Or is the U2 sound really The Echo & The Bunnymen sound? Echo's earlier music (prior to this) was much more post-punk and discordant. They were very influential and a monster of a live band.
The first time I heard U2 was in 1980 on a US indy/alternative music radio show as part of a set of neo-psychedelic/psychedelic-revival bands, placed alongside, among others, the Teardrop Explodes and Echo and the Bunnymen. It was their 1980 song "I Will Follow." In the late seventies and early eighties, the Teardrop Explodes and Echo and the Bunnymen were considered psychedelic-revival bands, and the radio deejay thought early U2 would fit in well with them, since U2 also had a very atmospheric sound that contrasted with the stark, unadorned sounds of punk and postpunk that had been influential since 1977. By the time this song came out in 1987, Echo and the Bunnymen had added more lush electronics to what had originally been a kind of Doors-like psychedelic sound.
Among groups I remember when I first experienced MTV. I'm trying to remember if I ever heard stuff like this anywhere else (beside VH1). Possibly the public radio station years later after they did an alt music format change.
Edge always used far more delay, more 'echo' if you'll pardon the pun, i hear where you are coming from though, 90's U2 sounded nothing like 80's U2 as well, Echo and the Bunnymen were definitely a more 80's band, a definite 80's sound, like could be in a John Hughes movie.
Love this song - don't really hear the U2 comparison. Keyboards and guitar have a slightly "out of tune" sound sometimes that I'm sure is intentional. Gives the song that wavering, dreamy vibe.
I kinda think I hear what you're saying, Harri, but maybe it's just similarities from being on vaguely parallel paths within an overarching genre. I never considered either one of them really invoking the other.
Sorry Harri, but Echo & The Bunnymen sound nothing like U2. U2 was definitely more a rock band, while Echo were more New Wave. Both are great bands, but I really don’t hear any similarities
They and u2 came out same time great one for the best live

Maybe The Psychedlic Furs?
Awesome song! Brings back fun memories of parties and dancing in the 1980s. Thanks, Harri and Robert.
I loved them back in Junior High and High School!
Check out The Killing Moon by Echo & the Bunnymen

Thanks, Harri, love Echo & the Bunnymen! I don't think they sound like U2 👋
Love the song, glad you found it. I thought it was U2 back in the day, too. Check out "Gorgeous" by Gene Loves Jezebel from 1987.
Something I loved about Echo and the Bunnies was that they didn't take themselves so seriously: th-cam.com/video/LbYxP11rbSM/w-d-xo.html
Tell your stories! Lol
You're a cool dude Harri. Check out some old reggae. "Johnny Dollar". (A quiet place) Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters.

pls react to: "cinderelas - lil esk". pls
Echo doesn't sound like U2 at all to my ears. Maybe only this song only.
A lot of people compare the two bands. I don't hear it either, but I do like both bands.
