Egypt....Explained!

  • **EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS ARE EXEMPT FROM TIME LIMITS :-p**
    The situation in Egypt is extremely complicated and changing constantly. The arguments between the military and the Muslim Brotherhood go back over half a century and they are much more complicated than the press tends to give them credit for.
    I just wanted to share a tiny bit of context to help the world understand the different stakeholders, what they want, why they're angry, and why the first democratically elected leader of Egypt lasted so little time.
    Thank you very much to Mohktar Awad for spending so much time on the phone with me yesterday setting me straight!

      from a global economic perspective its kinda improving, from a citizen's perspective its actually worse in many ways. +TheSparda81 The ISIS flag is borrowed from the original Islamic flag carried by the 1st Muslims. ISIS hides behind the Islamic flag in order to give itself legitimacy. Pretty much like how the state of Israel hides behind the Jewish identity (see star of David on their flag) when in reality the state was not ever built upon the Judaism.

      @GamingIsTheBest 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +TheSparda81 ISIS became a thing one year after this video. So no, that can't be what the person holding the flag was supporting. That flag pre-dates ISIS by over a thousand of years, so it has been used for various causes. In this case, I imagine it is about justice.

    As a fellow nerd, and someone who lived in Cairo from 2009-2013 (PRIME REVOLUTION TIME!) I want to thank you for this, belated as the thanks may be. When people would hear I had been living in Egypt, the invariable reaction was usually a wide-eyed, holy moley reaction, followed soon after by an "Oh crap, I don't really know what was going on over there I hope she doesn't ask me what I think of it..." I was able to direct them to this video, and the next time I saw them they seemed so much more relaxed and knowledgeable. That's down to you and the simple, straight-forward breakdown you've provided. Of course, it's all extremely complex, but I'd rather people heard this and had the Cole's Notes version rather than that deer-in-the-headlights look!

      There actually quite a few countries where the military is at least partially independent from the actual government. Sometimes this can be positive and means they can avoid being influenced if someone a bit sinister and non sensible takes power* but it mostly means they can pretty much replace any government they don't like by using force. This is part of the reason why there were so many military dictatorships in Latin America in the 20th century. The other part was the USA interfering.
      *An example of this is how the Turkish military see themselves as a bulwark against religious extremism in government. However being secular doesn't mean they are good guys. Just ask the the Kurds.

    • @CzechAvailabilitie
      @CzechAvailabilitie 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stability has it's perks they put it ahead of democracy and human rights. They don't really care if the person in charge is an authoritarian as long he isn't incompetent and the country is stable. Egypt went through decades of stable dictatorship without the military caring.

    • @Cageph
      @Cageph 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Thats considering the military actually gives free-elections which has never happened in history and in egyption history the military is one that had ruled egypt for the last 60 years or so it is unlikely egypt will become a democracy after such a coup.

    Dear Hank, I love you but you're not "America". You are "The United States of America". "America" is a word that refers to a different geographic region (aka continent) and not a country.
    I say this coming from Argentina, which also belongs to America. As much as I enjoy many things of the US culture, I completely disagree on others and therefore I find it very frustrating when someone refers to the US as "America", a country that doesnt necesarily represent all the other countries in America.
    Side note: not really talking about the gentilic, which would bring us to a hole different discussion.

      @lynsyebrown905 10 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Wikipedia is actually an EXCELLENT source for purposes like this. He wasn't writing a book, nor was he publishing in an academic setting. Wikipedia is peer-reviewed and updated faster than any on-paper publication every could be. When something incorrect is published on paper, it's permanent. When something incorrect is published on Wikipedia, it gets fixed. Ergo, I hope that using Wikipedia IS the norm for Hank's videos.

    • @nicholasmitchell2960
      @nicholasmitchell2960 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you find something to be inaccurate in the video, then by all means correct it, citing your "reliable sources" of course. Simply complaining that he uses sources from Wikipedia, and claiming that this means they aren't reliable, and furthermore implying that because of this the information is both untrue and misleading is silly and useless. Oh and you just used "I believe" in your argument against using Wikipedia, which is a pretty big red flag that you have no evidence whatsoever to stand on.

      Jeff Trechter Whoa dude chill. I love this guys work including Sci-Show, and am not dissing him in anyway. Furthermore I agree with Lynsye that yes Wikipedia has come a long way, but I am a man that has a hard time believing a lot of things on the internet. If a Wikipedia topic uses a citation then I'm going to check it out, and when I write Research papers I cite Wikipedia's source not Wikipedia. But when you research a topic like politics and political news (Such is this video) then citations become misconstrued. The bottom line is that anyone can say anything about everything as long as it sounds like it makes sense. for example: I could edit the Wiki page about the moon Titan, and say it doesn't have an atmosphere and cite NASA.com....except that it dose and NASA.com doesn't exist.(it's NASA.gov) So me PERSONALLY, i dislike Wiki and just stay away from it.

    Love you vlogbrothers! You guys are both hilarious and informative. I was in Egypt for 10 months serving with the MFO on the medical side of things, and worked extensively with the Egyptian military because the Sinai has always been a mess, and pretty much everything that you guys say was spot on. The real estate thing is hilarious because the Egyptian military actually will place guys outside of their investments, which in turn always do the best business (in my experience, it was large resorts) while other, name you valiant attempts, at real estate are left absolutely abandoned. Huge, extensive projects and massive partially finished developments are everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. This fuels a large population of homeless in Egypt, which accounts for much of the undocumented frustration, due to the lack of food, water, but not shelter. They are like gypsies, but with a ton of street smarts. Add that into the revolutionary mix. Also, food is a problem in Egypt. On the service it looks fine, but with 85+ million people living within 10 miles of the Nile, which is also the major source of water and irrigation, is, instead, trampled with people who are desperately trying to find a job. It is true that food is cheap there, but everyone knows that it will eventually be gone. Another large issue was waste removal. This actually goes for most of the Middle East, save Israel, but there are PILES of trash everywhere. The people there hate trash, and the military, who owns the rights to put it somewhere, won't. They want more money, which is one reason why the US gives as much as they do. The only city in Egypt where there isn't many visible piles of trash is Sharm el Shiek, which, coincidentally is where a lot of rich and influential people live, and happens to be miles away from Cairo, where most of the problems are. Like you said, revolutions are slow and this is only the beginning, and like the French Revolution, it is just a matter of time until Robespierre shows up. "You must realize," an Egyptian shop keeper told me when talking about Morsi, "this is really is not his fault. There is an (roughly translated: avalanche) of problems that we have. They are generations deep. They existed for my father and his father. The first guy is always doomed. We are just trying to make it day by day. God (Allah) has us in mind and protects us."

    Morsi was a genius. He was so smart, and he really wanted good for Egypt, but that was the problem. Egypt didn't need someone who just wanted good for it, it needed someone who knows how to lead. That was a thing you needed to make 4 different major factions and many other minor ones follow you, in order to do good to this country.
    Other than that, you did great analysing this. I am actually surprised you got that very fine view of the situation. Great job and bless you!

    From what I understood, after they forced Morsi out of his position, there was a large group of people (mainly MB) but it was by millions and they have been protesting for a month and a half, basically saying that what happened was undemocratic because they imprisoned the president for no actual crime, and they forced him before his time was over when they should've waited for his 4-year term to be over. So anyways, those people were protesting for over a month and a half until, but the army (1)

There was a story on Morning Edition on Friday the 15th of November, 2013 about the rules surrounding foreign food aid and how much of it our government is allowed to give in cash as opposed to actually sending food. The statement was made that there was plenty of food in the Philippines, what they need is money to buy it. Can you help me wrap around this?

  • @Base.
    @Base. 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mubarak never really had supporters in Egypt. The main, if not the only reason he stayed in power is because of American support. It was virtually impossible to get rid of him unless the US consented.
    As for the Muslim Brotherhood, it is a political party disguised as "Islamic" when in reality they're similar to any other political movement. Their wish is mainly one of power, little to do with religion even though the movement earlier on at birth started as a religious movement during Egypt's colonial days. Many Muslim nations look down upon the Muslim Brotherhood for vast serious reasons. However, their affiliation with terrorist organizations most likely is just a way to take away their legitimacy by Egyptian and US governments.

    thanks Hank for the video, but i wanted to note that you should really take a closer look at the part where you talk about the youth signing 22M declaration of insurgence "Tamarrod" because it turned out to be a part of the coup d'etat, and it was orchestrated by the Egyptian MIRA, the latter was also found later to dress some common soldiers and police servicemen as regular people and inserting them in the Anti-Morsi protests, so that they appear bigger (this is actually so easy to organized because them soldiers are mostly uneducated and unpaid). Also it would be great to note that the Military controlled the first "democratic" elections. there was no way that Ahmed Shafiq, the new face of Mubarak's regime, would make it that far, but MIRA wanted the situation to seem like a lot of people are starting to be Anti-revolution and pro-nationalism.

    clarifying a few points...
    abdennaser put the first military "president", naguib, on house arrest and took his place making himself the second military "president". might is right so why not throw all his opposition in prisons.
    i do like the emphasis on the fact that mursi "wins barely". also worth noting that mursi didn't really do much as a president because he was only a puppet for his people and a scarecrow used by the military and his party's new strategy went against islamic laws anyways. so after a fierce anti-muslim brotherhood pro-military campaign by all media the egyptians are knowingly or unknowingly back to square one. courtesy of the egyptian education supervised by the military.
