Tbh the most terrifying thing with a flame trooper is you hiding, while he's searching for you and you can hear his slow pacing and breath from the gas mask.
It depends. Penetrating the fuel tank would just spray out compressed fuel, it would not ignite because there is no oxygen in the tank. Most flamethrowers of the time were powered with nitrogen, which is inert. However, a secondary spark could ignite the now leaking fuel, though very difficult. I only know this cause I operate a flammenwerfer regularly :).
(it matters the fuel) but most fuels dont just light up easily and while another flame could light it a bullet or shell couldn't so shooting the fuel tanks would cause a ignition unless the bullet was a incendiary or a tracer round on the other hand hitting a ammo rack could cause a explosion and then a fire.
It depends on the fuel and the type of bullet used. In WW1, probably not, since it was a new weapon and, unless the fuel was self-oxidizing, there was no real way to reliably ignite it in the tank. Things changed in WW2 though. Tracer bullets had been perfected in late WW1, though were still used almost exclusively for shooting down zeppelins by igniting their hydrogen gasbags. Somewhere between WW1 and WW2, most armies realized that these bullets could also be used to shoot flamethrower operators and all but guarantee an explosion, which would take out the soldiers around them as well. Every squad had at least one guy who always carried a clip or two of tracer bullets, just in case. The Japanese were notorious for their use of tracers.
Here's a tactic I've never seen in film or heard of; spray the fuel as far as it will go into the enemy trenches for five seconds in a sweep, then ignite it and reverse the sweep to ignite the previously discharged fuel. This will have the benefit of laying down fuel down low in the trenches and actually lighting up the adverary directly, rather than just flushing them out with radiant heat from overhead and fear.
Its called a wet shot. We used it quite a bit in the pacific theater against pillboxes and other fortifications. The reason they didnt do that in ww1 was that the ignition source was usually a burning rag or burning fuel soaked cotton. By ww2 flamethrowers had advanced enough that the flame could be turned on and off quickly.

Would shooting the tank actually cause it to explode like in games or movies ? Anyone know ?
It depends. Penetrating the fuel tank would just spray out compressed fuel, it would not ignite because there is no oxygen in the tank. Most flamethrowers of the time were powered with nitrogen, which is inert. However, a secondary spark could ignite the now leaking fuel, though very difficult. I only know this cause I operate a flammenwerfer regularly :).
(it matters the fuel) but most fuels dont just light up easily and while another flame could light it a bullet or shell couldn't so shooting the fuel tanks would cause a ignition unless the bullet was a incendiary or a tracer round on the other hand hitting a ammo rack could cause a explosion and then a fire.
I'm guessing it was the ones in WW2 that exploded.
It depends on the fuel and the type of bullet used. In WW1, probably not, since it was a new weapon and, unless the fuel was self-oxidizing, there was no real way to reliably ignite it in the tank.
Things changed in WW2 though. Tracer bullets had been perfected in late WW1, though were still used almost exclusively for shooting down zeppelins by igniting their hydrogen gasbags. Somewhere between WW1 and WW2, most armies realized that these bullets could also be used to shoot flamethrower operators and all but guarantee an explosion, which would take out the soldiers around them as well. Every squad had at least one guy who always carried a clip or two of tracer bullets, just in case. The Japanese were notorious for their use of tracers.

Here's a tactic I've never seen in film or heard of; spray the fuel as far as it will go into the enemy trenches for five seconds in a sweep, then ignite it and reverse the sweep to ignite the previously discharged fuel.
This will have the benefit of laying down fuel down low in the trenches and actually lighting up the adverary directly, rather than just flushing them out with radiant heat from overhead and fear.
Its called a wet shot. We used it quite a bit in the pacific theater against pillboxes and other fortifications. The reason they didnt do that in ww1 was that the ignition source was usually a burning rag or burning fuel soaked cotton. By ww2 flamethrowers had advanced enough that the flame could be turned on and off quickly.
