I have owned 6 delicas in the last 30 years. As per the smoke you may want to make sure the air filter is changed regularly and use a diesel fuel additive to clean the injectors.
I think his turbo's oil seals are off too!
@@johnobenetah4852 in the UK if people imported that engine in the Pajero/Shogun (as its known in the UK) theyre well known for issues with the fuel injection pump. me had to send a LOT off for rebuilds etc back in the day. teh UK spec ones in the earlier shoguns, and the later 2.8 shoguns didnt seem to suffeer from those problems. possibly related to fuel supplied in the different markets

I live in northern Chile, where the market of used cars from Japan, Usa and Korea is very popular, my father used to have a 1991 turbodiesel Super Exceed Delica with a working little fridge between the front seats (coolbox). Very reliable and cheap to run, tippy but very good in the chilean altiplano, where is very sought after by local people!

And, yes, the Delica is one of those things a lot fo younger couples have as overlanders in America and travel all over the world with them. They're tough, reliable and cheap to maintain. I've never seen an automatic one before... that's a big bummer!

Star Wagons have glass panels on the roof. That's what makes them a Star Wagon.
Starwagon is a very common standard van you could get in Australia & elsewhere around the world. Earlier versions of the 4x4 Delica were called L300
Also here they have a V6. Extremely capable and as I understand they are based on the Triton platform.
Hyundai had another L300 offspring: the H100. Even the Diesel engine is a carbon copy of the original Mitsubishi one. Be it not so good quality as the Mitsubishi motor. Front and rear design differs somewhat. And rear wheel drive only as far as I know. I once owned two, one early one without turbo, the second one had a turbo in order to comply with emission regulations.
These vans are popping up all over Los Angeles and Orange County. So cool.
Would a '94 starwagon be close to a 92 L300 exceed? I realize they're separate generations, but trying to ascertain the details. I'm looking at a 92 for a camper
@@Michelle-oz1jc they are quite different. The 1980s L300's are quite different to the modern Delica. Remember a Delica is a Mitsubishi Starwagon on Mitsubishi PAjero(not sure what they are called in other countries) Running gear. Just google mitsi pajero & mitsi starwagon & then look at pictures of delicas. But in relation to your question they arent really close. Strictly speaking the starwagon was not a 4wd & the L300 generally was, in Australia anyway.

There have been so many different japanese vans out here in Germany during the 80's and 90's that I always got confused what is a Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota or Nissan. They looked kind of like each other. Same style but smaller have been Suzuki, Daihatsu and the Subaru Libero.

Yeah but our German versions were mostly for basic transportation. In Japan they have such cool luxury features. Even European and American vans don´t have this to this day!
We have just been touring trough the EU in a Libero a month or two ago but unfortunately we only saw two others (one ambulance!). I was expecting more :(

The Transformers nerd in me loves that this looks like the vehicle that the original Ironhide and Ratchet were based on.
Used to own one of those. Had a lot of fun with it. Once had to go through a flooded street here in Manila because of an emergency, where the flood waters were about 3 feet high. Turned off the aircon and just drove through without a problem. Was worried but the Delica got me to my kid who got stranded due to the flooded streets.

Really cool van! There are a bunch of diesel shops here that should be able to give that engine more boost and an intercooler for it. Hopefully a shop watching can help him out.
You gotta love how the Japanese name things... the Mitsubishi Delica Exceed Star Wagon! Only from Japan... I also love the inclinometer, etc pod on the dash... the early 90’s were a fantastic time. I also love the 90’s auto transmission shifters in many Japanese vehicles... they’re almost comically huge.
This is actually one of my fav 4x4 vans from Japan. I've always liked the look of the front end of it since way back in the 90's when I used to live there. Never owned or driven one but its popularity in Japan definitely has proven its capabilities for the outdoors.
we call this MITSUBISHI DELICADO in 🇵🇭, from the Cebuano term "delikado" which is Spanish for delicate. the term evolved locally to mean risky or dangerous instead, more like 'Peligroso' in Spanish. this is due to substandard conversion from RHD to LHD by Filipino worksmen who imported these vans from Japan in the 90s and 2000s. still a very capable off roader being a cab forward config. it has superior visibility when tackling non-roads and dense jungles of our tropical country. This used to be our go-to vehicle when I used to work on a mining firm in the Mindanao Island. very special indeed. Sad to see Mitsubishi not anymore an innovative company it once was.

Driving an old school diesel takes a lot of patience. You cannot drive it like a gasoline engine. If you have a heavy foot it will definitely puff a smoke, diesel engines doesn't like to be floored every time. Try driving it with a light foot on the accelerator pedal. Keep the air filters and the throttle body clean all the time. Black smoke and slow acceleration is a good sign that your engine is starving air.
Remove that tune! The EGT has to be way to high dumping all that fuel into the exhaust. The state of Maine just recently cancelled the registration of all these vans calling them UTVs. I'm glad Colorado doesn't have this issue.
Neat vehicle. Interesting and funny owner. Mitsu is an underrated company, especially from the 90's. I had an '88 Raider (Montero). Loved that truck.
They made good cars back then. First gen montero turbo diesel is a nearly indestructible vehicle and I love it too..
Old company; they built the planes and ships for Imperial Japan.

Saw one yesterday 8/25 in Grand Junction, metallic blue green over silver and turbo badge on the back. If anybody would make an electric van like this or the Vanagon it would be a transportation revolution.
Very nice, I love it. However, you probably should have somebody try to figure out how to turn down that injector pump so you're not killing us with all the black smoke. It would run better as well

It's such a cool van (having one myself and I also have a LC76 30th anniversary which you guys don't have, jealous? :) BTW I'm from Hong Kong and absolutely LOVE your channels...... The Starwagon is the body style. There is also the Chamonix package of the Delica which is like a winter package with a dual battery stepup. The model after the Starwagon is the Space gear which has the 2.8ltr turbo diesel and 3 or 3.5ltr V6 has motor. Very cool to see JDM cars here.
We had a similar van in Australia, released as a dealer model, called the Mitsubishi Express. It was also built on the Pajero platform with separate chassis and 2.4l petrol engine. We bought it new as a bare delivery van and had it converted into a pop-top camper. Not the best fuel economy but an awesome little off-roader! There are also quite a few Delicas in Australia but they're private imports.
If I had that van, I would definitely have it professionally tuned. There's so much room for improvement, especially if you're just suffocating everybody behind you. An intercooler would probably make a world of difference.
Honestly he probably doesn't have a tune just some fuel injector issues 🤔 but definitely should be some power updated upgrades available by now.

I have been looking for a way to add intercooler to my delica... Any idea where to place it? I mean the engine is located underneath so it is difficult to add anything to the cramped space.
@@daddycook6531 any sort of radiator has to have access to fresh air. My first inclination would be to put it right in the front and duct it back to where the air needs to come from and go to. It would also be possible to have it on the bottom if you could have some sort of us scoop that forces fresh air to go up through it.
Lots of Delicas here in Victoria Canada. I've even seen one used as a wheelchair van. The instructions for the lift were in Japanese. All Delicas are right hand drive
Not in the Philippines! Lots here too, and I've only seen left side drives. Maybe the export dealers work exclusively from Japan, but left side drives are a real thing. And, ye gods, nowhere near that price, used!!!
Delicas are Left Hand Drive in Taiwan (CMC) and China (Soueast). In South Korea, it’s Hyundai Grace. North Korea also have L300 van from Mitsubishi from Europe.
I see these all the time here in Tokyo. I would love to import one back to the States when I head back.
They were made in Taiwan into the early 2000s in the 4WD model L300 with left hand drive. I have a 1998 here in Taiwan, that I tore out the back of and made into a camping van. It's got a sink, two burner stove and a 35L fridge, with enough room for my wife and three dogs to sleep in at night. What I love is that it gets us to places 95% of people here can't get to. It's really a great truck.

My Dad had a late eighties van. They called them L300. It had a column change manual transmission. 2.5 diesel. Non turbo. Rear wheel drive. I loved it. Two rear sliding door.
I've seen these in England, it's usually the generation after this and it is lifted so high easy 2-3 inches over this model ^
Also UKDM 4x2 L300 van with MPH cluster.
4d56 is still used today in AUVs of Mitsubishi and they had no black smoke but has enough power. Still has many parts atleast in my country.
This is a very cool van. A mini Mercedes 4x4!!! Haha. Certainly less than the $160K cad I paid for my new Thor Tranquility B built in a 2021 Mercedes Sprinter 4x4.
This guy is great! He is very real and feels bad about the coal this thing blows. Maybe there’s a modification out there to clean the emissions up without losing any power. His knowledge is very high and his examples about the phenomenal 0-60 times had me rolling,,,, very funny. Definitely a very articulate fella!!

We never got these 4WD Delica versions in Australia. But we got basic 2WD stripped out white van versions called express.

Worked at a van conversion company in mid 80's and the Toyota van had the same type configuration with the engine access under the seat. And it came with an ice maker/cooler in the console. We used to take all the interior out of the vans with the windows and top cut out for the raised roof and we would drive them to lunch for strange looks. The way the Toyota for was made, you could sit in the floor with the seats removed and still drive. Safety first!
I almost bought one in BC, Canada… told my mechanic and he said ‘good luck getting parts’
While this van is very cool… it is not worth it unless you are collecting or using and loving like him IMO
Ended up with a ‘05 Grand Cherokee WK limited V8 hemi, folded the rear seats and put memory foam in the back, got KO2s on it and getting a trailer soon as well.
QDII, power, and parts are my reason!
Powertrain parts you can bring them from central america, same engine/trans from diesel monteros and l200s. Body parts could be a bit tricky to find indeed
I have no problem getting parts for mine, lots of the same parts are used on other Mitsubishi, Dodge, and Hyundai vehicles.
Wishing Mitsubishi would still produce these brutes. We had 1 and it was all fun. We had it for more than 10 years. Rarely broke down. Mabuhay from the Philippines@!😊😊😊
TH-camr Dustin Klein for years had a Delica camper van, which was really cool. He sold it recently because he said the car struggled to go up a hills in the Oregon area. His was the camper version, which is even heavier.

Very cool rig. I had a 91 Montero and loved it. I let it go after 20 years because parts are hard to find and it was my only vehicle.
The gauges, folding seat features, and factory air locker in the rear are basically identical in my 97 Montero Sr
I had one of these in Uganda about 15 years ago. It was manual, two-tone green over silver and had skylights in the roof of the rear passenger section. It was a very reliable and practical vehicle that served us well for a good few years. We took it all over the place to national parks and stuff often with 7 people on board. I don't remember it being particularly slow, but it was a bit bouncy for sure. Sold it eventually for a lot less than $17K!

Japanese vans for this era are epic 👌🏻 I owned a 1989 Toyota Masterace which was Toyota’s equivalent to the Delica. My one was a 2.0i gas engine with a 5 speed manual and TEMS computer controlled suspension. Interior layout was the same as the Delica with fold flat seats, electric curtains, separate rear air con and a box in front of the gear lever which could be set to hot/cold/ice (complete with ice cube maker!). Mine had 6 glass roof panels (2 pop up,2 removable and 2 fixed) with blinds, a double din stereo with CD and cassette, and marker lights on the front corners which illuminate the direction of the turn signals. Stupidly sold mine to buy a Chevy G20 conversion van (Zimmer) 😥🏴
Sweet! We used to own one of these back in Asia. It was called Mitsubishi L300, it had a 2.5l gasoline engine, very slow but reliable and extremely popular. When he talks about sea saw feeling on the bumps he is not kidding! lol

It's not exactly a sexy looking van, but who cares when it's got 4x4 and low range.
I saw an all-white one in a supermarket parking lot in Dillsburg PA last November. It was pretty cool I had to stop and get a couple pics of it👍👍
Sad to say the Pajero/Montero/Shogun was already discontinued last March 2021.

I once passed a Delica on eastbound I70 just before Eisenhower tunnel. It was slow and smoked like a serious locomotive engine. They are probably fun off road though!
We have a lot of those down here in venezuela, it's called the mitsubishi panel, but comes with a 2 liter gasoline in-line four. Also comes in short wheel base like this one and mosly the long wheel base. However, i've seen extremely few 4wd panel vans. Awesome vehicle.
There's a Delica in my neighborhood. Always nice to see it. Ruggedized vans are awesome. Not rugged mini vans ( Pacifica, Sienna), mind you. Closest thing to it I could remember sold in the US recently was the MPV 4wd. Imagine a Subaru minivan Wilderness edition?
We worked on one in a shop I used to work at and part of the work was replacing the old engine, the owner had us put in a modern 2.5 turbo diesel that put out double what the old engine did

My parents had a 92 e150 conversion van kinda like this. It was the best vehicle to travel in!

Ours had rotating seats and the dealer had to weld them up for NZ. We had this shape but not 4wd, and we had the model earlier to it too. They were both strange shades of brown and the later one was two tone. Brown on other brown
I had the short wheelbase Pajero, these usually come with the 2.8 M40 motor, which was hugely reliable. I wish they would still make them.

I think it Mitsu had brought these to the US and marketed them properly they could have sold lots of them. They would have been the successor to the old VW van. Plus the 4wd and built on the Pajero/Montero frame, they were plenty rugged as snow vehicles.
Had one in the Philippines - Mitsubishi Delica Exceed (with glass roof) was hit by a church in Yollanda typhoon... got us out safety but was well damaged so i sold it on. Excellent vehicle !

In Canada we can import these from Japan when they are 15 years old. They are quite common and sell for about 11-14,000 CAD ($8500- $11000 USD). They are pretty cool, but quite narrow and fairly underpowered.

Wonderful car, went everywhere and it was difficult to break down.
’Stargazer' is one of the special editions that were available here in Japan back in the nineties. Even the current Delica has a special edition that typically comes out in the winter and is called the 'Chamonix'.
Always fancied one myself there are a lot in the UK, and you will see them all over Africa I saw dozens in the ferries going through Malta and then onwards, in fact one helped me when my African Twin clutch disintegrated he towed me for 70miles to the nearest bush mechanic who had several African Twins as parts bikes and it was the first clutch he had ever done. I look now and then but have way too many toys as it is, maybe one day, I should have bought one ten years ago when they were not so expensive.

As far as I know, all Mitsubishi Vans and SUVs have the seat foldback feature for sleeping... At least my 2014 Outlander did. I used it many times at rest stops during trips to and from my folks home. I don't know about the new models, but my Outlander also featured a third-row seating, and a hatch and lower gate opening combination to load cargo of any size, or could be used to just sit to enjoy the outdoors while shaded by the hatch acting as a canopy, and even as an umbrella on rainy days, or to comfortably sit on the lower gate to watch a fireworks display. It was such a perfect SUV, and such a joy to have. I never had any problems with it and always performed the maintenance on it right on time. On February 2020 At 140,000 miles I traded it for a brand-new 2021 KIA Seltos, which up to this day has proven to be a phenomenal vehicle, but I miss the Outlander with all the camping features. Some things are not meant to be traded. I still regret it up to this day.
Good video with cool people. I really thought of getting a newer Delica when stationed in Japan, got a Pajero instead. The Delicas were just too big for small Japanese streets if you live in the country or small cities.
In Macau, where my parents were missionaries, they call this type of van (4wd or 2wd) mien bao che (my transliteration) which means "loaf of bread car". So I guess the same as a Buhunka.
I had one when I lived in Okinawa. It was a great dive van!
Have a 92 Pajero with the same motor with the fueling cranked way up as well and still the four way flashers get a workout every time I hit a hill here in the PNW.
we got the rear wheel drive version here called the Mitsubishi L300, they are used mostly for delivery. it shares some similarities with the Hyundai H100 just the front is changed on that one.

Very popular as surfer vehicles on the East Coast of Canada. Great in the snow to get to the winter storm waves and room to change in and out of your wetsuit.
Always amazed that people don't talk about the Mazda Bongo in the same way, legitimately the greatest camper in the world! Similar set up to these vans, but larger, with more functions, very comfortable - I've got a 6V 2.5L petrol engine and it's a beast with a fair bit of power
They did have lift kits for those and a model called the Sport Pack which you nearly needed a step ladder to get in . 🤗
I really like the black color on this unit, Up here in Canada these have been available for a while. I have a 93 Super Exceed same engine and transmission with the crystal lite roof in two tone blue and can run on biodiesel, but no tire carrier sadly. The "starwagon" designation only means passenger van that's it no special trim or options. Mitsubishi did sell this van in North America up to 1991 in 2wd called the Mitsubishi Van, I know stellar name choice, gas only though.
Nice looking L300 Star Wagon next step up in power is L400 Space Gear with 2.8L inter cooled diesel. If you do not mind wait for parts or using parts conversion system they are an awesome van. Many options for both these vans and given transmission is Aisin can be found in Toyotas as well with minor differences like Toyota bigger converter vs Mitsubishi smaller Converter.
Great Delica! Also cool are the Toyota Hi-Ace and Town-Ace Vans (that also have 4x4 w/turbo diesels and can be set up for camping) and the JDM vehicle I really want is a Toyota Landcruiser Prado with the 3L Intercooled Turbo Diesel, or the rare 1st gen Isuzu Trooper II with the Big Horn Diesel pkg. So many really cool vehicles that we never got, but maybe should have.
I LOVE this van but having something with such little power in a state like Colorado would have me worried. Years ago I drove across the US in an old Eagle Summit wagon with about 30 more hp than this van and I-70 through Colorado was absolutely terrifying.
The original version of this was made on a short wheel base pajero chassis with the 1983 express L300 van by Mitsubishi Australia for a Telstra Australia service van contract. My uncle was a factory test driver. But I had one of these JDM Delica I loved the reverse tables in the back, mine was manual 5 speed.
