@@Despond Defying Gravity was released in 2001. Five years after his first bluesy rock album “Out of Nowhere”. That was a brief return to his neoclassical metal roots. Not that his blues rock stuff is bad. All of his albums are top notch.

Vinnie Moore explained modes in his second video and it made perfect sense. The guy’s picking and phrasing is next level. When Yngwie plays, it seems like the same thing, baroque neoclassical. But Vinnie has a melodicism to his playing that is more beautiful and less predictable. Tony MacAlpine is also insanely underrated. I still love to rip out The Taker or the Witch and the Priest.
IMO, Vinnie's musical maturity reached its peak in MELTDOWN, something in that album captivated me, the phrasing is almost impeccable, to this day I still listen to it regularly
Friend of mine, Greg Smith, played bass on Meltdown. Great guy and phenomenal player. Also played with Rainbow with Blackmore, Alice Cooper (I believe he helped Vinnie land that gig) Ted Nugent , Wendy O Williams to name a few. One of my fondest moments was getting to jam “Man On The Silver Mountain” with all the guys from that Rainbow era. What a blast. 💥
Vinnie has always been a huge source of inspiration for me and my playing styles. He has always remained in my top 5 since the mid 80's...such a articulate and utterly terrifying guitarist. Thanks David!🤘

As Time Slips By on Odyssey is absolutely gorgeous and articulate guitar playing. I asked him at a workshop about the solo, that climb at the end is breathtaking.
Time Odyssey was also my jam, to me it is the perfect neoclassical album moving in to perfect his fusion of classical with the jazz modal ideas seen in the first album. The production was better and the melodies outstanding. Just no meh pieces in there, everything had it’s charm and all of the jaw droppers.
Most people don’t understand that Vinnie might be the best, most original, and most technical player of the 80’s and 90’s. Most people hear that statement, and scoff. They figure if that were the case then more people would talk about him. I do not have an answer for that, but he is definitely the greatest.
It was kinda inevitable that guys like Vinnie and Paul Gilbert needed to step away from the pure shred style to get away from the Yngwie shadow. Even tho I totally love Vinnie's playing on Soldiers of the Night.

I like how you put the artists album/picture in background next to your late night lessons sign…. Saw Vinnie Moore with Jordan Rudess at a Connecticut Guitar Summer Workshop Camp…. He was doing all of “Minds Eye”….. he also let us record it!!!
Sorry, add to previous comment. Vinnie can merge let’s say C Ionian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian or D Dorian all over an A Aeolian bass line and resolve smoothly back to Am. We know these are all the same notes but the magic happens with all the fingering combinations. Sorry for the rant( my favorite technique) thanks for great post as usual.
That Ibanez VM1 "Splatter" in the thumbnail is on my wish list. I can't find one anywhere. I think only 25 to 50 were made. I've had the white one for about 15 years and I need the "splatter" to make the collection complete.

I predict that around 2028-2030 ... those of us that are still around, will start to see the beginnings of a new wave of guitar wizards similar (but not limited to) the kind of players that are mentioned here, in this video.
Interesting point about Aeolian mode. Vinnie is very comfortable with most of the modes of the major scale (his 80s instruction opening solo is still mind blowing) and Yngwie is not although I really enjoy them both.
if you haven't noticed he uses a $100 behringer Vamp pro that 20 years old and sound perfectly fine. So stop fussing about gear, it doesn't to help you.
Always thought that Vinnie sounded different than the other shredders of the 80s more a style like a modern day Al Dimeola sounded nothing like all the yngwie style players of the day

Vinnie Moore was the man back in the 80's. His clean sound, picking, and note choices were outstanding. His sense of melody and surprise turns were just amazing. My only problem with Vinnie was his remarks about how bad he felt and his choices of comments concerning Vicious Rumors-Soldiers of The Night. I'm telling you, Vinnie was on FIRE and the whole band and release are outstanding..easy Up Vinnie -Soldiers is a Classic..

There have been (and are) many shredders that made me go "man, what is that?". But Vinnie was one of the few who made me go "MAN. What IS that!". Not sure whether he has kept such a low profile by choice or for other reasons, but he is definitely underrated, albeit really loved by guitar players. Great video as usual, Dave!

UFO was a great band. I remember listening to them back in the early 70’s when they first came out. Awesome band! Looks like to me you’re doing an awesome job with those licks. I ran across another band I listened to back in the 70’s which was April Wine but somehow the Attitude album I had never heard before & It was a welcomed surprise when iTunes sent it in the suggestion music. Give it a listen to its got some killer riffs! I enjoy watching you play dude & your knowledge you share. 😎

"The Maze" album was easily his peak of playing and that unique spin on neoclassical/metal. After that he got way too bluesy and rock.
