and they have different skills
Kellog feels like such a wasted character. His backstory is so interesting and his character was so compelling. It feels like such a waste that this well-voiced bad guy gets capped so quickly before the story even gets rolling. Disappointing the only way you can resolve the mission is scattering his brain matter. I'd have gladly opted for an incredibly hard charisma check where you can convince him that you ultimately forgive him, and he instead gets a place as a companion or at least gets more glory in the main story.
Why though? Why would you want that? Lol just why? I don't understand these comments, people seem to empathize or pity him far too much. All of the stuff that makes him a good character literally only happens because you blow his brains out, without that he's just another p.o.s you gun down.
I wish that we got more dialogue from Kellog. He seems like an interesting character, and has some interesting backstory to him. He lost his wife and his daughter.
The way I see it is this. In another time. another place, had things been different. Maybe Kellogg would have been a wasteland hero like the vault dweller or sole survivor. He's meant to be a dark reflection of your character. Since you two have very similar pasts. If he was around more it would lessen his impact.
You really should tell the story about the guy who voiced Kellogg. They wouldn't tell any of them what game they were going to be on and someone figured it out strictly on being a huge fallout fan. Really interesting story
I'm re-playing Fallout 4, so I know this is all quite dated now, but I had a theory that I wanted to bounce off of you(if you are even still reading comments on these old videos). I think that Kellogg being assigned to move in with SynthShaun in Diamond City was a calculated psychological attack on Kellogg by Father. Father was reminding Kellogg what it was like to have a family by having him take care of a copy of the child whom he essentially orphaned. He knows the wrath he had for those that killed his family and he had to know that this same vengeance was coming for him, that he had become one of the monsters he slaughtered, and that he deserved to face the justice that he had given to his family's killers. If Kellogg were to ambush the SoleSurvivor using the stealthboy that he has especially when the SoleSurvivor was distracted by turrets and/or G1 Synths, it would be very difficult to survive. But, just as he feared, letting someone in made him soft; soft enough to try to talk with the SoleSurvivor several times instead of taking him out in a brutally efficient professional manner. That's my 2 cents anyways.
While it's an interesting theory(and could very well be valid), I feel like the Kellogg was just too desensitised. Plus, he knew it wasn't a real person, so I don't think it would have made too much of a difference to him.
@@alexrandall8557 Kellogg was heavily augmented where Synths are almost indistinguishable from humans. I feel like that might all be part of it, now that you mention it. A setup that brings him to the logical conclusion that he should die. Something like this: Why protect this kid, he isn't even human. With all the parts I have in me, he's probably more human than I am. Well, lets face it, I stopped being a human long before those eggheads started swapping out my parts. I've done monstrous things like orphan this kid, well, not this copy, but the real one. Now look at him, a zealot for those soulless Institute types that had him abducted.
The part where you explore Kellog's memories is one of my favorite parts of the game. The writing for the character is absolutely amazing, and the voice actor (Keythe Farley) absolutely nailed the part. Even though you only meet him twice, he's one of the more remarkable villains I've ever encountered in gaming.
This was the best bits of the F4 story for me. I like the little detail of Adult Kellogg gradually getting more and more armor as time progresses. Perhaps supposed to indicate his increasing emotional armor, the facade of fatalism he's established. The facade of strength.
it looks to me like Kellogg's character has been modelled like he was the star of the show, with the motion captured synth fight sequence in his memories, and especially the animation in your final encounter with him... the body language in that sequence has been animated with so much character, and the facial animation tech which make other characters look like marionettes instead seems to fit him so personally, it all comes together almost to the level of a TV personality... i dont think any other character in the game gets such a high quality treatment
And I wouldn't say that he is a coward. He is a survivor. There is a slight difference of doing bad things out of heroism/survival instinct than just being an evil person. He isn't evil, but he is a monster. And for his monstrosity he has paid. But he isn't evil
he is a sociopath he feels no remorce he doesn't care who he kills if he gets paid and while he did warn your spouse that wouldn't have mattered to him
and Kellogg is less of a monster than Father, who isn't just responsible for the deaths of many innocents like Kellogg, but the unethical experimentation on all of his victims, their families, torturing synths, that, despite not being human, are definitely intelligent enough to be considered sentient, using them as slaves and nothing else. Sure, Kellogg was a psycho and serial murderer, but he didn't toy with the lives of his victims and their families, torture and enslave artificially intelligent lifeforms, and he doesn't run the biggest asshole faction in the Fallout universe, even worse than Maxson's brotherhood when it comes to anti-ghoul, anti-synth behaviors. The Institute reminds me a lot of the Enclave, and would most likely create a counter-FEV that kills everyone not born in a vault or before the war and not ghoulified, if given the chance.
Kellogg is the type of character that you despise, yet can't keep feel sorry for him. The type of character that you don't condone for what he has done, but can't blame him either.
It always disturbed me that Kellog wasn’t a Legendary enemy. He was truthfully a legend, plus he drop his bad ass outfit and Pistol, and couple of stealth boys and some high-value tech to sell.
You are wrong, he didn't go to Fort Hagen to flee from you, he set up his base there to track down Virgil. All that Institute stuff there tells that story and this is the reason why he didn't run ways, he was cornered in is hideout. Its funny the Kellogg is the most elaborated character in that game, his story is so similar to that of the sole survivor, just that he chose the wrong path.
Yes, he did go to Fort Hagen to prepare to hunt Virgil, but I think he stayed for the Sole Survivor. Better to fight the SS in a fort he controlled than to be ambushed ion the road.
What I don't understand is why did Virgil flee to the Glowing Sea? He said it was somewhere he couldn't be found. But Coursers are immune to radiation and so too it seems is Kellogg if he was preparing to go after him
Gavin Seery I think it's because the Glowing Sea isn't only dangerous because of the radiation, but also because so many dangerous creatures roam that place
Oxhorn I really enjoy your lore and in depth story videos. I’m the kind of player who skips past reading terminals and even conversations so I get get back to the action, so I really find these great. Thanks for your hard work in putting them together. Keep up the good work and keep fighting the good fight.
I dont think he really victimized himself. I think that after he lost everything he cared for he just stopped caring... about everything. I dont think he was trying to run away from his loss either, I doubt he even realised that it was what he was doing until long after. He just focused on earning caps and surviving another day. First time I played I longed for revenge, to kill Kellogg, but since I walked through his memories I dont have the same drive to kill him. I can't help but to see him as some wounded animal. I only do it now (except for quest reasons) to put him out of his misery. My quest for revenge has permanently turned into a quest for mercy
Those are the words of somone who lived in relative paradise before the war. If the Sole Survivor had been born into the same world of Kellogg, you wouldnt have the same attitude towards Kellogg because the world has taught you to be cruel and merciless.
The best villains don't start as villains but are turned into one. Kellogg's a perfect example. Son of a raider and an idiot who had the gall to give a child a Magnum Revolver. That much disfunction has away to create social misfits. Then his wife and duaghter are killed by someone he apparently "fucked with". And since he couldn't do anything else other than killing, his mind eventually became twisted. But he isn't... evil. He's a puppet.
MCPunk55 he is evil he doesn't just do a job he slaughters people and people in the institute hate that but he is so dangerous no one says anything to his facr
@@donnellebarfield3964 he admits he is a puppet in the scene where you confront him. Kellogg is a warm body, who's seen nothing but death and tragedy his whole life, imagine how that'd be for you. A soldier does what is needed or is punished and in fallout it's survival of the fittest.
I have to disagree, Oxhorn. Kellogg isn't scared of the sole survivor at Fort Hagen. The man is a contracted mercenary that has been killing for almost 90 years at this point. He has little to be scared of after all he has likely seen and experienced by this point in his life. Fear is probably something he has conquered long since. I believe he has some pity for the sole survivor, given his reaction to living with the child synth and perhaps it is his memories of this and losing one family that never really was one and then losing one that he truly loved is why he was willing to talk the sole survivor instead of just out and out attacking them in Fort Hagen. He was a man who had very little emotion left and resigned himself to the position of of cog in a machine or a pawn on the chessboard. He probably didn't even care if he really lived or died at this point.
Only one charcter in fallout series is in cannon a female i assume the SS is male but even if its a female this time by the time you meet Kellogg eveyone in the commonwealth knows about SS. White chapel Charlie even says you are dangerous from a combat scan
I know I'm really late to this video, but watching this really makes me re-appreciate how good of an antagonist Kellogg was .. such a tragic character.
I agree with all of your morals Ox. You're a great guy. But I've been a victim of the world around me myself. At 13 I was abandoned by my mother's family during a crisis time. My mother was in prison and the state had custody of me. At any point any of them could have come and gotten me. They're response? "You're mother needs to learn her lesson. You'd be better off." My dad (the hero of my life) drove from Houston Texas to St. George Utah to rescue me. I hated my family and disowned them. It made me bitter. I drank like a fish and found other comforts to ease my trauma. It wasn't until my wife was with child that I turned myself around, and it wasn't until we lost that child that I learned true self control.
I really got to fundamentally disagree with your conclusions about Kellogg. He is not a victim who believes that others are justified to being victimized by being weak. I can see why you would make such a point, but I personally believe that he simply doesn't give a fuck. He suffered so much and went through so much that he simply does not care anymore. He got beaten, punished and such and in the end, he simply went "fuck it"; it is something I can understand. To me, Kellogg is one of the best characters and it is real shame that we can't keep him alive. It is good to stand against horrible things that happened to you and stay good but how many bad guys like that we have for one good person who managed to "remain good"? Kellogg is kinda the character who I feel gets Sole Survivor the most. Wish we could keep him alive and maybe help him feel better. Also, here is another thought: if fools learn only based on their own mistakes, then everyone is a fool. EDIT: Also, kinda disagree at the last bit. The reason why Kellogg gets "scared" is because he knows that your character went through the same thing he did; so he knows that you are dangerous. Not because you have Piper or Nick or BoS but because you hurt. It really sucks how game almost forces you to be rude to him in the moment instead of being like, "Yeah, let's fight it out and see who is better." At the end, his last words, I think, are meant to show that he admits that Sole Survivor is strong.
I think he cares alot. That's part of his constant inner turmoil. He is riddled with guilt. I think he is far far from a "just doesnt give a fuck" type of person.
Yeah, pretty much how I always thought of him. Someone who's just been through so much shit that he really doesn't give a fuck about anything. Everything he gave a fuck about was long gone and getting revenge for his family was the last thing he really gave a shit about. So after that he was just like "Now what?". He never really found anything to care about after that so he just soldiered on... simply tried to exist and survive. Probably wishing someone would smoke him but his survivor's instinct prevented him from committing suicide and his excellent combat prowess kept others from doing it for him for a really, really long time. If he got the chance to spread the pain around here and there along the way, it was just a sick perk of the job.
Kellog wasn't scared. He was *_guilty_*. He murdered yohr spouse and stole your child. He didnt want to also kill you. He was literally underestimating the sole survivor.
Nietzsche's Moustache nope. He needed the family alive. He didn't want to kill the player but simply had too. He knew he ruined ur family and even gives a passionate (like it matters) "damn" when he does, but says "at least we still have the backup" looking at you. They needed u for something..
That something being harvesting, I presume. It really makes me wonder as to why indeed (!!!) they wouldn't refreeze the dwellers? Most of them should've had viable ovi/sperm - couldn't they have had them contained, stored safely until they'd design some artiificial womb device of sorts..?
Георгий Пресняков i think it has something to do with the fact that father started the institute, and there for had to take himself from u, in order to meet u before he dies. And pass on his beliefs. Which I'm sure most of us disagree with.. Idk I forget that game honestly. Wasn't to happy with the gameplay. The scenes and scenarios were half decent. But overall feels like a lackluster, less in depth fallout 3, rebuffed graphics. Yawn
Todd Coward he's a time traveler, he founded kellogg,s to make money den used the tardis to travel foward but the bombs destroyed the tardis and he also reliazed that money became worthless so he became a synth to relive his life
One thing that *really* bothered me throughout this entire video is how you state that "Kellogg excused himself for being evil because the world is evil" or something along those lines with the same meaning. He never excuses himself, heck he even says he is a bad person that doesn't deserve to be happy. He is clearly suffering from more than a few mental issues. That being said, he is outright honest with you. However, he does claim that the world is evil and the he himself is evil. That is his view of the world after everything that has happened with him and the dude has lived a long life, he'll probably have a more extensive view of the world than anyone. Especially when you consider the fact that he has been involved with a lot of groups of people. He's seen a lot of people, people who think differently and act differently. He has without a doubt met beings of pure evil, and beings of pure good. He knows the difference, and he knows that he is incapable of being "good". He believes that his natural place in the world is that of evil. He blames himself constantly, not the world for how things turned out. He used to blame the world, but in his later years, he blames himself.
Luke I couldn't agree more, he is the way he is, and he doesn't think he can change. I'm pretty sure that Kellogg was perfectly content for you to kill him in the end, because he knew as long as he lived he would keep doing what he did
Aaron Brown I wouldn't go that far at all.. 75% of the world's population wouldn't last a week in a Shit Hit The Fan scenario like a nuclear apocalypse. In the Fallout universe, anyone with an extended age seems to take a very polarized view of the world. On one hand, you have Carol from The Underworld who remembers the day the bombs fell, and she's just about the sweetest and most caring person in the game. On the other hand, you have people like Kellogg and Cabot, who see absolutely no value in human life beside their own. You can draw any conclusion you want to about what goes on in the minds of someone with an extended lifespan, but the main point is people weren't meant to live that long. Anyone who maintains a long life span, while still being conscious, will probably have numerous disorders and serious mental flaws. Killing Kellogg was a mercy killing. No different that putting down a dangerous animal. Maybe years ago, he couldn't been rehabilitated, but in the fallout universe there's no such thing as a second chance. He rolled the dice, and he pays the tab that all men owe eventually. Just another story from a sad and broken world... (Edit: changed 'Carol from Underwear' to 'Carol from Underworld' despite comedic value.
TrueFinalBoss OfEverything I can respect the agree to disagree part. And you are right, in the case of Cabot. Perhaps he's not the best example of longevity. But 200 years of conscience is enough to develop a lot of mental issues. It isn't natural, which is why those that have lived that along have been tainted by radiation or FEV. That being said, I think it would be hard to differentiate between mental health factors brought on by only age, untouched by any other factors; there's no control group, so to speak, of a perfectly healthy human who has lived that long, that we can use to mark as a control.
I agree with you Oxhorn! Part of Kellogg's problem is the way he was raised. If he had a better childhood, he wouldn't have had so much hatred and anger. At the same time, Kellogg also had himself to blame for making such poor decisions. So a mixture of both bad parents and bad choices led him to being such a villain of the storyline. I have a mixture of sadness over his childhood and anger over his personal decisions afterwards
Kellogg's mom is awful, but she does have a point with the gun. Especially in the Capital Wasteland, there is nobody near you to protect you if something happens, so you need a gun. It's something I think about in America as well. A *LOT* can happen in the 5-30 minutes it takes for a police officer to finally show up on scene, and you usually only ever get a few seconds to protect yourself IRL. So I think people that go around, expecting the police to always have their backs and protect their families are just absurd.
Sukki Blue I keep a gun nearby most of the time nowadays and that lesson to a kid in itself isn’t so bad but when it comes from a bad parent it’s obviously never going to have the right message
And for the "we could intervene quick", this is mostly shit. You all need to be with a high morale, and you all know humans are not the highest morale entity.
I really wish we could have got more of a story with Kellogg in the form of nick valentine , like when you heard him once right after the memory den I wish that happened more often and more frequently as a quest where you get to deal with that in however you can wether itd be killing nick and Kellogg or somehow separating the two or you know something along those lines
"The greatest foolishness is thinking you can stand against the world, No one can. The wiser man makes friends, makes family, makes allies; Because in times of trouble, True friends and family will stand with him when he needs them." ~Oxhorn
Andrew Avery "Ain't you, or me, or anybody is gonna hit as hard as life, and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you down to ya knees and keep you there permanently if you let it." ~Rocky Balboa, from Rocky Balboa
Kellogg in my opinion is easily the best, most fleshed out character in the entire game, and it breaks my heart that there was only one way to resolve that ending. By the time you went through the entire process of learning about Kellogg, it felt hollow to kill him, there was no vengeance in it. It was just, hollow and bleak.
That's the point, revenge is always hollow and bleak, there's no satisfaction in it. It's brilliant storytelling to direct it as such. I feel as though that they didn't do a good enough job making you want to kill him before meeting him though, as it would have made us connect better to the sole survivor, and make that plot point work a little better.
I was just disappointed that our only option was to kill him, I don't think a man like Kellogg would have ever experienced mercy, and that would have been an interesting option to explore.
I do wish that there was a charisma check that would allow him to become a POW and be put in Cambridge or in a cage in the castle or lock3d in the institute it would have been nice to show meecy and attempt to rehabilate him but your character would,nt as he shot and killed your spouse and neighbours he kidnapped your son and put you through much pain but without him we would,nt have joined the brotherhood, started the minutemen found or son again he was a brill character though 10/10 bethesda
I know its not gonna be a popular opinion, but I'm glad we didn't get a "mercy" option. Because in the context of this situation, it would not have made sense. Consider, not just the sole survivor's feelings in that moment, but Kellogg's. He *wants* you to end him. He knows what he's done, the path he's lead. He actually respects you for making it this far, and when you were spared in the beginning he knew deep down, that one day you would come for him. He was waiting for it, I think. It fits with the twisted sense of the world he has, its a sort of justice for all he's done. Things coming full circle and all that. I really think, if there was a dialog option to "spare" him, that he would have called you a fool or coward and then shot himself. Seriously, that outcome would have been in keeping with the character we see. He is not going to accept mercy. And he certainly won't allow himself to be "rehabilitated". Don't get me wrong, I wish there were more peaceful options sometimes, and I prefer that approach in my own life. But in this game we are playing the role of the sole survivor, and some of that story and attitude is set from the beginning. I don't hate it as much as some people, since I have played RPGs for years and am used to sometimes playing the role I am handed. And in this story, this really was the only way it could end. Its a shame this is the last of Kellogg, but again, he was done I think. He'd had a decent run, much longer then he ever planned. And he hated his life and the world that made him the way he was. Your revenge for your family, and learning about the institute from him before his death, are the closest he gets to a redemption. And the sole survivor isn't likely going to spare him, even if they are a morally good character, since they know without a doubt he will keep killing people. Its literally all he knows. Sometimes in life there are situations like this, a sort of no-win scenario. But I do think this encounter was handled well. I do think it was in character. Because like I said, no matter how much you the player might have wanted him as a companion or wanted to "redeem" him, it would have not fit the person we have seen. He would never have accepted it. And I applaud Bethesda for making such a fleshed out character, and for letting him have the end he both wanted and deserved. Its nice to have choices in an RPG, but its not truly a *story* unless some things you can't control. That's what makes the choices you do get all the more powerful.
A lot of people are saying they wasted a character but the way I see it the Fallout 4 developers were trying to get across that every person you kill or let free has a story behind them and you just ended or continued it
I agree wholeheartedly with almost everything said here, (well done sir) but I would like to give my two cents on your saying of "A wise man learns from the wisdom of others, while the fool learns by experience." I would say rather that the fortunate and the clever learn from the experiences of others, while the reckless and the unfortunate learn through experience. By the end, though, I would say that either one of those paths can lead to wisdom. The fool, though, the fool is someone who never learns at all. And Kellogg? Even after knowing first hand what it was to suffer, even having all the skill and knowledge to fight and survive in the wasteland, to simply press on hurting others and killing for no greater reason than because that was the life he knew...? Yes. Kellogg was, indeed, a fool.
What if "The Old Man" is an unseen character. Someone in control of the Institute above Father. Someone who has always been in control of it, like Mr. House in the basement of the Lucky 38. Just a fan theory I just made up.
I believe Kellogg was talking about the previous director or perhaps commenting on Shaun’s old age, seeings as by the time Kellogg leaves diamond city it was at least probably a day after piper wrote the synthetic truth.
There would of have had to of been. Kellogg refers to someone as "Old man". The entire time. Even when retrieving the real baby Shaun. Father IS Shaun after 60 years pass after your son is kidnapped. So who was he referencing to as "Old man" if baby Shaun wasn't old yet?
Kellogg's mom reminds me of the scene where Conan's father tells him about the, "Riddle of Steel" and says the only thing in the world he can trust is the weapon in his hands.
The inspiration for this character came to me while eating my favorite breakfast cereal. I wanted to call him Cornelius Kellogg after the rooster, but I didn't want to get sued so I changed it to Conrad Kellogg. Kellogg's Cornflakes™ is the cereal I recommend to eat bright and early to start a long day of playing Fallout 4™ But whatever you do, don't buy General Mills™ cereal! Those no good conniving thieves stole my likeness and made it the mascot for their Lucky Charms™! Plus, if you eat General Mills cereal, you'll turn into a ghoul! Kellogg's™ is much better, and it is the official cereal here at Bethesda because It Just Works.
According to another person in this comment section, he was originally supposed to use a 10mm but it was changed to a 44 revolver. But they forgot to remove the casings
Oxhorn, I like how you do a deep dive on characters. Sometimes, through you, I see things I missed or maybe look at from a different angle. I like how you don’t let Kellogg off the hook due to a bad childhood. We can’t help the way we were raised but we have the freedom to do better.
boyjohn Ditto for me long time/first time. And I agree these videos are very good, but I for one can do without the “morality” commentary. It doesn’t add to it, except for time. And I don’t mind him stating his opinion about Kellogg ONCE but he droned on and on about it and what he thought about Kellogg/morality. In a game about making decisions, moral and otherwise, for ourselves we don’t need someone to do it for us, or at least forcing theirs on us.
"I'm not a crazed gunman, Old Man, I'm a mercenary! 'What the difference be?' One's a job and the other's mental sickness!" I'll tell ya... Shaun, did NOT care for. "...I think a synth saw Nate... yes, yes it did!" Boom! Feelings? You know who has a lot of feelings? The bloke who bludgeoned my wife and kids to death with a golf trophy. No, professionals have STANDARDS. Be polite. Be efficient. And never turn down a contract from anyone you meet.
This is the only time I'll disagree with Mr. Ox ,in abusive childhood from seeing domestic abuse and verbal to physical on himself children develop cptsd (complex post traumatic tress disorder ) and those who were a victim and grow to victimize have built in logic to re traumatize themselves doing all the bad though inexcusable he subconsciously makes himself go through it all and in a twisted way he could see his actions as merciful ,sparring families and people from becoming numb and monsters like he is ( insert dark Knight quote ) but that's just my opinion
I work in an office and I've listened to all my of music ten times over. I started listening to this on my earphones and it's really making the day go by faster. Thanks, Oxhorn.
I really enjoyed Kelloggs character.. I thought "oh no, another hollow villian" as we were on the chase but as his story unfolded I took pity on the man up until his evils and saw them as two separate people. The outsider who is just trying to get by and the man who succumbs to evil. All wrapped up in a great performance from his VO artist!
Theres also a theory that mama Murphy is the doctor with kellog at the beginning and that's how she knows your son is alive, if you look at her face it has the same structure.
@@DogsRNice nope, if you have played Fallout 1, 2 & New Vegas or watch these videos from Oxhorn, exist a group of people known a Psycher's, they are able of telepathy and in rare cases able to see the future with other dimentions, it's only happen after the great war, these people have been exposed to slight dose of F.E.V or some of them unlocked by Chems like Murphy.
Oxhorn: ^Very intricate and detailed backstory of Kellogg^ Me: To half the Fallout 4 players, he's just an easy way to get a legendary .44 and badass jacket with arm things on it. No disrespect, video's great (as is all your other content), just stating the obvious.
@@itsmeshadow6722 the only good synth are the ones who know they are snyths and can admit that. If They know they are machines and don't replace humans then they shouldn't be executed
I mean, regardless on your feelings towards synths, the Brotherhood engages in some pretty questionable practices. Scribe Haylen said it best. "Their cause is noble, but their methods leave a lot to be desired"
I feel Kellogg should simply be pitied. When I dealt with Kellogg I took a forgive but do not forget approach. Kellogg when he went into the vault and took Shaun it was under the orders of the Institute. He only shot the spouse because s/he wouldn't give Shaun up in a timely manner. Kellogg was a tool of the Institute in a similar manner to a gun. Who should you hate the tool or the wielder of the tool. The person I blame is the director who sent Kellogg to the vault in the first place whilst only disliking Kellogg for taking Shaun and shooting my spouse.
Just realized Kellog has been around since Fallout 2, maybe even before that. He’s been around during possibly the Masters time, West Coast Enclave time, and Fallout 3 time. He’s one of the oldest characters in Fallout.
I always thought the old man is Father. I don't believe for a second that he's Shaun. The real Shaun died after the Institute had no more use for him. tech-enhanced age aside, the Kellogg you see in the vault doesn't look any different than the one you see in Hagen. A man like that would have at least a few new scars.
I don't think it's being a coward. I thinks it's receiving so much trauma to the brain and the heart that they break. Like going insane and not being able to control it. Some of us are born into money, into big loving families and constant opportunities and some of us are born into pure shit. Imagine not having any support and not ever having much of anything and still losing that little bit you have on a constant basis. Others progress and you try and try but fail. Do you know what this failure does to a person? This solitude and alienation? It makes you sad and eventually it will bring you into a blind hatred. Some people are strong enough to make it out but many collapse under the weight of savage oppression in a very cruel world. Kellogg clearly broke. Not that what hes doing is right but its a viscous circle. Good video tho as always
Sounds like a paragraph about a pity party. My father grew up on a block where men sold their own daughters for sexual favors. Crack and heroin were rampant. His parents were just as poor as every one else. Now he's retired and worth 4.5million approximately. Sob stories help no one and we all have one. Go get it or sit and watch others thrive.
@@Blexxor12 Yeah well, that's incredible that your old man made it out. But that's obviously because he's an exceptional person. Not all of us are well-equipped to deal with an onslaught of trauma and come out in one piece, and he's very fortunate but you shouldn't be so callous.

Perhaps the best bit about how Kellogg was introduced to us (the players) is that we only got to know him better AFTER we killed him. We didn't get to choose our course of action after learning about someone, letting us ponder our actions after they were done. Which... is nothing short of what real life is.
We never got to choose our course
@@a.k8185 i think OP means we get to choose wether or not to forgive the sentient box of cereal with a gun
Sometimes I wish he was alive so we could forgive him n be friends

I agree, it was really well written. Even evil people can be wise.
Kevin Jones True, anyone can be wise.
The world is an odd place very odd
I like Kellogg cause he admits he's past the breaking point for good and evil he accepts he's evil and just want to live
I agree, A smart person would see that.
I understand lance.

Christopher Neve Not bad.
I really like this theory. This feels like a very plausible theory.

Wait. Kellogg expresses a bit of guilt over the Sole Survivor's spouse's death. He tried to avoid it by giving the spouse the option and warning them.
And I wouldn't say that he is a coward. He is a survivor. There is a slight difference of doing bad things out of heroism/survival instinct than just being an evil person.
He isn't evil, but he is a monster. And for his monstrosity he has paid. But he isn't evil
Brimley Yes a simple point hits it on the head.
HE could have just punch him or knock him out.
Kellog is the darkness in the hearts of men. I liked his chatacter over all.
he is a sociopath he feels no remorce he doesn't care who he kills if he gets paid and while he did warn your spouse that wouldn't have mattered to him
Assaultron: "Identity of assailant: Kellogg"
Sole Survivor: "Did Kellogg do this?"
Assaultron: "Identity of assailant confirmed: Kellogg."
and Kellogg is less of a monster than Father, who isn't just responsible for the deaths of many innocents like Kellogg, but the unethical experimentation on all of his victims, their families, torturing synths, that, despite not being human, are definitely intelligent enough to be considered sentient, using them as slaves and nothing else.
Assaultron: Yeah, this is big brain time

Yep,like every single outlaw on the RDR series.
It always disturbed me that Kellog wasn’t a Legendary enemy. He was truthfully a legend, plus he drop his bad ass outfit and Pistol, and couple of stealth boys and some high-value tech to sell.
The only Kellogg I like is the frosted flake variety.
This one is pretty cool too though.

Gavin Seery Maybe he was preparing to go somewhere else after he was cured
Gavin Seery It's so dangerous they wouldn't think a man would go there
Oxhorn I really enjoy your lore and in depth story videos. I’m the kind of player who skips past reading terminals and even conversations so I get get back to the action, so I really find these great. Thanks for your hard work in putting them together. Keep up the good work and keep fighting the good fight.
you skip cut scenes while playing the game just to watch the cutscenes and analysis videos later..?
I dont think he really victimized himself. I think that after he lost everything he cared for he just stopped caring... about everything. I dont think he was trying to run away from his loss either, I doubt he even realised that it was what he was doing until long after. He just focused on earning caps and surviving another day.
First time I played I longed for revenge, to kill Kellogg, but since I walked through his memories I dont have the same drive to kill him. I can't help but to see him as some wounded animal. I only do it now (except for quest reasons) to put him out of his misery. My quest for revenge has permanently turned into a quest for mercy
Exactly
Of course, agreed
Those are the words of somone who lived in relative paradise before the war.

Allan The Old gamer on the mountain he just wanted a challenge the solo survivor fought in the great war he was someone just as violent as Kellogg
@@donnellebarfield3964 NATE. The male survivor. Is the one who fought in the great war. NORA.However. is a Lawyer. But kellogg reacts the same.
I'm late lol but you and I have similar paths where as I was owned by the state of texas and abandonment of family at a young age (7).
Respect dude hope life is good now 🤞
I really got to fundamentally disagree with your conclusions about Kellogg.
YES YES YES I AGREE WITH YOU VERY VERY MUCH i honestly got angry at his conclusion because they didn't make sense to myself or the evidence shown
One Really Grumpy Jill, i think kellogg was beyond help by this point. Besides the sole survivor could never forgive kellogg for killing the spouse
@@jackspoon7252 Angry lol. You need to chill

Nietzsche's Moustache nope. He needed the family alive. He didn't want to kill the player but simply had too. He knew he ruined ur family and even gives a passionate (like it matters) "damn" when he does, but says "at least we still have the backup" looking at you. They needed u for something..

I'm pretty sure that Kellogg was perfectly content for you to kill him in the end, because he knew as long as he lived he would keep doing what he did
sad thing is just about 75% of everyone would end up like kellog if an event like fallout happened
75% of whats left living if we must get that technical because the people who don't live like this are most likely going to end up dead
And then you realize that you can’t buy a gun without a permit to pro text yourself
These officers are really bad at their jobs...
Come in Europe, we didn't have these problems/fears about guns.
Why? Because they are way less guns.
You should see how a civilised country live.
And for the "we could intervene quick", this is mostly shit. You all need to be with a high morale, and you all know humans are not the highest morale entity.
Why do people always have to bring real life shit into stuff
I really wish we could have got more of a story with Kellogg in the form of nick valentine , like when you heard him once right after the memory den I wish that happened more often and more frequently as a quest where you get to deal with that in however you can wether itd be killing nick and Kellogg or somehow separating the two or you know something along those lines

so is the sole survivor the only person in this story to stand against the world?
if you disagree on that note, you have probably never experienced true friendship..
Sindraschronicles - My thoughts exactly.
as Shrek would say "Ogre's are like onions they have layers" I think Kellogg is an ogre.
It is really sad when 4 dialogue options come up and they are all just end up being kill Kellogg :/

I agree wholeheartedly with almost everything said here, (well done sir) but I would like to give my two cents on your saying of "A wise man learns from the wisdom of others, while the fool learns by experience."
I would say rather that the fortunate and the clever learn from the experiences of others, while the reckless and the unfortunate learn through experience.

Theres also a theory that mama Murphy is the doctor with kellog at the beginning and that's how she knows your son is alive, if you look at her face it has the same structure.
OOO
Noooo.... she is a Psycker
@@teoborges3949 why does her being an institute doctor change that?
After all maybe the sight is the result of some experiment
@@DogsRNice nope, if you have played Fallout 1, 2 & New Vegas or watch these videos from Oxhorn, exist a group of people known a Psycher's, they are able of telepathy and in rare cases able to see the future with other dimentions, it's only happen after the great war, these people have been exposed to slight dose of F.E.V or some of them unlocked by Chems like Murphy.
Oxhorn: ^Very intricate and detailed backstory of Kellogg^
Me: To half the Fallout 4 players, he's just an easy way to get a legendary .44 and badass jacket with arm things on it.
No disrespect, video's great (as is all your other content), just stating the obvious.
I Agree
Maxson is no villain, he just wants to fight the disgusting and deceitful synths.
Yeah but synths like Danse and Gen 3 synths don't know they are synths so they are the victim and they aren't purposefully being deceitful.
@@itsmeshadow6722 the only good synth are the ones who know they are snyths and can admit that. If They know they are machines and don't replace humans then they shouldn't be executed
ItsMeShadow Thats just proves the point how dangerous it is, just like Danse himself said.
Chris Rigney thats exactly what ive thought
Do all scars have to be on the face?
maybe he just got good?
The voice in the hall is talking about Sarah and Mary, it’s so damn sad
@@Blexxor12 If only life is that black and white.
@@Blexxor12 Yeah well, that's incredible that your old man made it out. But that's obviously because he's an exceptional person. Not all of us are well-equipped to deal with an onslaught of trauma and come out in one piece, and he's very fortunate but you shouldn't be so callous.
I might be 6 years late but you really made me enjoy fallouts lore and because of you i cant help but nerd out every time i play the game. Thank you for being one of the biggest reasons i love fallout.
