Perhaps even more harrowing than the progression towards these new weapons, was the regression back towards the basic weapons from the past. In stark contrast to the advancing technology of the twentieth century, many soldiers who were stuck in the close-corridors of trench warfare found themselves back in the medieval era.

WW1 is one of those wars that came with rare conditions and allowed for lots of things seemingly out of fiction to come about. And it's really cool to see stuff about that kind of thing.

Interesting fact about the US trench knife: a lot of the blades used for those knives were repurposed blades from surplus civil war swords

Interesting Americentric observation.
My grandfather was a 30. cal machine gunner during WWII and carried a trench knife that he said saved his life several times. He gave it to my uncle when he went to Vietnam. Unfortunately he was killed and the knife did not come back w/ his personal belongings.

World war 1 is one of the most interesting conflicts of all time. The mixture of modern and medieval technology combined with the harshness and brutality of trench warfare are just….I feel it gets overshadowed a lot by WWII in media
It surely was the missing link from old and modern warfare.
Well, it was called "the war to end all wars". Not literately ending the wars, but changing them. It showed how a lack of proper technology can lead to brutal and barbaric warfare that can easily be countered with the technology from ww2 and beyond. For sure though, it is the most innovative and interesting war of all time.

Imagine being a 17 year old farmer in 1914, and joining WW1 thinking it's "the war to end all wars" and you're there long enough to see this, imagine what went on in there heads "am I seeing ghosts?" "Why is there stuff from the 1500s?" "Knights in shining armor? What on earth?" And then planes and everything else starts getting made, what a confusing time to be alive then. "The war that started with horses ended with planes"

Definitely the most unique war. It was almost like they were purposely romanticizing the Middle Ages when Europe was last truly at war with each other. Pretty cool
Air warfare for sure romanticized the Middle Ages and knighthood and honor. I'm sure you have heard how pilots felt like medieval knights of the sky. They wouldn't shoot at men who bailed from a plane etc.
@@Spartan265 I thought bailing from a plane in ww1 was still almost certain death just that maybe you wont be a splatter on a destroyed plane but instead be a splatter in the mud so shooting at people bailing would be like shooting at random objects because the bullet holes look cool.

I wouldn't say that middle ages was truly the last time Europe was fighting each other.
@@themenacingpenguin.7152 For allied pilots it was certain death, the allied nations refused to issue parachutes to pilots because they thought it would cause premature bailing and cowardliness. The Germans had no qualms with issuing parachutes, which gave them a much higher survival rate, and probably allowed experience pilots to survive and continue fighting throughout the war.

You can really tell how firearms and equipment went through its own Renaissance period of development. When Renaissance came it was a blast from the past when it comes to art and other aspects, in WW1 it was also a throwback to medieval warfare...

Medieval weapons were used in WW2 as well. A British officer named "Mad" Jack Churchill carried a long bow and Scottish style broadsword...and used them. He was documented to have used the bow for sentry removal on at least one occasion. He also carried a set of bagpipes around, just because he was like that.
Look him up, it's worth the read.

The British Brody helmet and the German stahlhelm we're both based on 14th l century designs. The originals were designed to protect infantry from arrows. The 20th century versions were inspired by these in order to protect against shrapnel.
French Adrian Helmets were based on Burgundian Helmets on 15th century too: La Bourguignotte.

Using Medieval weapons in WW1 showed just how unabashedly brutal and wide ranging the war went to. Those two soldiers bonking each other at the end made me chuckle in this informative entry.

Would make sense for machine gunners in fixed positions… I think the Germans actually did issue armor on a limited basis to their machine gunners…

8:30 I make armor as a semi professional hobby. In my practical research based on the finds in europe, I have found that distributing the weight onto the shoulder, and the hips through articulated plates would fix the back strain issue. It would still be heavy, but as long as you aren't expecting the man to move as a regular soldier would, then yes i could easily see this being used in ww1. The problem is it wouldn't be hard to just bring a larger gun to defeat the armor.
It would actually be a complication. A larger gun and bullet means less and less ammo carried, meaning less capacity for long engagements in which armoured opponents would thrive

One thing to consider though is that it would have to be a bit thicker than your average armor, considering the fact that it would be going up against bullets. Although modern steel helps out a lot with this.
Could issue it on a per small unit basis. One or two guys are the assault troops.
There was a department of the Italian army during the First World War, the Arditi, which used cuirasses called "farina" as basic equipment and were deployed on the front lines above all for the assault on the fortifications.

When the gear makes you look ridiculous, but the Stats are insanely good.
Honestly, medieval armor looks pretty damn good from like a fashion standpoint. I think it's just the mix of medieval/renaissance looking armor being worn by a dude holding a bolt-action rifle that makes it look slightly off.

I own a very early WW1 US trench knife it has a hard wood handle a 11 in blade and is basically a mini machete and even after all these decades it's still razor sharp . the blade is amazing I don't know who built them for the army but it's one of the very best knifes I ever owned it's ridiculous how hard the metal is and how well it takes an edge

It’s probably one of the iterations of US bolo knives. They were issued a lot to medical corp as well as machine gun crews for clearing their sectors of fire/improving their fighting positions. Henry Johnson used one during the actions that lead to his eventual posthumous MOH

@@RandomFurry07 yeah the Maxim gun was design by Hiram Stevens Maxim and given design for the British and it's Allies still the US made use of the Maxim MG and design with a double gripe for HMG and handle grip for LMG still I'm glad believe simple History now tells about this

The Tomahawk is not a medieval weapon and saying it is is like saying a knife is a medieval weapon, not it’s just a bladed weapon that’s used today..we’ve..always used and developed bladed weapons..

It’s even more interesting and sad to a degree to know that a lot of these soldiers were no older than 25, with a quite a bit even being under 20. I don’t even think 20 year olds today know what time period in years consists of the medieval era
The youngest was just 8 years old. He joined a Serbian artillery unit after his parents died. Momčilo Gavrić was his name.
This is why I’m so fascinated with WW1, it was the first modern war yet still had elements that were from the 18th and 19th century and before

I could easily see one of the 'mixed reviews' by American soldiers regarding the trench knife in WW2 being: "They have friggin' katanas, and you want me to take them on with this can opener? It does work well as a can opener. 2/5 stars"
World War One was a unique conflict and I wish they made more movies about it. A movie that had this tech in it would have an interesting aesthetic. I think my favorite would be the trench catapult.

Don't forget that During WW1 cavalry was still around and even tho at those times they already had pistols, rifles and grenades, some still used sabers and even spears.
Russians even had "tachanka" units and those were basically like mobile battle chariots with Maxim M1910 HMG's.
Even in WW2, Soviets and Germans still had battle charioteers, some with mortars, some with light anti-air systems and even light anti-tank versions.
Polish WW2 cavalry attacked German panzer division... those cavalrymen were armed with AT rifles and AT grenades, which is just crazy..
Switzerland had cavallry until 1972.
With the grenade catapult you could use a parascope to see where it lands

Oh yeah the Arditis were the first to introduce their very own Sentry or Sentinel the Americans meanwhile yes they used this as well in early 1917 im glad Diced make such accurate part is those Sentinel or Sentry are part of the offensive trench raiders Arditis meanwhile focus on special missions such as AA clearing Bunker clearing Field Guns and Artillery position but they're somewhat similar to the American Marine Raider having different goals and missions they gave

Some years ago I did colonial re-enactments. I was able to get a replica war club used by north Indians during the French and Indian war. I bought it from a person wit a duplicating machine. He had an original war club as a pattern. He was making these war clubs for the Army rangers in Afghanistan.

The only nation well known for using metal armour was Italy for the Entente before it was retired by all armies, as their Arditi Elite used plate armour

This part reminded me of Luca Cocchiola, the one we play as in the Arditi mission from Battlefield 1.
I would assume the trench catapult was built less for the reason of not having to stand up and throw hand grenades (as that can be done from the safety of the trench) but more because it has a longer range, a more predictable, accurate and adjustable flight path, and to have a form of very light artillery to be used and directed more individually by smaller unit sizes.

Thank you for making this video! I always knew that WW1 had a medieval vibe going for it thanks to its body armor, maces and the German/British culture of associating their militaries with knights.
An element that was missing were the extra helmet plates that were attached to the M16 Stahlhelm and the more flexible, segmented German body armor. Which, in itself, could be seen as a nod back to the Roman lorica segmentata.
Can you imagine seeing a guy wearing a full suit of knights armor while also firing a MG... That sounds so badass but terrifying.

You can still play it. And if on pc there are historical mods and others to update it. Which makes everything 10x better and more historical looking. And yes, that includes all classes, extra classes, elite pick up classes ect for all factions (or faction branches).

Getting Battlefield 1 Nostalgia how they included the Sentinel and Trench Raider in the game
Scholagladitoria has a good video about Trench knives where he reads various British manuscripts from the time.
One thing that stuck with me, was a proposal of how such a knife should be used (I forget by who, someone in the British leadership).
He proposes that the knife should be held in a reversed grip, and used to stab at the faces of enemies in a busy trench. Not to try to kill, but to cause as much chaos as possible.
This has always been interesting. Imagining knights fighting in trench warfare is insane.

Nice! I would recommend you find a way to get a gun though if possible. As much as I love medieval weapons, they just can't hold up to guns in many aspects for self defense. Plus, it's always good to have a couple layers of defense. Also, excellent name.

Heck a decent spear and shield can keep a horde of vaxxzombies at bay in a hallway; if and when "they" activate the dormant zombie virus they put in each dose.
And remember, you may need silver tipped steel to pierce the chitinous hides of the ones who got 36 booster shots.

I carried a Cold Steel Recon Tanto and an M7 bayonet to go along with my M16 when I was in the infantry.
The Germans were masters at conventional warfare therefore did not need these cheap trinkets to achieve their goal. They were able to do just as much damage with bolt action rifles as the French and British did with their submachine guns and light machine guns.

But the true melee weapon is the good ol Shovel
One thing common for the Kit for BF1 they had the Armored Bulky MG trooper known as the Sentry or Sentry Kit was used for the Italian Arditis for clearing enemy position that no regular unit ever accomplished it was also lessful exported to the British as well and the US made used for breakthru
You have to give that Body Armor guy an A+. Yes it was shelved but it takes some balls to prove your invention works by getting shot with rifles at close to point blank range.

Among many popular improvised weapons was a simple spike dagger made from a rail spike that a regimental blacksmith could bend into a primitive 1918 trench knife style weapon
