Absolutely!! I think that Ray Gillien originally left Black Sabbath to be in Blue Murder, but I am not sure what happened with that, but I love that he got the Badlands gig. Both are amazing bands and both have amazing guitar players.
Greg chaisson said it best- Ray was the best singer of his generation. Those who know know. He just stood there and sang the living shit out of those songs. He was a true singer, not just a pretty face. Jake is a monster. When I heard this album back in 89, my jaw hit the floor when I heard Ray- I was a huge Coverdale fan. I knew this guy was something special
This band was so dead-on excellent. I actually got to audition for this band right after Eric left (to join Kiss, maybe?). Talk about scary: it was an open cattle call set for 10am on a Saturday morning at local recording studio “Cerius Recording” - A really nice (and expensive!) kind of place. They were calling in drummers every 5 minutes, they'd go in and leave by another exit, which made it seem like they were being killed, or eaten. Or both. Everyone had to sign in upon arrival on a clip board at the front desk. When my turn came I walked in to the main room, there were only Jake & his manager. And a drum set. His manager said "You've got 3 minutes: impress us". And that’s what I tried to do. Afterwards I left through a back door leading out into the parking lot. Needless to say I didn't get the gig. Another Phoenician did (a friend of Greg's), the dude from Racer X, I believe, got the job. Seeing on how Greg & him played together in a previous band, I'm not too sure anyone else who showed up that morning had any kind of real chance at getting the gig. Still, it was one hell of a morning that I shall remember fondly, forever. Plus, it makes for a great true story.....
+Malcolm Bliss excellent story dude.I'm of the opinion it's who FITS the band,Not that the guy sucks or anything.Love the Badlands and I've been asked to join a few big bands but didn't feel it was a good match. My buds tell me I should've went with the paying gig,but I hold music to it's truest, highest form.Always have.Wrong or right.
+Force666666 well, I did get to play with this Irish band in a Las Vegas Casino for a full year. 5 nights a week, 4 hours a night, 9pm to 1am, Wed thru Sun. I was the only non Irish guy, we did all Pogues, Waterboys, plus all the hits of the 60s.... the 1760s. we punkified all these old Irish drinking songs. made $1000 a week too. best money ever playing drums. dream come true. but the bandleader was a dick and I didn't reup. he had been on a season of mtvs real world, so that opens a lot of doors. better to be lucky than good!
+Malcolm Bliss Thanks for sharing that story... I wasn't real fond of this band when it first surfaced in late 80's,, too bluesy I guess. But now, I really can appreciate it and like it a lot. Of course Jake being in it:) I like knowing that Jake was able to express himself the way he wanted without the restraints of Ozzy' band which makes it even more enjoyable to watch and listen to knowing that.
I'd rather listen to this bad recording of Ray than just about any good recording of the other singers out there...he was simply...the best...RIP Sweet Ray!

Anyone remember The Reseda Country Club? 1987 I was just 18 there to catch a show. I looked behind me and standing in the doorway was Ray Gillan. I went to meet him and ask what's happening with Black Sabbath. He was just 'let go' and was pretty pissed about it. He went into detail about the swiping of his vocals and replaced by Tony Martin. So I asked what he's gonna be doing. Ray asks me if I'm familiar with Jake E. Lee. Of course, Jake was just 'let go' from Ozzy and was my favorite guitar player ( I was at his last show with Ozzy - benefit concert at The Palladium in February 1987 - front row beeotches) That was a lengthy conversation I had with Ray, maybe 10 - 15 mins. Very open and honest guy I felt. I read the release date of the Badlands album and went to Tower Records in Northridge (now a pet hotel) sat in the parking lot and heard the whole album. Amazing. I may have missed maybe 3 shows here in the L.A. area but caught all the rest. The Troubadour, The Palace (now The Avalon), The Ventura Theater, etc, etc. So now it's on with Red Dragon Cartel. I never miss a show.
Yes, lengthy conversation , I would say!! I like The Red Dragon Cartel , but Nothing will be as good for Jake now, without Ray Gillen in front singing!!! That Guy was just Majestic!!! An Angel of Rock Singers!!! THE BEST! Besides PLANT!!!
I was lucky enough to see Badlands once. I believe they were warming up for Great White? Holy wall of fucking sound! Soooo loud! After the show we were hanging out around the buses smoking a joint and Ray popped his head out… “what’s up mates? Mind if I join you?” So, we burned that tree with Ray, made some small talk, and off he goes…What a band! What a voice! What a fucking memory!

Thats because every part of the song is a bass solo and the bass is the girth of any band and deserves said respect. Guitar players are a dime a dozen.
Brian McGilvray No greater truth ever spoken !!! Most bass players never get the cred they deserve, unless they play in one of your top selling, #1 hit song playing bands !!! Greg is a phenomenal bass player and background vocalist, very underrated indeed !!! I love Jake and his guitar playing, as he is one of my all time fav guitarists, but without that thundering bottom end you get from the bass and drums; the sound just wouldn’t be the same !!! That guitar just can’t do it by itself alone; you need that oomph from the bass and drums to kick it in the ass and get it all going !!! I have always leaned towards the guitar players first, as I have recently at the ripe old age of 53, bought my first guitar and amp to learn to play as a hobby !!! But I’ve always had a respect for the bass players and drummers as well, for their prowess, on their chosen instrument !!! Also recently I feel very honored and privileged, not to mention giddy like a little kid, to have Greg accept me as a friend on his Facebook page !!! Just awesome to be associated with him in any way; being that he was and still is a ROCKSTAR !!! And yes he does like and comment on some of my posts from time to time; just awesome to know that they are real people just like us in real life tho, behind all the rockstar stuff !!! Sorry I’ll quit rambling now !!! LOL
two phenomenal front men, jake e lee and ray gillen, as brief as it was for them they were one of the best rock bands of all time. nobody better live. period.
Allegedly and with the knowledge that he probably had contracted AIDS,and being in total denial according to JEL in an old interview,he(Gillen)continued with the lifestyle of a 'Rock Star' thus endangering the people he was being intimate with.Alledgedly.As a result of this the royalties accrued from the first self-titled album, along with Voodoo Highway(and maybe Dusk),became the posthumous subject of litigation and these were withdrawn from sale .How much of this is true I'm not sure, Jake E.Lee wasn't really aware that people were after the late Ray Gillens estate with a view to claiming compensation as,once again allegedly the parties involved claimed he had infected them with the AIDS virus. This is just speculation but was put out there via several interviews in the US with people supposedly in the know.
@@user-pl2th5wj2h There's nothing "alleged", nor is it "speculative". As a high school teen musician when this came out I was blown away! Still think “Devils Stomp” is one of the top ten songs of all time! (First song they wrote). Such a great band that never reached where they were destined to be. Still a top 5 debut album of all time!
A great band lost in the vortex of changing musical tatstes. This was no glam hair band but pure unadulterated rock n roll with no gimmicks. Jake is just incredible here.
Definitely one of the underrated bands of the 80's hard rock / heavy metal scene. Ray had such superb range and vibrato. A damn shame he's no longer with us. Jake, Greg and Eric were all top-notch at their chosen instruments and really gelled well as a band. Jake's tone, riffs and solos simply kicked ass!
It’s like watching Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in a different era. I was 14 then still my favorite band! No one sounded like this in 1989. They were the one and only 👍🏻
1st Badlands album is and always will be a classic. A raw bluesy rock swagger. Ray had a voice for sure. Love the song SEASONS on it. I’ve listened to it so many times and it never gets old. RIP Ray!!! Your vocals live on .
Hey Chassion, you could really lay it down back then (as I’m sure you still can)! You were always in it for the music, not the star status. You always have been the real deal. Proud to know you sir.
Fuck, man. Everyone was amazing. I was at this show. I'm that old now. 😪 Between Jake and Ray, their live work was insane. Crazy part was that I saw Depeche Mode 3 days after. I've always been on the diverse side. 🍻
A highly underrated and overlooked band. Love these guys. Thought for sure they were gonna be huge. Can't believe Ray Gillen is dead. He was truly a gifted singer
Are you MF’ing kidding me?? This shits insanely good! Saw them at Great Woods in Mansfield,MA. 7/15/89 with Loudneas and TNT and I’ve NEVER been the same🔥
Ray Gillen is so so good in this concert. I have yet to see a singer who can even touch him. He was truly an astounding talent. He also sang smart. Sung the song the right way every time. He is sorely missed and remarkably underappreciated and underrated
+sabbathtribute No kidding.I saw Badlands live in a small club in Orange County.I can't even remember the name of the place. But Ray's voice sent chills up my spine live.He had a flamethrower voice. And Jake. One of my all time faves.
@@K3vinK yeah hes a murderer...he also tried to molest a female vocalist of another up coming band but everyone hushed it cuz he died shortly later. Not only aids but he also had herpes. Nasty dude but great singer.
I Had the "Great" Chance to see this guy live much closer to where I live then this video is on , and I will say Jake was that night one of the best live performer's there is , with all he does and has got going on , it simply amaze's me that he can still keep that guitar in tune for pretty much the whole show !! AAA+++ to Him : )
The first time I heard Badlands was when they debuted their first album on radio station WVVX Chicago while going to get some beers in Hammond, In. back when you could get beers at 19 years old LOL. I tell you what, Ray and Jake were the best. To this day I still listen to this album and it doesn't get old. Going on 52 years old and still Jamming and having those cold beers! RIP Ray, you had a killer voice even while singing live that I haven't heard top yours yet or that ever will.
I'm with ya bro! I'm from the same town! And I heard it at the same time! No one will ever match the vocals of Ray and the guitar playing of Jake! R.I.P. Ray!!!
They were right until the very end. The final tour was amazing. In its review, Kerrang said “this a funeral you must not miss” (this was a reference to the serious falling out Ray and Jake had had by then; the tour was done as band members felt obligated).
Thank you for this rare awesome treat! They were incredible. Audience sounded extremely lame after that kick ass show. Ray, miss you. RIP. One of the greatest voices in rock!
Love these guys still in 2022..Been a fan since 89 or 90.And have their album. This is what dudes like Dimebag grew up on.And Van Halen Mean Street- Fair Warning.
I was fortunate enough to be head of security back in 1987 through 91 and I work for Badlands 87 and 89 amazing show! The first one in 87 I remember Jake being a solo and it sounded like two guitars just shredding it but it was just Jake alone! The name of the club was Dallas City Limits exclamation point was not a big venue, but they fucking rocked!!
It's 2024, and still Ray Gillen remains a mystery. A truly unique and singular talent. I imagine losing the Ozzy gig was child's play for Jake compared to losing Ray.
Had the privilege of seeing Badlands open up for Great White and Tesla at Darien Lake in NY state on 08/15/1989. A great show and tour. Miss those days...
wherezmyz I was a big fan of both Tesla and Badlands (I had bought Badland's first album and was blown away, I am a HUGE Jake E. Lee fan) so it was a highlight of my youth for sure. Badlands just crushed it that night. How Badlands was never huge is beyond me. I miss those times.
I’m back again because nobody’s ever posted another live show with any real quality. I saw these guys twice that year. After all these years I think the title album “Badlands” is the finest set of songs in the entire genre. This was absolutely PEAK hard rock. There isn’t a bad song on the album, Jake E is so friggin TASTY. And criminally underrated these days. Ray came with a fabulous set of lungs, as well as those great looks. What a perfect man to sing these songs and front that band. What a killer set this is. Glasses up for what was Badlands in 1989, and for what might have been if they could only have survived the storm.
Great upload! Always loved his live tone and playing. Just seemed really raw and unprocessed. Not loving the bass but could also be the recording. Singer is spot on every note. Great band that should have been bigger.
I used to sing several Badlands tunes in a band I sang with. I absolutely LOVED doing Badlands songs….i loved doing lynch mob songs too…George Lynch’s band.
There was Ratt, Motley crue, Poison, Warrant, Skid row then there was Badlands!!!! These guys were raw straight Rock n Roll!!! No gimmicks!! No licking their guitars!!! How many bands were playing Blues based 70s Rock n Roll? Badlands was one..Tesla, Greatwhite, Cinderella, YNT,...Badlands was a rebirth of Free, huumble pie and Led Zep!!!!
Nailed it. Badlands was retro 70's before the retro 70's was even a thing. I remember buying their CD in the store and there was a sticker on the cover with a short album review on it. I remember it said, "raw, uncompromising rock with no remorse."
This Mountain View concert is a motherlode bag of tricks from Jake, I see a new trick every time, and it's not just the trick itself, it's the way he delivers it with showmanship and style like Jimi or SRV, you guys know what I'm saying? Imagine a live jam : Jake N SRV or Jimi, they all have the same vibe and spirit, in my very humble opinion of playing for 33 years. I will never get tired of this concert. be cool ya'll, \m/

If you don't a copy of the Badlands debut album go and get yourself a copy.
Ray and Jake are on top of their game and it is a total kick ass album
Evan Jeffries Ray and Jake??? How bout the whole band. That album rips my face off still to this day
Good luck finding it for a reasonable price.
Damm these guys were so bad ass , I feel so fortunate that I got to see them. RIP Ray.
I gotta see this type of shit to remind me what's possible with the guitar. Man, Jake playing is just so soulful while absolutely killing it.
Jake is the reason I picked up the guitar.
1st Badlands album is and always will be a classic. A raw bluesy rock swagger. Ray had a voice for sure. Love the song SEASONS on it. I’ve listened to it so many times and it never gets old. RIP Ray!!! Your vocals live on .
I can listen to Jake play all day! He is so great! 23:11 just to start...Wow GREATNESS This band!!!! Out of this world. pure rock and roll greatness
Stevie Ray Vaughan on steroids 😆
Would have LOVED to seen them live back in the day!! Jake E. Lee just amazes me!!
I saw them around this time and while I was already a fan of Jake, it blew me away that he could just solo all night if he wanted to. What a musician.
Jake's guitar tone live 🔥
Ray was an amazing rock n roll singer
Jake just became my favourite guitar player...unreal!
your lucky, especially to this version. I prefer Eric Singer than their 2nd drummer.
Where was this show?
@@lesliecampbell1949 Cal Expo
@@lesliecampbell1949 was not.
@@lesliecampbell1949 Sorry, this was the Shoreline Amphitheater show a few days after seeing them at Cal Expo.
Jake was at his prime here. He's dead on and enjoying it. You dont see this type of talent anymore. Ray Kicks ass! R.i.p. my friend.
Two great forgotten rock bands: Badlands and Blue Murder!!
Absolutely!! Both bands have amazing albums and incredible guitar players. I listen to both bands very often.
John Katsoudas I'd add Lynch Mob in there as well.
So great, they may not have known how good they were. I'm 56 and still listen to Badlands often. Thanks for this uopload.
A highly underrated and overlooked band. Love these guys. Thought for sure they were gonna be huge. Can't believe Ray Gillen is dead. He was truly a gifted singer
Damn straight he was. He was one of Chris Cornell's influences.
That’s exactly how I Feel!!
@@CaptainBackFatdid Chris actually say that?
Ray was one of the best hard rock voices ever.
He also knowingly gave a bunch of people AIDS.
@@K3vinK yeah hes a murderer...he also tried to molest a female vocalist of another up coming band but everyone hushed it cuz he died shortly later. Not only aids but he also had herpes. Nasty dude but great singer.
KKnopp 🖕were you there? Nor was I.
Tony Fuentes I wasn’t there when Lincoln got shot. But it still happened.
I Had the "Great" Chance to see this guy live much closer to where I live then this video is on , and I will say Jake was that night one of the best live performer's there is , with all he does and has got going on , it simply amaze's me that he can still keep that guitar in tune for pretty much the whole show !! AAA+++ to Him : )
Badlands: The Greatest band only a few discovered. I saw them at The Stone Pony in NJ OMG GREAT!
R.I.P. Ray!!!
@@davesdrum Right On!
my god, I forget how good Ray was......
Wasn’t He Zakk??? He just out-did everyone I’ve ever heard!!!!
R.I.P. Ray....what a voice and Jake....killer combo,sadly missed.
Saw them on that tour with Telsa and Great White when they were in Muskegon, MI... Badlands stole the show!
Never heard of these guys before. Damn this is badass.
This band is on fire at this point
They were right until the very end. The final tour was amazing. In its review, Kerrang said “this a funeral you must not miss” (this was a reference to the serious falling out Ray and Jake had had by then; the tour was done as band members felt obligated).
First time I worked for them, Eric singer was the original drummer he was badass!!
Thank you for this rare awesome treat! They were incredible. Audience sounded extremely lame after that kick ass show. Ray, miss you. RIP. One of the greatest voices in rock!
"It feels so good to be so bad."
Real music. A rarity, these days.
1989.
"If it's to loud your to old"
This is an amazing capture of one hell of a band! Late 80s blooze at its best.
Very underrated band. If only Ray were with us today.
Love these guys still in 2022..Been a fan since 89 or 90.And have their album. This is what dudes like Dimebag grew up on.And Van Halen Mean Street- Fair Warning.
Such an underrated band! They are so tight! One of my faves to this day! I love the second incarnation of this band! More precise and tight!
its a shame Jake never got the respect he deserves.
+Rob D for real
He did in my house.
He is still my guitar hero. His new RDC stuff is really good.
Ive never heard anything but great things about him.Dont know how u figure that.
Jake gets the respect he deserves. The Ozzy fans love him
I was fortunate enough to be head of security back in 1987 through 91 and I work for Badlands 87 and 89 amazing show! The first one in 87 I remember Jake being a solo and it sounded like two guitars just shredding it but it was just Jake alone! The name of the club was Dallas City Limits exclamation point was not a big venue, but they fucking rocked!!
What a voice. Super group.
Lots of hair and lots of straight up rock & roll!!!! Jake E. Lee pure bad ass guitar!!! Back in the day when music didn't suck!!
I'm only a teeny bit jealous!!!!
I was at that same show. My very first concert at age 15. 2nd row. Awesome!
wherezmyz I was a big fan of both Tesla and Badlands (I had bought Badland's first album and was blown away, I am a HUGE Jake E.
"Great band that should have been bigger." That's spot on.
MUCH bigger. Saw them in 1989 and the blew Great White and Tesla off the stage.
My fave band of all time! Ray gillans voice was #1!! RIP
What a band...Jake is on fire, and the band itself is so tight. Thank you for this post!
Damn Ray Gillen was good.Loved this band. Thanks for posting
Ray easily in the top 5 live singers of all time. His pitch is about as good as it gets live, and this was back before in-ears. Just amazing.
I saw them at a club called Exposure54 on Santa Monica blvd. I think 92 They were fucking amazing!
i was at this concert. final show of the Cinderella Long Cold Winter tour, Oct 1989
I Agree!!
!!!"I Couldn't Of Got More Frickin' Obsessed Over Badlands First Album"!!!
Same here. I’m STILL obsessed with it.
The great Ray Gillen! He died so young but still he has a lot of fantastic songs and performances...
Dayummm!!! Real Music and Real Musicians!!! The rawness of this show is a nice smack in the face!!!
First-Timer, HUH????
One of the best live bands I ever saw!
Definitely one of the Greatest singers ever! and a great guy as well! miss him!!
Jake E Lee & Eric Singer together! Yes!
This band is one of the greatest
I am so glad that Jake got to shine some more after Ozzy!@ He is amazing!
Eric Singer. Kicked ass.
Saw them in ‘89
Jaw then proceeded to drop to the floor!!!! 🔥
JJJAKE you are sooo amazingly talented!
