My husband grew up in the south and calls is goulash. I grew up in the northwest and call it hamburger macaroni. When I moved to the northeast I was excited to try everyone's favorite dish, American chopped suey....but it was just the same dish. It's delicious and it's funny to me that everyone thinks theirs is unique. Yummy!

Awesome! Grew up with this in New England. My mom made it just like this. This was served at least once a week for school lunch also! Another good regional dish is Fall River New Bedford style chow mein.

Me as well. I'm from Mass and my Mother made her's very similar -- big difference though: my Mother uses "Stewed Tomatoes" and this brings the Dish to a higher level ....

This was a weekly meal growing up in Maine. Every once in a while a package of cream cheese was tossed in. Cook this, crack a tin of brown bread and chow down

Just my opinion :) Anytime you add tomato paste you should saute it for a few minutes before adding other tomato products or liquids. It really adds to the sweetness.

ok, I have to say this. I just scrolled down to like this video and saw 4 ppl disliked. regardless of what we all call it, how can anyone dislike this Classic. it just Un - American. I bet they don't like ice cream, popcorn or baseball either

They're haters Rick, I get them on every video.....they think it hurts my channel or my feelings....but in reality I still get credit for their view whether they like the video or not! I think it's funny to be honest! They probably need to find a 'safe space' because someone has offended them by loving America! LOL
Thank you Rick for your support!

My father would make this when my mother was out of town or sick. His always added celery, not cooked overly much to give it a little texture. He'd make a huge batch and it was always better the second and third night. I think that was why he liked it, cook once and have for several meals.

    • @TheWolfePit
      @TheWolfePit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

This is definitely a dish that is better the next day or two! Thank you Maria!

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I do almost exactly what you did when I make my chop suey. I am a newenglander, I have made many chop suey's and everybody raves about it. If you want to try something different one day i make it the same way you do but start by caramelizing the onions but then i use 1/2 ground beef and 1/2 ground sausage with bell peppers. I also had plenty of red ground pepper flakes and grated cheese as its cooking! It's out of this world! The sausage makes for an incredible flavor. Enjoy with a glass of red wine or a fall or winter beer! Yummy, cheap, comfort food!!

This was great and made around 9 adult meals + a little extra that I had after!! One thing I will say is that a 12" cast iron pan didn't cut it size wise, and I had to use a wok, just a tip in case anyone sees this. Thank you for the recipe!!

It was on the middle and high school lunch menu in my town in MA once every week, and I loved it, but my mother never made it, and I never learned to make it, so I hadn't had it in about 48 years and had pretty much forgotten about it! Then I saw a FB post in a Boston group that reminded me about how it's a New England thing (and it's not goulash! There are differences!), and I just had to have it. I made it with your recipe last night and it was fantastic! Thank you!

If extra lean ground beef is used, you can add olive oil, or as in this recipe, the butter adds a ton of flavor.

This is exactly what I grew up on in the Boston and Cape Cod area. I would dearly love to have your take on fish cakes. We used dry cod (baccala) that we soak, rehydrate, and rinse, and rinse, then with mashed potatoes and mashed fish mixed, we make fish cakes dipped in egg then cornmeal, then fried in a cast iron skillet. Anyway....fish cakes and baked beans are a staple in my area. I'd love to have you give it a whack. Thanks for considering it and thanks for all of your great videos. You are awesome!!

I am in New England. My father made it the same way except no garlic, no spices (other than salt). Instead, he added a packet of Sloppy Joe Mix, let it simmer and serve it up. My wife, who also comes from New England uses beef, canned tomatoes and then adds the pasta and serves it. She calls it 'Slurp". I myself have another name for it. Before she met me and I made my mother's Sunday Red Sauce she'd eat sauce from a jar.

My dad used to make this growing up. My mom could burn a salad lol. He would make nearly the same exact way but add an additional red bell pepper for “presentation”. Add some cheese on top and that if

Great meal my man. Single father that is tired of cooking the same things and this was perfect and easy. Although I will say the way things are going nowadays you're 10 dollars a series is going to end up being ramen noodles because where I'm at it cost $10 just for a pound of burger LOL

I’m allergic to tomatoes 🍅. I use canned red peppers. This looks great. Gonna try it this weekend.

Not a new england thing but an American classic. I've been eating this stuff my whole. We make it at least once a month.

Actually American Chop Suey is a New England dish or term for this dish. There's also American Goulash which I think is more of a classic dish than American Chop Suey, and they're very similar to each other.
