    With the current setup you had at 5:43 we'd usually make more cuts along the piece you want to chisel out, and then chisel it out like you tried. Thin standalone strips are a lot easier and more cleaner to chisel out than a big solid block like you had. Seemed like you kind of had the idea when you tried it with the jigsaw, but you should've done it from a clean side so the jigsaw isn't unstable and jumping around.

      @@SamJoJOW fun fact, although this thread is half a year old, the guillotine was originally invented in around 1296 in Yorkshire England, under the name of a halifax giblet! The method of execution was then popularized in the french revolution hence the common thought that that's where the device originated from.

    Should have gotten a router to run that channel for the blade. But you probably already know that, Jake.

  • @pwnsensei
    @pwnsensei 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I never learned to saw that straight by hand, nice job. For the channel you tried to chisel out, you could use a plunge router on a jig and route away in light passes of 2mm depth each pass. But drilling out the bulk and then chiseling works great too!

    Hey my dudes, mechanical engineering student here. I’m not sure if you guys will see this but I figured I could use some rough physics to help you guys out if you haven’t finished the blade yet. Now I was just guessing on a bunch of my calculations based on what I saw in the videos so I could be off by a margin. A traditional guillotine blade weighs about 80kg (about 175 lbs) and was dropped from 4.3 meters (about 14 feet) which generates about 3371 joules of energy. Since your design is taller, you don’t quite need to go that heavy to match the originals. With the heights you mentioned, the blade will only need to weigh about 47kg (about 103 lbs). If you use 3/4” steel with rough dimensions gleaned from the video, that would weigh 14kg (about 30 lbs) by itself. You would only need to add about 33kg (around 70 lbs) of additional weight. In all, the blade will need to weigh about 100 lbs to be effective. I hope this helps and if you need any more advice I’d be happy to help.

    @jakei8322 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Jake, just a tip if you ever need to cut a channel like that again. Take a skilsaw and run multiple cuts down the length of the channel to hog out as much wood as possible and then the left over strips can just be snapped out with a pry bar then clean up with a nice sharp chisel. this guarantees an even depth of cut along the entire peice and a lot less "Sentence enhancers" lol. I only say this because the only way for that guillotine to run properly is a relatively tight tolerance to maintain a square blade, so if it has too much slop in even one spot then one side can go further than the other and stop mid way and get wedged, then you have a really dangerous situation because the razor sharp blade could be immovable from 10 feet up. Also dont bother getting the blade machined, get some 3/8 1045 steel and using an angle grinder put an apple seed edge on it as well as a heat treat. This edge type is the most self supporting and will last the longest to an impact 1045 is also a great impact steel. P.S. trust me im a blacksmith. P.S.S. make sure to apply beeswax to the channel for lubrication.

    Just an idea to add to the book:
    Maybe you could include an online accessible ambient soundtrack for all the different mind games, to increase the mental immersion and stuff. I think this would be really interesting, as well as useful, like if someone is trying to play, but there's also a ton of random noise in the background that distracts the mind. If they put on headphones and listened to an integrated soundtrack, it would improve immersion and block out annoying background noises.
    Good luck with the proofreading!
