The propane tank in this video is too high and impedes the rear lights. The problem has since been resolved. The number plate has also been moved. Sorry mislabeled the flowers at the end of the video. They’re not Rudbeckia but Echinacea.
I was going to mention that you seem to have obscured your tail lights and license plate - the monty's would have fits over that! But your backup lights might need helper lights - say mounted on the bumper, so you can see what is behind you. Does the propane tank stick too far out past the fender of the van? Might catch passing cyclists, trees, hitchhikers etc. When I saw that blank canvas on the spare tire I figured that would be an excellent spot for your logo. Or use Gavin's; he needs the exposure and it would through others off the scent. :)
I was wondering about the license plate and the lights. Glad it worked out. I got a chuckle when you said you believe everything you read on the internet and when you mentioned the color of the grey being 18% grey, lol. Thank you for sharing your build with us and showing us your images of the Echinacea. Good to know you still have that D850.
I'd be pretty uncomfortable with the propane tank sticking out so far, way past the side mirror. But if you're going to keep it that way, please consider adding some reflective strips.
@@MarkNF1 Me to, looks really awkward and is probably not very good for driving through tight forest roads, you have to keep an eye on ti all the time.
I've had more than 20 years of owning truck and camper combinations, and experience in off road travel. One of the 'pains' I see in your conversion is the use of your propane tank when you want to fire up your stove to make a quick 'cuppa tea'. Unlatch both bumper carriers, swing them open, raise tailgate, retrieve stove and fuel line, uncover propane tank, connect supply line, water in the kettle, and begin. I think I might still be carrying a few of the small propane tanks to use during brief mid day breaks. Sure impressed with your sewing skills!
OH!!!! I KNOW THE PRICE!!! YOU WERE MORE WISE AND HAD YOURS POWDER COATED! I HAD TO TRY THREE TIMES TO REFINISH MINE. FINALLY EPOXY PAINT FROM BROWNELLS. IT TAKES TWO WEEKS TO CURE BUT REALLY TOUGH. GREAT WORK SO FAR!
You must have some relaxed road rules in BC. Where I live you can't obscure the number-plate, must have the lights fully visible from the rear and not exceed the normal width of the vehicle.
Awesome Van conversion! Glad to hear you pronouncing aluminium correctly. That propane cylinder stick out a bit. Wouldn’t be any good down one if the Yorkshire lanes as it would certainly get clipped by some farm vehicle!
Adam Gibbs - Renaissance Man. The more we get to know you the more interesting you are. So your amazing talent is not just limited to photography. More please!
Hope you read this as I plan to change my van as well There are so many different dimensions of those aluminum extrusions and they have different numbers for each style. Preferably the code for the lighter type. I can get these locally in town here, they come out of Edmonton. The company is Ackland Granger. One minor problem is that the extrusions come in 17 foot lengths. Thanks for the great video as usual.
I came across the same problem and ended up ordering the wrong stuff. I don’t have the code in front of me but yes make sure to go for the light version as I ordered the heavy stuff an am stuck with it. There is also metric and imperial. I just went with the one that was more readily available in my area
For your bed, I think you will need a support for the edge hanging in the air. With every use of the bed, you will put one-sided pressure on the connections and the slider. They will get loose over time, may even deform, but will likely develop play, until the bed doesn't work anymore.
Always good to have a project. I wondered about the tail lights and license plate. I thought the laws sure are different in Canada than here in the states.
Progress, not perfection is what they say. The van is coming along nicely and thanks for sharing the details around bolts and fasteners, its those details that are overlooked often. No doubt, you are a man of many talents. Cheers!
Adam with your exemplary sewing skills you'll make someone a good wife one day, lol. Loving the project, it certainly pays to think these things through thoroughly before diving in, great job so far! Cheers.
Hi Adam, I'm watching from rural Tottori prefecture in Japan, where I am currently looking for a Mitsubishi Delica 4x4 which I'm planning to convert for snowboarding, hiking, trail running, camping and photography trips. If possible, I'd love to more videos of your camper build! Cheers
About the fuel can. Make sure the pour spout fits into your fuel receptacle on your vehicle. Diesel uses a larger nozzle than gasoline. An inexpensive funnel might be needed.
I keep forgetting you are on Vancouver Island. Took the ferry to Victoria twice from Washington state when I visited pacific northwest, really nice island, superb cider and those nanaimo bars are wonderful and those Canadian ketchup chips.. we quite literally brought back a whole backseat full of them.
You might want to double check the propane tank placement, "a vehicle so loaded that any part of the load extends beyond the sides of the vehicle"., I only got lecture about a bicycle wheel extending about the same distance past the side of our van. The RCMP was in a good mood that day (even helped rehang the bike) and a van full of kids I am sure didn't hurt but he used two words, Hazard and Fine so please double check. Don't want them ruining your day just in case. Otherwise some great build ideas. Thanks
Youre doing much better than I. My Chateau D'Ford hasnt been touched. But then Ive been so busy Im not even sure what day it is. Like the tire cover! If it were me Id put the logo on but thats me.
Isn't the propane tank sticking out a bit much? I mean if someone (god forbid!) were to pass your car on the left at a very close distance, they might miss the car and only hit the propane tank. Is that even legal without any sign or warning label/reflective label?
Adam can sew! Anyway, nice job. I like the idea of you painting your logo on the tire cover, but maybe exclude the "Quiet Light" part. Just have the image of mountain and trees.
As Ian Moss comment 'Can the propane position possibly be legal? Your lights are also obscured. The boys in blue would have a field day in the uk' and here in Australia and most likely
Swing out bumper is cool! Not sure about that propane tank position, changes the width of the vehicle, looks like it would add risk to clipping it on things or being clipped by cars etc. I think the roof rack is probably the safest solution.
Love the way the build is going Adam. The bed solution is brilliant hoping to buy my van and start the conversion later this year in the UK. I may be contacting you about parts for that bed conversion it solves a lot of issues in one very clever design.
Just as others have said, that propane tank bothers me. It’ll be the first item to the collision, possibly followed by an explosion… Other than that it appears to be coming along well.
Well that was fun! Very crafty! 😁 If you think of all the money you will save on cushions (I'm pretty sure Thomas Heaton spent almost a grand on his cushions) then the bumper probably isn't too bad!
Supper great modification Adam. Just one question, what are you going to do about your left light in the back of the van. Your propane tank is hiding it quite a bit. Maybe install another light on the propane tank or next to the Jerry cans in order to be seen by others. Keep up the good work.
Hi Adam, the van is looking real bad ass mate. Those vans are cool but small so having the fuel and LPG on outside at the back is a brilliant and practical solution...And there is also the potential for you to beat the Tesla S1's 0_60 mph in 2.4 seconds acceleration 😮
The number plate will eventually go onto the fuel carrier and the propane tank, well I will probably have to be reduced in size to accommodate the lights.
They are not available in Canada or the states other than direct imports from Japan. In Canada the vehicle has to be 15yrs old or older, in the states 20yrs. The van that I have is a 1995 model.
"18% gray" (sure would confuse the hell out of non-photographers. lol) Very impressed with the buildout! Mad skills for sure. I don't know how you and Tom do it. I wouldn't have a clue where to begin (or end). 👏 Funny about the sewing, back in the late 80s I worked for MacGregor (the old sporting goods company) for about a month sewing the cuffs on sweatshirt sleeves. 😣Factory/piecework was NOT for me. lol Got a question, maybe it was the angle, but doesn't that propane tank stick out a bit far on the side of the vehicle? Looks like that would be clipped off pretty easily if someone got too close. Very nice video, and beautiful flowers. Of course, it was all about the light. 😊 Thanks Adam!
@@QuietLightPhoto It must be a good illusion! It really does look like it‘s sticking out quite a way. I‘d feel more comfortable with the water canister on that corner.

Totally agree. A mere bump on that propane tank could send you up in a ball of fire and the gas tank is only marginally better. It's hard to believe that the propane tank protruding beyond the body is even remotely legal -- nice knowing you.

another nice video Adam, did you have a hard time finding the extruded aluminum? I had to Google fuckwit....LOL...priceless :)
Nice job should work great for your adventures. Should add a fold down chair or table behind the spare tire.
What about a video with you and Gavin going camping together in your car ?
Use paraffin or an equivalent oil when cutting aluminium.... It helps prolong the life of your cutting tools :-)
If you build a yakuzzi in the car, Thomas Heaton probably builds a pool on the top of his Delica. Just saying...
