I noticed this in the bottom of the description: "2 lives x g forces 18? almost zip up it's cold and Night falls fast blown Cover Like snowflakes." Is there a significance to this? It's interesting and I'm very intrigued.
streglof Yeah this policy is an example of extremely outdated thinking. Back in WW2 it was cruel to out Japanese people into US concentration camps but you cannot deny Japan was a country that had mastered espionage. Plus they were all Japanese. Nowadays many ISIS sympathizers are American, as we have seen dumb teens trying to leave for terrorist countries. Plus prior administrations were more effective. In 2012 Obama achieved making immigration reach net zero, look it up.
No I was talking about the refugees, not people with greencards. I'm not sure its Islamophobic, though it appears that way. Trump has no problem having business with UAE and Pakistan.
no, because it's NOT ABOUT ISLAM, get it through your skulls. Say it with me THESE ARE POLITICAL SANCTIONS, it's about these countries governments, their actions or lack thereof.
Thank you so much for speaking up with a passionate, clear voice & fact-based arguments on this hot mess of an order! Voices like yours are so important!
On an internet with way too many people shouting their own viewpoints and loudly and angrily as possible, I really appreciate this informative, educational break. Thank you.
Medicinal Healing Herbs you are confused, and my political beliefs are moderate but have nothing to do with liking anime and that is simply a common in-joke among anime fans... unless you're doing some kind of weird trolling that doesn't make sense? In which case try harder, I wonder if there's an online class you could take that will tell you how to become funnier.
Thank you for talking about this, John. I know these sorts of things are not always something you all want to discuss, but this is just so important. I'm so glad to see you lending your voice.
Thank you John for giving insight on the Executive Order while also ending on a positive note. Your content is great because it offers explanations and analysis instead of arousing hateful emotion and fear.
It is so refreshing to hear an intelligent person speak on this issue. I have recently realized that with so many people blaming and arguing and pointing fingers that I have lost sight of the facts and have gotten swept up in the hate. Well now at least I know the facts and my emotions are justified. Good to know. I stand with all people unless proven otherwise by the law.
I have endless respect for this man, reinforced by every video he makes. Thank you, John, for your voice of reason and compassion amid the overwhelming chaos of this time.
This is classic Trump "art of the deal". He is putting in place an as-extreme-as-possible policy on a temporary basis. Then when he announces his extreme vetting it will seem reasonable by comparison to the temporary rules not the historical rules.
My thoughts exactly. A lot of noise, on which he'll have to compromise, but even the compromise will be a step in his direction. Not to mention it distracts from all the other daft things he's doing... Kind of makes me wonder whether somebody's keeping a list of all those daft things, so they can be reverted the second he leaves office ^_^
Why are people so alarmed *now*? Trump seems to be doing a pretty good job of doing exactly what he said he would. He ran on these exact issues as the main foundation of his campaign and won.
Well, from what I understood, most of his supporters were "taking him seriously, but not literally". Every Trump supporter I talked to during the election told me I was crazy, I was taking him too literally, and he wouldn't be able to accomplish most of the items on his platform. Basically, they all thought he was just saying that stuff to get elected, and so did many people who opposed him. But now, slowly, everyone (including those who voted for him) is realizing that we should have been taking him very literally after all, because he did indeed mean what he was saying.
Why? because most of the voting public voted against him and lets not forget many representatives of him and the GOP came out and said things like the wall were hyperbole. At the very least the man is seriously lacking of ethics or even empathy. Not to mention the way he attempts to bull government officials and companies on twitter or the endorsement of Fox news on twitter. If he continues at this rate he will be remembered as the worst president in the history of the United States and may even face trial when he is out of office.
Smerlin Disregarding the other intricacies that could be involved in that statistic, your argument is already invalid, because, in case you didn't notice, there were more than two presidential candidates.
I love how calm you are when you're talking about this. It makes it very easy to understand what you're saying and you're able to get your own opinions in without being biased because you have facts to support it. Thank you for not just screaming 'trump is doing this, this and this all wrong.'
First up, thank you for making such a detailed, informative video. This stuff id bringing home for me just how difficult it is to wade through all this information about the situation, even when striving to find reliable sources and observe them with a critical eye. Upon first watching this, I thought I had identified two inconsistencies/falsehoods: 1. You stated the ban would last for 90 days, but later said it would be for 120 days. 2. You said that no Americans had ever been killed by foreign nationals from any of the countries on the list, which is contradicted by the attack at Ohio State University by a Somali refugee. However, I rewatched the relevant sections and realised that the 90 days was in reference to the ban on legal and illegal immigrants, whereas the 120 days applied specifically to the refugee ban. Regarding the second point, I then went over the information regarding the Ohio incident and found that no individuals had actually been killed. My take-away from this is that, if this is how easy it is to misinterpret information from the more reliable sources, it's no wonder information gets so distorted so much when people are relying on less-than credible sources. Thank you again for doing what you're doing.
As an Italian, as a European, it is disheartening to see the beacon of democracy spawn from migrants and refugees turn its back on the very principles that made it so. For all the eurocentrism and cultural difference, from the other side of the Atlantic, we took pride in being aligned with a country that professed, upheld and defended such ideals. After such betrayal, we fear we might be left alone in this fight. Please prove us wrong. Thanks for the video John!
Most Americans claim to be Christian, but I would like to contest that. I'm an atheist, I'm not here to challenge your faith, but I emplore all American Christians (and everybody else for that matter) to have a closer look at Leviticus. Specifically this passage: "When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt." (Leviticus 19:33-34) This ban is not only unconstitutional and inhumane, it is fundamentally unchristian. Don't make the mistake of blindly accepting the atrocious actions of your newly elected head of state.
Yeah most "christians" in the US pick and choose what they like and ignore the rest. Assuming they actually read the bible and don't just parrot what someone else says is in the bible.
As a European Christian, I can only concur. American evangelical Christianity does some really mindboggling doublethink on several topics of Jesus' teachings. OTOH, it's not as if that ban were an unanimous decision by all American Christians. Quite a lot of church leaders have criticised the ban.
As a European Protestant (Calvinist, to be precise), I've long since lost hope in the people who profess "Protestantism" in the States. I don't like to generalise, and I realise that I'll have to to say anything meaningful about this, but in general, they seem to have taken out every part of the Bible that talks about compassion, love, patience, moderation or wisdom, and instead left jus the bits starting with "thou shalt not"...
Ze Rubenator One thing you have to remember is that most of the news you hear about Christians here is going to be negative, since rarely do happy stories make the news. If you look for good Christians I'm sure you can find them. Also there are massive protests going on right now, I'm sure at least several of them are Christians not blindly accepting the order.
In times when everything is online in a minute everybody loves to talk about what's happening in the world but only a few take the time to explain what's going on. Thanks for making this video.
people of the geneva convention are permitted to let in a certain amount of refugees. We let them in 2011 from both syria and other countries people are fleeing. This isnt a ban per say because it has a time limit. LIke john said its a 120 day ban. Not a permanent ban
chris ingram no you stupid. Not every county has to follow the Geneva conventions, especially the most powerful. Also countries have their own laws and make their own decisions.
chris ingram no you stupid. Not every county has to follow the Geneva conventions. countries have their own laws and make their own decisions. Countries don't have through their borders open for anybody at all so they cannot accept any refugees and not against. Geneva conventions has no power or any country.
Since you mentioned listening to the refugees' stories, I thought I would recommend a book I've recently read. It's called 'Nujeen' and it tells the story of Nujeen Mustafa, a disabled kurdish girl from Syria who made the dangerous trip from Syria to Europe, in a Wheelchair! It's really an interesting book, and a heartwarming and inspiring story, and I encourage everyone to read it.
John. It makes me crazy when people cite that crap about how rare it is to be killed by terrorism. The actual number of people killed is not the biggest problem. It's the robbing of security to entire communities, the cost and despair and focus away from a happy American life caused by terrorism that is the problem. You don't need too many terrorists to accomplish that. Look up that style of argument up in your Logic 101 book. Which of your children will you put on the "potential line?" Which one is expendable?
This is also just the first step in a process our country should have had in place for a long time. It's not fair to judge step one. Step Ones are almost always difficult, awkward, even chaotic.
The "robbing" of your happy American life is your own undoing. I think you missed the point. Getting stuck by lightning happens, but its so rare that it is irrational to quake in your boots, or worse yet make stupid legislation banning people from being outside on a stormy day. Terrorism happens, but its also very rare, so to make stupid legislation banning people certain refugees is irrational.
>It's the robbing of security to entire communities, the cost and despair and focus away from a happy American life caused by terrorism that is the problem. If we're really all that concerned about how people feel about their safety then gun and car sales should be halted because they might kill someone.
@ hydra680 -- Yes. Being struck by lightening is rare, but in a storm you'd be wise to avoid open areas and tall objects, stay away from objects that may conduct electricity, etc. -- right? The 'rarity' of a potential danger doesn't ever mean not to take every precaution. I hope you are not a parent or responsible for any other people.
I seriously love it when you just break things down so people can understand them. This is my favorite thing you do on your channel. I've been so freaking confused. Thank you.
Thanks John green for giving the wonderfully unbiased and objective view with all the information, i guess we can count on people like you to keep facts from dying, keep it up
I teach at an English Language School that has mostly Middle Eastern students. Many of them are scared and confused right now. If they have questions, I'm going to send them to this video. Thanks, as always, John.
Thank you so much for making this, John. I have a hard time finding trustworthy sources of information and understanding. I genuinely appreciate the work you put into making this and helping educate us. [:
I've heard some suggest that it would be far more effective to help the refugees in their own countries, rather than bring them here. Should we, at least, not explore that as an option?
Far more effective, but potentially more deadly and requiring far more resources. Plus, if the latter half of the twentieth century is any indication, we're not particularly good at it.
Far more effective? We are accidentally bombing civilians in every country were dropping bombs in, not to mention accidental friendly fire incidents on allies i personally believe that people would be more inclined to move back to their homeland once the region itself stabilises.
MrRoboskippy if by effective you mean dangerous. let me ask you a question how would you react if some foreigners came to your country and aided terrorists to power and then bombed everything and everyone? and then they banned you from entering there country safely while exploiting yours for wealth. also it would make more sense to relocate refugees outside a war torn country and eliminate terrorists then relocate them back.
MrRoboskippy That's what I think is a good idea, but I know that its not really going to get explored anytime soon, atleast not by the government or major organisations. Rich people are tight with money nowadays and if it involved people's taxmoney then people would throw a fit.
like Saudi Arabia, which has a tent city with ac and everything that could house 3 million people comfortably. I'm not saying it's a panacea, but it would help
Thank you for at least honestly trying to be unbiased in your factual reporting and acknowledging your bias when giving your opinion. I disagree with you, and support this ban, but it is important that people discuss this rationally and with accurate information.
Stephen Albright well thank you for being civil, but you're wrong. This ban is nothing but a mistake. It is only going to add fuel to the jihadist fire (I wouldn't be surprised if a 9/11 esque terror attack happens in the near future.) It's keeping not only the banned countries out but all refugees like the Burmese who desperately need to leave the country. It violates the Asylum laws both US and international. Look I understand being afraid of terrorism. For god sakes I was in Boston during the whole Boston marathon bombing. I was at school I had to call home get my bag searched. We walked in eggshells until the manhunt and I along with the rest of the greater Boston area was ordered to lockdown for hours. It was terrifying. . But this ban isn't the way to fix the problem.
I respect your willingness to listen to others (it's a trait I don't often see in these days). I would like to know though: do you support the order itself (in it's totality and lack thereof), or do you support what it is trying to do? I critique the first because it was rushed and seems to be borderline illegal. I don't agree with the second... but I understand it.
L. T C. But it is not a ban. It's a suspension on immigration on those seven countries that Obama drafted during his administration that has ties tp terrorism. Immigrants are allowed to immigrate over except the seven cpuntries for 120 days.
Blood5kull, that is simply not true. The countries banned are those we have poor diplomatic relations with, which are _not_ the same as the countries from which terrorists have arrived. Also, see HawlyAly's comment above about how "120 days" actually means "a few more years" for people who have _already_ passed rigorous screening. I don't know how anyone can justify that as a legitimate security process. And that's not just me being a whiny liberal, more than a few lawyers and right-wing security types have said the same thing. For example: lawfareblog.com/malevolence-tempered-incompetence-trumps-horrifying-executive-order-refugees-and-visas
Blood5kull It's a ban by any other name. If it look like ban acts like a ban, what else are we going to call it? And besides it may be temporary now but there's really nothing stopping it from being extended when the deadline is reached he could just sign another order and drag it out again and again until it's basically permanent.
Correction: It's more like not letting random people into your house despite the fact you have known them for months because they might be a murderer. (Side note: In the analogy, only one person got to know them so If your spouse is untrustworthy then you can worry)
I really like how you include some counter arguments in your video, as it really adds to the discussion and brings the conversation to a more intellectual level. It is very comforting to see that there are some people who will still listen and consider different arguments and respond to them civilly rather than just shutting out all opposing voices.
I'm no expert on American government & politics, but shouldn't POTUS be putting forward legislation to Congress instead of taking executive action after executive action?
The President has broad powers when it comes to immigration, but part of the problem with this EO is that it is so poorly written and confusing. That could've been addressed by having more Congressional representatives (or even government departments) vetting it. -John
I think EOs should have greater limitations. I get that the POTUS needs to be able to act quickly in emergencies and time sensitive situations, but if the POTUS has time to consult congress and have things be voted on, then using EOs just to push stuff though without anyone else's approval, seems a little out of place in a democracy.
Just trying to be informative here, every president drops hundreds of Executive orders. It's not just a "I don't want to deal with congress". There are guidelines or limits. You can do a google search on it if you are interested. Presidents sign usually around 200-300 (roughly) executive orders during their term.
I feel bad that this is an informative video about a serious topic but I'm just sitting here wondering what could be the answer to this week's password riddle
Would someone mind explaining that to me? I have been a part of the community for only a few months, and I there is very little info on the web about the hidden forum and the deal with the passwords.
Sure, I can! So, a few weeks ago boxes started appearing in the background of John's videos. Someone asked about it in a comment but he just pinned it and didn't answer the question of what was in them. Last week someone asked again and he said that it was no longer the main concern. After that, someone pointed out a small picture that was on the wall and with a few guesses we discovered it was a tuatara. With the help of John we found a forum that needed a password to access it. John had left a clue and through research and the help of other Nerdfighters in the comments we were able to access the forum. Now it seems like we have a new riddle every week to access something new in the forum. It's quite fun to figure it out even if it is a bit hard. Other Nerdfighers help a lot. If you want to join you should check last week and this week's pinned comments. Hope that helped! :-)
Thank you, John. I work with an immigrant population who are majority asylum-seekers. My colleagues and I sincerely hope DJT doesn't know the difference between refugee status and asylum, and won't find out for a while. That's the bare minimum of our hopes btw.
ramzi45: It's a beautiful thing. Our country is finally engaged in passionate debates that cannot be avoided. In my opinion, parking yet another career politician in the Oval Office wouldn't have brought so many to the table.
I honestly do not know how to feel anymore. I try to understand how people of different views can come to different positions from me. While the threat of extremist Islamic terrorism is real, it is not the most significant issue in the grand scheme of things for the reasons that you stated. However, I try to understand how the way we poorly prioritize threats and the constant exposure to these incidents on the news could lead people to think it was a much bigger issue than it really. But the fact that a law has just been implemented where a child has to be detained based solely on the place he was born and there are seriously people out there who see this and think that it is a job well done, my sympathy starts to fade. Again, not all people who were in favor of this ban I think are truly aware of its effects, but to those who are... again, I just don't know how to feel. My only hope is that we can get past this dark time in human history. My heart goes out to all those affected by this. :'(
Thank you for this wonderful video. I'm off to watch refugee stories. I work with refugees at a small non-profit. I already know many of refugees as actual people -- men and women and children who in other circumstances would have been glad to live in peace in their home countries but are now fleeing terrorism, or government soldiers burning their villages, or similar terrible situations. Now they live in the US, learning the language, working at pretty unpleasant jobs, going to school, trying to make a new start. We're lucky to have them. I'm pretty sure America is worse again for this new policy.
Thank you for this, i always feel I can look to you and listen. Being that I feel that you hear and are changed by the people you listen to. I look to you and your brother as voices of reason in these, dark, confused, quiet times. Not quiet from a lack of rhetoric but quiet from reason, from thinking people who aren't struck dumb by the fear and antagonism we face. So many reasonable people have stopped talking, have stopped listening because we are frustrated by the lack of understanding, by the lack of well, people who might listen and have something to say that isn't coming from a place of hatred and fear.
I really don't understand US politics - how can Trump have signed an Executive Order if there are large groups of people within his own government that don't think it's legal? Surely the first thing you look at when you want to sign something is "is it legal"?
Executive orders work a little differently than legitimate laws, but even for an executive order (an order, signed by the president, that generally lasts for the duration of their term) this one is exceptionally awful.
For this to happen without legal vetting is extremely abnormal and a big warning flag for danger. The executive branch of government (which includes the police, the military, the Customs and Border Patrol and various regulatory bodies as well as the President) are supposed to abide by and enforce the existing laws and may create directives about how they go about it. They are supposed to be limited by the Legislative branch (Congress) who can define what they can and can't do and the Judiciary branch (who can make rulings on the legality of the actions of the other two). However, federal courts in several states have now issued orders to suspend enforcement of the order and in a few places the CBP agents are refusing to acknowledge the court order or even let people who have been detained speak to a lawyer which is their legal right. That is why some people are calling this a constitutional crisis.
2:00 Everyone needs to know this. Whether you're a liberal or conservative, this is an extremely important, unbiased fact that should not be overlooked. Please, if anything, watch at least these few seconds of the video.
okay so is anyone one else searching? so far ive found an old video in which John talks about ping pong with the head, but no dice on a password. am i spinning in circles?
on the last video in the comments there was a riddle, i assume the ping pong paddle is part of part two. do you understand the poem? because yes, i was talking about that
Didn't a lot of the defenders argue that this was never intended to target Muslims specifically? Then why is it, suddenly? ;) Second, this won't stop Muslims blowing you up. It will however help those who want to. And third, "fascism" is something entirely different.
the Decoy and this is only after a week. I guess we're trying to outdo Brexit. Millions of Americans are outraged and terrified right now. We don't know what these next 4 years will mean, but we are going to fight as hard as we can
John Faria I think it's a sign of privilege and security to be optimistic about it. It's possible it's all a business tactic, but the people he puts in charge, like Bannon for the NSC, have very real radical and dangerous stances. It threatens groups who were already vulnerable in this country. He's threatened my reproductive rights as a woman and threatened to put Muslims on a registry and he's not listening to the people when millions of them say "no, this is not what we want." That to me is reason enough to be wary. I think it's great that you're not scared but I think you have to realize that not all of us are in a place and situation where we can look at it that way.
Anthony Harvey can't see your full reply for some reason, but I'll save us both some time and quote your idol without giving any logical rebuttal or evidence, since you seem to think that's good enough to support: "wrong."
"The United States cannot, and should not, admit those you don't do not support the Constitution..." But, like one of the first things Americans did to the Constitution was reject it. There's a reason amendments exist. And the Constitution only exists because the first one (The Articles of Confederation) failed. And even that one only exists because America rejected British rule. The Constitution literally embodies a history of rejection. This country was literally founded on the belief that the people have the right to reject a government that doesn't serve them. This one line is just a pile of horse shit.
Michael Wang How about more specifically the United States should not admit those who reject the Bill of Rights and or put their religious law i.e. Sharia Law above it. Would that not be a fair statement?
In my opinion America's image around the world has never been worse than it is now. I may get a lot of hate from Trump supporters for saying this but since I'm a great believer in being allowed to express your own opinion I'm going to do it anyway. I used to think that America was great. Ideas like the 'American Dream' seemed like things that weren't entirely correct, but definitely not untrue. My image of America with its gun laws and educational system and so on was not perfect. But it was good. I thought it was better than just a decent country. I even considered maybe moving there myself someday, just because I thought that the country had so many positive aspects many of which, may I say, still exist today. However, my mind simply cannot comprehend how the majority of Americans could vote for someone like Trump. I'm not saying that what Trump says and believes is "wrong". Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even and maybe especially if I do not agree with it. But changing a country based on such ideas is an entirely different matter. America has changed from a country I once really liked into a country I now fear. Not in a good way as in having respect for Americans because of their power though. I sadly have no respect left for the majority of Americans. I genuinely fear the country America's become. It has turned into a country that, if this continues on, I never want to set foot into again. I know that many people do not agree with Trump nor have voted for him, but he still became president and sadly the outcome is what matters. The consequences don't just affect Americans. They affect the whole world and we too have to deal with them. Every country no matter if developed or undeveloped, we're all affected in some way or the other. I have not yet met a single person where I live who says that this effect is a positive one though. America has destroyed it's good image, in my opinion forever. Many people myself included fear what this once beautiful country has become and want absolutely nothing to do with it. Maybe someday when everyone is working to bring nations closer together and trying make the world a better place America will stand alone. In my opinion the future of the rest of the world looks quite gray because of Trump. But America's future looks more than gray. In my eyes it's pitch black. Just something to keep in mind.
the Colossal Titan we aren't a true democracy we are a republic( In our pledge of allegiance), also, to elect a representative based purely on popular vote is a surefire way to elect the next Hitler( google Herd Mentality ). An Electoral College allows an even distribution to allow for a more balanced election. Otherwise California, Illinois, Texas, and New York would be the only people deciding who the next president would be. I didn't vote for either of the candidates. But Trump won fair and square and not by a tiny margin either. I'm just saying he won because people want to be told things are getting better. They don't actually want things to be better
One correction: Trump's executive order does not change the law in the slightest. The president does not have the authority to change the law. What it does is order immigration officers to take certain actions. The law remains the law.
my understanding is that executive orders are INTENDED to be used in an emergency. The problem is that last 8 years, the only way Obama could get anything done was by using the executive order. By my observation, anything and everything he was supposed to do as president, congress tried to stop him from doing regardless of whether or not it was his job and conservatives accused him of abusing it and threatened to take him to court. They can't have their cake and eat it too, IMO the past 8 years and the next 4 to 8 years are gonna consist politically of rich elites with government connections and conservative politicians throwing a temper tantrum because they can't overcharge people for healthcare and a black guy wanted to make the world a better place. And thats all anything opposing Obama publically has ever been presented to me as; a temper tantrum.
AnimeShinigami13 executive orders have perfectly legitimate usage involving the various agencies in the executive branch, and most presidents since the 1800s made a fair number - FDR the most, in association with his New Deal
While I like this channel and think this video was generally well put together there were a few pieces of misinformation in it. While i think its safe to say this EO was poorly written and rolled out, I do think the Trump admin. was on the right path. Firstly, you say that people, such as professors, actors, activists, doctors and other high level personnel (with visas) from these countries won't be allowed into the country. That is false, there is a clause in the EO that states the Secretaries of State and Homeland security can waive the EO for individuals on a case-by-case basis. Secondly, you state that no foreign national from any of these countries has ever killed anyone in the US. Again, that is blatantly false. Either you didn't do your homework or you read that ridiculously manipulated photo of stats that Kim Kardashian posted on twitter and took it as factual. With a simple google search you can find the names of 20 individuals that moved from those countries to the US, that the US Dept. of Homeland Security stopped from plotting terror attacks on US soil. Additionally, I'll extend an olive branch and say that Tashfeen Malik, the female San Bernardino shooter, was born in Pakistan, moved to Saudi Arabia (where she was coerced to wage jihad) and thusly moved to the US. Both of those countries should without a doubt be added to the list.
Agree. Economic interests got in the way of taking the ban as far as it should have been taken, as well as the fact it was poorly written. Europe is the benchmark for how horrific things can go absorbing so many economic migrants (as most are migrants, not refugees).
Jack Inglis I see where you are coming from in terms of the EO being waived for individuals. We don't know how long that would take, but I think it's safe to say entry into the US for those "special" individuals would be quite a slow process with this clumsy admin. Additionally, I think everyone acknowledges that this EO is going to inconvenience way more people than potential terrorists it will stop. However, I would gladly take the option of having a few thousand pissed of migrants on our hand than another Ohio State attack or San Bernardino incident. Also, in regards to banning US citizens....no. No US citizens will be affected by this. This includes duel-citizenship holders from those countries. Furthermore, green card holders that were unfortunate enough to be overseas in those 7 countries while the EO was implemented will fall under the category of "case-by-case" admittance into the US upon their return. Lastly, while yes, you technically are correct on the matter of "no American has been killed by anyone from the banned countries" I would like to point you to the recent Ohio State attack where several people were injured by a Somali national who was inspired by ISIL. Also, if you wouldn't mind citing that 1 in 3.6 billion statistic, I'd appreciate that! Ultimately, this EO was just straight trash and needed more careful attention by the Trump Admin. I think at the end of the day, however, Trump is trying his hardest to not turn us into the the raging culture clash that is Europe.
Jack Inglis Okay, so I read the CATO study and while I kind of believe there may have been some bias by the author to make the problem seem as small as possible I think the overall study was credible and true. With that being said, I think most people don't have a problem with the individual refugees themselves. I know I acknowledge that they are in a terrible place right now, smack dab in the middle of a war zone that is. It's even worse when you find out that most victims of fundamentalist Islamic terror are muslims themselves - not Americans. What I'm trying to get at is it's not the Syrian refugees I'm worried about, it's the radicalized/fundamentalist ISIL combatants hiding amongst the refugees acting as wolves in sheep's clothing that I'm concerned about. I realize that 99% of Syrian refugees are good intentioned people that want to better their lives and their children's lives, but at the moment the Syrian refugees are our modern day Trojan Horse. If we let a thousand refugees in and one of them is in fact an ISIL soldier who commits an act of terror on US soil that claims American lives we must ask ourselves, "was it worth it?". Is it worth risking our own safety for these refugees. This is America, I know we like to pretend to be the world's parent and make everything better and put our nose into everything but we also need to put ourselves first. One of the reasons why Woodrow Wilson isn't regarded as a total flop of a president is because his stance on isolationism was so favorable. He believed in letting the world's nations settle their own arguments and to not get involved unless the US be directly provoked. Is this a time when we should let countries surrounding Syria (*cough* *cough* Saudi Arabia) take in the refugees? Personally I can't decide what's worse, turning them away altogether, or admitting them all willy nilly. At the end of the day, they aren't US citizens, they don't have a right to live on US soil but they should be treated with dignity and respect
I've been using this quote for some time now, but it sums my feelings well: Born into a world of strife, Against the odds, we choose to fight! I highly disagree with the Trump Adminstration's position on the EPA, the Muslim Ban, and his picks for his cabinet. I didn't agree with everything Obama did either, but from my perspective (and I have been attempting to make informed, logical conclusions), the Trump decisions make little sense.
Thanks, man! To get to both of your points: 1. I'm only up to Sartorl Marsh right now, and I'm really enjoying it. I got the Wii U Virtual Console download after watching Chuggaaconroy. Have you played Xenoblade Chronicles X? 2. I appreciate your kind words. I'm also aware that I might have gaps in my knowledge, and I'm perfectly willing to have a reasonable, intelligent discussion to get more informed. You know the kind, a discussion where people have a calm discussion where, despite the fact that they may disagree, they try to understand each other and try to back up their opinions with evidence and facts.
In my mind, they don't make sense. Why put a gag order on the EPA, when they're an organization that helps promote the environment and environmental regulations to help keep the country clean? Why sign a ban involving countries that have had no one attack the US (and why ban anyone at all in the first place, aside from people who are known criminals)? Why make a cabinet pick for education for someone with no real experience in the educational field, aside from the fact that she contributed to his campaign (to use one example)? In all honesty, if there is an honest answer to be had, I'm willing to hear and consider it.
It makes perfect sense. Trump promised wacky stuff if he becomes president and wacky stuff we are having. But let's elaborate: 1) Suppress the EPA so they don't get up all in the people's faces with regulations. This attracts companies and corporations and may lower prices for goods and possibly employment. At the cost of our environment of course but hey, I heard there's a good deal for air conditioners at Walmart. 2) Ban all Muslims. This was a campaign promise. People voted for him because of this and Trump is fulfilling his end of the bargain. Sure this is all sorts of wrong but hey, #FeelsGoodMan. Besides, not all Muslims are banned. Those people from shady Saudi Arabia are allowed to enter the US. 3) Really weird cabinet picks. Well if I become president with the help of others, I'd help them back. Sure it may hurt our national education but education's overrated. We have the Internet after all! Any more questions you need answered regarding Mr. T's behavior? P.S. I have heard of this Xenoblade Chronicles. Is it good?
I think it is important to point out that although the executive order bans more people than just muslims, stopping muslim people was clearly Trump's goal, seeing as he advocated for a temporary ban on Muslim immigrants before becoming president.
Dude, there has got to be that guy who finally, after 2 years, got their VISA to get into the US and was about to take a flight when this Exe. Order was released.
PSA for those who want to help but don't know how. Canada has a private sponsorship program which allows a group of Canadians to raise $25,000 to sponsor a Syrian family, which allows them to move to Canada (source: www.cic.gc.ca/englisH/refugees/sponsor/index.asp) so that's a way to help if you're Canadian. But if you're not there are a bunch of smaller charities run by individual groups raising money to sponsor a family that you can donate money to. For example here's a go fund me by a class of my former teacher: www.gofundme.com/SyrianFamilyMEI So if there aren't any where to volunteer near you, this is a way to directly help get a family in need out of Syria. Dear John (no, I'm not breaking up with you...but, I'm not...yeah, never mind), you should know how appreciative I am of your voice in American culture. You are one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) vloggers. As someone who has been unsure what to think, your voice rings out clearly. It sticks the points and facts with passion and eloquence, yet still able to lean into the heartbreak currently being faced around the world, all while refusing to name call and return to 7th grade vocabulary. This particular piece on the immigration ban should be seen everywhere. I am heartbroken by the meanness and general idiocy propagated by "news journalists," just because they can. It reminds me of dogs marking their territory. You have taken the road less traveled, and for that I'm grateful.
This total lack of empathy, rational thought, and understanding will tarnish America's reputation at the least and cause us tangible complex problems that will only make things worse. All of this showmanship is reminiscent of another era, 1932. Maybe it's just time to leave.
*one somali attacked but did not kill anyone. my bad. *I think you mean Myanmar, not Burma. Otherwise, hear hear. this executive order is wholly damaging.
TheChiller007 In some sense... kinda. www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/worldviews/wp/2012/11/19/why-its-such-a-big-deal-that-obama-said-myanmar-rather-than-burma/ This article explains it quite well, but it comes down to an issue of many not wanting to lend legitimacy to a government of oppression.
I get your analogy but it would be better suit for the wall and not the ban. You lock your doors to make yourself feel safer, It doesn't really make you that much safer. If some one really wanted into your house a lock isn't doing much.
I honestly do not see how? The ban prevents ANYONE from those countries from entering the US, witch includes the following, Whites, blacks, asians, mexicans, indians, japanese, chinese, siamese, look at these...... and of ANY religion, christian, muslim, buddist, athiest, catholic, jewish, shit even scientologist....EVERYONE! All in an effort to keep us... and I mean ALL of us here in the US just a little bit safer, Me you OUR families. does that help?
You're comparing a trivial act that causes no harm to innocents, but directly impedes those with ill intent, to an action that actively harms innocents based on the minuscule, unfounded assumption that someone, somewhere might do something, maybe. Your analogy is the same rationalization the US used to justify the Japanese internment of the 1940's and the return of Jewish refugees to Europe in the 1930's. Two of the most embarrassing moments in American history. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
Yes the return of the Jewish people during the 30's was a bad thing....do you know why? And the next time you get a minute, Google December 7th 1941, to understand the reason for the Japanese internment....Who learned what lesson?
i feel like the ban on the refugees are because alot of European countries who opened there boarders to help have gone threw eco decline based on the amount that entered. Greece is an example for it.
Greece's economy is failing for far deeper reasons, refugees are just the icing on the cake that has been greek economic policy for the last 20 years, expecially afetr they lied about their economic status to have the 2004 olympics, then they lied for years about their economic status and how much their economy was failing. Refugees aren't really that expensive or anything, they are mostly a political problem, not an economical or social one
Greece does not have a declining economy because of refugees. Its economy has been struggling years before the refugee crisis. Contrary to Trump claims, crime rates in central europe are actually on an all-time low and economy is doing fine. Yes, there are some humanitarian issues because there is too little housing to shelter all the refugees, but most of them prefer living in close quarters in europe over dying in syria.
Greece had economic problems way before the current refugee crisis (there's another video by John Green on that from a few years ago). In Europe we've seen a lot of political and public outcry over refugees, but fairly limited economic effects.
There is no correlation between taking in refugees and sovereign debt. For example the Greek recession was caused by a number of factors (just to name a few): corruption, clientelism, tax evasion and also in order to rush into the European Monetary Union they had to develop their financial market -> people were encouraged even to take out loans to buy stocks but the stock bubble bursted...
So the Obama administration said that people from those 7 countries needed visas to come to America. This is probably a stupid question, but what's the difference between a visa and just a passport, isn't a passport a type of travel visa?
Mary Bach also, if I might add that to obtain a visa you have to go through at least a basic background check and, as is the case of most African and western Asian countries, a person must register biometric data and pass a health exam before a visa is issued.
Watching this from 2021. Trump really just didn’t give a damn about having good foreign relations from the start. Feels like he just wanted to blow up everything just to see what would happen
I noticed this in the bottom of the description:

Yeah this policy is an example of extremely outdated thinking.

On one hand, that seems a bit late, on the other hand, better late than never.
Still, the sheer scale of _wtf are these people doing_ baffles me :s
Well, from what I understood, most of his supporters were "taking him seriously, but not literally". Every Trump supporter I talked to during the election told me I was crazy, I was taking him too literally, and he wouldn't be able to accomplish most of the items on his platform. Basically, they all thought he was just saying that stuff to get elected, and so did many people who opposed him. But now, slowly, everyone (including those who voted for him) is realizing that we should have been taking him very literally after all, because he did indeed mean what he was saying.
+Cycling in Edmonton from the Eyes of a Teen So you mean about 80% voted for hillary? Really?
Why? because most of the voting public voted against him and lets not forget many representatives of him and the GOP came out and said things like the wall were hyperbole.
:)
_You never forget to be awesome, John._

Upon first watching this, I thought I had identified two inconsistencies/falsehoods:
I think on the second one he said that it included foreign ambassadors, who had never killed an American citizen.

We've actually done this several times in the past, see Irish immigration in 19th century and german/japanese in the 20th. We'll get better.

Most Americans claim to be Christian, but I would like to contest that. I'm an atheist, I'm not here to challenge your faith, but I emplore all American Christians (and everybody else for that matter) to have a closer look at Leviticus. Specifically this passage:
"When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The
foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love
them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt." (Leviticus 19:33-34)
This ban is not only unconstitutional and inhumane, it is fundamentally unchristian.
Quite a lot of church leaders have criticised the ban.
varana312 Including my denomination, Church of the Brethren. But we're tiny. :)

Well spoken John. I'm, as always, proud to be a part of this community
Also isn't a ban on refugees against the Geneva Convention?
Yes. Yes it is.
people of the geneva convention are permitted to let in a certain amount of refugees.
Dank Abraham Lincoln stupid for asking a question?
chris ingram no you stupid.

If we're really all that concerned about how people feel about their safety then gun and car sales should be halted because they might kill someone.
you're full of shit
@ hydra680 -- Yes. Being struck by lightening is rare, but in a storm you'd be wise to avoid open areas and tall objects, stay away from objects that may conduct electricity, etc. -- right? The 'rarity' of a potential danger doesn't ever mean not to take every precaution. I hope you are not a parent or responsible for any other people.
I seriously love it when you just break things down so people can understand them. This is my favorite thing you do on your channel. I've been so freaking confused. Thank you.

Here I am, wishing I could leave a hundred likes on this, because this needs to be seen by people who could actually change things.

I really really appreciate the way you explain things. This is so sad, and short sighted. Thank you for your videos.
It is only going to add fuel to the jihadist fire (I wouldn't be surprised if a 9/11 esque terror attack happens in the near future.)
It's keeping not only the banned countries out but all refugees like the Burmese who desperately need to leave the country.
For example:
lawfareblog.com/malevolence-tempered-incompetence-trumps-horrifying-executive-order-refugees-and-visas
Blood5kull It's a ban by any other name. If it look like ban acts like a ban, what else are we going to call it? And besides it may be temporary now but there's really nothing stopping it from being extended when the deadline is reached he could just sign another order and drag it out again and again until it's basically permanent.
That means a lot. Thank you John.
A refugee ban is like a grown person not talking to any strangers because one might be a murderer.
Sanguinius You'd be right if the US didn't have a year long (or more) vetting process
Christian Graulau It's more like not letting random strangers into your house because one of them might be a murderer.
Mr Jalapeno Why is this so hard?
actually it's even weirder
because everyone knows that he's doing that with the wrong kind of strangers while doing business with the backstabbers
Thanks John this vid is the least fake of all the news!

Love these informational videos!
-John
Do EO's commonly get vetting from congress and other parts of the government?
Generally more people are involved, yes.
THANK YOU. John, keep on flooding TH-cam with your very thoughtful, educational videos. Youre making a difference.

even if you feel the ban makes you safer.... you have to admit at least one thing: IT WAS EXECUTED VERY POORLY!
Ariane Martins that is why it is important to have a seasoned politician run the country
Agree. Not Hillary though.

It's a beautiful thing. Our country is finally engaged in passionate debates that cannot be avoided.
In my opinion, parking yet another career politician in the Oval Office wouldn't have brought so many to the table.
Trump is just the ultimate troll. I bet he gets a chuckle from watching the media and government officials trying to figure this shit out.

Thank you for this we'll put together video, John. I appreciate these kinds of thoughtful videos and the time and effort you put into making them.
I'm pretty sure America is worse again for this new policy.
omg couldn't click fast enough. thank you john
Thank you for calling it "immigration" and not "Muslim"

John, we need people like you in politics. What a brilliant and thoughtful summary.
yep, damage pretty much done. What happened you USA? You used to be so cool.
Didn't a lot of the defenders argue that this was never intended to target Muslims specifically? Then why is it, suddenly? ;)
Second, this won't stop Muslims blowing you up.
John Faria glad to hear it. Optimism is great but hard when livelihood, citizenship and rights are being threatened, unfortunately
"The United States cannot, and should not, admit those you don't do not support the Constitution..."
But, like one of the first things Americans did to the Constitution was reject it.
*👍
A majority of Americans did not vote for mr.Trump in 2016. Due to the electoral collage, he won on a minority vote.
Man, this made this entire messy situation a lot more clear to me. Thanks for being a great source of information, John Green.
To be safe , and to feel safe, are two very different things. Trump won on the idea that perception is reality. Not reality is reality.
No, he lost the popular vote. So he really just won on democracy failure.
the Colossal Titan we aren't a true democracy we are a republic( In our pledge of allegiance), also, to elect a representative based purely on popular vote is a surefire way to elect the next Hitler( google Herd Mentality ).
Right, this is an important correction, and explains why the "no benefits" clause is illegal. -John
Another corrections: American citizens have indeed been killed by terrorist organizations operating within these countries.
my understanding is that executive orders are INTENDED to be used in an emergency.

Ryan Desmond thats like saying Obama was on the right path with the ACA even though it was poorly written
Ryan Desmond Saudi Arabia will not be on the list cause the US owns them a lot of money.
I've been using this quote for some time now, but it sums my feelings well:
Born into a world of strife,
Against the odds, we choose to fight!
I highly disagree with the Trump Adminstration's position on the EPA, the Muslim Ban, and his picks for his cabinet. I didn't agree with everything Obama did either, but from my perspective (and I have been attempting to make informed, logical conclusions), the Trump decisions make little sense.
SkywalkerAni 1. Great quote, love Xenoblade
2. Very well worded
Thanks, man! To get to both of your points:
But let's elaborate:
1) Suppress the EPA so they don't get up all in the people's faces with regulations.
Is it good?
SkywalkerAni how is this a Muslim ban in any way?
I think it is important to point out that although the executive order bans more people than just muslims, stopping muslim people was clearly Trump's goal, seeing as he advocated for a temporary ban on Muslim immigrants before becoming president.

For example here's a go fund me by a class of my former teacher: www.gofundme.com/SyrianFamilyMEI

Maybe it's just time to leave.

do you lock your doors? when your home with your family? I do, not because I hate the world, because I love my family...
I get your analogy but it would be better suit for the wall and not the ban. You lock your doors to make yourself feel safer, It doesn't really make you that much safer. If some one really wanted into your house a lock isn't doing much.
Retaeiyu yes but I would fell very sorry for the person that wanted to test that lock
Greece's economy was horrible even before they entered europe let alone the refugee crisis
For example the Greek recession was caused by a number of factors (just to name a few): corruption, clientelism, tax evasion and also in order to rush into the European Monetary Union they had to develop their financial market -> people were encouraged even to take out loans to buy stocks but the stock bubble bursted...
john green you said everything!!!! thank youuuu
So the Obama administration said that people from those 7 countries needed visas to come to America. This is probably a stupid question, but what's the difference between a visa and just a passport, isn't a passport a type of travel visa?
A passport is not a visa. A passport is issued by the country where you are a citizen. A visa is issued by the country you want to visit.
steveh46 thank you. That makes sense, I was explaining this video to my mom and we were both confused about what needing a visa meant!
Mary Bach also, if I might add that to obtain a visa you have to go through at least a basic background check and, as is the case of most African and western Asian countries, a person must register biometric data and pass a health exam before a visa is issued.
I wouldn't call the Cato Institute "incredibly conservative" ...it's pretty nonpartisan
Watching this from 2021. Trump really just didn’t give a damn about having good foreign relations from the start. Feels like he just wanted to blow up everything just to see what would happen
