  • A fan asked me to do a video about bullying and I felt it was a very good idea. There was so much more I wanted to say but felt 20 mins of me blathering was enough. There will be a follow up video when I am no so sick that will hopefully be a bit more positive. Thank you all for your support.

I have been taking engineering for the past 2-3 years just because I love tinkering with Nerf blasters and just random stuff, and some of my classmates have picked on me but I continued doing what I love and I still do it to prove them wrong, to prove that bullying me will not stop me from doing what I love.

Cap, I used to watch a lot of other nerf youtubers, but you and most people within your community are the best in my opinion and represent the hobby as it should be. It's just a hobby, there is never a need to belittle someone about if they like springers more than flywheels, or if they think the centurion is a good blaster or not. And when you do disagree you all do it respectfully. You and your fellow nerfers are humble and are the best the hobby has to offer. Also another good trait is your positivity, but not at the expense of honesty. When you dislike a blaster you say, "its not really my style" and "well at least it is good for parts" You always can find something good to say about a blaster and that makes watching your videos enjoyable, fun, and insightful. Keep up the good work!

I am really glad to see a more serious look on the matter. I believe TH-camrs such as Beret, Jangular, Out is Darts (no joke, he emailed me a full detailed parts list for a stryfe mod) and yourself are excellent when it comes to having fun with the hobby and trying to teach others and welcome them to the hobby. Nerf is where I found safety and security from a lot of anxiety and depression, and I am very appreciative of the openness provided by your channel as well as many others.

I actually got 'bullied' in a conversation with a girl on tinder about my relationship with the hobby. I get that some people just don't get it but it was still a bit hurtful. I sent a screenshot of it to one of my group chats and we all had a laugh about it.

  • @panda.monium

I think some aspects of bullying may come from what internal logic is saying is well intentioned - the sarcastic comment of telling someone to google it I think has a psychology of "Well if I just give them the answer straight up they're only just going to learn how to ask people for directions instead of finding it themselves."
But I think perhaps when you do catch yourself bullying someone it is perhaps a moment to reflect on the question "Am I really still enjoying this hobby?" I know I've asked myself that several times when getting cranky over admin issues in organising Nerf events.

  • @alexprice9573

i had a teacher in elementary who blatantly told my mom that bullying is a part of life and that she will do it to me no mater what. I F#&King hated that school.

Ironically, I've always found that the most healthy community is competitive Nerf, mostly thanks to Jangular's care. Somehow the most problematic and elitist moments I've found have been mostly on r/nerf, sometimes on the nerf community facebooks
Thanks for doing this video. I hope you dont mind I link it to people in the future in case someone goes on an elitist rant.

I think afterworlds summed it up well in rule number 1 "Don't be a dick". My interactions with the nerf community have been mostly positive. Walcoms7 discord has some great people and i have had alot of people help me out (as even captain xaviers comment section). I only mention this because I imagine both Captain Xavier and walcom have alot of the same fans. As being someone that only started modding a few months ago everyone has helped me alot! That being said, get enough people together and you are bound to get some toxic people. I do like how Captain Xavier strictly runs his comment sections. Long story short, I think your doing it right. You are a positive addition to this community.

About four years ago, when I was just getting back into nerf, I watched a lot of Drac, because I felt he did a great job of being super welcoming into the community. At that time, I watched a ton of videos from the eastern seaboard and felt invited to join these mergers. However, I think that, while growing up is important, Drac grew into a businessman before a hobbyist, which may be best for him, but I think makes him come off as less welcoming to the community. For instance, while he made a super great mod guide that made super great reference to all the people living off this hobby, like Luke from out of darts and Addie from Foamblast, as well as himself, he still was making a mod guide for beginners that would ultimately cost one hundred sixty dollars using the parts he showed. Honestly, I think those closer to he West Coast, such as yourself, Walton, Luke, and Beret, have come to better embody the spirit of nerf. I’m not saying that any of you aren’t “less grown up” than Drac, all of you, with the exception of Luke, from what I can tell, have outside jobs besides nerf, and I think that allows you all to be more playful since it’s still just a hobby. I think that in the case of Luke, him having a family of his own also helps him to take the hobby less seriously. Not to make a diss track on Drac, but his content leads me to believe that he’s less happy than he used to be, which makes me sad.

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is VERY much why I have made no attempt, despite being given the opportunity several times, to make a career out of Nerf. I have a career that I genuinely enjoy and that allows me to indulge in the hobby far more than most can. I am unimaginably lucky in that. But I don't want it to become a job. To become a chore. I occasionally find myself slipping into that with the amount of content I produce. I may have to scale it back to avoid burn out. But it is still just a hobby for me.

    • @CaptainXavier

I have no doubt. It is always about the people. I imagine most are super cool folks. The ones I encountered were not and thus I never got into the hobby. Imagine if that had not been the case and I had gone as deep into Airsoft as I have in Nerf? That is the importance of NOT treating new people like that. You never know who you are turning away from your hobby. :)

Yeah there is some gatekeeping and elitist behaviors online. I've really onoy dealt with it on Reddit r/Nerf. I posted a video for my 1k giveaway just as a thank you to the community and I got ripped for some of my older videos. I have stayed away from there since then but other than that the online community has been awesome. My local comnunity has been great as well. I met Jangular, Foamblast and some others at BTA before I even knew they were bigger names in the hobby and they were so cool and welcoming along with everyone else. I am just happy that the positivity outweighs the negativity in this hobby by a huge margin.

Like how coop making fun of the deploy forever changed the community, but also videos like this can steer the community in another direction. And this community has really chosen positive role models to prop up creating a mostly positive community for us all to enjoy. There are tons of airsofr cheater and airsofr rage reaction videos but that's not really a thing here. Instead it's all about the making and the mods and the fun

Competitive nerf has its place, but not everybody can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on $50 or less toy. I am fine with stock blasters, Humans versus Zombies at Nation Vs Zombies, my first ever HvZ game I was using stock blasters, and I had a blast, I got to meet people from all over the world and made a lot of good friends, but I also met some elitist jerks, I ran a dart rearming station and I did not tolerate bullying. Especially to the newer nerfers like me. I was not the only 40+ year old that this was their first HvZ event. Nerf is supposed to be about fun, it is a lot like dungeons and dragons, there are no losers in Nerf, we are ALL winners, we are having fun, getting exersise, meeting new people, and just being nerds. Honestly I have more fun in HvZ once I have been tagged than I do as a human. Build each other up, make your words sweet in case you have to eat them later on and above all, be good to each other. If you want to mod, do it,, if you are good at modding, pass your skills on, that way the hobby grows. All bullying does is tear someone down, be a friend not a bully, be a mentor, not a bully. If you do this, our hobby will grow.

    And of course
Captain Xavier, the person that always take time to educate not how to break 200+fps but how to repair or improve a nerf blaster. And Chaylo, no person is perfect, we all have made mistakes and done things we shouldnt have. But it takes a good person to realize it and take responsibility for it.
    Keep doing what you do.

    HEER HEER.
I've covered this and so has Jangular in the past, I'm happy to see it come up again from your point of view. Well said.
Although I'd like to point out that the attitudes you mention in the airsoft community are not ones I've seen. I've played airsoft for 15 years, and nerf for 2-3 years now. I see THE SAME attitudes in both sports. I'm also told by this "they" people that paintballers are just violent paint seekers and I really don't believe that either.
The one big thing I'm wanting to oppose is the bullying BETWEEN sports, as well as the bullying within the sport.

We should never let what others say define who we are. I want to thank you, drac, jangular, and Beret for keeping me in the hobby. You guys keep it funny but helpful. Never stop flinging foam!

I agree 100% Captain. You said it perfectly. The Nerf community is supposed to be a fun and diverse one. The fact that there is so many different blasters out there proves it. Everyone has different tastes be it springer, flywheel, stock, or modded. Theres something for everyone of any age. And as a victim of bullying I can say that it has a terrible effect on people for the rest of their lives. Theres no need for bullying of any kind. Be kind and respectful of others. If someone asks what seems to you as a trivial question, answer it respectfully. No need to be rude. If you have a different opinion, then agree to disagree. Be welcoming of newcomers to the community. Show them how to have fun and enjoy it. Nerf was meant to be fun and should always be that way.

And they'll stop ,and give the kid reassurance that it's ok.

My views on bullying are a bit different than yours. With out getting into any details I spent most of my educational life (and college) being beat on and stuffed into lockers. I don't take my hand off a chair till I have sat down due to this. Admittedly, my opinion is not a popular one, having lived through it and the "solutions" that were tried made me cynical and with a poor out look on people. Also, since my father was a product engineer so I look at stuff and see were its going to fail. I refer to it as "negative realism" not pessimism, their no fun. Be it physical or an idea. At some date, when convenient for you, I would like have a discussion about it and perhaps take it further than that.…..oddly, that last part sounded like a vague threat LoL.

  • @ShinKyuubi

That's something I can agree on..doesn't matter where you go in the hobby search, there are always elitist. In Gunplay it's usually people that go all out in tricking out their Gunpla with weathering, panel lines, and paint in place of stickers..and if you just don't feel comfortable with your skills in any of that some of them can just look down on you. Also I'm quite sick of the "It's a Jolt reskin" joke myself...it was funny the first couple of times but now it's just...old and annoying. In NERF I'm the guy who wants to run either an old west gear set or a complete sniper set because in FPS (the few I play) I like playing as a sniper when I can, but since I don't really mod anything I'd be looked down on more than likely by the elitist who mod the crud out of EVERYTHING they have that is possible.

There's a youtuber called justajolt (I think). He does unusual things, and certainly encourages using whatever you like, or have, in a nerf battle. For example he makes a lot of his own Tactical gear from duct tape. I think he encourages positivity in nerf better than anyone else that I've seen.

Some people take things FAR too seriously, especially in the online community. Between gate-keeping, sabotage of competitors, elitism, and the whole sense of "firsts" somehow giving you complete ownership of a concept or idea and thus other people are ripping you off and must be publicly called out, it has really ruined my desire to be part of the Nerf community, especially on discord.

I was into racing rc biggies and trucks at the Tacoma rc raceways a few years ago... I raced hard for a year straight to make it onto mod class, had a setup that was just fast enough without making my wallet bleed out, but I had my machine criticized for how it wasn't using top spec components by a couple of guys racing with the same chassis. It went on for a few weeks, and then I ended up selling the buggy and getting a racing truck since the truck drivers were a bit more chill when it comes to vehicle setups, basically as long as it ran fast it was good.
However, the truck made my wallet cry, so I sold it and ever so slowly got back into nerf, I just need to finish my longshot build

I went most of my school years getting picked on. Even after school, I still tried to fit in where I could, but I finally reached an age where I stopped caring. I see how things have changed over the years, and I have 2 kids, and it scares me to think that at any given time that could happen to them. I will admit, I am no saint by a long shot (no pun intended) most people who meet me may don't get me at first, but once they do, they see me for me. And even in this hobby of ours, I try to be helpful where I can, but I have done the, just goggle it sin as well. This was a well done video and hopefully will cause a few people to pause and rethink things before making that reply.

This is what we need. Everyone should be able to feel welcome no matter what they prefer or believe in. This is how we can increase the amount of new nerfers coming in, but also new nerf modders coming in as well. And with more of this comes a larger market for nerf shenanigans, and with a larger market more people come in because they see something somewhere that really seems like it would fit them, and the cycle continues and we become bigger and bigger, and grow in a positive way as a community as a whole. It’s a bit magical.

Okay, I've been a faithful fan and follower of your channel from the get go. THIS is by far my favorite vid you have done to date.
I'm the product/result of bullying for elementary junior and senior high school (even from within the nerf community to a degree). I fought my way through (sometimes physically) to arrive where I am today. I have transcended it, moved on as difficult as it was. And to make it clear I do not condone violence of any type.. One thing I try to instill in the younglings that used to come into my shop/store is not to pass judgement on those different from yourself, have fun in whatever you choose to do and NEVER do something to someone you wouldn't want done to you.
We are the Nerds, We are the Outcasts..
Elitism and gatekeeping has no place here.
Pssst!! I can and have made a kick ass Deploy, so there.
    Thanks Cap,

Well said! I completely agree with everything said in this video.
I feel we’ve made significant progress in this area as a hobby, but it continues to come up as an issue. This issue is one of the reasons I really wasn’t a fan of Nerfhaven when it was more of a thing.
Because we are such a small hobby, it makes no sense to do anything that could push newer or younger players away. Telling people to google things or basically “figure it out yourself” because it’s a common question risks pushing people away who might have gotten more involved.
I know there are a lot of people who stay away from the Reddit or Facebook pages because they feel that people there treat newer people and people with different opinions disrespectfully and unkindly.
I’ve seen those kind of comments, but usually it’s by a very small number of people. The majority of people in these groups are happy to help with questions, and are perfectly friendly.
Some of the rude/disrespectful comments come from things that the community does that are unsafe. The whole drama surrounding IMR’s is a good example. A lot of these people are trying to keep people from using IMR’s and trustfires because they know that it’s unsafe, and don’t want newer players to get hurt. However, _how_ you phrase your comments can make a large difference. You can explain why not to do something without being a jerk about it.
