    Today we review the brand new Keychron Q5 Knob Edition! This is the first 96% keyboard that has a gasket mount and volume knob that I've reviewed and I gotta say that it's one of my favourites! Customizability is there, whether it's the switches, RGB, or remapping in general. The stock stabilizer for the spacebar is surprisingly solid with almost no rattle and that makes this keyboard great. This keyboard continues to use the same Q design with thick bezels and south facing switches for brighter looking LEDs and compatibility with Cherry profile keycaps!

    My Q6 will be arriving soon, but as a tax accountant there was no way I could convert to a 96% profile as much as I tried. I've been used to the double-key 0 numpad key for at least 25+ years now and still have a desk adding machine (even though I'm only 41 lol), so, yeah. All other things about the 96% are great but having the 0 under the 2 was immensely annoying and having to turn off the Numlock for certain Numpad features was annoying as all hell.

    I still prefer 100% keyboard. I dont know how you can say that no one needs a 100% kb. It is just a layout that everyone pretty much started on. I use almost every single key besides the numlock, insert and certain function keys. There are no dedicated page up/page dn buttons on this kb and sometimes those keys are important.

      Remappability and secondary layers has made things more accessible. You can have all your buttons without using extra space. From an ergonomic standpoint, it doesn't make sense to stick to a 100% layout when a keyboard like this can do the same thing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @brandon6984
      @brandon6984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@Romsicle Is a 100% keyboard not ergonomic? The best Ergo keyboards have a full set of keys and take up more desk real estate, some are split into 2 partsand a lot of people swear by them. I don't think it is correct to say that from an ergonomic viewpoint that it doesnt make sense. it definitely does make sense to those users wanting the real benefits of an ergo keyboard.

    • @Romsicle
      @Romsicle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@brandon6984 Oh my ergonomic perspective comes from the gaming side, where the closer your hands are, the more natural the body is, thus more ergonomic. As an editor who has used 65-60% size for majority of the time, I can't ever go back to a full size because it's just uncomfortable. If there was a scale, I believe standard 100% would be the least ergonomic. Layouts like the Alice keyboard would probably considered the best since it has the most natural stance. Just my opinion tho 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @MAIcrosoft
      @MAIcrosoft 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Yeah, it's a well known fact that many keyboard enthusiasts are in denial that there are people out there that need 100%. Always the same arguements; "you don't need it, makes it less portable, you can use layers instead, not ergonomic, etc.". Why can't they just accept the fact that people need 100% keyboards? Many companies that put these keyboards out are enthusiast themselves, and you can tell since you can find and buy any weird niche form factor you can think of (40% 50% 60% whatever%, ortho, split, southpaw and many many more) but the availability of 100% ones are rather scarce and limited.

    Why, oh why they thought HOME and END are more important than PG UP/DOWN. Sure, you can configure your knob to do that instead, but I am really interested if there are people who use home/end buttons more than pg up/dn. I recently bought the Q2 and I am so happy with it, out of the box a great experience for the money, I was even prepared to replace the keycaps as I didn't know the Qs come with PBT, was expecting those horrible ABS keycaps they put on K series, but even the keycaps are fine, I may buy the Q5 to replace my K4. Keychron is killing it!

    • @laffeybunn8557
      @laffeybunn8557 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the weight changes the spring weighting, so i wouldnt recommended that unless youre willing to do the following:
      1. spend money on new springs
      2. compromise with a light spacebar.
      Additionally, I have tried this using switch pad foam on the sides/bottom of the spacebar and it mutes the noise of the keycap hitting the case/plate. Silicone is also a viable alternative, but will likely weigh more then elmers glue.

      @DJaquithFL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@laffeybunn8557 .. Tell Keybored he's all wrong. Try the Elmer's Glue trick .. it's not permanent. Just add an 1/8th layer. No, you definitely don't need new springs unless you're an idiot and you fill up the entire cavity in glue.

    I don't think that people understand that even now in 2023, people need ALL of their keys, you say that you get all of your keys. Editors and such often use their PgUp, PgDn, Ins, Del, Home and End... This is not the keyboard for them. They're pretty much stuck using a 100%. So, don't get something like this if that's your use case.

  • @slartibartfast2649
    @slartibartfast2649 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One reason to get a 100% over a 96% is keycap options. Good luck finding an MT3 set for that board lol

    • @joelman1989
      @joelman1989 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @slartibartfast2649
      @slartibartfast2649 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@joelman1989 Yes, that would mean that there would be a keycap for overy switch. However, many keycap profiles differ for each row, meaning that layouts that move everything around, such as 96%, would end up with keys designed for the qwerty row (delete, end etc) and number row (insert home etc) being on the fn row, resulting in profiles not matching.

  • @lt1caprice57l
    @lt1caprice57l ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Disagree. Compact layouts are overrated. I want all keys at their proper size and in their proper places, and the only layout that does that is 100%.

    • @Romsicle
      @Romsicle  ปีที่แล้ว

      Compact layouts exist because a lot of people don't need a full 100%. It just depends what you need, and truthfully, most people don't need 100%. I miss using a full numpad, but a 65% is the best for me.

    • @lt1caprice57l
      @lt1caprice57l ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Romsicle don't take it the wrong way, I'm not trying to slam anyone. I just find all compact layouts overrated. They can also introduce issues when trying to find custom keycaps. Larger keycap sets like the Aifei sets (170+ caps) I have for my three Keychrons shouldn't have this issue, but with smaller sets like the Drop MT3 sets (~125 caps) the issue might be present.
      Also, since posting that my original comment, I bought ANOTHER 100% keyboard, a Keychron V6. 🤣😅 I'd do a soundtest, since there are no V6 videos on TH-cam that I can see, but all I have to record audio with is my phone or the built-in mic in my Pentax DSLRs.

  • @onederb71nln83
    @onederb71nln83 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I disagree and you really shouldn't make declarative statements on what people should be doing. I use a Q5 at home but a Q6 at the office and you just told me I'm wrong. You wanna delv into it and explain why I'm wrong? The short "0" is annoying AF when you doing accounting work.... And now I'm just assuming your another out of touch young streamer who never had a real job and think their option is the gold standard. Or did you think Keychron didn't know what they are doin as a company they put put out Q1-Q6 but you know how people should be 10 keying?

    • @Romsicle
      @Romsicle  ปีที่แล้ว

      I dunno where this anger is coming from... but ANYWAYS, I personally don't like the short 0 either. As a former numpad guy, long 0 is best for that thumb placement. I'm pretty sure I don't say that you HAVE to get this. I'm not forcing anyone to do anything. If anything, all my comments are just strong suggestions and literally urging people to comment whether they'd get this or not depending on what they need. 🤷And you responded with a good rebuttal, so it worked LOL

      RGB brightness is the same across most keyboards, but the thing that makes it look brighter is the plate.
