    I am so lucky that I started looking into Dune Imperium just after they released uprising. Bought the game and my wife and I have played it twice. We’ve won 1 game each. It’s a fantastic game and we don’t have any games like it. Apart from the obvious stuff(theme, worker placement) the thing that made me look into it was the small amount of victory points needed to win. Each point feels really important and well earned. Most of my games require a score of above 50 to win so this is a nice change. Great video guys

    Gonna lead with this has no shade whatsoever towards the Dice Tower. In fact, they're among the few reviewers and Dune: Imperium crowd pointing out what needs to be said.
    20:08 This. This is why myself and all my D:I buddies got so ticked off the moment Direwolf announced this "stand-alone expansion."
    This is not a stand-alone expansion. It's clear from a 5-second glance at the announcement page that this game does not "expand" onto the base game - *it replaces it.* The components are the same with new pieces for balancing (or "lore" with the shield wall), the board makes changes to accommodate new pieces and more balancing, and they released a pack of new characters to fit the upcoming movie release (oh and for balancing). If they announced this along-side an upgrade pack for all the loyal fans, I'd have no complaints at all. Uprising could be the entry point for new players and the upgrade pack would be a show of good faith to everyone who already loves the original game.
    Let me clarify - if you've never gotten into Dune: Imperium before, now is the time to do so. This version is the only one you'll need unless you join the hardcore crowd in which case you'd truly only need the character mats. But if you got the original game with the expansions? Congrats, you bought into the test run. Time to buy the full release. Roy's right, people won't go back to the old one anymore.
    "Thanks for supporting us! We'll be back for a chunk out of your savings account in 3 years with the Ultimate Edition." - Direwolf, probably

      I don't think a upgrade pack would be worth doing there is so much content in the box a few less player tokens, less starter decks and no resource tokens would not make the price that much cheaper. I would had liked it tho if the starter deck art was different would owning both would be more novel.

    I’ll admit, I didn’t buy the original but wanted to. Expansions came out and made it more difficult. Bought Uprising hearing all the news and reading designer diaries on BGG. Bought the base game to have those leaders and cards… They got me.

    I would have appreciated clearer answers and opinions on whether you need this one if you have the original one. The idea that I got was that they wanted to say "no" but didn't want to hurt sales.
    You don't need to spend a big amount of money for what is, at best, a small upgrade to an amazing game.

I can ensure you they are not concerned with the sales, as evidenced by all the companies that won't give them review copies or make them wait. I want to get this but I just feel like it muddles my experience a bit. I know the expansions dont work as well, but the base game is “better”. Overall it just feels like a bit of a disappointment EVEN THOUGH I’m sure I will love the game.

      Roy said he wouldn't go back to using the original game. I assume he'd eventually bring in the expansions, but if he wouldn't even go back having not played the expansions w/uprising yet, I think that makes a pretty strong case.

Rise of IX expansion is not THAT compatible with it at all, Immortality is totally fine, alternating Research Station may actually be better for the game (otherwise there's too many troop generating areas - ESPECIALLY Uprising's research station can lead to both combat VP and Spice Must Flow VP in a single turn.

    Firstly, the MASSES have spoken… about their strong unhappiness with Dire Wolf.
    Secondly, to assume that Dire Wolf didn’t plan these releases is ________. Competent companies PLAN their projects, budgets, deadlines. *So this company planned & published the 1st edition, the 2 expansions, the deluxe upgrade, & the dreadnoughts upgrade… & then now published this 2nd edition (?!!) *. Dire Wolf really one up their loyal customers. (I also think how much time they spent to play test)
    Thirdly, even in this 2nd edition, there are alot of nooks & crannies in the rules & iconography that can be improved. Eg warrior icon is still the cube… (but in this 2nd edition, they decided to provide miniature & wooden Sandworm???)
    Lastly, thematics.. so of it doesnt make sense. Eg the Sandworm, given its such a gigantic creature is only worth strength 3?? But can give you double the combat rewards?? From where?

    I think the Dice Tower did a disservice to the viewers by not trying the expansions and then stating that the expansions would probably make it even better. I get the clear impression that, since the expansions were made for Dune Imperium, they will not work as well with Uprising. Testing that would be important since, in my opinion, it should detract from the score, especially because it would mislead buyers into buying suboptimal expansions.

    The Immorality expansion was reviewed here less than a year ago, and it hasn't even been released in my country yet. Despite this, Uprising is already hitting stores.
    Since it's the same game with improved mechanics, I don't see how Standard Imperium and Uprising can share the shelf. If I want to play the better Dune Imperium experience, why would I play the first one? It doesn't make any sense to me. Right now, I don't think I will buy the Immorality expansion because without Uprising, I am not going to have the best Dune Imperium experience possible.
    I think it's just a matter of time. Releasing a Dune Imperium 1.5 less than a year after an expansion and only three years after the first game looks like a bad move because it doesn't seem different enough.

    • @mythicdale8757
      @mythicdale8757 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dune Imperium is played In casinos as part of the World series of boardgames. Many other games are played there too. A game only really works there if it is super focused and elegant. Not saying Uprising lacks good design ethos or elegance, but more so that the base game is a lot more pure and easier to teach. Casino friendly feels right for games which have an elegant footprint. Not too many sideboards, easy to set up, moderate playtime to complexity ratio. Tight rules et al....
      Uprising's struggle to interpolate the base game cards/leaders into Uprising lends the game a certain inelegance. The rulebook's instructions for such a task are very loose and "up to you" sort of vibe which can lead to 100 people having 100 different versions of Uprising depending on how they add cards/use certain leaders. Not casino friendly.

    I get why so many people hate the idea of a second basegame which is not really a sequel. But I feel like they had no other choice. Dune: Imperium with both expansions already was somewhat cluttered. The Imperium deck was so bloated by the first expansion, that they had to implement an alternative deck for deck building. So a third expansion would either overkill the Imperium deck making it even harder to build a cohesive deck or introduce yet another deck. And dont even get me started on the overlay tiles for the basic board.
    With Uprising they have the chance to streamline the game again and they probably already have plans for expansions in order to implement them in a smoother way.
    Either way, one of the games will absolutely be obsolete (which is a shame) for every given group simply because they are basically the same game with minor differences.

    • @adamg4912
      @adamg4912 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not the fact they did this, it's *how* they did it. They literally just released 2 expansions last year before they did this rug pull.
      When Dominion finally released the 2d editions (8 years after the original game), they ALSO released these small affordable Update Packs for the fans who have been with them since the beginning. Gestures like that feel great. This doesn't.
      And consider the fact that Unmatched Adventures is fully compatible with everything you already own or that King of New York/King of Monster Island are SO different from the original that they really are an entirely new game.
      This is far too similar to the original, making it a Second Edition rather than a new game.

  • @a-c-m
    @a-c-m ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hmm. Sounds much more of a mixed bag to me than the review suggests:
    - The spies sound like a great addition
    - The set collecting with the combat cards sounds awful. Likely too much luck and not thematic at all
    - Adding the sand worms is great in principle. But double combat rewards ? Why ? No thematic justification for that and basically obliges everyone to use sandworms. Also, it brakes with the overall Dune theme as I don’t recollect that the various houses controlled sandworms
    - And the shield wall sounds like an unnecessary complication
    The biggest issue is why did they do it in such a convoluted way ? Many games have little flaws. Live with it, Dune in its initial form is still an awesome game and now they somehow created a mess.

    • @paulligatto8476
      @paulligatto8476 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get the impression the shield wall is a patch for a patch. Like, they HAD to put in the worms, because they are in the new movie. But they couldn't just give the worms to one character, so they give to everyone. But then the worms are OP, so they create the shield wall mechanic to balance them.

There is no reason not to treat it as an expansion that now give you 2 boards to choose from. Uprising does not have everything D:I + expansions have. So I think TI3 vs TI4 comparison is invalid. I'm glad they made it a stand-alone since the original required expansions to be great so I never got it. This one seems like the perfect edition which I already preordered and can't wait to dive into.
    Standalone expansions are sometimes the better option, especially for audience that doesn't already own the base game.

    Couldn't stop thinking about how you called it a rabbit. The tiny creature is a muad'dib, where Paul gets his Fremen name. It was also hilarious listening to y'all try to pronounce CHOAM.

    Why not address the obvious question? Not just "If you have original", but "what if you have original and all expansions?"

      Since it works with the expansions the answer would be the same, no?

      Though apparently not everything from the expansions works with it. Yeah, just skip it.

    This feels like Dune: Imperium 2nd edition to me more than a true expansion
