HP Envy Laptop 17 - bw0xxx - Replacing the Battery

  • This video shows the process for replacing the battery in an HP Envy Laptop 17 - bw0xxx model. Make sure that you confirm that any battery that you purchase is compatible with your specific HP model. This video specifically covers model #bw0xxx. Your HP Envy Laptop 17 model might be different.
    (A "T5 " star type screwdriver and a "P1" Phillips Head screwdriver are needed for this project. Though I used a P0 Phillips Head in the video, a "P1" seems to fit even better. Carefully test your screwdrivers for proper fit before doing this so that you don't strip the screws.)
    WARNING:
    To avoid personal injury and damage to the product, use extreme care not to puncture, twist, or crack the battery. An internal puncture or rupture to the battery has the potential to cause a short which may result in a thermal event.
    Caution:
    Improperly installing or replacing parts could damage your HP device or void your warranty. Before replacing any parts, check your warranty.

    Excellent tutorial. I had to replace my HP Envy 17M laptop battery, & the information you provided was critical for me to properly disassemble, remove the old battery and install & reassemble my laptop with the new battery. A word of CAUTION: IF YOU HAVE A FINGERPRINT READER (used for MFA security) you might have an issue with removing the rear panel on the laptop. I thought the screw was stripped, but instead, it was connected to the fingerprint reader. So I held my breath, & popped the rear panel off, & the fingerprint reader remained intact, & I had one less screw to worry about on reassembly. My old battery was bulging, & losing power with each day, so I'm grateful for your instructions. I took the old dead battery to BESTBUY, & they took it off my hands, to recycle it safely.

      Thanks again for your nice comment. I appreciate it. Thanks also for the tip on the finger print reader, I don't have that feature (or don't use it), so it wasn't an issue for me but maybe your comment will help someone else. Thanks for mentioning it.

    Thank you for an EXCELLANT tutorial. My wife has the same laptop and I couldn't take the 3 torque screws out because I didn't have the T5 size. I have a lot of different torque screws but not that size. I have NEVER even seen one that small. Thank you for identifying everything as you went along. Great tutorial.

      Thank you very much. I am really happy it helped you. I, too, had no familiarity with T5 screw drivers until I had the need to replace my HP laptop battery. Through some research of the installation manual I came across that reference and, the next thing I knew, I was on my way to Home Depot to buy a whole set of star type screw drivers. I may never need such a screw driver again but, if I do, ... I am now prepared for any contingency! (side note: I did find, later on, that a Phillips "P1" screw driver was a slightly better fit than the "P0" for removing the Phillips head screws. I used a "P0" in the video, but the manual mentioned that a P1 is a better fit and I tried that and found it to be true.)

    Excellent tutorials exactly for dummies like I am. Step by step at a speed slow brains manage to follow. Very well done, you made my day. I have an idea I would like to share re the bumpers. Use an electric hair driyer to take the bumpers off and putting them on again. The heat reactivates the glue.

    • @goodcourseproductions5546
      @goodcourseproductions5546  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your note. Good luck . Just be careful with the heat so that it doesn't damage your computer's electronics. Also, what you might find, as I did, is that when you peel off the bumper, the two sided tape will actually remain attached to your computer (not the bumper) and it will look like a clear seal over the screws. If I had realized it at the time, I might have made a slight puncture on the tape, over the screw, and then taken out the screws without the need to remove the tape. Then I could have just put the bumpers back on while tape was still in place and very sticky. ALSO ... "make sure" your computer model is listed on the battery compatibility charts when you buy the battery. If you don't get the precise battery for your model, you could get an error. Best of luck!

    I find that sometimes the screws on the back don't always want to come out easily. What happens is even once they are out they don't always stay on the screwdriver tip. I just keep a small refrigerator magnet near and use that to get them out. I find that it also keeps them all in one place so I still have them when I need them again. That is just so I don't have to turn it over and have the screws all fall somewhere I won't find them again. Yes they are small. Even worse however are the screws for the M.2 modules. They are smaller yet and sometimes a pain to put back in. I remember when I got a new motherboard with an NVME slot it was somewhat tricky to get it in. It kept falling on the motherboard. That is one more good reason to have a magnet near and also unplug the PC and hold the power button a few seconds to discharge the capacitors. I don't know if that really works so I am just careful when reaching in with the magnet so as not to short anything.

I searched the precise model number and bought an "ANTIEE" Brand sold by the "power VKZ" store. It is important that you check the compatibility chart on the Amazon description to make 100% sure you have a compatible battery. There are numerous batteries for the HP Envy 17. I took a chance with a non HP brand because the cost of the HP battery was about $112, whereas the Amazon alternative was $34.50. I took a chance, and it has been working flawlessly two years later. I am using it right now as I type this. Good luck.

      Thank you for your very kind comments. As far as testing it before the screws are in place, my guess is that the manufacturer would not recommend that, but I don't know for sure, so I hesitate to comment on something that might be outside their guideline. If you do try it, I would at least make sure that the case is completely snapped shut and sealed. Whether or not the screws are in place "on the outside case" might not matter but you don't want any of the electronics to slip or be exposed where you could accidentally cause a short or risk shocking yourself. Probably the best bet would be to secure it completely and don't take chances. Make sure you double check your specific model number "before" you purchase the battery to make sure it is compatible with your specific model. My model # in the video was "bw0xxx". Don't just go by "HP Envy Laptop 17", check your model #. Good luck.

    However as for applying the instructions to my cw0555ng, there are no scews unter the "bumpers".
    I'll try to take off the backplate after removing the 5 Torx screws, and I'll report if I got any further.

      Hmmm ... I 'm afraid I can't shed any light on your situation as my HP Laptop is a completely different model (mine is bw0xxx). Sorry about that. Since your laptop is "brand new", I guess my question is ... why aren't you contacting HP? I'm assuming you charged it for an hour or so first, correct? If it is truly "dead on arrival", there should be no reason that you should be trying to hunt down ways to remove the battery. It should work the second you open the box and, if not, close the box and coordinate a return. I would simply call HP, as they have very good customer service. See if they can explain to you how to proceed or coordinate a return.

      Matt , I got it on Amazon but it is not the "HP" Brand. It was hard to find the official HP version and the HP version was very expensive. I found a compatible one on Amazon that was only $34. I took a chance and bought it. It worked excellent. I have been using it flawlessly for a couple months. Search "LK03XL Laptop Battery for HP Envy" it is "ANTIEE" Brand sold by "power VKZ" store. It is $34.22. In the compatible laptop model section, make sure you see "bw0xx17".

      @@mattmcguire2624 Hi Matt ... Yes, in the video, at the battery close up, I show the actual laptop battery as I wanted to make sure that I gave the exact "HP" model in case people wanted to put the money out for it. If you notice at the end of the video, where I am screwing it in (10:47 mark), the battery that I actually put in is the "Antiee" Amazon replacement. It has the other part number on it (if you zoom in). It works well and is about 1/3 the price, but I wanted to make sure I gave everyone the 100% accurate HP number.

      In my case, I ordered a compatible replacement on Amazon. However, it is "critical" that you first check the compatibility chart on the Amazon description to make 100% sure that you have a compatible battery. There are numerous batteries for the HP Envy 17, that vary by the model number. So the one that I ordered for my computer might not be the one you need for yours. You must make sure that your HP model number is listed as compatible with the battery when you purchase it. Mine was as an "ANTIEE" Brand sold by the "power VKZ" store on Amazon. You can find actual "HP" batteries at the following website if you have your "exact" model number. www.laptopbatteryexpress.com/

    what to do if 1 of the screws is stripped?

      I'm afraid I did not run into that problem so I'm sorry to say that I can't really give you an easy answer. You might just contact HP customer service to see if there is a local repair shop in your area who might have the proper tools and expertise to get it out for you. If you keep trying with screwdrivers that aren't the right fit for your model, or you try to force it, you could make it worse.

      @@casst346 I'm glad you had success removing the stripped screw. As far as the thin piece of aluminum, I encountered the same issue. During the replacement, I decided to not purchase the "official" HP battery, and purchased a compatible alternative that was significantly less expensive. When I received it, I noticed that the thin aluminum piece wasn't there and, like you, wondered if it was a heat shield and if it mattered. I decided to take a chance, since it was an official compatible alternative, and just used it. I have been using it for over a year now, and have not had a problem. My computer and battery is still working well. (In the video, I showed the official HP battery as I did not want to lead anyone in a wrong direction and would let people make their own cost decision.)

      In my particular case, I ordered it from Amazon. I did not buy the actual HP battery. I purchased an alternate battery company that was significantly less expensive. (I took a chance and the one I purchased worked perfectly and still does.) YOU HAVE TO SEACH USING YOUR ACTUAL COMPUTER MODEL NUMBER. In my case, I searched "HP Envy 17 model #bw0xxx." I found an alternate battery that had my computer model listed as "compatible". Do not assume that your computer has the same battery that was pictured in my video. There are various models of HP Envy 17 computer. Search using your actual model number. Good luck.

      @goodcourseproductions5546  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did not use an HP battery but purchased one where my specific model number (#bw#0xxx) was clearly listed as compatible. I did not get a BIOS error and it is still working fine a year later. If you verified that the battery that you purchased was listed as compatible with your laptop model and still got an error, your question is probably best asked to HP's tech service from their website.

      Stay strong Jack ... don't give up. You can see from the comments that many people have successfully done it. I have faith that soon you will do it too. "If" you have the same HP model (#bw0xxx) make sure you first remove the screw that is inside the disc drive. That is the most critical step. After that, just follow the steps. It is not always easy, but it is not that hard. If you have a different model number, look for a TH-cam video specific to your model. Good luck.

      @@goodcourseproductions5546 Thanks. You have more confidence in my ability than I do lol. I got that screw but still was only able to get the one easy side. I've already chipped the cover once and would rather have to be plugged in than break the cover in pieces. In the HP video the guy takes out 3 screws and wala. I'm pretty sure I will have to pay someone because I used every tool I have and really worked on it. I have no idea how to get the rest of the cover to release.

    • @goodcourseproductions5546
      @goodcourseproductions5546  ปีที่แล้ว

      I certainly understand. I was worried about chipping or breaking my cover as well. I considered shipping it to HP or another professional repair shop as well but that worried me too. I didn't like the idea of losing access to my computer for God knows how long. So, I took a shot. After I removed all 12 screws, I used a guitar pick to gradually release the top. The guitar pick prevented chipping. There are little plastic tabs that snap the back on. After I released a few of them, the back suddenly released completely and I was home free. Perhaps I was lucky. I wish you the best. Maybe it's best to have a professional do it. As they say ... "it's better to be safe than sorry". Good luck
