Grew up in Boston it was American Chop Suey. My grandmother made it the best, instead of starting the beef in olive oil, she taught me to start in salt pork. Adds a nice different depth of flavor.

Interesting... did it also have pork in the recipe?

I grew up in mass too and my mom would toss the pasta right in with the meat and onions along with broth, tomato sauce and crushed tomatoes. With a dash of Worcestershire sauce let it all cook down together.

This is the exact basic recipe. Made it dozens of times. Try it, there is nothing not to like. I usually do 2 lbs. of meat, or half hamburger, half sausage. Add garlic with the onions if you like it. We do. Important!! Undercook the elbows since they will then absorb some of the sauce and will be less mushy. Came from Somerville Mass. Always was American Chop Suey.

I grew up and still live in New England which is where it’s called American Chop Suey. Ate it all the time growing up. I believe goulash is the midwestern term for the same. Looks good!

Enjoyed the video. I grew up in Boston and American chop was a staple in our house too. Mom would add some peas to the recipe. It was one of the ways she could get us to eat vegetables. These days I make mine with venison that I've harvested.

    • @homecookbasics

Interesting flavor with the venison. But I must say peas would kill it for me.

My Mother's American Chop suey was just a little different. She would skip the green pepper but add about 2 1/2 cups of cheddar cheese to it. Then put it is a 9X13 baking dish and bake it covered for 20 minutes then another 10 minutes uncovered until the top was nice and browned. It was the best!!

Went back to Fort Riley Ks to visit the inlaws and somehow got roped into watching my 2 nieces while the moms went shopping. I asked them what they wanted for dinner (time not lunch) I could tell the way they looked they had no clue about Dinner at noon time and American Chop Suey and supper. They looked at me like WTF is ACS? Lesson learned.

Way to fancy for American Chop Suey. You’d be laughed out of my 3 decker for this. Here’s what you need to do.
Brown one pound of ground beef with some salt and pepper.
Add one can of Campbell’s tomato soup and a small can of tomato sauce.
Add one cup of prepared elbow macaroni.
    Your done.
    Right ma?
