Hi Andrew (and Cat), THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. I have two of these exact same laptops, and the problem has been the old HP curse of the "broken left hinge". I have never seen such a great and thorough breakdown of the J020dx... they both work wonderfully; the only problem is when you open them the part where the hinge is, it's broken so it starts to pull apart. And yet they still work perfectly. But now I can do all the wonderful cleaning you have done, to every part I can. That always adds life to a pc. Plus watching how you would not mess with the glue; I know exactly what I have to do to fix those parts. I am so grateful. Thank you for an excellent video tutorial done with patience and lots of love. I will let you know how they come out in a couple of weeks when I fix them. Maybe I'll post a tiny video to show you how they came out. Respect Andrew. And ps, they really are great for anything including gaming. I'm very glad I didn't get rid of them before seeing this video. Extremely helpful. Thanks..Gman

Nice upgrades :) Personally, with this laptop, there is the option of three drives, so the best option is 1x mSATA SSD (mSATA was accessible when the bottom case was removed), 1x programs SSD, and 1x data HDD (2TB seems the best - or at least 1TB, anyway). Go for 256GB mSATA if you only want one OS, or 512GB mSATA to dual boot, and have the OS'es on the one disk only. That means you can keep the fully working DVD drive - as some people (especially myself) still use DVDs and CDs, it is a shame that modern laptops no longer have DVD drives.

    • @DemeDemetre

@@FR4M3Sharma Unfortunately indeed! A lot of modern day laptops, and even modern desktops, do not have DVD drive built into them, so the ones that have the DVD drive as an option are more worth buying to those who still use physical media.
My next PC, I have to spend £130 on a case because it is one of the only ones to support DVD drive, if I didn't care about the DVD drive then my case could probably cost about £50 or £60.

    • @TheSpotify95
      @TheSpotify95 ปีที่แล้ว

Then, late-May 2019 My Dad fix it and had to reinstalling Windows 10 on My current laptop. But, It failed due to boot.efi is missing. Then, in July 2019 My Dad reinstalled Windows 10 for the second attempt and the hard drive crashed due to had 2 partitions to want to having dual-booted with both Windows 10 and Linux Mint. Then, My Dad had to swapped it with an older one (from My Packard Bell EasyNote LM82) an 320GB Hard Drive and then it works perfectly fine. IMO, those mSATA ports are a great addition. This means a better solution would have been:
512GB mSATA SSD for both OS'es (Windows & Linux)
1TB 2.5 SSD for programs and games (for both OS'es)
2TB 2.5 HDD for general data such as music, photos, videos, game recordings, etc
This then leaves 4th disk slot for CD-ROM, so that *CD-ROM does not need to be removed!*

Nice. I'm trying to do a mini project on my 10year old laptop too. But for a 10 year old laptop, I have to really watch how much I spend for repairs. Because even the lowest budget computer right now is probably better than my 4gb ram, intel 2 duo core laptop.
Although I already have a more up to date laptop and I'll most likely not ever use this old laptop often, since I'm learning how to fix hardware, I'm making sure to take this opportunity to tinker with it.
I found an old random 500GB hdd in a drawer in my living room. It's not mines. It has some disk errors, with some research I was able to troubleshoot and get it working again (the user folder indicates that it's my nephews haha). I swapped out my 300GB hdd that ran a bootlegged slow and out of date win7 (pc originally came with vista) with this new hdd and installed Unbuntu. Such a huge difference! Haha. Runs alot faster and smoother than the out of date bootlegged win7. BUT it's not ssd fast, so I want to upgrade this.
I still have to watch my repair/upgrade budget. Although I want to have moderate ssd space, it doesnt make sense to break my budget for it, especially since it's a laptop I'm not going to seriously use. Instead of a 500GB ssd for an affordable $50+ (cyber monday), I'm going to settle for 250gb for half the price (or even go cheaper for a 120gb ssd). Clone the hhd onto the ssd for faster booting and keep the hhd for storage. Hybrid action.
So far, physical parts I've bought for physical damage repair was a little under $50 ( LCD bezel, back cover). Theres also a major issue of the battery being dead and not able to charge. But that is just too damn costly for a new one ($80 to over $130). I will just have to source a used or try an alternative repair, which I'm excited to do. Meanwhile the laptop can just run while corded.
Another stupidly costly item that I want to upgrade is the RAM. Laptops currently has 4gb of ddr2, I want to bring that up to 8gb, it was a bit annoying as lag was noticible when I loaded a few apps and browsers (because i need to fill out my dual monitor space). Why does outdated RAM have to cost so much. At over $120 for a 2x4gb set, that pretty much almost breaks my budget. But for the sake of practice and satisfaction of reaping and improving something I'm going to do it!
Watching you take it apart, made me decide I'll have to give it a deep clean too, as it did pick up a lot of dust. I'm excited for this project, but I hope it goes well since ive never done anything like this before lol.

For a Core 2 Duo laptop you have to be careful. Core 2 Duo laptops are still OK, but getting on a bit, and as you say have DDR2 RAM instead of DDR3. Also most motherboards max out of 4GB, with some early ones maxing out at 2GB, and 4GB DDR2 memory modules are as expensive as hell. With current pricing, instead of trying to do 8GB DDR2 + SSD, you're probably better off getting a 1st - 4th gen Intel Core i series laptop with DDR3 support.

This was my first laptop and the build quality was atrocious. Back then i was a foolish newbie, and i literally just disposed the laptop downstairs of my house. Now, i have built many desktop pcs from used parts, and bought used thinkpads.
My only regret was that while i took out the harddisk and ram, i thought the cpu was soldered to the motherboard and didnt keep the removable i7-4700hq cpu. That cpu would have been a great upgrade for a thinkpad t440p...

One lesson I learnt when installing Windows and Ubuntu on separate drives: disable the other drive when installing each OS, otherwise the bootloader can end up on the wrong drive! Do you update the BIOS to the latest version when you restore these laptops?

Hi bro, when i do dual or multi OS i always remove the other HDD/SSD physically from the laptop, its safer. Also if the bios is outdated then I do update

    Thank you in advance 👍
