Another way to be creative during the Covid 19 pandemic. I’m a 67yo in Australia, very safe compared to many parts of the world, i hope you are as well in Canada 🇨🇦 Cheers 🥂
I like the preview picture, basic necessities. Shelter, food storage, entertainment (of questionable quality?). But the composition makes your feet look bigger than that photo book. Loved the video and that you are motivated to show the van some love this summer.
Came here now from fototripper's recent video. Nice build. Just a friendly reminder not to transport firewood--buy it where you burn it. Help protect the forests you photograph and enjoy by not risking carrying pest insects, plants, or diseases into new locations. Firewood transport is a significant vector for pest dispersal, estimated to cause over $1 billion in damage per year, not to mention the ecological impacts. Spread the word, not the bugs!
The best inspiration you can get is from sail boat builders. I’m a cabinet maker and have been for 42 years. Design everything out of waterproof materials, use the vehicle’s geography as anchor points as to make all furniture removable (no need to screw anything in using mating clips). Get hardware online at LeeValley.com, those pickup truck long sliders are sturdy and will greatly simplify your design. Glue everything otherwise you’ll get continual squeaking. So many thing I’d want to tell you... Think well, do well. Good luck! Love your van by the way!😄
Next F4 roadtrip, no murder box but van and campers. First screw, I would be completely useless. I admire what you’re doing, not only the making but also the thinking too. Great job.

Nice work Adam . Self building your own camper . Is so much fun , but slightly frustrating at the same time. With the framework . Cover it. With 3mm to save weight . Also Roof rack is good . Think solar Panel to charge a leisure battery or two . From which you can charge camera batteries. I had 100 watts of solar charging 2 x 110ah batteries . Never short of power . Get the right controller. Charge the vehicle battery too .
Can't wait to see the finished result! I think poor old Thomas will be pea green with envy! Not to mention that green eyed monster Gavin! Great job so far Adam.
You've been holding out on us Adam! I remember several months ago you saying you were looking for help to customize your van as you didn't have the requisite skill set. I almost answered your but was swamped at the time, now I have the time but seems that you've got it handled. Looking very good to me. Cheers from south QB.
Ah I knew there was a benefit to being 5'6, more headroom. Looking good and the flip-up tables are so handy. You can't beat a tailor made build, but we have little compromises to make along the way. All part of the fun, take care Adam
I have an idea for the rear shelf. You'll need four of the Amazon folding shelf brackets. Take two of the folding brackets and attach their long ends back-to-back (with glue and short bolts) with their hinges at opposite ends, so that one folds up while the other folds down. Attach the bracket with the top hinge to your wooden frame and attach your table-top to the bottom-hinged bracket. Repeat for the other end of the table. With some careful alignment and a couple of extra catches for good measure, you'll have a surface that folds from the top hinge to make a table or from the bottom hinge to reveal the storage space. Might work :)
The ideas you come up with are great and I think getting a roof rack with a awning on the side would look good. Great job and can't wait to see the final result.
For the rear table at the end of the video, you could hinge it at the back so that it just rests on the side supporting brackets when in use and held in place by the hinges at the rear. If you want to get at the storage under neath just lift the table up. This will give you better access without ruining your back. Depends on how often you will need to get at that area I guess. Just a thought.
Yes. So cool. Looking forward to this build, Adam!!!! Great plan! Can't wait to see it come together! I'd offer help or such but I can't cross the border yet.. my shop is available to you though if you need anything specific or 3D printed or such. I've built a sprinter build for a client and want to offer help if needed! :) The lower rear part behind the lift table top can be a massive drawer to aid in getting to the items in storage. There should be full extension slides with extra extendability to go past the lift top. So many ways to tackle it. It sure is fun! Idiot spray...will need to get some. I'm with you on being more frightened of the people! Cheers, Adam!
Nice build so far, Adam! One thing I’m partial to is installing a 4-6” black pvc pipe filled with water mounted to a roof rack with fittings so I can take a warm to hot shower.
Hi Adam A suggestion on your build. In the back you say that there is a problem to get to your gear and you must kneel to reach. Couldn’t you just ad a couple of sliders to the compartment underneath the flip up board and have a horizontal plane slide out. Easier to reach your gear that way… perhaps. Keep up the good work.
while I like the Alu 8080 section in principle, it does suffer one negative in my mind. Constructing a box shaped frame & then adding panels to it, the Alu8080 uprights snag things if you are sliding things in & out. In the back of our van I made two long boxes (~6' running the length of the van), one was half the width of the van, the other was a quarter width, leaving just off centre walk way from the back to the front. These long boxes were open at the back of the van, so when you open the rear doors you can access what's inside. I built ours with windsurfing in mind & I wanted to slide sails, masts & booms down into the boxes. I constructed the boxes with 12mm marine ply with no frame, so there was nothing to snag the things I was sliding in & it maximises the space available for stowage. The front end of the boxes was 'closed off' with a panel, which resisted the boxes from 'lozenging'. We have full length cushions on the two boxes & a 'back' panel which forms a seat back on one side but can be dropped in place between the two boxes covering the walk way & providing a large flat expanse for a double bed. It's plenty strong enough for two adults to sleep on. I think the frame & panel design is not so space efficient.
Adam,Thomas and Gavin will have an outdoor cooking show next and this photography thing is getting to be more expensive than I thought. Now I got to go and buy a camper💁😩.
Wow Adam! For a minute there I thought I was watching an old episode of "This Old House". You gave Norm Abram a run for his money with your handy design and wood work on the fly. Looks like it shaping up to be a pretty nice build. Look forward to seeing the finished product.
I have a 95 delica myself. You might find it more beneficial at some point to take off the interior sides to give yourself more room, it is also darn near flat once everything is removed rather than having to waste room working round the weird shaped sides that you are covering with cupboards.
Thomas has money to burn and when I watched that build I thought jeeze complete money pit like his photography gear. Completely beyond the great unwashed's wage packets. Then you post this. Quick wipe down and off we go with some batton and a power driver. So affordable. So interesting. Great loved it Adam. Thank you.
Wow, a camper build! This is so cool Adam. I think your camper van is going to be amazing and well thought out. Looking forward to the next episode. Thumbs up!
Adam bear spray is a must have. Two people have already died in bear attacks this May in Alberta so not something to take lightly. Just saying be bear aware if you are out on the the trail.
I thought maybe a slide out table in the back but, it would still be the same for getting into the bottom once the table is out. To bad there isn't enough room for swivel bases for your front seats. Might have solved the seating height problem & given room for more storage under the sleeping area. I guess we have to settle for the VW to get a simular van here in the states. Looking forward to the finished product.
I think you would benefit from checking out Lee Valley (on line, they have a huge selection of tools and hardware as well as gardening bits) and they have a brick and mortar store on the southern tip of your island. I would also have you check out some boat supply shops (more for ideas - they seem to triple the prices of ordinary hardware). But boats need similar solutions to storage that you are looking for. Lee Valley will have pedestrian cabinet and chest hardware (Rocklers is also a good source, just not sure if they are in Canada). I'll offer of an idea (brain storming here), make that tailgate shelf a slide out and the door to hinge down for access. That way you have easy access if you don't really need the slide out shelf. You can also add some flip up braces (if needed) on the door to swing up and help support the slide out shelf. Now for pickups mainly, there are huge slide out trays (I think Nick Page has one in his pickup) so an affair that slid out the back might be worthy of consideration. I'm very much a woodworking snob, but your old "prototype" setup seemed to last and work just fine (as in sturdy enough for sure) - so hey. Plenty good enough! I think there is some merit to the idea of getting Thomas to come over and lend a hand and offer up his experience. You might even get some work done! :^)
😁👍 Mr. “Van Improvement” Adam Gibbs 🥳. Next time, by at your local hardware store instead of Amazon and help keeping the small businesses running. In comparison to the fortune we must spend on camera gear the price difference is peanuts. You know why I’m mentioning this and you know that I know that you know 🤪

Great video showing your ideas for the build. If I was doing it for a small van, I'd like to have draws that pull out so I've got access to everything stored.
I think this new build will be a major upgrade to your last one. The frames already look really nice and I like the Idea of pop up tables and the high carpet. Really makes the most out of it. One qustion: why don't you split the rear flap and make the right side flap down and only the left side flap up (where you need it)? This way you could have both - easy access and an additional table. Just an idea.

Damn. It's going to be way better than mine. I wish I had built a tall side storage unit like yours. Also love the pop up tables 👌
Thomas, your build was ridiculous. I couldn’t imagine having that level of attention to detail. Does it hurt your brain?
I'll bet yours is lighter.
