    How Farms Work is a TH-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. Our videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and GMO crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us.
    How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
    Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!

      Ryan, nice video's. Looks like the baler does great job, can't say the same for thr rake you were using. It left lousy windrows that were so wide tractor tires running over hay. Also a lot left on the field, baler thumbs up, rake...thumbs down. Keep up the good work on the videos.

    Back in the day...we use to WALK along side the HAY WAGON on use our PITCH FORKs topnotch the hay into the hay wagon. Then we would ride to the barn where we pitch the hay into the LOFT or put it outside or in a pasture as a HAY STACK. You do not see HAY STACKS anymore as farming is not steering wheel holders that sit on their duffers bottoms. LOL I'm a differ too now.

    Have to admit, I never even thought about Krone as an option until first seeing Wesley and now you, using them. Kinda growing on me, as far as looks and ease of operation. The Krone looks to make clean and very tight bales, compared to Deere, too. When storing this would mean more feed stored in same or less amount of space. Great video!

    Hey Ryan thank you for sharing this video. Back in the late 50s my dad had an old Allis- Chalmers Roto-Baler . Considering the small round bales at that time , that was a lot of stopping and starting. Everything now is a one or two man operation.

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's some interesting videos of the Roto-baler... good idea (sorta) but ahead of it's time and not too good of an implementation. The bales were very soft, too small, and the starting and stopping killed it, plus picking them up and storing them was a pain I bet.
      Later Rotobalers did offer a "continuous" baling feature that basically added some aprons on the front of the baler to pick the hay up and over and dump it back onto the windrow so one could continue to drive forward while the bale tied off and ejected... then the "double windrow" would continue feeding into the chamber once the bale ejected until it was full size and went to tie off, and the cycle would repeat with the apron taking the hay coming from the pickup and dumping back on top of the windrow in front... Kinda weird but actually Krone has a continuous baling concept that's not unlike it, in a way... it stops the incoming hay between some platform feeder belts long enough for the round bale to netwrap and ejected, before releasing the incoming hay to the chamber to begin forming the next bale...
      The Rotobaler vids here... th-cam.com/video/sBc11EeS9l4/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/O1a9mwi2nUQ/w-d-xo.html
      And the continuous Rotobaler here... th-cam.com/video/6eCz47L3w3E/w-d-xo.html

    I have a Krone tedder, and a Krone cutter, and I absolutely love them both. My dealer didn't have a baler in stock last time I was in the market, or I would've probably snagged one of those too. A Krone rotary rake is probably my next purchase. If you could get your dealer to let you video a demo of that, that'd be awesome. You should also join the group "Haymasters" on Facebook. We'd love to see y'all there.

    I really appreciate your videos and the education they provide. But it's hard to tell when the video is in slow-motion or sped up. Having seen this baler only on your video, it is difficult to see what is real time or otherwise. Is there a way to include such a notation on the screen?

  • @MrSea2river
    @MrSea2river 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the max speed at which you can bale? Is the speed dependent on the thickness of the grain? What indication do you get about the fullness of the baler? Do you get a reading about how much netting is available? What info does the farmer get? How does it compete with Deere and others? Cost comparison?

    • @MrSea2river
      @MrSea2river 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Just did. That takes care of fullness of bailer. Max speed? How does it compare to others?

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on a lot of variables... size of the windrow, hilly or flat land, size and horsepower of the tractor, type of crop being baled, whether or not the chopping knives are engaged and how many are engaged, how hard the operator wants to push his tractor and baler, etc.
      Assuming all those variables are the same, throughput is probably pretty much the same between brands. The only thing that might affect that is the robustness and capability of the pickup and crop cutter to feed the chamber, and the tying cycle (netwrap cycle) speed, and possibly the door open to close cycle time.
      Later! OL J R :)

    Previously I have watched you bale rounds with 2 different J D balers and on other channels I have seen several different Red brand round balers running and now, finally, I have seen the Mighty Krone round baler in action. To me, All round balers seem to have one common thread of inefficiency wasting time. I have never observed a Square baler, be it Big Squares or idiot blocks, that did not eject the bale on the run nor a Round baler that Does drop the bale without having to stop forward motion. Why is this? Also, if the "belt" system spun in the opposite direction, wouldn't the bale's reversed rotation, eliminate the tendency for the bale to roll backwards down inclines of the land? sdh in CT

Krones are big in Europe and they make some fantastic equipment, love to see them starting to get a foot hold in the US. Sure is a long way from the Farmall Cub I learned to drive on. JD balers are the worst we have a 550 JD baler it is terrible. it leaves bits, it blocks up and takes ages to tie. i worked at another farm with a vicon baler and it was so much better. never had to get out the cab. with jd i was usually have to get out to do something at least every 4 bales made. from what i have seen with krone equipment they are one of few companies that still make a machine to be reliable and function well rather than what other companies do by making it cheap and making it to function but when it breaks down more money for dealer

    Nice... looked like it did a great job. Watched your vid here and Travis's as well, and it's really interesting yall's take on it.
    Not been a big fan of the 4 foot bales, but if you can put as much weight of hay into the bale as a five foot wide bale, then there's definitely advantages to the smaller package (denser).
    How did you feel it did with handling of the hay?? Did the bars beat it up more than belt balers do?? I don't know if yall had any mostly alfalfa stands or if they were all mixed grass/alfalfa stands, but I've heard the old NH chain/bar balers used to crush up and strip a lot of leaves and beat up grass hay pretty badly, which is why farmers moved away from them. Be interesting to hear your take on that issue...

    Id say if you got more used to it you could push on a good bit faster

    It is a belt and slat system not a chain and slat. There is a very heavy belt the slats are bolted to.

      Should last longer than the chains-n-slats... but I shudder to think how much that belt is to replace and install it in the baler.
