      The Eternal Chronicler Porter Gage is quoted of saying that the brotherhood is no better than the raiders, they're just organized and better equipped and trained. So yes, they do extort food from settlements

      MrRyeRob1 oh so we should take anything a raider says as gospel. No they don't I've played fallout 4, 4 times and in everyone of those times I never saw an instance where the BOS raided settlements unless the player choose to be apart of a most likely unsanctioned operation.

      You realize those quest are unsactioned right? And that you're the one deciding how to go about obtainig the crops? Feeding the trops it's is classified as a tertiary quest/Radiant quest and a optional quest and not a main quest or side quest it no impact on the Storyline (BOS Storyline) You Who choose to do the quest, the deal is very simple the farmers give some crops to the brotherhood of steel and the brotherhood od steel protect them from Raiders, Gunners, Super mutants and Rust Devils "Food For Protection" You can buy the crops or You can persuade them. Doesn't matter because the quests are unsactioned, do you know what that Word means?

      Not a team player at all. Quite selfish.
      And therefore not military material.
      In the military it's we not me. Something outside of ourselves.
      I may fall but I do not die.
      Our words and deeds are passed on in others.
      Another will be there to pass the torch.
      Initiate Clarke has this individualism within him. He has no higher purpose outside himself.

    There was one kind of behavior described about these 'feral' ghouls that made this quest a really hard decision to keep siding with the Brotherhood (in the same vein as strongarming poor settlers for food).
    Not once in the game have I encountered feral ghouls retreating. Retreating implies more than responding on basic hunger (which ghouls do). Which means that the ghouls at the Boston Airport might actually not have gone feral completely (or at least not all ghouls there were feral).

    • @GeneralJackRipper
      @GeneralJackRipper 7 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Stealing food from settlers is entirely the player's choice. You have the option of persuading or purchasing the food too. Don't blame the Brotherhood for your own incompetence.

    • @antikommunistischaktion
      @antikommunistischaktion 7 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      I have encountered ferals retreating from me before, they would run away then regroup and come back at me. Also they would still be feral as they would have the pack mentality, and sometimes the pack mentality is to retreat, regroup, and go again.

    • @darthvaderreviews6926
      @darthvaderreviews6926 7 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      "Persuading" is just a euphemism for "Threaten" in this context. Even if
      you take the nice guy option of acting like it's "tribute for
      protecting you", that's just the same line common gangsters use.
      Purchasing the food is only avaliable as a last resort, and it's the Sole Survivor's last resort, not an official way to go about the mission. Teagan doesn't even mention it as an option IIRC, it's effectively a failure state for the dialogue check.
      Is it the player's choice? Sure. With The Institute it's also the player's choice to handle one particular synth recovery operation differently, but that has no effect on the mission's implications on synth recovery operations. The BoS mission makes it clear that the BoS take food from farms by threats/force, just like the Institute mission I mentioned makes it clear the Institute recover synths against their will. Just because the Sole Survivor can refuse to do the same does not negate the existence of hundreds of BoS soldiers who do it themselves and the BoS higher-ups who are completely complacent with their behaviour. Player's choice =/= faction's choice.

    • @GeneralJackRipper
      @GeneralJackRipper 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      DarthVaderReviews The "nice guy option" IS to purchase the food. Everything else is being a dick, or a murderer. Whatever your opinion about the BoS, they do have humanity's best interests at heart: Preventing technology from destroying the world again.

    • @darthvaderreviews6926
      @darthvaderreviews6926 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Sure, it is the nice guy option, but it's not the BoS option. The point I was making as that just because YOU can sidestep having to commit immoral actions for the BoS doesn't negate the fact the BoS asked you to do those immoral actions (Just because Deagan didn't directly say "Take it by threats or by force" does not mean that's not what he was heavily implying). My point was mostly that the player choice in that scenario has no bearing on the BoS's morality.
      And sure, they do have humanity's best interests at heart, but you were the one who in a different comment said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I have no doubt Maxon has 100% conviction to the Brotherhood's ideals and legitimately believes he is doing the best thing for humanity in the long run.
      The problem is that Maxon's version of Brotherhood ideals are not the best thing for humanity IMO, (There are Gen 3 Synths, Ghouls and even some Super Mutants who are not threats, exterminating them would simply be murder and would actually hurt humanity's chances in the long run) and even if they were it doesn't justify threatening settlers with force if they're not willing to pay their protection money.
      Brotherhood of Steel in general, I kinda like. They've changed from iteration to iteration, some I can get behind more than others, but I overall think the Wasteland could use a group that keeps tabs on potentially world-shattering pre-war tech and makes sure the wrong stuff doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Maxon's BoS, however, raid innocent settlements for food, and murder innocents because of "What they represent" rather than who they are, which is why I refuse to side with Maxon's BoS.

      It sounds idealistic but, other people might think so too. Piper alludes to this in some dialogue. I wiped out feral ghouls for a minutemen quest. She says something like there's nothing left of the person they used to be. As if she's saying don't feel bad for killing them. Not that there's really an option it's you or them.

    I empathize with Clarke over the fact he sees ghouls as humans, at least to some degree. Non-ferals are fine in my book, while ferals were once human and deserve some degree of respect but need to but killed before they kill somebody else. If it wasn't for the state of the society and limited supplies I would be for trying to capture and researching a cure but at the current state of the world you have to hunt them down even if they run because they're not going to rethink their life and not attack people anymore like a sane human could but will kill whenever they get a chance. And I have to say, hearing people having fun killing them is a bit depressing, but if you don't dehumanize them what will be left of you after a year of hunting them out of a necessity ?
    Nevertheless telling him to turn in is the only right choice for me, wish we could take part in his trial and perhaps speak in his favor or against him.

    Clarke is misguided in seeing humanity in the ferals, but his heart is in the right place and the instinct to value human life even in your enemy is good. Ferals may sadly be beyond saving, but regular ghouls are people as worthy of empathy as any regular human, and Clarke's recognizing that the Brotherhood of Steel is wrong about them speaks well for his character. I convinced Clarke to leave the Brotherhood, and told Kells that it was all a mistake after all, pleased that I'd at least managed to get 1 decent person away from those hate-mongering zealots.

Like most players, my first run-in with the order was Danse and his scouting party, and with memories of the way Lyons kept the East Coast chapter of the BoS in Fallout 3 true to the intent of the BoS charter rather than its letter, I assumed the BoS was still a force for good and had Danse induct Nora into its ranks. It's not until later in the game, well past the initial chance to join the BoS through Danse's invitation, that it becomes clear that they've been corrupted by the foolish mentality that's destroying the West Coast BoS and that spawned the ineffectual Outcasts in Fallout 3.

    I intended for Clarke to turn himself in, but after that dialogue he must have a tag necessary to trigger the coils, damaging him and making him confrontational. I had to walk past him to get to the elevator, and the coils triggered.

    A great MOD quest would be to develop a CURE for ghoul-ism.
    'Cause for the Cure' and you will have to find Curie the robot to help you develop the Restoration ammo.
    Put the new ammo into a Syringer gun and once shot into any feral ghoul, they fall asleep for 10 seconds, are cured, and stand back up as a healed healthy smoothskin settler. Glowing ghouls stand up as sane sentient ghouls. They will thank you and say the nightmare is finally over. You can then send them to the settlements of your choice, to join your population. The formerly glowing ghouls may comment they feel so much weaker now, and say they may no longer be immortals, but it's good to be able to think and talk again.
    Curie will give you high Karma points for taking the quest, finding the cure, and for each ghoul you cure.
    Saving the longest surviors in the wasteland, instead of slaughtering them all.
    This would also give you a chance to cure The Old Gang of your named ghoul neighbors.
    Solving the Duty or Dishonored quest would launch the Cause for the Cure Quest. Once both are completed,
    a third quest would begin ''No One Left Behind'' where Curie suggests the Restoration ammo may even work on a perfectly preserved dead body. The Sole Survivor returns to Vault 111 with Curie,
    and opening all the frozen corpses pods, Curie revives them... but they will only want to settle in Sanctuary.
    Their old home town. Concluding the quest with all pods empty and the occupants as normal settlers.
    Solving this quest would require fetching some new hidden tech items from the various tech and space program locations, allowing the player to repair the pods, opening them and reviving the frozen occupants. Sadly, Curie will comment she can not help the dead spouse, as she was murdered violently, and thus was not perfectly preserved.

    This quest, more than any other Brotherhood Of Steel quests, defines what is their glaring weakness.
    Intolerance.
    Are feral ghouls a threat? Obviously. Was initiate Clarke wrong? Perhaps. But the Brotherhood does not have this discussion. They dictate. They dictate that there is no mercy for ghouls. But worse, they dictate that there is no place amongst them for people like Clarke, people who do not fall in step with their doctrine, who are not just a cog in a machine led by one man.
    Forget the morality of that for one moment, forget the history of one man having a army zealously loyal to him and him alone, and look at the weakness. Clarke is obviously capable. He did fight, he is trained. He snuck past patrols, successfully and non violently dealt with ghouls. This kind of man would make a superb scout.
    But instead, he is locked up after a one sided trial, or outright killed without any trial at all.
    By clinging to rigid doctrine, the Brotherhood clings to fundamental weakness, a weakness no other faction in the game holds.

    I think covering for Clarke but informing Kells of the Ghoul nest is the best solution. Clarke gets to return to his normal life (since no doubt he would be punished far too harshly by Maxson if ratted out) but the Ghoul problem is dealt with regardless with Kells sending a team to exterminate them afterwards.
    Can confirm also that the area is cleared of Ghouls after choosing this option, I went back sometime later and it was empty.

Ferals seem peaceful among other Ghouls. There IS another solution to wanton slaughter promoted by the Brotherhood (keep in mind, they hate non-Feral ghouls, too). I wish this was more explored in Fallout 4. I totally empathize with Clark here, and I also agree it was rather misguided for him to keep the Ferals around.

    I was quite overjoyed to have discovered this mission for the first time. I spared Clarke and allowed him to keep feeding the ferals. Felt like this is something I asked, someone being sympathetic to the ferals. Ghouls are victims of Radiation, it's not their fault they go Feral.
    That said I'm still supporting the Brotherhood. As Victoriam.

    My BoS character told him to turn himself in but failed the speech check. He turned on me when I opened the door to the ghouls, so Danse and I put him down.
    No regret. I wanted his black uniform.

      Danse is a walking bullet sponge lmao. having him as a companion is almost cheaty. I had a situation where (after blind betrayal) he pulled out my nuka nuke launcher I had given him while I was carrying junk (Also gave him two nuka nukes, as we were walking through bloodworm territory [I abhor those things.] a few minutes before. we had just entered the commonwealth again, and were walking toward my base at Starlight.) and hit a vertibird pilot in the left nut (no joke, through a hole in the glass of the front window and right between the legs.) from probably 300 feet.

    When I did this quest, I passed the speech check the first two times, but angered him by trying to do the optional part. I reloaded both times, and the 3rd time failed the speech check. I also tried to stealth all the gouls, and in the parking garage part, after I killed all the gouls, the glowing one revived them ALL, making everything for nothing. But I successfully did stealth first try, so not all was bad

    Just did this quest last weekend.
    I decided to let him turn himself in.
    He had good intentions but his actions were wrong. He has to be punished for stealing the rations.
    If Bethesda would've leaved the 4th resolutuion to Blind Betrayal inside the game, I would have demoted him and set him up to cleaning duty with the ability to regain his trust.

    Oxhorn, there is technically a 4th way with Initiate Clarke, you mentioned about lying to Captain Kells, you can tell him that Clarke has fled (if you convince Clarke to leave that is). I suppose that's the option you'd choose if you saw reason in him trying to stop the Feral Ghouls but... Meh.

    • @simonlee7513
      @simonlee7513 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can also cover up for Clarke by telling Kells it was Raiders and he'll stay in the depot with Gavil and Lucia. He missed TWO outcomes in total.

    Great video, and great quest! So a few different things happen with Clarke, I've found: In my RR playthrough, I simply told him to run. I liked his ethics, and I was gonna take down the BoS anyway. When I came back after the Prydwen went down, he was standing in the middle of the airport wreckage, panicked and saying, "I can do this, I can do this..." For my Institute playthrough, I convinced him to turn himself in and I never checked on him in jail. But Elder Maxson must've given him his old job back because I ran into him when it came time to turn against the BoS(you can tell I'm not into them.)

He probably uses a combination of scouring the internet for leads and thorough exploration. Many people will take his words for gospel without so much as a second thought, so he has to be as accurate as possible.

    This reminds me of Bloodborne. In the ruins of an area known as Old Yharnam. The district is burning, thanks to the plauge, a central theme in the game. Wen you first get through the area, there is a message warning hunters, which your character is, to stay out. Of you continue, a man known as Durja will commend your efforts on reaching the area, but that he has to stop you. He fires at you with a gatling gun mounted to a central tower, and also throws Moltovs down at you.
    If you climb up to the tower, going through a different path, such as the exit that leads through Hypergoal Gaol, he won't be hostile. There, you can talk to him.
    Durja explains that the beasts in Old Yharnam can't hurt anyone, as the town is abandoned. The frequent bonfires keep the monsters from leaving. Durja, like you, is a hunter.
    But Durja knows that beasts are once humans, like a feral ghoul. So, as you hunt and kill beasts, Djura thinks that they are still people technically; as the plauge did that to people.
    When you talk to Durja, he'll explain his reasoning, and ask if you will hunt the beasts of Old Yharnam. If you say Yes, he'll attack. If no, he'll give you a personal item, the Powder Keg Badge, and leave you alone, and him alone with the beasts of Old Yharnam.
