    This guy has the most soothing voice. You should read children stories and sing lullabies

    Review was spot on. Not for everyone but has its place.
    Recently had a chance to play this at my local gaming gathering. We had a not-so-great time with Rex previously but I decided to give it another chance. Fortunately I really enjoyed it this time round and believe the inexperience of the group (early days of gaming so took ages to play and was constantly looking up rules) was likely the main issue.
    I think the theme and the mechanisms are a fantastic fit and I love the asymmetric powers. I would recommend playing the advanced game as it adds a lot more flavour to the factions and still isn't ridiculously complex. However I would ignore the rules for advanced combat and double spice blow following the advice of a Dune veteran. It definitely is a game that's group dependant and will reward repeated plays, so probably isn't worth it if you don't have the means to get it to the table with a regular group of people who will appreciate it. Otherwise I think it's a very fair price for a solid production of an excellent design.
    If you like highly interactive epic games with lots of tension and scope for negotiation then definitely check this one out.

    i agree that it's a game that works best if it's a game you stick with consistently. My friends and I play many different games, but Dune is our main game that we've played regularly for years now, and it still holds up as our go-to game. Especially now w/ the expansions adding 6 new factions, tons of new abilities and game variants, it's loads of fun.

    personally, this is my favorite board game though I can 100% understand why a lot of people dont like this game, the rules arent very clear a lot of the time and advanced combat is confusing with the spice but the reason I love is how asymmetric the game is, the economy is the one of the most interesting economies ive seen in any board game and everytime we pick it up, it feels fresh, even with the same group after a year.

    God greated ”Dune” to train the faithfull...
    Lovely game with righ Group of people who like semi complex board games, to casual gamers... not so much. I personally like it a lot, but I don`t expect it to be most peoples ballpark and would not like to play it with ”wrong” kind of persons.

    To be honest, to become really good at the game, you have to learn how all the factions work. Even if you keep playing one faction over and over, you gotta know what abilities can be used against you, and what strategies the other players are likely to employ, so that you can prevent them (if necessary) from doing so.
    Although, if none of the players are at that level of play, and everyone forgets about other factions abilities and strategies, I suppose that also works. Or if one player is better than others, the others might ally against the good player to make the game more entertaining.

      We didn’t see it like that as we don’t have the time to explore any of those options. We’ll probably trade this one away as it looks like we won’t play it that often. I like the game but I it doesn’t fit our group dynamics.

    Playing this Saturday! We're going advanced rules and I am a bit anxious about the combat. Other than that I'm super excited. Plus I'm Muad'Dib! I'm going to be selling info left, right and centre.

      A few. We started with the advanced rules because the basic rules are too basic.

    This is one of those Holy Grail games that always seems out of my reach because of a hefty intimidation factor, like TI4, or 18XX offerings.

    • @BoardGameBollocks
      @BoardGameBollocks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s not as bad as those to get to the table as long as everyone knows their factions abilities before hand. Still a tough nut to crack though...

    Dune works perfectly as soon as all players involved know what to expect from playing it. The game is brilliant once players start using their abilities to deal with other players. Fremen players using their knowledge of the Storm to council other players for money. Artreidies advising when to or not to bid heavily on Treachery cards etc.

    • @BoardGameBollocks
      @BoardGameBollocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t agree with that. How can player know what to expect from playing it when every experience is different? Games are subjective after all and Dune is a bit of a mess.

    • @brence1984
      @brence1984 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoardGameBollocks let me put it differently: when you have 6 players around the table who know that the game is as much about free-wheeling diplomacy as it is about concrete rules written down it can be the perfect storm. Getting to that point and learning how to deal with all the different concepts and sometimes confusing rules systems at work however is the biggest detractor to the game.

    • @BoardGameBollocks
      @BoardGameBollocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That applies to every game. Not just exclusive to Dune. Dune is still a mess imo.
      If you like it and can be arsed to get to the point where you are an expert with all 8 factions then fair play to you.
      I simply don’t have the time or desire to go that far with an unbalanced mess.
      Happy new year 👍🏻

      @@BoardGameBollocks I agree that it is preferable. But given a pandemic, it being hard to get 4-6 players together, especially with busy lives, it may be better than nothing. Plus you real life games accelerate if everybody has played the game digitally.

      I believe we said that in the review. Only bummer is we don’t have time to explore all the factions and now they’ve released two more it’s definitely not going to hit the table as much as we’d hoped.
