  • As promised... We're doing two things in this Video...
1.) Finally Upgrading the spinning HGST HDD in our Hewlett Packard Envy 17t Laptop Review in 2020 to a 1TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD.
    amzn.to/302RQws
2.) Windows 10 Home was originally installed on this HP Laptop. We're now installing Windows 10 Pro on this new Samsung SSD.

We encounter two Problems and provide Solutions to those problems.
1.) Drive not connected - Verify connection to Motherboard. Connector has Flap above Connector. Make certain it's closed in down position.
2.) Windows Install Error Code: 0x70080022 - Change from USB 2.0 Port to USB 3.0 Port. And... Verify Drive is clean of partitions. Windows Install routine now gets confused if installing on top of a prior install. GPT vs MBR issues.
To access the original older Drive, we'll use the Vantec USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C 2.5 inch SATA SSD / HDD Storage Adapter (CB-STC31-2PB) -

I really liked the errors you ran into and your process for dealing with them. If you had planned this installation without errors it would not have been as educational. I noticed with Torx a T-25 may seem to fit satisfactorily for most people a screw with a t T-27 head just a bit loose. I would not use a driver that fits loose but those ones might. It can happen with screws that use Allen keys too. That may be one reason why it is common for them to be stripped. That would be because they might not realize there should be no play. I would also avoid places such a Harbor Freight like the plague when looking for Torx drivers. I once had a set of screw drivers they give away free with a coupon if you buy something. The first time I used one of them it as the flat tip for slotted screws. it twisted!! I threw them away immediately too!!

Great video! Just bought an HP 17z-cp000 custom assembled. Haven't booted it up. Can I change SSD, install Win10 with Media Creation Tool, then activate with product key? Or is it advisable to boot up, activate, put in new SSD, reinstall and reactivate? Thanks!

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sanford Shieh,
Welcome! Congrats on Your Purchase! Yes! Yes! The Product Key should already be activated since this was from a Corporate install. In other words, Your Activation Key is tied to HP and Will be identified with each subsequient install unless Microsoft has changed how that procedure and mechanism, works. If they have then boot up existing Drive and connect to Internet. System will be checked and verified. Activation will be Confirmed and done. Then proceed with new Drive and clean install. However, Booting the existing Drive is a good idea since this is new to determine everything functions correctly during 1st 30 days of operation. Options!
To reiterate, no reactivation required once 1st activation is confirmed. Just watch the install when when asked for a Product Key, bypass that screen. When You're online, Your Computer will be checked and automatically confirmed for activation. This way You can install Windows as many times as You like on that Computer and it will function. Just to reiterate, bypass the screen when asked for a Product key. Keep Us Posted on Your Progress! Hope that helps! Thanks for Asking!

Anyone else found you're screwed if you clone drive to revive older HP? I want to keep license, but HP has done something to block update/upgrading.
If I do fresh install I can run 8.1 (gross) or 10, with "please activate". If I clone, there is no way to upgrade, right? I am blocked by error messages in Windows update and Windows media creation tool due to 'third party programs'. So I'm stuck on 8 which is no bueno.

It seems like I have the same laptop. HP ENVY Notebook 17t-u000 CTO (ENERGY STAR) Sad story... My hinges on the laptop were bad and it wouldn't close right so I brought it into my local repair guy. After a few days, he told me I'd need to replace the entire back cover and it'd be a $600+ repair then asked me if I'd want to have him just scrap it for me!!!! Obviusly I said no and when I picked it back up the screen was broken. I think I want to tackle this repair myself and was hoping I could hire you to consultation with on ordering the right parts.

Thank you for answering. I ordered from amazon the dw15 cable. It will take about a month for it to arrive, because i live in Uruguay, but as soon as it gets here i will tell you if it works.
For what i’ve been searching in the web, it seems that the dw17 is the long version and the dw15 the short one. That could be because the laptop has room for 2 hdd’s and the socket for the second one is closer to the mb connection, so the cable must be shorter, however that doesn’t explain the difference in the number of pins, so…
I guess i can only wait until it arrives and try it.

@@BuildOrBuy maybe i should have ordered both, but if the dw15 does not work i always can take the old hdd out and use it’s cable.
A new dw17 would not be useful if i intend to use both disks, because in that case the ssd must be placed in the socket near to the mb connection and the dw17 cable is too long to fit there. So, i had to try the 15.

Nice to meet You! 1st the Bios must see the SSD before the O/S can see the SSD. Verify Your Connections. Something could be loose.
1.) For Windows 10 from Home to Pro, change the product key unless You want a clean install.
2.) If so, You'll need to access the Bios Boot menu to select Booting from USB Drive.
A.) Turn on or restart the computer.
B.) While display is blank, press F10 key to enter BIOS settings menu.
C.) In BIOS, go to Boot settings.
D.) Select the Storage tab, and then select Boot Options.
E.) Follow on-screen instructions to change Boot order.
      F.) Reboot PC.
G.) Change Boot Order during 1st Reboot of Windows install.
      Voila! Hope that helps!

Newest HP 17.3" FHD Laptop for Business and Student, 10th Gen Intel Quad-Core i5-10210U 12GB RAM 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD DVD Writer, Backlit Keyboard, Win 10 Pro | 32GB Tela USB Card
      amzn.to/2XKgAf8
Another Option would be to get the Laptop You want and connect an external Blu-ray Drive. Not ideal but an option!
ASUS Powerful Blu-ray Drive with 16x Writing Speed and USB 3.0 for Both Mac/PC Optical Drive BW-16D1X-U

      Hi Bee,
Welcome! Great Question! Any SSD should fit. Standard size. That's just the one We chose at the time. Great Laptop for Features and Price! What Brand and Model SSD are You contemplating? An SSD will definitely help!

My choice would be Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB Internal Solid State Drive - M.2 PCIe Gen4 ×4 NVMe 1.4, PS5 SSD, 3D TLC NAND, 2550 TBW, 1.8M MTBF, Heatsink, Rescue Services (ZP2000GM3A023) but I don’t think this one fits my laptop, so no idea which one is the best for gaming and work of the ones compatible, is there any one you recommend? Wish I cold have you change it for me.

      Hi@@BIA1227,
Would be happy to help if in Houston, Texas area! BTW: For Specifics, the Drive You mentioned is an M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. We need to determine which type of Drive Your Specific Laptop Configuration Supports. There are 3 or 4 ways to Verify.
First, look on the back for the HP Label to Identify Your exact product. If Your HP Laptop did not include an M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drive, there's a good chance that feature Connector and Bios suppory may not be enabled. Such was the situation for Us on this Video! Depends upon the Market HP was targeting. Give Us that Info. We'll look it up before trying the alternate routes of Inspection.

To bad that I am in Florida, Thank you for the reply Model number is HP ENVY - 17-u273cl it doesn’t look like it has a NVMe support, I think I need a SATA SSD from HP website my drive is “Hard drive
      1 TB 7200 rpm SATA”

We would if We could! Bummer! Ok, same Part here. HP ENVY - 17-u273cl Product Specifications
      support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05787844
Another way to Check and Verify? Look in Your Bios for a Setting about NVMe. Another way is to Interrogate Your Computer. That only works if a Drive is present on the Controller. In otherwords, interrogating Your Computer is helpful but in this situation not helpful. The only other way is a visual Inspection of the space looking for an M.2 Connector. And I only do that last when all other means are exhausted. When You are at that point, We need to have everything ready to go. Once IN then finished.
Accepting what HP indicates, Yes. To reiterate, NO M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD nor SATA M.2. Only a SATA SSD. With that acknowledgment, We can proceed to Source what will work for You.
A 2TB SATA SSD 2.5. Got it! We use SanDisk in Our SSD Recorder. Plus Pics to open Laptop Shell and Torx Screwdrivers. The Gasket may need to be replaced once removed. Verify that Part through HP Parts Picker site.

We could see that the SSD ribbon cable was not secure. It makes sense to test that the drive is being 'seen' before screwing things back together. The reason why you could not show on HDMI is because the driver was missing. You were offline so it could not install automatically and you could have saved the HDMI driver on a USB stick.
Your theory that initial failure of Windows full loading was because it needed a USB 3 port and not USB 2 does not hold up. More likely the absence of USB drivers had not allowed all of the ports on the USB 'tree' to do their jobs.
You did not point out that the Win 10 Pro you loaded would not be activated by the Win 10 Home product key and should have done as many watching the video would not be in your special circumstances of using an off line account. In order to obtain all drivers and updates you would have needed to go online but would have gotten the Not Activated watermark.

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Stephen Hall,
      Welcome!
      1. Correct. Thank You for pointing that out!
      2. HDMI - Incorrect. There is no output on a secondary Monitor (HDMI) until the O/S Loads. Once the O/S Loads there is a generic Driver that will activate output. There have been some Laptop models in the past where the primary Display could be changed within the Bios from Internal to External. Most Laptops no longer have that feature. And most Most Laptops default to the internal GPU rather than using the higher Performance GPU.
      3. Native Chipset support. Apparently that USB Port was using a different Chipset.
      4. This was about Upgrading the SSD.
      5. We have a Video about How to Create an Offline Account and why. No need to repeat.
      6. Going online, Windows acknowledges the default key, which is already activated. This was not about changing a Key. Although We did.
      Thank You for Your Comments!

    • @BuildOrBuy

Hi Ara, Depends upon whether or not You have an M.2 NVMe Connector present. HP made several iterations of that model for different markets. One way to know, check the Bios. There should be a setting for NVMe. If that is not present, in the Bios, neither is the M.2 NVMe connector. And there is no way to test unless the Connector has a Drive Attached.
You might be able to ascertain by the Model Code on the Back. We could not. The M.2 NVMe Connector was Listed in the PDF Manual but it was not present in our Laptop from Costco. The last resort is to open the Laptop and look.
All we could do was to swap the HDD for an SSD. Not as fast we would like but as fast as we could get! Hope that helps!

      Hi Technical_Gaming07,
Welcome! HP Envy 15 2014 - Is this what You have? HP ENVY 15-j001tx -

      www.cnet.com/products/hp-envy-15-2014/
      h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04091768
      - 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA HDD.
      1. Do You have an mSATA SSD? You best option for the mSATA SSD would be this:
LEVEN mSATA SSD 1TB 3D NAND TLC SATA III 6 Gb/s, mSATA (30x50.9mm) Internal Solid State Drive - Compatible with Desktop PC Laptop - (JMS600-1TB)
      amzn.to/3qlwMNJ
      2. For a SATA SSD - SAMSUNG 870 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-77E1T0B/AM)
      amzn.to/3xH3oE4
      To Clone, here's a SATA SSD Enclosure - Vantec USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD Storage Adapter (CB-STC31-2PB)
      amzn.to/3zPscfd
Options if available, SATA SSD or mSATA SSD. A SATA SSD can be housed in an external enclosure to facilitate Cloning the existing internal Drive. Whereas an mSATA SSD Enclosure would only work with an mSATA SSD. Thoughts to consider. Only way to be certain what's inside without opening and looking would be to verify Your model with HP Parts with Your Serial Number. Hope that helps!

Hi@@bb.cute.channel, Got it. Changing 1 thing, changes everything!
      1.) Install a new SSD.
2.) Your Original Drive is now a Backup copy!
3.) Download Windows Media Creation Tool. You'll need a USB Drive. 32 GBs or less.
      www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
4.) Install Windows from the USB Drive, Windows Media Creation Tool created.
Just like we demonstrated in the Video! Let me know if You need more help!

Removed my battery to see where my screws were and broke my machine. cmos checksum comes up and auto executes but to no avail. re-installed bios no go. should i go recovery manager with backup files? blue screen over and over with a select language and then recovery options. HP Pavilion 17t-ab000 CTO (ENERGY STAR). first laptop and they suck. i'm the build or pimp a desktop gaming machine kinda guy. plan to contact HP but just wanna get rid of this thing- hardly used the hunkajunk and this should not have happened. thing was powered down from OS and battery was out for maybe 5 - 15 mins. bizarre but i don't have anything important on this that i don't have on my other machines which i have backup images in many forms for.
still think its a cmos thing. tried all hp solutions, no restore points found etc. figured i'd have a better chance to sell this thing if it had a 1tb ssd in her. doing a recovery manager back up files thing now but its probably a waste of time. very little use, never any problems and always up to date using HP's smart driver update utility.

      Hi Eric Philo,
Nice to Meeet You! Thinking out loud... Bummer! You should be able to go into Bios. Check and verify Settings. This might be an AHCI SATA Setting, from OFF to ON. Save, then reboot. If You get a Blue Screen, it's a Driver. Battery only had to be out for 2 to 3 minutes. The Bios has been reset to a default setting. Try optimized settings. I don't know that Bios so anything I tell You will be generic.
      Options...
1.) Go into Bios and see if anything was changed or turned off. To reiterate, Try optimized settings.
2.) The Blue Screen - Take a Picture with Your SmartPhone. There's a Code on bottom left of Screen. We need to know what that says. This is a Driver. And it's Bios related.
3.) Can You get into Windows Safe Mode?
Until we figure out what was changed in Bios, it will not do any good to restore anything in Windows from a prior image.

@@BuildOrBuy OOPs ! already fixed with a destructive recovery, files backed up, not much to destroy. Glad I have no screws under the rubber feet bottom of laptop. have manuals and links for Phillips sizes ready. will pickup 1 tb nvme ssd soon. looks like i do m.2 B/M through pcie. spinner is 1 tb so hoping symmetry will make for easy clone. will follow your steps above.
?= my 4 thread Skylake 6300hq has only 16 xpress lanes so hope 8 will be fine for my 4gb 960m GPU. i guess ssd will use 4 and wanna leave my spinner in for slow backup storage but nvme may cut off some sata port/lanes? probably need mobo schematics or something to know for sure. of coarse hoping gpu 8 lanes, nvme 4 lanes and hopefully one sata 3.0 is open for 4 lanes. do i need to be concerned?
?= any recommendations on cloning(migration) software/procedures. or just do what ya did in the vid?
have 8 gb so-dimm(t=16) in shopping cart also and while recovering set up an articulating jury-rigged mount with a system that lifts the Ltop off the surface with 4 wrap around prongs and temps are better and also forced a naughty hot game launcher to run on FIGPU while game runs on discrete gpu(just discovered this may be unique to win 10) for even better temps. so maybe i keep this thing.

Check Your Bios for a setting. You're looking for NVMe. If You see that, then the Laptop will support it. If not, no. HP has neutered some Laptops and have not enabled that feature which is a bummer. Whereas, an ASUS will have that capability even if not factory installed. There is no way to Interrogate a Computer for a connector. Just like interrogating a computer for a PSU. Not possible. Hope that helps!
