The Baron isn't angry with Jessica because she rejects her Harkonnen heritage and marries Leto. For one thing, she doesn't marry Leto, she is his bound concubine. For another, Jessica was raised by the Bene Gesserit, and neither the Baron, nor Jessica herself, know that she is the Baron's daughter. That is the general strategy of the Bene Gesserit, to birth daughters and keep their parentage a secret, so as to keep the Sisterhood as the only option for allegiance for the young women.

There are some very serious themes in the books (there are 6 books in total), including violence, torture, religion, power and tyranny, drugs, intrigue, murder, and more. So it very much depends very much on the 13 year old. It is probably not intended for children/young teenagers and some of the themes might not be interesting for them. For example, the worldbuilding in book 1 is very lengthy and might be too boring for some (not only young readers ^^).
However, there certainly are young readers who might really enjoy this and maybe read it again as adults and rediscover a lot of things which they didn't notice during their first read. It was like that for me.

It should be made clear that The Spice is not fuel for ships, but rather needed to allow the Guild Navigators to make their navigational calculations with enough prescient foresight to heed dangers of transit.
I must also say that the Spacing Guild is the most important player in The Imperium and this should be emphasized

Paul was never a white savior, even in dune, Paul was seen taking advantage of the fremen ALONG with his mother, it’s the most sophisticated critique of the white savior trope in genre fiction that somehow alludes some of its readers, dune messiah spells that out more openly but it’s right there in dune.

dune is a ‘white savior’ novel in that it highlights that phenomenon but from what i’ve come across herbert talked about highlighting the dangers of charismatic leaders without the specific racial trope (which was probably not aware of).

Great video, altough you did have some slight errors:
Jessica having a son instead of a daughter is unrelated to Harkonnen's attack on the Atreides. Her defiance has angered only the Bene Gesserit and Reverend Mother Gaius. The Harkonnen attack was orchestrated by the Emperor via Bene Gesserit guidance.
Also, the prophesized Fremen Messiah is called Mahdi and Lisan Al Gaib. Muad'Dib is a war name that Paul chose for himself inspired by the desert kangaroo mouse and the star constellation.

So far, I've read the first three, of which Children of Dune was actually my favourite. No doubt I'll enjoy God Emperor too. I don't buy the idea that Herbert was satirising or deconstructing the white saviour trope, given that we know what it looks like when he's satirising/deconstructing the chosen one trope; even in book one, when he's less interested in that and more interested in world-building, it still felt pretty clear to me that the narrative is painting eugenics as an aid to prophecy as a Bad Idea.
Really enjoying these videos, by the way.

Currently, i'm in the middle of the 4th book and with every chapter i am wondering if i should continue. It is WEIRD, but it does have some interesting themes (religion, power and dictatorship, among them) that gives you some interesting perspective about the real world and makes me continue.
Regarding representation, i am tierd of this chase for it, especially in recent years. You cannot have all human groups (social categories, sex, race etc) properly represented and done right in one single book, without ending with something like the witcher nexflix show. And i say this as a person that is NOT part of the privileged white male group.

I’m a huge Dune fan. I planned on starting book 5, now I’m not so sure. I had heard Brian Herbert finished the saga based on notes from Frank but didn’t realize that was bs. Frank Herbert’s writing feels so deep and intriguing to me but I don’t want to end on a cliffhanger. 🤔

I feel like baron Harkonnen might deserve a mention in terms of representation and a warning. Sure, Dune was written in different times, but as a modern reader, I take issue with what appears to be the only representative of a marginalized group in a book being a villain.
Thanks for the overview! I was a bit meh on the writing style of the first book, but knowing that book 4 finishes the arc in a satisfying way, I think I'll keep going

I read all the Brian Herbert sequels/prequels. They are EXTREMELY fun. I don't know what people are complaining about. it made me realize I should NEVER to listen to the pathetic whining of nerds who admit they've never read the thing they are complaining about!!!! Is proudly admitting you never read something a thing to brag about? Is ignorance something to brag about? LOL! These are the same people who say that any Star Trek media after the 1960s is not really Star Trek. It's just foolish. The expanded Dune universe of Brian Herbert is nowhere near as intellectual or spiritual as Frank's, but is still entertaining and good writing. I enjoyed those books- don't listen to haters who are so weak they go along with the accepted "truth" that has been fed to them in their extraordinary proud ignorance.

You gave a very bad spoiler. I mean Jessica's father. As far as I know, it was a big Bene Gesserit secret who her father was because Paul was supposed to be a girl and marry a man from that family. Neither Jessica nor her father knew they were related. Thus, the father could not object to his daughter's marriage to Leto. Spoiler alert, Jessica and Leto were not married. She was his concubine to make the position of wife available to a potential maiden of high family.

Great review! 2 notes about representation:
    - it is Bene Gesserit breading program that excluded all men to use spice, until perfect one is born. One could argue that they could have done it the other way around through their DNA matchings - to exclude women until perfect one that can suppress the limits of all the females that ever lived is born
As for the fremen - they only know that it woll be foreigner, with bene geserit mother, and that he will "know their ways". I can't recall everyone who Frank mentiones when they are "tripping" and seeing/feeling theit ancestors, there are some ancient Greeks, but I believe some africans as well (Hanibal maybe, I read it like 25 years ago), correct me if I am wrong, so Paul is not "pure white"

  • @BRONCOBOYdm1
    @BRONCOBOYdm1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There is some misinformation here.
The fremen prophecy doesn't name the messiah Mua'dib. It names them Lisan Al Gaib. Mua'dib is Pauls chosen Fremen name.
The baron being jessicas father is a major spoiler and also isn't the reason for the Atreides Harkkonen feud. Those houses have hated each other for generations. The Baron and Jessica don't even know they're related until later in the book.
And Leto and Jessica were never married. Although they were in love, she was his concubine. He remained unmarried to keep hopes for marital alliances alive within the other great houses.

the biggest fan fiction scam that will make a lot of people hate me is marvel. the original fantastic four run is the only canon for those characters, and that is why any new stories almost always connect back to the ideas made in those comics. Fantastic four pretty much made the marvel universe the way it is today in my opinion, so i think i am right in saying that all marvel universe type things are an extension of that original run of F4 comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Here is the one problem with the story of Dune. Spice is so valuable that there is no way you would only have one house guarding its production especially when you have an active insurgency on the planet. Every and all expense would be paid to exterminate the fremen. Absolute control of the entire plane would be the most important priority for the entire galaxy.

I made it to God Empereror in high school or early college. I hated it so much I quit half way through.
Gast forward 20 years, read the first three House books by Brian (which are fine for some background but not Dune. But he did put more edfkrt than Christopher Tolkein but I digress) so started over.
Had enough momentum to plow through God Emperor and finish the series.
Then things just got wreird. Dune was brilliant in that is got rid of technology so you don't end up reading an instruction manual or dated hard science like Foundation. But as the scope gets bigger, Herbert's reach was greater than his grasp.
If you want an abbreviated version of the later books, just read Fall of Hyperion as it 90% the same story.l which I found really irritating.
I would recommend many of his other works.
Jessica did not become the Duke's concubine for love, it was duty. She was supposed to have a daughter but chose to have a son for love.
I would also say Paul is a white savior at the start, but that is quickly subverted with the rise of the Tyrant. And the reason the Fremen myth matches the Bebe Gesserit one is because the Sisterhood planted it there centuries ago.

It’s worth noting that Dune history diverges depending on if you stick with Frank Herbert’s classics or delve into Brian Herbert’s cash grab dreck fan fiction.
In Frank Herbert’s Butlerian Jihad, it was the imperium-wide uprising against the men who controlled Thinking Machines, and through those machines the people. So it was a two-tiered revolt. Against AI and against the men who wielded it-AI made folks weak and reliant.
Brian Herbert goes the Battlestar Galactica, Westworld, Skynet way, which although fun, is much less subtle and not as interesting.
