This seems like a really mismanaged company. It looks like a $300-500 keyboard, but considering it was manufactured in a 1st world country, I could see $800 max. It seems like too much money was spent on designing, prototyping, and marketing. Perhaps too big of a markup, like the guys running it want a huge return back on investment. Luxury keyboards have really low profit margins for those who run projects so they can be reasonably affordable, but maybe they wanted to see big profits back which is how it turned into this baffling $2000 price tag.
As someone who has built and paid for one-off keyboards to be manufactured, I do think the 1200 the case costs (plus shipping) is actually decently reasonable if you break it down. The 60% I had manufactured in China ended up costing around 800$ in parts alone. It’s been my experience from requesting quotes from suppliers in Europe that European manufacturing is roughly double the cost of China (a reason why Geistmaschine tried to move production to China with their second keyboard, which was decidedly cheaper than geist). Back to my keyboard, you can generally third production costs at scale. But you still need to consider overhead and profit. And also, based on what Geistmachine has shown on their discord, they have put a lot of work into developing the finish they use on their boards. If you add in staff costs, because Geistmaschine has several employees, I do think it’s not completely outrageous for what they are trying to sell. Geistmaschine does have several issues with their company, mainly as far as communication goes. No question there. But I personally can’t harp much on their product design or pricing.
Well I got defnitly entertained, thanks for the content your videeos are just one of the best pieces of media I follow on this platform please keep up the extremly good work
There's no excuse for the terrible packaging. For $2000 I want a great unboxing experience. Frey Ultra is 1/4 the price of this garbage and has better packaging then the Geist... I am all for very unique designs for the keyboard community but charging criminally expensive keyboards and packaging them like it's a tofu60 from KBDFans is just terrible.
Could not agree more. I own a qk100 and a new mode65 and while there are some downsides and hollowness on the qk100, it is a fullsize board for under 200. The mode was almost twice the price, but the perfection was in every piece and the investment did not feel like a rip off
For this price, it must at least come fully assembled already. And support every wireless protocol existing in the Universe and every OS to customize its programming. Instead, it requires the buyer to fiddle around with ribbon cables that are too easy to break with one unlucky move... Well, at least the switches are hotswappable.
i’m not sure fully assembled is a good thing. that would be a hug turn off for many in this hobby including me. if you can’t at least put it together once then you are missing the one element of fun when you get your dream keyboard.
I love how the wrapping is the exact material Germans use to wrap their lunch bread (Frischhaltefolie). Over 1000€ and 2 years of waiting is hard to justify for that
There is Norway that the housing was secured with Saran wrap. I participated in group buys back in 2015 that had a more "premium" unboxing experience for a quarter of the cost. My how time flies... and those times have certainly come and gone.
The price is certainly ridiculous but the board itself is gorgeous (even though personally I would probably go for the T-stand instead of the half moon). Love the colour and keycap selection; you might indeed have a styling type but there's nothing wrong with it. 👍🏼
It was mostly VAT 🙂 The shipping for the Geist itself was “only” $45. But the issue with ordering parts (keycaps, switches, stabs) all from different shops is that you pay, individually, for each of them.
Und wie mich das Video unterhalten hat. Dein Humor ist spitze, die Qualität deiner Videos überragend. Und zum "Produkt" ich schau es mir schon eine ganze Weile an und überlege. Und überlege. 😄
Great video. I am a new fan of your channel and I love your vibe. Also, I can't tell the difference between the two Bottega bags, the luxrul is close and cute, so that's enough for me. I will bring my friends to buy.
Looks beautiful. But it sounds as if the bottoming out isn't very pleasant on the fingers. Almost every body bottoms out. I personally founds the extreme low profile keyboards used by Apple and others are actually best in that regards.
The keyboard looks incredible, perfect amount of sterile and solid desing language, I love the concrete coloring paired with the metalic parts of the keyboard. This is the keyboard i would be using in my modern Brutalist minimalist office. My way of thinking is very niche but thats the perfect vibe i am getting from this keyboard :)
Their Instagram post popped up in my feed one day and I fell in love with it. Upon seeing the keyboard (which was Geist at that time), I instantly knew that this board is gonna be expensive. Like, "expensive" expensive. But dang it looks beautiful.
thanks to you. I don't feel bad skipping Geist anymore. agree with you on uneven knob gap and the silicone -- although we don't see them, the fact that we know they there is just a bit too much for the price.
That plastic wrap is the same type that's used to wrap pallets of goods so they don't go flying everywhere in the back of the truck on the way to the customer. Regular plastic wrap that you use at home isn't as strong as and such won't "roll up" into strings like pallet wrap will.
For that price tag I'd expect everything to be overengineered to insanity. Dinky little flex cable lol. Ok, not gonna question, this is luxury, this is for people who scoff at Louis Vuitton for being too plebian and gaudy.
I'm in a similar boat but behind in the timeline as a first-batch customer of the Studio ASP. Still really looking forward to the board but the delays and inconsistent communication have not been very encouraging. For the Geist, are you getting only this half moon or is there another polished one coming like some other edition(s)?
Hope you're going to receive yours soon, the Studio ASP looks stunning. I also have a T-Stand and a polished knob which I'm still waiting for, don't know when I'll get those, hopefully sooner than later 😅.
Fantastic! Both board and the video. How do you feel about the board's layout? It feels like giving a little bit more options would feel nice, especially 7u spacebar.
First of all, thank you! 🙂 Regarding the layout, it is nice but nothing special tbh, it's “just” a 65%. I do also agree with the 7u space bar, especially since my previous daily driver had one, so I had to get used to this again 😅.
Cheese Turbulence, making all the rest of us feel less bad for spending a couple of hundred on a keyboard :) Jokes aside, looking at the keyboard, I can TOTALLY understand - amazing video as always, and, FWIW, keyboard looks incredible and my hunger for beautifully designed things was satiated for a moment.
So years ago I wanted to buy a new mechanical keyboard. A bluetooth one, like 50 euro max. And started looking for the best board for the cheapest price. Fell hard into the keyboard hobby and ended up on subs like r/mechanicalkeyboards. Which is kinda how I cured my keyboard obsession. These people were "groupbuying" keyboards for thousands of dollars. And they would get those keyboards in like a year .. or two. Sometimes longer. Same for keycaps. And the keycap colors wouldn't even match properly half the time. They would spend 500+ dollars for a second hand super shiney, heavily used keycap set. And the thing is, I can almost guarantee you most of those boards aren't worth sh today. I remember one guy shared a picture of a bunch of keyboard cases and each one cost thousands.
Very beautiful build, I personally love it's aesthetic. The smaller complaints you expressed in this keyboard is probably the lack of experience and the lack of better tooling, and more talented engineers in Germany nowadays. The Chinese now have better machines, and engineers for keyboard manufacturing.
I've heard that here and there but never knew this keyboard thin could actually be that expensive, holy !!! Oh, btw, could someone help me where to buy this macropad? 10:05

I am still waiting for my pvd parts I probably will never get. The communication by Maschine is abysmal. In the end I feel like I spent too much money on it being manipulated by fancy adverts.
There's just so much Cherry MX switches and any kind of design can carry and this goes deep into the side of diminishing returns. The sound is eerily close to what I have in my Tiger Lite 80 build using Morandi switches, which is actually bit exceptional from a solid body metal case. If I would put two grands on a keyboard it better come with new old stock complicated Alps, pristine beam springs, buckling springs or anything else but the Cherry MX stuff.
