As much as I like the fact that they seemed a nice bunch of lads, including the warm gesture of the loan of his 14mm lens...I still think it was rude and completely disrespectful to suddenly turn up and begin setting up their tripods right next to Thomas.
Well done for carrying on filming when the other guys turned up, we know you normally can't do that. I'm now left wondering just how long it will be till you upgrade Yr van.
What an absolutely positive encounter through photography. I haven’t watched you in a while losing interest in photography coping with anxiety issues, but this episode inspired me to go out and shoot without stressing to much about getting a perfect picture.
I like how you interacted with the other photographers. It reminded me of how I prefer to venture out with other photographers rather than all by myself.
I imported a Mitsubishi Delica D5 in 2022 after seeing it over and over again in Japan and falling in love with it when I saw it the first time. I think you’d be very happy with it too. It’s my absolute dream car!
I have watched for many years, and I just have to say how proud I am of you being so comfortable around people now! Look at you! Talking...with people right next to you. Good on ya Thomas.
Get the feeling the courtesy Delica has made an impression on you. Lovely image with the 14mm too Thomas and fair play for filming in front of the other photographers as I know that is an area outside your comfort zone at times
As soon as the other photographers showed up I figured "Well that does it for Tom talking to camera". Nice job talking to camera with people around and and great images!
If you ever decide to give up photography you won't have any problem with finding a new avocation, Thomas. You are a natural used car salesman. Don't know if you could make the sales presentation to other people but you did a fine job of selling a "new" van to yourself. And the dealership did a great "puppy dog" sale on you. Happened to me, too. I took my ten year old Outback in for routine maintenance and oil change and they gave me an almost new Outback courtesy car to drive for a day or two. Wasn't long before I had a new upscale Outback with all the bells and whistles. Back to photography: that must be a very popular tree. I've seen it before in other publications. But, how many photogenic trees are in Yorkshire? You did a very credible job with it but your focus and excitement was on whether to buy a new van.... and feel that dagger in your back at the first of each month. And then having to go through all the work of completely outfitting another one so it is usable for your purposes. Might want to keep the one you have for another year or two or look for a model that is more nearly set up for the type of camping you do. Not a recommendation, just something to enter into your DMP. PS: I had to laugh when I saw that it was Gavin calling you. 🤣
I always find it funny that as photographers... our most expensive piece of equipment is the vehicle. I use a 2020 Outback XT. It is definitely not as good as a van for the things like sitting / working etc - but as a vehicle to get you places that you can easily put a sleeping pad down and get a good night's sleep in....It works for me (of course I can always bring a tent also). What I do like about those delicas is the big rear hatch door which can be a good amount of shelter. What I will say though.... is that having to convert vehicles from an "everyday car" to a camper is never ideal. You end up in a "jack of all trades - master of none" situation. I love the layout and customization you have on your own delica.... not sure if you are going to get it that good for "living" in the back with the new model (mainly because the second door is probably in the way).
It’s quite evident looking at that ‘bed’ that you’re going to have to fit out the interior like your other one. Then you’d have the best of both worlds.
I just saw an ad the other day for a 12-24mm lens deal, and I highly recommend the wider-than-16mm options if anyone hasn't tried it. The FOV is unreal, and the distortion can really be used for some great creative options. This 14mm image is a great example!
One of my favorite features from Nikon is the distortion correction they apply when shooting ultra wide. Some like the extreme distortion (I think of Marc Adamus immediately) but if you like something with perspective correction, definitely give the Z series a try.
You could also consider a Toyota Alphard / Vellfire. You can get a 4WD version, and with a change of wheels & tyres could be equally ok off road. I have one and like it very much.
We have the Delica D5. Converted to a camper. Pop top it’s awesome. Trying to source a bike rack for it now. Halfords won’t touch it as it’s imported. ( any ideas anyone ). Enjoy your travel and photography. Lovely to watch.
I had a 1995 L400 Delica and now have a D5, the new one is more refined, lovely to drive and full of goodies. It is just as thirsty as the L400, the best fuel economy I’ve had is around 30mpg but I live in a part of Devon where we have lots of hills, luckily it’s a petrol engine though, so cheaper to run and you don’t get a stinky paw every time you fill up! With all of the rear seats removed there will be enough room for a bed, but it’ll be tight, I’ve tried sleeping as you did, its not what you’d call comfortable! also tried sleeping on the floor with the rear sets folded up and the middle seats pushed forward, but could only just fit diagonally. I do however love my van (mpv) and just take a tent with me whenever I think I’ll need one!
Forgot to add, I know you're mates but I did wonder what your response to Gavin's crack about you and sharpness after weak lager would be. Classily done.
Brilliant images Tom! Now, about that vehicle, I love the way you're talking yourself into it. We've all done that. Now buy it! Just go for it and don't look back!
I’ve a Vauxhall combo life. I drop the seat behind the passenger seat, and to level it out I use 6mm ply. I have a trifold memory foam mattress. Makes for a good stealthy nights sleep. 👍
The D5 drivetrain is based off the Outlander soft roader where the L400 is based off the Pajero/Shogun. That’s why the D5 drives much nicer on road. When a trail get proper tough the L400 is much, much better, like the ones you did with the 4x4 club/green laning while ago.
another great video ... glad to see you included the big Poppy Pillow with the esential gear you moved to the courtesy van ... the first image, with the 14mm lens isn't too shabby either
Hi Thomas. Great video. I have owned a couple of the L400 Delicas and now own a D:5. I did eventually get tired of the on-road capabilities of the L400, the diesel version was just horrible to drive, slow and sluggish. Then I got a petrol V6 which went like train - thought it was miles better than the diesel, but still not much fun on the road, and terrible for long distance. The lack of cruise control is a big issue. The D:5 - as you say - drives more like a car. I have the 2.4 4WD petrol version and it gets about 30mpg (althought he display is on L/KM). I really like it, and actually prefer the look of it to the L400. The bed configuration isn't great though - the seats don't fold flat, I don't think even a memory foam mattress would help. I've been in touch with Edward at AMV about some campervan options or might make some changes myself. 🤘
I use the exact same setup with my Honda Freed minivan. It's ok for a couple of nights but definetely nothing more than that. Removing the rear seats makes all the difference. Thanks for sharing the adventure Thomas!
Thomas, your original videos of the fit out for your van came out right around the same time that I was looking for a van myself... so I took a lot of inspiration from what you did with your van (Although mine, being built mostly from plywood, looks a lot more amateur than what you achieved). When looking at vans I originally wanted the L400 also, but after weighing up the various factors (age, features, etc) I decided to go with the D:5 (2008) model instead... and must say that I do not regret that decision at all. Sure, there's a couple things the L400 had which the D:5 lacks, such as many having rotating captains seats as standard (really wish the D:5 had these) plus the true low range 4WD. In reality though I'm not going to use it for full on mud plugging and the D:5 has been easily able to get me everywhere that I have needed to go, and in much more comfort than the L400 would have. I've clocked up a good few kms in the D:5 and find it almost as nice to drive as a car on road (let's face it, no van will never handle as well as a sports car) while still being able to handle going off road on some of the 4WD tracks here in NZ without a problem. I have the back fitted out so that I can still keep the middle row of seats installed (for when I need to move people) but then quickly fold them out of the way to have a bed and bench etc - although am often tempted to rip out the seats and do a permanent camper setup. Thanks so much for your videos about the van (and also photography of course)... they are both inspirational and educational - and very much appreciated.
My 2 cents as I've been an RV'er or camper for over 25 years. I'd get the smallest one I could stand up in and had a bathroom. It makes sooooo much difference.
Cool that you got Gary in the video. I'm not legally blind, but let's say that the development of autonomous driving cars has still some way to go before I'll be driving a Delica (or any car). So not as surprised to see a blind photographer, but still great to have it confirmed that there are more of us. Like his work. Seriously? A Z and no 14-30 of your own???
I love Winskill. We ended up there towards the end of our trip after we left you back in September and the light coming across there can be stunning. You got a cracking shot with Pen-y-Ghent in the background there with the bright haze of the sun. Maybe not what you wanted, but a cracker none the less. Spot on. Be well, Tom.
The stealth photographer with a bright yellow backpack speaking in a video with other people around? Wow, that is some van! You're like a whole different TH with it around! ;-)
The positives of this Delica is it's actually no longer a semi-bonnet car which the engine located under the front seats, it's under the front bonnet, then you also get the new GS platform which actually more comfortable and more car-friendly feels than the old Delica. Third, just a fun fact, it was built in Gifu, where they also built Pajero and Military vehicles.
That would be amazing if you get the new van.. and yes the pods idea would be fab and the van would be multi usable especially when you and your wife start having kids! 🥰
Another fantastic video. Yes it's about a van, but also still very much about photography! Appreciate the effort here. It's also too funny because I was thinking at the beginning of this video that we haven' t seen much of the 'crew' together lately and then there was the call from Gavin! I enjoy all you guys. Thank you.
Very nice video! The D5 looks cool too. One factor that might explain some of the cornering difference is that your own van seems to have much more agressive tyres, which obviously helps off-road but can reduce grip and stability in on-road cornering.
Great vid, Tom! Oh man, I get all that beepin’ in my Mitsubishi Colt too. It takes ages to satisfy all its needs and make it stay quiet! That D5 looks great. The Colt I have is not made for a full grown man to sleep in. It’s like a half car, or half loaf of bread, ha ha! But the mileage is great! That tree must be pretty iconic since three more guys showed up just at the right time? it’s like they knew exactly where to go that evening? I have never experienced that situation at any location up here in the middle of Sweden. It’s always just me and nature wherever I go.
Brilliant again Tom. Fair plays for finding it in you to carry on vlogging with others around - just shows you can do it! As for that vehicle, it’s clear how much of an impression it made on you. Reminds me of how I felt moving from an Intel i9 MBP to an M1 Max - as brilliant as it was, there was no looking back!
Seeing the group of photographers reminds me of going around with friends from the photography society when I was in uni, and we'd always be swapping lenses, cameras, or film.
This is the best video I’ve watched on this channel. Watching you muck around with the van and interact with the other photographers was very enjoyable. Watch out if you put bigger and grippier tires on a van though. Might look better but you’d definitely lose some of that smooth ride on the highway.
Nice to see you trying out the D5, I owned both Delica models , the old one did have problem with power and turbo lag when starting. I love the D5 , I'm continuely finding more features on it. I've taken out the seats as I use it to travel around Australia doing carving on timber at festivals .doesn't let you down. Love your site and pictures hope to se more. Jim
I drive a Outlander PHEV - I have a James Baroud GrandRaid XXL roof tent fitted. I get over 40 mpg and camp all over, Like you I photograph a lot and love the outdoors. Living in Lancashire and spend a lot of time in Yorkshire the Lake District and North Wales. Worth looking into decent roof tents if you don't go for another delica.
Go ahead and get one for yourself ! I bought mine back in 2019 and still so in love with it . I'm looking after mine all by myself, parts are easy to get, basically it's a delica body based on outlander II . I'll be happy to share more about it with you 😊 btw this is not the newest delica mode 😊
Haha, I purchased my D5 on the back of your delica recommendation, I just like the squarer walls inside, feels roomier, also pinched you 20/20 tips, great video, hope you go D5 !
Get yourself a 3rd generation Toyota Hi-Lux. They may be old, but they’re absolutely bullet-proof & they’ll never let you down + they’re perfect for your off-road driving, camping & photography needs! If you get one, you’ll never get rid of it! 👍
Nice video, the new D5 looks very capable. I've always been curious as to why you don't just use an Aeropress for your morning coffee. Makes amazing coffee (if you buy good coffee), quick and easy, no mess and no wasteful packaging.
Enjoyed the video; I got one of my best ever images from an evening at Winskill Stones; the photo has pride of place on our lounge wall! It’s a great location for photography.
Great video! You should definitely consider the D5. It would draw far less attention than any other van. I am also intrigued by the pods you mentioned during the video. I would love to know more about them. Keep up the great work!
As usual another great video. Now as for the D5 they are a awesome bit of kit , I have had mine for almost 2 years and done 70,000 km and it being grate and way more capable than I expected, I owned and operated a business build touring 4w4 here in Australia and have always owned dedicated 4wds but wanted something different and I have absolutely no regrets in the D5 and I will build another one with a poptot in a couple of years. Anyone that bags the d5 usually have not driven or owned one and just write them off, just don't listen to them. Take care and thanks for the vids
thought of the tree, just before the sun came up, I think it could make a nice picture in black and white. maybe you should look at car with pop top. it can be nice to be able to stand up if the weather is bad outside.
You've got me thinking about what van/car to buy next that delica looks awesome 👌🏼 Despite the light not being what you wanted i think the shot came out very well.
I think I have only ever managed to have that tree at Winskill Stones to myself once and that was in pretty deep snow. There is always another photographer lurking somewhere near by, especially at sunset :D
Another excellent video. So happy to see you vlogging in front of others, I know that is a struggle for you. You always give the best composition advice and this was no exception. Keep your current van, this one is too small for you even if it drives like a Maserati
Thomas another nice vehicle ,that come I 4x4 options is a nissan elgrand , Toyota alphard , all good vehicles for what you use it for , Twin sunroof ,dual electric doors , electric curtains , bed set up, same as yours
"This happens a lot, I get excited, I see these things, and then it doesn't materialise" This has to be the motto of landscape photography 😀 Nice to see you in Yorkshire again. The change of scenery has been good for my viewing. I've been a bit oversaturated by Lake District videos recently. Pity the light didn't play as you hoped, but keep returning and you'll get a cracking image eventually. Regarding the D5, is it wider than your Delica? It looked beefier in the road shots and I'm just wondering whether you have any concerns about taking it on some of the twistier Lake District roads.
Hi Thomas, as an alternative for Mitsubishi you also mentioned a Volkswagen T5/T6. I highly recommend to do a deep research about the quality of the motors (150PS and 184PS). The motor of my T6 died at exactly 80.000km (about 3 years old), that´s nothing for a Diesel. And … as many told me too late … that´ s not a individual case. Best regards
I watched for the review of the Delica and happily stayed for a calm relaxing video on photography (which I know nothing about). Nice video mate, you have a new subscriber.
Look at you Thomas! Presenting in front of a crowd. Amazed you kept doing yr thing in front of the crowd of photographers. Lovely video!
Yeah, I know. They were such great guys, it was easy.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto That was lovely to see man, Great video again!
I couldn't talk to my camera if it were someone around me 😅
As much as I like the fact that they seemed a nice bunch of lads, including the warm gesture of the loan of his 14mm lens...I still think it was rude and completely disrespectful to suddenly turn up and begin setting up their tripods right next to Thomas.
It's refreshing to see a group of photographers who've just met sharing what they love and having a good time. Thanks, Thomas.
I imported a Mitsubishi Delica D5 in 2022 after seeing it over and over again in Japan and falling in love with it when I saw it the first time. I think you’d be very happy with it too. It’s my absolute dream car!

As a long time Mitsubishi fan, I say that van looks great!! Would love to see it permanently on the channel in future.
Get the feeling the courtesy Delica has made an impression on you. Lovely image with the 14mm too Thomas and fair play for filming in front of the other photographers as I know that is an area outside your comfort zone at times
The Beauty of Photography... When you have your Camera and Delica...
As soon as the other photographers showed up I figured "Well that does it for Tom talking to camera". Nice job talking to camera with people around and and great images!
"Feels like a car" is probably a strong candidate for your quote of this year.
I first came to this channel because Tom was converting his Delica. I stayed for the photographs.
Exactly what happened with me.
The amount of self-filming you do is remarkable. Even with whatever help you get.
I can't belive my eyes! Thomas in front of a group! Awesome vehicle Tom!
Both photographs are beautiful and meeting the other photographers was lovely.

I'm quite proud of myself it's the first time two English fellas had a chat and I understood some of it
Attachable screens to the sides and bottom of the tailgate might be useful.
That spot with that tree has to be one of my favs I’ve seen in the UK from afar. 📸😎
I’ve a Vauxhall combo life. I drop the seat behind the passenger seat, and to level it out I use 6mm ply. I have a trifold memory foam mattress. Makes for a good stealthy nights sleep. 👍
I love the sunset photo, but I absolutely have to acknowledge how hilarious and well made the seating scene was!
I love the Delica, I admit the older one you have is the better looker, but the new D5 looks like a big Audi A2. Stealthy and sleek.
Sadly that's the last simple and decent looking Delica model, from 2019 they have gone full Optimus Prime with their grill and headlights. Gastly
The D5 drivetrain is based off the Outlander soft roader where the L400 is based off the Pajero/Shogun. That’s why the D5 drives much nicer on road. When a trail get proper tough the L400 is much, much better, like the ones you did with the 4x4 club/green laning while ago.

I thought this was a Top Gear episode when Thomas was talking about the van. Shame he missed out on applying lots of speed and POWEEEEEEEEER.
I have a shot of my van, exactly next to the rocks where you stopped!!! I knew the location straight away! Stick with your van!!
Thomas, your original videos of the fit out for your van came out right around the same time that I was looking for a van myself... so I took a lot of inspiration from what you did with your van (Although mine, being built mostly from plywood, looks a lot more amateur than what you achieved).

I just rented a brand new Delica in Japan and loved it! It was easy to drive and there was more than enough power to get through the mountain roads.
Very nice video! The D5 looks cool too. One factor that might explain some of the cornering difference is that your own van seems to have much more agressive tyres, which obviously helps off-road but can reduce grip and stability in on-road cornering.

Love my D5. Extremely capable off roader.
I was just gifted a box of that coffee for my birthday, so I'm glad to hear your approval as I'm yet to try it.
Jim
I liked the first image best with the 14mm. I think you caught a better side of the tree with it. The 24mm was nice, but the 14mm spoke to me.
Agreed. 👍👍
Might be safer too? Talking of pods my Amdro boot jump is still going strong. Now done 114k in my Tourneo connect
I can only echo what a lot of others have said - especially in the filming with others around. I nearly fell over at that point!
I think the tyres look pretty "chunky" already. Nice wheels too. Probably my favourite bit of the vehicle actually
Currently planning on a D5 as well - great vehicle for multiple uses.
That tree image looks like the cover of an English novel. I love the yellow camera bag!!
Thats a good looking van, and yes, stealthy, classy even. I want one!!😀 The 'bird spotters' gathering moment was entertaining...
@9:45…”I really value stealth and privacy”….as he walks away in his YELLOW backpack…😅😅😂
As he publishes his video to the world. 😅
The second the phone starts ringing I think..."No way that's not Gavin Hardcastle" LOL!
I watch a lot of photography videos and get a bit tyred of the same old, but I keep coming back too yours. Great work and always entertaining.
Also stay away from any D5 older than 2010 as they have bearing problems in the transmission.
thought of the tree, just before the sun came up, I think it could make a nice picture in black and white. maybe you should look at car with pop top. it can be nice to be able to stand up if the weather is bad outside.
3:55 dont forget , you have massive tread tires on your truck. you can feel it on the road.
It's a nice looking van, good size, some of the transit style vans are just a little too big and the smaller vans just not enough.
You've got me thinking about what van/car to buy next that delica looks awesome 👌🏼
Despite the light not being what you wanted i think the shot came out very well.
Think on a nice sunset in summer you’re lucky to get Winskill on its own 👍🏻👍🏻
The van review was so good that for a moment there, I thought I was watching an episode from the old Top Gear
Thomas another nice vehicle ,that come I 4x4 options is a nissan elgrand , Toyota alphard , all good vehicles for what you use it for ,
Twin sunroof ,dual electric doors , electric curtains , bed set up, same as yours
"This happens a lot, I get excited, I see these things, and then it doesn't materialise"
This has to be the motto of landscape photography 😀
Nice to see you in Yorkshire again.
I'm also loving Yorkshire. Makes such a nice change from the lakes. Yeah, the D5 is wider, but not by much.
Everything in the UK looks so cool... stone everywhere :) thanks Tom, get the van!
Hey Tom. I think your VPN must have accidentally blocked my calls. I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't answer...
That was funny !
😂@fototripper Gavin, he luvs you really, probably didn't want to make you homesick by telling you he was in Yorkshire
@@doreenhart2732 That'll be it.
I think he owes you a consignment of Twirls for blanking the call 😅
@@kevinbrown945 I'll take pork scratchings instead.
Rocking a new Shimoda Action -X, I see ….. 😍
loved that seat mntage !
The sound effects are great
Gavin was probably calling to see if you'd seen his "punch" soundtrack CD.
i really like that car, and the area i have stayed a couple times but not shot that tree, i was told about it a few time.. ill have to go now haha..
I watched for the review of the Delica and happily stayed for a calm relaxing video on photography (which I know nothing about).
Nice video mate, you have a new subscriber.
