    I saw Maiden twice on the Somewhere on tour tour, went to the Birmingham Odeon (England) on the Thursday night, came out after the show and they were still selling tickets for the Saturday night gig, so I bought one. Dave Murray did a solo spot with just him on stage and I remember him playing "Walking in the air" .

    Judas Priest , Iron Maiden …………….. surely it will be Saxon next 😂 Great lesson again. A couple of Halloween’s ago you showed a tapping lick by Michael Angelo Batio. It was from a film called Shock ‘em dead . When I heard it I thought that if ever I could play it I would consider my life complete. Well it’s taken a couple of years of giving it a go and I have just about cracked it together with loads of other stuff and it’s all down to you channel . I just wanted to say thanks for all the work you have done and hopefully all the work you are going to do ! I’ll never be where I want to be as a guitarist but I’m a hell of a lot nearer than I would have been without your help.
    Nice one DB 👍

      I think he had two, I've seen one which was some kind of blue-green'ish sunburst with a maple fretboard.

    I have always appreciated Dave Murray's style, technique and skill. He stands out among the "IM 3", even though all 3 are of immense guitar talent.
    When the discussion about heavy metal guitar heroes is happening I've always felt that Dave Murray and Glenn Tipton from Judas Priest get lost and forgotten in the conversation because there are so many who "showcase" themselves more within their bands .... whereas Murray, Tipton, etc all play and solo to serve the song and it's thematic song structure.
    Back in the early 80s when all my guitar playing friends were chopping together their own VH styled Frankenstrat or a Vai "Greenie Meanies" etc .... I had so much respect for Dave Murray (and to keep up with all my super-Strat making friends) .... I created my own "Murray-Strat" ... which ended up being the guitar I used 90% of the time for the next 8 years (in a personal collection of around 15 or 16 high quality guitars, too) .... the Murray-Strat just had so much practical "working musician" to it ... all the fancy superstrats and Vs and SGs in my collection almost became obsolete, other than having some "onstage coolness" to them. lol
    Great video ... good tips, a guitarist is never too old to learn (or re-learn) anything :)

    • @flagace4889
      @flagace4889 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with your comment but another important factor that affects Dave Murray's popularity amongst players is that he does not write a lot of somgs. Smith shines a lot because of his songwriting skills.

    • @RakelaK67
      @RakelaK67 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flagace4889 very true... In the history of the band he's only got writing credits on 22 songs... well short of Smiths total.... I've never tried to compare them as they compliment each other perfectly. Murray has a very precise attack.... his right hand is very accurate... and that translates to solos that are very "notey" whereas Smith, as a songwriter, tends to solo in a style that has a lot of bends and he tends to hammer on and pull off on a lot of notes rather than aggressively pick like Murray. Because of his songwiritng skills I always describe Smiths solos as being very lyrical in style. Gers is almost a perfect merger of both styles. +, as many don't know, Gers is very musically "educated", unlike his partners who were self taught. There is no band with that longevity who can carry that 3 guitar partnership from studio to stage as well as IM do. There is so much that can go wrong onstage... but they seem to be able to lock in to each other and blend in a way that you wouldn't expect in a heavy metal band.
      I've seen them live on the Beast, Piece, Slave and 7Son tours... and on more recent tours...
      We're all lucky to live in an era where we have been treated to such an amazing band. I can't think of any other band other than Rush who played at such a high level, for so many years, but always kept evolving and changing so they never became just a tribute act to themselves and their glorious past.

    • @flagace4889
      @flagace4889 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RakelaK67 You are so accurate in your analysis. I would say that Smith is primarily a blues/rock player in his riffs but mainly in his solos. Murray's style is so fluid. He is the legatos king. It seems so effortless. And you are right, Gers is a mix of the two. He can be bluesy but very aggressive or presenting a melodic light touch. I think he is highly underrated. He has very good songwriting skills. Just listen to Tattooed Millionaire album or Dance of death. I think non guitar players do not take him seriously because he goofs a lot onstage. But there is a reason why he did not leave when Smith came back. They complete each other very well. Like Rush, a band that is as good if not better live in concert.

    • @Nghilifa
      @Nghilifa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flagace4889 Janick actually offered to leave when Adrian and Bruce were coming back in 99, but Steve Harris wouldn't hear any of it (and rightly so, Janick is a terrific songwriter), just goes to show what kind of guy Janick is.

    • @user-ft4jo8ev1v
      @user-ft4jo8ev1v 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RakelaK67 That’s interesting because I’ve always felt the opposite when it comes to their styles. I think Murray is the one that focuses on loose bends and hammer ons (like in Run To The Hills for example) whereas Smith has a more precise picking style, with solos that sound more planned out. I agree with the rest though!

    Great job.
    There used to be a short video of Adrian in that era with that synth guitar set up that looks to be in a stadium somewhere with him standing in front of his rig and he has a big smile on his face and he hits a couple licks. It's very clear video, but very short.
    I've wanted to learn about his gear during that era for decades now. One of my favorites.

    Great video! I think the synth guitar he used had the guts of a Roland G707 ripped out and mounted into a Dinky body. The picture of that synth guitar with the black jackson headstock wasn't used live by Adrian, as the video clips show it to have a regular strat headstock. I read somewhere that the body of that synth guitar he used live cracked and split in two apparently. On the following tour, the 7th Son tour, he used a Lado Lazer guitar with synth controls instead, it's the black-blue burst guitar he plays in "The Clairvoyant" music video. You can also see him play it on "Can I Play With Madness" from the "Maiden England" video..
    Thanks for all that you do Dave!

    Adrian has always been the guy that over time started to improve and its noticeable around powerslave but very apparent on somewhere in time. Dave has pretty much stayed the same player and more than often sounds like he’s digging into a bag of licks that he always draws from and repeating the same solo.
