I stole so much from Jake’s playing on the first two badlands albums… Not that I was anywhere near his technical ability. It was more about the aggression and sheer abandonment of care that I applied to writing my own things. Great video, David!🤠
Perfect timing as I’ve been on a Badlands and Red Dragon Cartel binge lately. And Jake is my favorite Ozzy guitarist. But he really shined after that when he was able to be himself.
I got to be on the bill with Badlands twice and they were outstanding both times. Ray was spot on too. It was towards the end of his life but he was amazing.
I do not write in Jake's style even remotely. But I am always inspired by the way he plays. When I get back to him, I always here something new. TH-cam especially, find him make a mistake live. He plays Randy's parts with respect and acumen and somehow makes them his own. My favorite live player and when I get in a rut, I know his playing will make me feel good about working harder.
I have no words. I mean, I do, but they won’t do the value in this lesson justice. Jake is just awesome. You nailed those phrases. One of them is from High Wire and I never quite figured it out until you laid it out brilliantly. Thank you!!
I bought mine as there was ad in the paper: "Move over Ozzy, Jake is back!" Rhino Bucket was promoted same way: "Move over AC/DC, Rhino Bucket is here" Good days.
Eddie Trunk discussed on his radio show why the Badlands albums are out of print and staying that way indefinitely. It all comes down to the families of the girls that singer Ray Gillen infected with HIV before he died of AIDS. Whenever an independent label picks up the option to re-master and re-release these albums, the families inevitably put the kibosh on it, because they don't want Ray's estate profiting after what he did to those girls. That's why we're only left with the option of finding 2nd-hand copies of the albums at exorbitantly outrageous prices.
Thanks David! Jake is one of my all time fave guitarists! And I loved Badlands as well! I wish he would go back to that 70s type of sound and playing. Damn, I had both of those albums, but on cassette. Edit: I got to see them.when they toured with Great White and Tesla. That was a bad ass show!
So were going to get a John Sykes licks from 1989 from blue murder? Imo johns best palette of work and is the definitive John Sykes playing ive ever heard
Great episode … I met Jake backstage during the Ultimate Sun tour with Metallica opening up … not sure what happened but he was a perfect fit for Ozzy after RR passed away … ZW changed the Ozzy sound and made him what he is today … Jake had all of the flash and techniques to go between RR and the modern players of the day … he is an exceptional player who found himself on the outside looking in … 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
Badlands Live Chicago 1991 and Live Dallas TX 1991 lick lesson. You will see Jake E Lee tapping harmonics with his right hand it sounds like he is tapping double stops/diad intervals and the chords he uses are not just normal major and minor chords. The Chords he does is wide spread types using a phase 90 it sounds like to get those jimmy page those chords and very subtle phaser works good with those wide spread chords and slash chords
I didn't know you'd talked about the dominant pentatonic before. That's awesome! I don't know of any other instructor who has mentioned it. I call it the _Jeff Beck scale._ lols
You have a wide scope of right hand techniques. I'd love a video of some of your favorites, both pick and fingers and also going back and forth between the two. Some great bends btw tonight. Thanks
I've always been a fan of Jake! Great more licks! BTW I think have that First Badlands Album in my moms attic ? I have a bunch shredder albums! I have Steeler ,A couple Racer X albums all on vinyl! MSG ,Rainbow, some stuff from Shrapnel Records with Mike Varney!
Dave, you 💯 HAVE to do a lesson on your picking. Its like your stabbing the strings, do a flicky thing, and economy picking. I cant figure it out, but it seems to work tremendously. Please please help
Dave's done at least one video on picking technique. Awesome request though, and I would be interested in a deeper dive myself. You may want to check Troy Grady. Not my favorite player or anything, but he's done the most extensive dive into picking technique I ever heard of. I'd also say that in particular, watching Steve Morse's technique carefully would be a good idea. His alternate picked arpeggio's on _Tumeni Notes_ is astounding.
The third lick is on the first Badlands album!! Winters Call, I think. That album was the second coming of Led Zeppelin for me. Fourth lick is also on that album. EDIT: Lick 3 is from High Wire at 2:03 here: th-cam.com/video/l6LXVqetMeo/w-d-xo.html Lick 4 (Bonus Lick) is from Winter's Call at 3:20: th-cam.com/video/ZVZfm9-k4KI/w-d-xo.html
Really enjoy your videos David! You always pick great players, cool licks and you play them so well with a nice touch and tone! I loved Jake's playing growing up, got to see Badlands live, incredible band. Also thanks for the tip about the LP prices. I have several copies of the CDs and both albums on vinyl. Now how about a Late Night Lesson featuring some Gary Moore licks from his rock era circa '78-'89?! Cheers.
David, on that pentatonic lick around 7:20, I’m guessing you are pulling off on the B string and picking the G string? This lick has tripped me up for years, and you seem to have the magic sauce here for it. Thanks
Those first two badlands albums were outstanding. Jake and the band got the absolute square root of nothing in terms of marketing support because a few industry insiders hated the bones of Ray G . The licks off both albums could keep you busy for a good few weeks. I’ll never sell my copies I got them on vinyl cassette and cd. Rest in peace Ray Gillan what an awesome vocalist he was.
Atlantic hated Jake too. They tried to replace him with Doug Aldrich. Best Badlands interviews ever search Greg Chaisson interviewed by Brian Sword Double Stop podcast. Nearly 3 hours of amazing info in two interviews. A must listen for any Badlands fans.
Stellar video! I once had a chance to see Badlands, but somehow managed not to get there. To me this was supposed to be next big thing but somehow it got swept under the carpet. Very promising band and in the end very sad tale.
you know what it sucks that he got fired from Ozzy, not sure how his blues licks would have worked with Ozzy. I mean at that point with Ozzy, BS and RR didn't really sound to bluesy or hard rock? More so heavy, and classical. BATM to me had classical guitar stuff in it.
Like Jake e Lee's life story like his playing but he got screwed by both ozzy and well.., think you get that i mean several people screwed him over in music. He met his dream made and made it.
Lick #3 has a mistake. He is not playing a chromatic line there. It's pulloffs on the G string, frets 15-14-12 ( I notice youre tuned 1/2 step down like Jake was). So its blues scale, not chromatic... I remember learning that lick from the Badlands album a long time ago.
Love your channel brother. I got a guitarist you'd love to check out. I'm from nova Scotia Canada. And I have a Canadian gem for you. Brian mcleoud from Chilliwack and the headpins. Check out Chilliwack s full album opus x. You may recognize a few hits like what you Guna do and secret information. Check out one of the last songs called your Guna last. I thing you would have an awesome video on your hands with that. Especially where the guitarist Brian Mcleoud is from my home province Nova Scotia. Many blessings man I hope you take this idea into consideration because it would be a big hit for Canadian guitarists rock lovers like you and i
Could you please show the solo for funkadelics get off your ass and jam done by a junkie off the street who played later with rod stewart and rare earthpaul warren
I loved Jake with Ozzy. But Badlands saw his playing elevate to a whole new level.
Is rhythm playing was underrated, he didn't have to play solos his rhythm playing was so great
I stole so much from Jake’s playing on the first two badlands albums… Not that I was anywhere near his technical ability. It was more about the aggression and sheer abandonment of care that I applied to writing my own things.
Great video, David!🤠
Perfect timing as I’ve been on a Badlands and Red Dragon Cartel binge lately. And Jake is my favorite Ozzy guitarist. But he really shined after that when he was able to be himself.
jake e lee is a infinite source of cool licks, resources and guitar tricks, that's why i love him!
I got to be on the bill with Badlands twice and they were outstanding both times. Ray was spot on too. It was towards the end of his life but he was amazing.
That 2nd lick was really bluesy-tasty!
I loved Jake e Lee in badlands soo much I made one of my guitars after his white strat.
Attention all! Go now and listen to "A fine pink mist"!
You're welcome!
My all-time favorite guitar player man thanks for doing this!
Also David your picking hand is sooo buttery smooth😎👍
Thanks for, another great lesson, what a great player Jake. E. Lee is, and yes i am very lucky, and have the first Bandlands on vinyl🙂
Jake is the most versatile guitarist out there. He can change styles on a dime.
Thanks B 🐓!
Badlands record is incredible and highly underrated
I do not write in Jake's style even remotely. But I am always inspired by the way he plays. When I get back to him, I always here something new. TH-cam especially, find him make a mistake live. Wish i could see this channel 20 years ago when i was 16 ...
That second lick from "Lord Knows" is killer...
I have no words. I mean, I do, but they won’t do the value in this lesson justice. Jake is just awesome. You nailed those phrases. One of them is from High Wire and I never quite figured it out until you laid it out brilliantly. Thank you!!
Jake is a very underrated player
I bought these on vinyl when they were released. Had no idea of the value. Interesting. I still have them.
When I was a teenager I had about 11 extremely rare bootleg Led Zeppelin albums.
Sadly they were all stolen.
There can never be too much Jake E. Lee licks / riffs , etc. !!! Keep em coming ?! Great video !! That Dave !!
another great video, thanks!
I still have the first album on vinyl. Bought it the week it came out. I was lucky enough to see them on that tour. I still love that album.
I bought mine as there was ad in the paper: "Move over Ozzy, Jake is back!" Rhino Bucket was promoted same way: "Move over AC/DC, Rhino Bucket is here" Good days.

Tragic all round really...how sad
I have the CD releases of their stuff
You can still find the CDs for Badlands for around $20 bucks.
On eBay.‘forgot to mention that.
Yes, my favorite Ozzy guitar player. Just a monster.
Thanks David! Jake is one of my all time fave guitarists! And I loved Badlands as well! I wish he would go back to that 70s type of sound and playing. Damn, I had both of those albums, but on cassette.

JAKES the man

Am I the only one who would be happy to have 1/10th of Dave’s knowledge of the guitar??....cheese-n-crakers!!....rock on my brother!!!!!
Great video! Paul Gilbert is the master of that "half-picked half-legato" thing, too.
Got both Ozzy and Badlands on LPs myself :D
Fantastic teacher and player. Learn alot here thanks 😊
Jake E. Lee anywhere near the Osbourne trash factory was pearls before swine. An amazing musician serving his inferiors.
That first Badlands album still slaps...
Another great lesson 👍😎🎸
This is fantastic, thank you! Badlands was amazing. Would love to see you do the same for some Voodoo Highway licks!
Jake's such a great guy and player! Thanks for this!

Do some "Red Dragon Cartel". Jake's one of my favorite guitar players!
I like Dominate Pentonic Scale, kinda has that Mxylodian flavor to it.

I love Jake playing 🤩 Love Badlands and absolutely I love Ray Gillen's voice .
Kick Ass!
Excellent! Amazing player! I'm less familiar with the Badlands material. Thanks, David!
I love his rhythm work on Ultimate Sin & Bark @ the Moon. Can’t understand why he gets slagged these days? Thanks 🍺’ski.
Cheers m8, tanx for a great video!
I didn't know you'd talked about the dominant pentatonic before. That's awesome!
I don't know of any other instructor who has mentioned it.
I call it the _Jeff Beck scale._ lols
I saw Jake w/ Badlands many years ago at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. He blew me away with his playing & guitar tones
You have a wide scope of right hand techniques. I'd love a video of some of your favorites, both pick and fingers and also going back and forth between the two. Some great bends btw tonight. Thanks
I had a Jake e Lee lesson called learn to burn from a guitar magazine in the mid to late 80s definitely a influence for me thanks for the lesson❤️👍
Keep the Jake stuff coming! 👏
Love Jake licks
Thank you so much for that lesson!
I've always been a fan of Jake! Great more licks! BTW I think have that First Badlands Album in my moms attic ? I have a bunch shredder albums! I have Steeler ,A couple Racer X albums all on vinyl! MSG ,Rainbow, some stuff from Shrapnel Records with Mike Varney!

dude! nice one on getting this tone nailed! always as a fan! kudos from santiago de chile David
Jake is a famous fine guitarist
David, on that pentatonic lick around 7:20, I’m guessing you are pulling off on the B string and picking the G string?
This lick has tripped me up for years, and you seem to have the magic sauce here for it.
Thanks
He’s pretty much my favorite person on earth. As nice as he is talented not to mention wrote the book on cool
Great Lesson! How is that V-Amp Pro?
Mr brewster you need to feature jeff waters from annihalator that guy is a riff machine with creativity
I would love to see some Gus G licks
I second that idea

Great video! I really enjoy Jake's playing. I think Zakk was influenced by Jake. He sounds more like Jake than Randy. It's that heavy blues influence.
Jake didn’t get 1/1000th of the acclaim that he deserves.
Excellent vid. How about some Tommy Bolin (Solo) ? One of Jake's big influences and a monster as well.
When are you gonna touch on Criss Oliva’s playing? He’s one of the most underrated players to ever exist...RIP
he did three for all of Criss
Stellar video!
I once had a chance to see Badlands, but somehow managed not to get there. To me this was supposed to be next big thing but somehow it got swept under the carpet.
Very promising band and in the end very sad tale.
A few licks of Michael Romeo's Dark chaper ?😁
Please do 3 Joe Holmes licks :D
I just discovered Badlands third album "Dusk".. I believe it's made up of some demos it's got a different drummer on it but it is an awesome album
