    Something important to remember when determining your caps: Energy is quadrupled when velocity is doubled. So going from 70 to 140 fps yields 4 times the energy per hit.

    In all seriousness I'm glad you made a video talking about safety. Its a topic that really needs to be discussed more as the nerf community continues to grow. Like you said it only takes one really bad incident in a public park for nerf to be treated like airsoft or paintball in the eyes of the law and the public.

    I appreciate you posting videos addressing these topics. In today's culture it only takes one person pushing things way too far to ruin everything for everyone. Regardless of culture or local law rule zero need always apply.

      Yeah, I feel you there in a different space: Board Games. That rule 0 is my big rule for 'my table' as well as the venue where we play board games in public (Granted, they listed it as Rule #1, so, yeah). A bit tangental but you'd be surprised at how some board game stuff can cause some heatedness (Games where you have to beat down other players actively like, say, Risk, or games where plans just collide in a very messy way. Imagine building a castle in a game, in a situation where you and 2 other players have the right stuff for a specific tower for their castle, but it comes down to who can get to the space first). I curated my boardgames to be less of the former, at the very least.

      Ahh yes, Rule 0. Inverse of "more fun for everyone."
      While it is fun to try and push limits to make yourself or equipment, stronger, faster, better, the core reason for being there should be observed.
      Captain thanks for posting the video and giving anecdotal evidence that helps show the impact of behavior that a player may genuinely view as harmless, but impacts others significantly.

    For "no tac gear games" you can use my solution. Use a laptop satchel bag for your magazines. I think it's preferable not to get the ones that unzip all the way down and open like a styrofoam to-go box from a restaurant just so it's less likely that you mags will spill, but I can get one of these bags for $5 at Goodwill and fit upto eight 22 round full length stick mags.
    As for Dystopia Rising, I think they should get rid of the stock only rule, and have stock only ammo and an fps cap of 100.

    I wouldn't be surprised if this became video of the week in the next nerf news. Also, an additional safety tip for the players that you have mentioned before but is worth mentioning again is that you should never aim for any part of the head, regardless of whether that person has eye protection and/or a helmet on. And even if your dart actually hits that person in the head when you weren't trying to hit the head, you can at least apologize about it, despite the fact that everyone knows most darts are so inaccurate that you would struggle to hit the broadside of a barn

    As for painted blasters it's why my HMG build has not just black and orange, i added a third medium gray to the color scheme as a middle color. It's not dark enough to be mistaken but does not clash with either black or orange, and in general it is visually distinct enough to avoid any public confusion.

    I know Dystopia Rising set down a No Half Darts rule back when half dart usually meant old school slugs and stefans, and just, never changed that. The other concern being they don't want modified darts because then you have to regulate what modifications, quality control, etc. They lean on the fact that if everything is factory made and used as directed, then any major problems are probably manufacturer problems, and not legally in their court which is wise when you're a nation-wide LLC.

    My philosophy on loopholes is generally to find them and ask mods about them, but if a moderator says no, it's a no. As long as it's not pestering, I see no problem with looking for loopholes as long as you make sure to clear whatever you do beforehand and understand that if it's broken, a rule can always be created to say no or a moderator can just decide you can't. The worst thing that results there is we have a laugh about a silly technicality and then the loophole gets patched up before use.
    I also like to think that looking for loopholes can be useful in helping solidify rules. If you find a loophole that's absolutely broken and you point it out to the mods, they know what meeds fixing. The first step to fixing things is finding something that needs fixing.

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. That is very different from looking for loopholes with the intention of exploiting them. What you are describing is basically Beta testing and is VERY valuable to game designers.

    I am not a nerfer, but as an airsofter I feel there is some overlap in our hobbies. Eye pro is a must on every field i've played. Granted, there is a difference between a plastic bb that can easily shoot someone's eye out and an objectively soft foam dart. Some nerf guns can outshoot airsoft guns and they hurt quite a bit. A lot of airsoft fields have MED, based on energy output. for example, and don't quote on me on this, each field has their own specific rules. at my home field, 1.6 joules typically is 50ft MED. MED is minimum engagement distance. It's not always followed as in the heat of battle its hard to gauge distance but it's a good guideline. Personally I have shot someone with 50ft med at 2 feet. it was an accident, and I apologized afterwards, but I shot him in the neck, if I had a highly modified gun I could've easily pierced his jugular. This isn't me demonizing modified guns or the sport in general, just an illustration of how quickly things can go wrong. Safety is everyone's responsibility, and save for a few hard and fast rules, (eye pro, fps limits etc) it is more a guideline. Like Cap said, it's more about the spirit of the rule than the law.

    In regards to safety, whenever I go thrifting I buy whatever painted blasters I see, as I don't want some little kid getting it and going out in public with a toy that looks like a firearm and causes a whole big controversy because they get shot by a police officer. Not saying I'm smarter than everyone in this regard, but I know I can't trust that random strangers will understand what I understand in means of keeping the hobby alive and fun for all of us.

    For me I believe that if your nerf gun doesn’t have a orange tip or doesn’t have a unrealistic paint job (neon colors or not black ) it shouldn’t be allowed in a game, I also think it would be a great idea or have a wager that says you’ll follow the rules and that your safety is to follow the rules and if you don’t then you won’t be allowed to play

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even orange tips and paint jobs really depend on the game. Hyper-realistic WWII LARP on private property in Poland where orange tips are not legally required? Not so much. City park in Chicago, absolutely.
      And yes, waivers are always a good idea.

    Question, how far do you think FPS caps should be taken? Like if I’m cronoing at 153 at a 150 cap event would you shut it down? Crono it again? Just asking for an opinion.

    • @Fusako8
      @Fusako8 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I take the average of 5 darts. If none go above the cap, it is good. If the average is a couple below the cap but there is an outlier, I test again. If it is consistently above I say no. Too much toeing the line makes the line pointless.

    Hey Cap, just wanted to add, *most* Hunting Rated Crossbows shoot at about 300-350 FPS. So yes anything over about 200 I would say probably isn't safe!
    EDIT: Unless proper gear is used and everyone knows that it will probably sting!

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct that f=ma. Mass and Speed are what determine how hard something hits. This means that a 1 gram dart traveling at 400fps has 4x the force of a 1 gram dart traveling at 100fps and thus 4x the "destructive potential." Obviously still not deadly, but far more likely to cause permanent eye damage. I have heard stories of stock darts causing detached retinas at close range. And remember what I said in the video. Different games will have different standards for what is "safe."
      Additionally, one of the topics I failed to mention in this video is modified ammo. People have been known to add metal to the heads of their darts to increase the mass to improve performance. At that point it starts getting very questionable in my opinion. A steel washer or lead sinker (both of which I have heard of being used in Nerf Darts) traveling at 400fps is a WHOLE different story.

    • @mrshootyshooter
      @mrshootyshooter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CaptainXavier I got shot by a "Special Dart" once, it was a TACK glued to a dart. But yes if someone does have the proper gear then 2, 3, or 400 would be okay. But bare skin shot by 400+FPS would definitely hurt, adding Metal or other Mods could cause serious damage depending on the area hit.

    Surprised nothing came up about terminology. That's a hot topic I've gotten called an asshole for having an opinion on, despite being someone who likes and handles real firearms, and respects proper etiquette that should be observed when in public versus private, because... Saying "gun" in public can elicit unintentional panic.

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were a number of topics that got missed or omitted. Dart types and terminology were among them. Referring to Nerf toys as "blasters" and not "guns" was, I thought, pretty universal at this point. I still catch myself every once and a while.

    Not to be that guy, but as of Dystopia Rising 3.0 rules there is nothing in the rules book that I can see regarding using only stock blasters. There are even some locations that are allowing custom 3d printed blasters and modified blasters with some restrictions. One location allows modded and 3d printed flywheelers, but they can not use more than a 2s lipo. At my chapter I run my Dart Zone Pro (with plastic barrel and DZ waffles). These are being allowed as each chapter is now being allowed to set their own safety rules separate from what the DR overlords recommend. I even have tenitave permission to run a Caliburn at my chapter.
    Ok. So to amend this. The person who ran their DZP and shot someone in the face was not following the rules of "guns" at DR. The DZP is not a "stock" blaster, but can be ran at DR safely if you follow the rules. I also made sure that my location owners knew that the DZP does shoot up to 170 fps or more than double that of most factory stock Nerf brand dart blasters. We also did a safety check with it. So while it is a loophole in the rules it was also not handled in a way that was in accordance with other safety rules of DR. This is why I am allowed to run a DZP at my DR chapter, but also realise that other chapters my not allow it to be ran. Each chapter gets to say what is or is not allowed. So I guess I should count my blessings in being able to run my DZP at game.

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, this was one of the chapters in my area and they have different rules. Which very much proves my point of this whole video, even within different chapters of DR safety standards are different.

    I would definitely say the pvc hpa isn't an issue as far as exploding if done right, mine is rated for 240psi, I run it at 120psi with a pump that is only capable of hit 120 psi my issue with them is 90% of the time they hit way too hard unless the pressure tank is very tiny. My pvc gun can shoot 240gr lead bullets at probably 350fps(I didn't chrono it but I goes through 5/8" plywood at 15yards.) Around 100 yards slightly angled singled.

      @@tatsuhirosatou5513 did I not make that clear in this take? Like I said I did 3 takes. In at least one of them I made it very clear that it is possible to make a safe PVC tank...mine just probably wasn't and I certainly could not have proved it was.

    • @tatsuhirosatou5513
      @tatsuhirosatou5513 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CaptainXavier it was a little unclear, but you are right on it being hard to prove what would be safe and unsafe to someone that hasn't messed with pvc cannons alot. I've been building pvc cannons for a little over a decade and have learned that the things to pay attention to for pure safty are the pressure ratings of the pvc, ball valve, tire valve, and PVC cement/glue and pay attention to where your tire valve is mounted, most schedule 40 pvc is good, 1/2" has a 600psi rating and 1" is 450psi. Any metal tire valve rated for full size pickup tires is fine at 120psi and I like to mount them in the flat of an end cap to get a good sold seal. If you are still nervous you could always fiberglass over the tank too.

    Safety should be paramount.. doesn't take much force to dislodge ya cornea.. eye protection should be set to a standard. They do in paintball and airsoft... and some nerf blasters shoot pretty close to paintball and airsoft fps.

    I live in Poland, no Orange tips required , Unlike Germany our law limits not the FPS but the projectile Energy to 17J for a full dart that is a lot of FPS... another thing is common sense. The one Nerf Arena that I know here is like 17m long..... For my Stryfe or Caliburn this is kind of dull... all in all it is all a balance between your community, local laws, enthusiast and common sense.

      Exactly, different countries tries different rules. Most US States have very different laws than each other. But once you know the laws of your area then it should be, as you say, a matter if common sense. Sadly, many people lack that... :(

      @CaptainXavier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you do this in a genuinely helpful manner it is very valuable to game designers. They cannot think of everything and sometimes miss critical things that can make or break the game. It is a form of ongoing Beta test. Having someone spot these issues and bring them up before hand is far better than someone exploiting it mid game and the designers having to either allow it and risk ruining the game or getting all authoritarian and coming across like tyrants.

    I don't understand why someone needs a blaster to shoot over 200 fps. Maybe if they're long range only then I could understand but at that point it's more akin to airsoft than nerf.

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are lots of reasons. In Australia, for example, Airsoft and Paintball are banned. So instead they mod Nerf to take the place of those two sports. In the US, Nerf is allowed in places that Airsoft and PaintBall are not, like city parks and college campuses. The darts do not harm the site and can be cleaned up. It allows for the same level of competitive play without the issue inherent to Airsoft or Paintball.
