I love all the British bands from the 1980s and 1990s: The Charlatans, Darling Buds, Stone Roses, Lush, Primitives, Blur, Ride, Doves, Fuzzbox, Candyskins, etc.

RIDE (OX4, time machine, black nite crash)
LUSH (leaves me cold, bitter, sweetness and light)
STONE ROSES (I am the resurrection, fool's gold. The 9 minute versions)
      CHARLATANS (weirdo, tremelo song)
DOVES (there goes the fear, pounding)... Thanks for mentioning Darling Buds! I hadn't thought of them since the 90's but willl be revisiting them now.

Man, also loooved The Church! "Under The Milky Way" was one of the most beautiful songs on the 80's and "Reptile" was great too. I never thought of the similarities, but Steve Kilbey's vocal delivery did share a sensibility with Ian McCulloch's even if they still sounded quite different.

Robert Smith of the Cure was actually IN the Banshees for a time as their guitarist. He shows up in the video for their cover of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence." There was a whole era of, as you called them "dark" bands who were skirting the goth/pop/rock line during the 80s and I was all about every one of them. Love and Rockets is another band that I hope you'll get to. They sprung from Bauhaus, kind of the godfathers of goth, I guess you could say. "So Alive" and "No New Tale To Tell" were radio hits of theirs, but they go much deeper than that. Though less goth, you can put Depeche Mode into that category loosely, especially with some of their mid-late 80s material. You have no idea how thrilled I am to see these bands getting some recognition and love on your channel! This music was my LIFE all through high school and college, and I still listen to it today. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, seriously!

Something about the 80s, the most diverse, atmospheric, melodic music of our times. So many great bands: Talking Heads, Television, Husker Du, Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Tears for Fears, The Police, The Cars, B62s, INXS, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Human League, Eurythmics, OMD, The Pretenders, Thompson Twins, The Fixx, XTC, Howard Jones, Joe Jackson, Violent Femmes, Level 42 ... Such a brilliantly diverse decade, the best in in modern music history, IMO. The 1950s to 70s had been building the experimentation, variety and importance of youth ("popular") music, but it all peaked in the 80s. The 1990s were quite good too, but by the turn of the century things had changed, mainstream tastes had narrowed, commerce had completely taken over, and I don't think we'll ever see the same variety and mix of anarchy, energy, creativity, anger, pain, thoughtfulness, fun and humour that the music of the 80s had in spades.

If you like a great guitar, haunting lyrics, catchy hooks and clear vocals, please do check out Suede (known variously as London Suede in the US). Variety shows in the 50’s and 60’s introduced us to music of our parents and then the rising rock groups. Still listening to new music, mostly alternative. Almost 74 and I avoid living in the musical past but you have taken me back in the most endearing way. And yes I was at Woodstock, but only Sunday morning until Monday morning leaving in muddy bell bottoms as Hendrix was playing The Star Spangled Banner. Thank you! Mac (Ian McCulloch) is my comfort voice. 💜 When I first heard the Bunnymen back in the early 80s, I went out and bought everything I could find. My love for them has only increased through the years. Nocturnal Me, Bedbugs and Ballyhoo, The Cutter, In the Margins, I Want to Be There (When You Come), and A Promise, and this one are a few of my absolute favorites of theirs. In the last few days, I was listening to The Cutter; and it brought me back to listening to it while in the car with my parents so many years ago (they’ve both been gone since the late 80s). It makes me so happy to see/hear you guys giving them a chance. I look forward to anything else that you react to. Thank you! 💜💜💜

One of my favorite bands from the new wave/alternative 80's. Great song! "The Cutter" has to be next and "Bed Bugs and Ballyhoo". Ian McCulloch (lead singer) has a unique voice that does express this style that feels strained, intense and has a passionate angst. As Amber said, this song is happy, even while feeling a bit darker. This was a style in the 80's new wave/alternative/goth that was hugely popular. You mentioned The Cure & Siouxsie & The Banshees. The Psychedlic Furs fit into this category as well and you have done "Love My Way".
Look at more PSYCHEDELIC FURS - "Heartbreak Beat", "The Ghost In You", "President Gas", "Pretty in Pink (from the movie soundtrack)", "All that Money Wants", "Heaven".

I discovered this band about 10 years ago listening to 80's alternative Sirius XM channel and was fortunate to see them live a few years ago. Great catalog. React To "The Cutter", "Bedbugs & Bellyhoos" or their cover of the Door's "People Are Strange" Looking for new band, how about Alphaville "Big In Japan" or "Forever Young". Thanks.😎

I'm glad you're enjoying Echo and the Bunnymen. They were one of my favorite bands back in the 80s when I was stationed in England. There are so many songs to recommend but I think you'll enjoy their Doors cover of "People are Strange". Personally, I liked Seven Seas because of the melody. The video of Seven Seas is way more lighthearted than the two songs you've reviewed but Ian McCulloch, the lead singer's vocals is still dark.

This was one of the stellar class of 1987's alternative canon, where a lot of artists/ bands that spent the first half of the 80s in relative obscurity suddenly found themselves w/ hit records. This band, The Cure, Psychedelic Furs, INXS, Depeche Mode, REM, Love & Rockets, Midnight Oil, Flesh For Lulu, New Order (who released a singles remix collection, but what the hey)- all had their breakout albums this year. They weren't necessarily "sellout" albums, though- more like more people finally caught on to what they were doing. :)
This was Echo's fifth studio album, and the last one with the original quarter- a year later, Pete De Freitas (the drummer) was killed in a motorcycle accident. (A year after that, in 1989, Echo singer Ian McCulloch, dedicated his first solo album, "Candleland", to him.)
