John did an amazing job with the first call. It was direct, stern but also really helped tie his behavior back to his childhood and gives him an avenue to stop the abusive behavior.

My ex bf used to yell at me and sometimes infront his and my kids and would break up with me every 2 months if he got mad over anything and he criticized me and my kids all the time. I lived on eggshells and I had a hard time accepting this was abuse even though my therapist told me multiple times it was.

When I was about 30 married with two young children and I would respond often with a yell. I was in therapy and the counselor worked out a plan that if my spouse was present when I started to yell he would put his hand on the back of my hand and I would remember and change the volume. My daughter verified to me that it worked by saying when she grew up I would start to yell but then I'd stop. Of course our children didn't know we were working this out. But I'm grateful Mr Dorkin.

The first call is great and I've struggled same as the caller. I'm still working with my therapist on this but I've made great improvements. Dr Deloney hits it on the head with "your body revs up to make you feel big because it never wants to feel small and powerless again". That's the hard part to overcome. Everything inside my body and brain says DANGER and drives me to react so I'm not in a position that feels like I'm in danger. It takes a lot of effort and work to overcome that. Kerp trying. I know I've made huge improvements.

I still miss living in New York at nine years old. I have wonderful memories from that time. I’m not foolish and know it’s not reality anymore but it’s comforting to think of my life back then. I actually went back for school and loved being there but I knew it was temporary.

Sometimes I think a war is exactly what Americans need on their own land bc all we do is waste our time on stupid things, cheating, drinking, etc with our free time. Most of us have shelter, kids, spouses, family, FOOD TO EAT and an ENDLESS amount of choices. Basically...grow up. Look OUTSIDE yourself and love others. Don't stay in contact with jerks though. Let them all go live together on Jerk Island.

  • @AshleyLebedev

To this third caller, I have a chronic illness. It’s awful. But listen: Stop being LESS. Nothing that happened Health wise is your FAULT. It doesn’t make you less, you just think it does because of how it affects your body & life & how it’s existence affected & ruined sense of self. I have had men act like this because my being sick wasn’t “attractive”
You need to sit down & TELL your partner your real feelings, without fear on if he’ll love you less when you say things he does aren’t ok and ARE deal breakers.
Just cuz you’re sick doesn’t mean you’re not lovable and hard to date. I used to let exes get away with WAY too much because I thought I was by default hard to love, and because of sickness hard to date & the more insecure you become the less they will respect you.
    Empower your life again

My last boyfriend left me after 2 years living in the same apartment together because I quote "I can't imagine having children with someone who suffers from chronic migraines because then I can't focus on work (home office) since you'll be out and I need to take then care of the children myself." It really hurt because it's like a disability and I wouldn't wish migraines even on my worst enemy. It's nothing I can change. I'm glad he communicated it though and I asked him to move out the next day.
